and how it is said because content and cognition are issues this year. the younger of the two candidate is 78, age and acuity don't always align. president biden's cognitive capabilities have been called into question and i take no delight saying that. my parents are in their 80s, if i'm lucky, i will be there one day, i will be trying to run a remote control, certainly not a nation. some believe cochran, dianne feinstein and thurmond stayed too long. the white house says biden is doing great, that videos are out of context and robert hur levied a cheap shot. it is sad watching this unfold and angry and disasppointed others are allowing it rather than offer an exit. we are seeing alarms. democrats overlook president biden's issues as many republicans rationalize president trump's legal issues. fitness for office matters. or is it about winning? is the vice presidential more important? martin luther said he would rather be ruled by a smart turk than a dumb politician. t everyto long as their side wins, relativism is never a good long-term strategy, joining us are doctor associate researcher politics of public affairs at princeton university and ryan is former senior advisor to secretary hilary clinton, welcome to you both, president wright, president biden's issues get more attention but democrats have a montage of verbal switch of president trump as well, anyone who talks for living is going to make mistakes. is acuity a real issue the cycle it if so for one or both candidates? >> i think it's both but more scrutiny including those by his own party is abided and perhaps a big problem for trump if he was running against anyone else and any other year with the candidate was someone that was younger than him but it's not and trump gets a lot of free passes because he is running like a celebrity not a politician and that's a huge benefit that he has he's always in outrageous things and many people think are offensive and he misses a lot of words, strings weird sentences together. people drop under brush it off as entertainment and showmanship and that's what comes with trump. he has not been held to the same standard but you better bet that this benefits him and hurts biden. trey: i am sure that there are democrats who affirmatively want president biden to win but i'm also sure there are democrats that want trump to lose, is there any combination of bad polling or concerns of acuity that can theoretically leave to the selection of a new candidate or is it definitely going to be biden versus trump the matter what. >> it is magical to think that 4200 or 4500 democratic national convention delegates would agree that today is sunday let alone to agree to switch our candidates but why would we switch joe biden is only person to be donald trump, he is the guy and i agree with doctor wright this is an optics not that i'm dismissing the severity of an optics issue but there's a third factor here on top of age because their identical age and mental acuity as doctor wright said they both have their lapses, this is flat out health that we never talked about, going back to 2015, donald trump forged a doctor's note like some of us did when we were in fourth grade, i certainly did, he basically deceived america or did not or was nontransparent when he went to walter reed hospital for no reason until said it was a colonoscopy that he decided to do unscheduled. there are multiple aspects to this. if this was about it was healthier or cognitive, everyone is out of luck we should have nominated these two guys, but we did they were each the oldest with elective. this is who they are and no matter who wins the good be really old with elective that should not be driving cars that does not mean they can't be good president. trey: for the record of my parents are watching i never forged a doctor's note, my dad is a doctor and i would not be alive today had i forged a doctor's note that doctor wright it looks like trump is making some inroads with the voters of color but might've slipped a bit, you will polling expert but i am not, from where i sit it looks like he's making some inroads but ground to make up from a numbers or constituency standpoint where it is the former president need to shore up support to be able to win. >> it is moderate republicans and swing voters, that's the group that put them in the white house in 2016 and took it away in 2020. i think the shifts in the gains in his favor over attached to one demographic but is because everybody is angry abiding for the same reasons and upset about the economy and inflation in particular and upset about immigration in crime, when pulled on the issues republicans tend to benