doors, 15 months after he was arrested. >> brian: a russian prosecutor says there is proof, proof that he collected secrets about the russian defense industry for the cia. >> ainsley: but the u.s. insists moscow is using the american journalist as a bargaining chip. >> lawrence: alex hogan joins us with more. hey, alex. >> hi, "wall street journal" reporter evan gershkovich back that court today with proceedings taking place behind closed doors, meaning there will be no media, family or friends present there for him. journalists were allowed in for several minutes when all of this started several hours ago. take a look. he was seen in that glass cage, once again, this time appearing with a shaved head. he is accused of espionage in this indictment claiming that he gathered secret information for the cia about a condition building tanks for russia's war in ukraine. washington and the "wall street journal" have repeatedly rejected the spy charges as baseless. now, gershkovich was detained in march of 2023, in the last 15 months moscow upheld and extended his detention, denying appeal. if convicted, he faces 20 years behind bars, which is statistically likely given that russian courts convict more than 99% of defendants. president biden says that washington is working around the clock pushing for his release, evan's mother spoke out on "fox & friends" calling for more to be done. >> president biden's promise to do whatever it takes to bring evan back, but there has been 250 days. and evan is not here. and the efforts to do whatever it takes hasn't story coming up later on this hour on "fox & friends" with one of evan's friends to talk about this difficult issue. >> brian: alex, do you know if he has any american presence there in the ambassador? anything from the embassy? anyone? >> so we do know, brian, that people were sent from the u.s., specifically in hopes of being able to be there in the courtroom today. unfortunately, that was not allowed. in a few minutes when journalists were allowed into the courtroom to take some of those photos, we did hear that there were several representatives that were allowed to be in there but only, again, for that very, very short amount of time. >> steve: al lengths, thank you very much. the extraordinary thing is well, russia said we caught him red-handed there has been no evidence presented in public, likely none behind closed doors. this is a completely doored door trial because ultimately, they want to convict him so he can be uused in as a prisoner in a prisoner swap. >> ainsley: exactly this is all putin's narrative want to control what happens in the courtroom as they usually do. family is not allowed in there. a nasty prison. only allowed out of his jail cell one hour per day. >> brian: do we grab a russian so we have someone to trade? we don't do that only one guy in germany eligible for a swap for the "wall street journal" for evan. i don't know what we do. the only thing they understand take two more americans over the last month. >> lawrence: perhaps a new administration there will be some movement. back here at home, big news overnight progressive supporters. watch this. >> tonight we turn a page and we say that we believe in inclusion of everybody. and every single representative has to understand the necessity for unity so that we can move forward as a nation. >> meanwhile bowman opting not to congratulate his opponent during his concession speech. >> super pac of dark money can spend $20 million to brainwash people into believing something that isn't true. but this will be a battle for or humanity and justice for the rest of our lives. >> bowman officially the first member of the squad to be ousted from congress in a primary battle, guys? >> steve: yeah, it was a fire alarm puller for the people on the progressive left because he was beaten by a moderate. thank you, brooke. >> lawrence: hopefully this was the lesson for the democratic party. if you take this position, you're going to lose by big margins. >> steve: anti-israeli position. >> ainsley: in new york. >> lawrence: largest population of jewish americans in the country. me and brian were talking off air, the fact that even that rally that he had wasn't even in his district. i mean, he was just trying to appear like he had this massive support and the voters rejected him rightfully. and he didn't even have the decency to call his opponent and to offer concession. >> ainsley: he has been very outspoken for his support for the palestinians, and he said israel has committed genocide. the american-israel public affairs committee didn't like that. they spent $14 million supporting the other guy, lattimer. the most expensive congressional primary in our country's history. >> brian: next is corey bush up by double digits. pro-defunding the police, anti-israeli. the people of her district in missouri, st. louis, ferguson area where she got chester. they weren't happy being hostage to the squad. maybe they have a feeling they can get out from underneath it. >> lawrence: the squad makes them -- is leading the agenda right now. and so the only way you get some type of movement if you get rid of them. >> steve: here's the thing about his district. it encompasses portions of the bronx and portions of west chester county. extraordinarily, as of 11:00 last night. he, in the bronx, bowman had about 85% of the vote. the loser had 85% of the vote in the bronx. but west chester, which is a larger area, lattimer had about 70%. that is what tipped it in his favor. >> ainsley: lost by double digits. >> brian: lattimer is supposed to win easily against a republican. trump's former campaign advisers look to rebrand president biden as capable. capable debater who will be ready for cnn's presidential debate. >> ainsley: trump's team pointing out that biden has been debating for 50 years. >> steve: is he masterful. lucas tomlinson has the latest from our nation's capital. >> lucas: that's right. just a week ago that he called president biden weak and incompetent. in philadelphia trump called biden the worst president in u.s. history. as you mentioned a different tone from senior campaign adviser jason miller who says, quote: we believe that many in the media are already prepared to give joe biden a participation trophy if i can simply stand upright for 90 minutes when really what this should be about thursday who has the future for the vision for america and defending their record. writing in the "new york times" hillary clinton who knows a thing or two about debating president trump. biden is starting the debate with a disadvantage because he is a sitting president. on the campaign trail trump able to fee off on witn witnesses ing order case gag order lifted by a judge. he will be going to virginia friday to debate in a state according to our own fox poll shows a dead heat right now. and of course a state that biden won by 10 points four years ago. guys? >> steve: lucas, thank you very much. this nbc report talking a little bit about how we thought because of things the former president had said, he would make the announcement at the rnc. have a big deal. but now, according to they had four sources, close to the campaign. trump could make the announcement today. he could make it tomorrow. a source says he is eager to fill the ticket before the debate. the debate is tomorrow. then again, donald trump likes to throw curve balls. it might be today or tomorrow. then again it might be next week or it could be after that. >> lawrence: ainsley, i have been telling people the former president is going to do whatever he wants to do. the campaign, ohio would say is more organized than ever, they have a plan. susie keeps a lid on things. >> brian: wild. >> lawrence: they run a tight ship. there is not all the super fans that were once on the campaign that are in the circle. he still is the man in the sense of they can strategize on something. but when he wants to push something out, that's going to happen, i don't think they anticipated that question from the press. who is the vp pick and the president saying i know who it is. i have already selected but only i know. >> ainsley: it was supposed to be. he said he knew. he was going to announce at the rnc. they are kind of walking that back now chris la is a vida the senior adviser on campaign he put that on social media it could be today if he announced it today or tomorrow he would throw biden off and maybe that's the curve ball. >> brian: i asked a senior adviser last night what's the latest? what do you think? what i think there is three finalists, j.d. vance, marco rubio and doug burgum. and he says. >> ainsley: and tim scott. >> brian: just when he goes yeah, until today. i go what do you mean? today, meaning yesterday, he brought up tim scott. he loves tim scott he just said how great a job he is doing for me. >> ainsley: who is he? >> brian: trump said in his meeting debate preps, all i can tell you is i just love tim cot it might not be right saying he made up his mind already. >> ainsley: okay. he also said in january he knew it who it was going to be. >> lawrence: we selected a candidate. the producers selected one for us. i went down to ohio to meet j.d. vance. >> ainsley: and his wife. >> lawrence: she has never done an interview before so that was interesting for us. >> lawrence: i got to know more than what the media is for j.d. vance. here is part one of the interview. >> how is it to be a senator. >> it's an incredible honor. >> how is it on the other side because you are a marine. >> there are lots of ways my service intersects. i care about national defense. i care about the troops have to fight. i care whether when we ask our kids go to war we ought to make sure it's for the right reasons and defensely think about those things a little differently as a u.s. marine. >> do a little bit rapid fire. tell me where j.d. vance stands on some of these issues? a j.d. vance economy would look like what? >> a lot more manufacturing jobs than we have right now. if you look, the economies that really, really thrive. they have a foundation of strong manufacturing. they are developing their own energy. >> lawrence: let's talk about education. >> school choice actually is necessary to give parents the ability to give their kids a good education. the difference between life outcome of a kid who goes to a decent school versus a kid who goes a terrible school is really, really incredible. a lot more self-reliance. >> lawrence: what would you do to solve the border crisis. >> you need congress to take congressional action so that biden or whoever else comes after trump can't come in and basically undo everything that he did that was smart on the border. that's really, really important. you got to be willing to deport people that come in illegally. got to be willing to construct that border wall. these policies matter. the most important thing, man, you can't have republicans terrified of being called bad names by the media. >> lawrence: you were critical of donald trump. past tweets. i don't think the country cares about that they care about the evolution in the sense of why? >> first of all, trump was just a very, very good president. i would say great president. when you look at something and say look, this guy was successful. he brought freedom. he brought a ton of pros parroted to our country. peace on the world stage, right? like you didn't have a new war popping up every year. i just think the results were so good. how could anybody look at and it say oh, yeah, i was critical of trump in 2016 but he proved me wrong. one, about the success of trump's presidency. i also think his presidency revealed at least to me how construct the media was. it taught me a very important lesson how the media lies. >> lawrence: i was watching cnn and one of kamala's former staffers say they fear you the most. why? >> one i actually know what i believe and i'm not afraid to say i was wrong or right about this issue. it's not talking points with me. politicians are really good at saying things very well but not saying anything at all. that's the kamala harris problem. go around in circles finally realize wait a second i listened to her for 10 minutes and she didn't say anything. i think sometimes. >> they can't all in with me. i grew up in a poor family and i was raised in a working class community. so i do think there is something about my biography that makes it a little harder for these guys to. >> i will take it. >> lawrence: i found him to be fascinating. the reason i brought up the mean tweets. i truly wanted to understand why did you pivot? what was it about the former president? and one you have the things later on in the interview he says all his family are democrats middle america and all of them voted for donald trump. he saw how they how they changed their mind and influenced by him. >> ainsley: wrote the book "hillbilly elegy" number one. and netflix came out with that movie. glen close starred in it and amy adams. it was such an excellent movie to know what he came from. >> lawrence: dirt poor. >> ainsley: dirt poor in the sticks. mother did drugs all the time. and then to graduate from, i think harvard law school is that right? steve yale. >> lawrence: where he met his wife. >> ainsley: and to back senator. >> steve: speaking of his wife. >> lawrence: had the opportunity to speak with her. never done the interview before this is iewsh shah vance. >> he dragged knew into the senate race and now he wants to be h vice president. are you ready for the scrutiny that that comes with potentially being the second lady of the united states? we found the first campaign he embarked on to be a a shock. so different than anything we had done before. it was an adventure. i guess the way i would put it is i'm not rearing to change anything about our lives right now. i believe in j.d. and i really love him. we will sort of see what happens with our life. we're open. >> lawrence: she is really sharp. just an excellent attorney. very sharp on time. just very -- runs the house as well as being professional in-law as well. he converted to can a toll schism. she helped him convert because she is hindu. his priest is one of her best friends. >> steve: small world. >> lawrence: she felt as how she thought that's what he needed in his life. she doesn't want to put the cart before the horse. she thinks it's too soon to talk about being second lady. she never thought she would be a senator wife either. >> brian: he has that link to silicon valley. he set up that huge david sacks situation out where raised $12 million. one of the things president trump one someone who can raise money or has money or in doug burgum's case do both. >> ainsley: if they become vice president all of those billionaires will give their money to the two of them. tim scott is another one. >> brian: doing a lot. >> ainsley: billionaires, too. if he chooses tim scott then all those billionaires will put their money. >> steve: kind of like the apprentice show. he would divide the room. >> lawrence: how he is doing it. >> ainsley: who is going to bring you the most money? >> steve: this is your assignment, go out there brian and i were in one with geraldo selling wedding dresses brian and i had been married to women for decades. we both wound up buying wedding dresses. >> brian: elton john situation where you switch he was married once, too. i would bring this up. geraldo got to the finals. he is not getting to the finals this time. >> ainsley: raised so much money. all contributed a lot to help him. that's fascinating. i look forward of seeing more of her and hearing more of his interview. how many children do they have? >> lawrence: three. >> ainsley: good job. >> lawrence: thank you. i can't sit wait for you guys. try to get all of these house before the president decides. >> brian: i'm going to be in the air in north dakota on sunday. if i see a text can i turn around the plane? if he doesn't choose doug burgum. >> ainsley: i went to charleston for tim scott we will show you that interview tomorrow with him and his fiance. >> steve: if you are waiting for the. >> steve: maybe he will change his mind. >> lawrence: our plea to the former president is you may want to watch these interviews because they may impact your decision. >> steve: marco rubio texted me on friday said he wanted to talk about this and he never texted me back. for some reason, he doesn't want to be on this conventional wisdom is maybe he knows he's the pick. or maybe he knows he's not the pick. then again, he is the only one of the top 4 who would have to quit their day job he would have to quit the u.s. senate because he and trump are from the same state. we but the that out there for marco rubio. >> brian: do we know for sure he has to quit the senate. just to run? >> steve: what i would heard is he would quit the senate and take up residency in washington. and if your residence is a different district can't represent. >> brian: ron desantis can name himself a senator he is term limited out. >> brian: let's see if they all show up at the debate. >> ainsley: okay. >> steve: marco rubio, if you change your mind, you got my number. >> brian: i move my hand one time and ainsley mocks me. >> ainsley: let's get to this. the second illegal migrant accused of killing a 12-year-old girl appearing in a texas court while heart broken family pleads for justice and change. >> we have to stop burying my kids. it's not right. >> you can't tell me fit with an ankle monitor girl in texas last week appearing in court. this happened yesterday. and this guy had marks on his arm. prosecutor say the wounds are from jocelyn nungaray. she is tried fighting off her attackers. >> lawrence: suspects are being held on $10 million bond and the d.a. has not ruled out the death penalty. >> ainsley: jocelyn's heart broken mother is begging for border security to be heightened as she prepares for her daughter's funeral tomorrow. >> i wanted the nation, all around the world, to understand that she was a child. she was my child. she was my first born. she had admiration, dreams, and aspiring goals that she wanted to do in life. she was going to make it. she was going to do things. these illegal men took that opportunity from my family of watching her become this amazing person. this has got to stop. we have to stop burying our kids. it's not right. we have to have more reinforcement when it documents letting people in. this is not okay. not okay. >> you know, screening people like i have said before. you're not going to tell me that with an ankle monitor you're good to go. there is people you don't wake up one day and decide you are going to commit this horrific crime. these are people who come used to doing this type of things. it's just sad that i mean it happens all over the country. we need a safer country. >> lawrence: what great point from the grandfather. people already committing crimes on their own country. they emptied the jail and now we have to deal with it. i'm glad the d.a. is putting the death penalty on the table. >> ainsley: when you come across the border and then they slap a ankle monitor on you and then they let you into the country until they can figure out if you have a criminal record if they can get that information from your country. then they go and try to find out. they take off the ankle monitor if you haven't committed a crime in the past. but keep it on if you have. when this little girl was struggling the last two hours of her life, clawing her way, trying to survive, no telling what these men did to her. one of them had an ankle monitor on. and he cut it off two days later. why are you in our country if we can't find out if you have a criminal past, or if you do have a criminal past? >> brian: yeah, evidently they were drunk and this guy victor antonio martinez hernandez tried to get in four times. on the fourth time he gets in commits this murder and looking into gang affiliation. gangs realize this is the time to get here and coming here. the amount of criminals coming in is increasing. look at the percentage. now, the argument on the debate will be well, mostly illegal immigrants don't commit crimes, one is too many. you don't even belong here. have to be background checked to get here. do things the right way years to get here even to get a green card. these people are breaching the system. not be let, in period. >> lawrence: i'm sure the former president as he reaches out to all these families is remembering their names and most positive is going to be brought up on the debate stage. if you are joe biden, what do you say? >> brian: does he know any of the names? >> lawrence: probably won't. >> ainsley: over to you, steve. >> steve: all right, ainsley, lawrence, brian, thank you. s the bored, as you were just talking about is set to be one of the big issues tomorrow night at the debate. it's down to the wire for trump and biden and now hillary clinton who debated both candidates is giving the president a pep talk writing, quote: trump unleashed a blizzard of interruptions, insults and lies that overwhelmed the moderators, these ploys will fall flat if mr. biden is as direct and forceful as he was engaging republican hecklers they state of the union address in march. it's a waste of time try to repute mr. trump's arguments like in a normal debate. unfortunately mr. biden starts from a disadvantage because there is no way he can spend as much time preparing as i did 8 years ago. >> steve: somebody prepared for many debates mike huckabee who also debated mr. trump in 2016 joins us now. mike, good morning to you. >> good morning, steve. >> steve: what do you make of hillary saying it's a waste of time to try to fact-check him in real time. let the facts speak for themselves. and if joe is off. it's because he is running the country although we know for the last 10 days or so he has not been running the country in public. >> i can't bhag a fact-check would look like. he would say all the videos of him are cheap fakes. if they're let's see the real ones. of course they haven't shown those. the fact is the border is a mess. the economy is in a toilet. the world is on fire. crime is rampant across the country. middle class families can't afford groceries and gasoline and joe biden is responsible those are the facts. donald trump is can go to the debate and they can cut his mic off. the more he talks the worse. one is the yelling screaming joe that we saw at the state of the union basically hollering get off my lawn. we could see that joe. the run that must have been given something to jack him up. or we could see the joe that is fumble, mumble, stumble joe that freezes on stage. either way, the smart play for donald trump, let joe talk. the more he talks, i think the more people say yeah, president trump looks like the right choice and that's where we will go with it. >> steve: well, you did debate mr. trump. and one of the things about mike huckabee on the presidential stage. you would get a lot of laughs. you and trump both worked crowd essentially at the debates. but there is no crowd at tomorrow night's debate. and i don't know if the other person's microphone is going to be turned off while joe is talking's mic is going to be turned off. i think it's going to be kind of boring just because you are not going to hear all the extra stuff. people yelling at each other or overtalking or anybody applauding. >> well, it's going to be a very sterile environment. i'm surprised that joe wanted it that way because he can't in any way feed off the crowd. now, you could say well donald trump can't a either. but donald trump understands the power of television in a way joe doesn't. and here's going to be the problem for joe biden. if he goes to that yelling thing. it's going to come across as irrational crazy man because television is medium. in the crowd context. there is no context. if is he stumbling then it's a close up shot and you see his eyes and see his lips fumble. it's really a bad forum for joe biden more so than donald trump. and donald trump as we know, he can be hilariously funny. he can, you know, be sarcastic. i think he is going to have a great night. he has prepared for it in two ways that people are missing. i hear people say he has not been having these coaching sessions. he doesn't need them. he sat through seven weeks of a trial in which he had to be insulted day after day after day. you can't get better preparation for that and then he has been out on the rally stage. and he has been talking to cheering crowds. he is ready. >> steve: all right. well, you were ready mike, thank you very much for joining us live on this wednesday morning. >> mike: good to see you. tune in to fox tomorrow night for fox news democracy conch of the cnn presidential debate. it's going to be a simulcast. our conch starts at 8:00 eastern time and 9:00 you will see the debate right here on fox. speaking of fox. a "fox & friends" exclusive, more from our series profiling trump's vice president contenders. lawrence talks with j.d. vance and his wife. >> i don't think people really understand how hard he works. and who he creative he is. everything he says and does is
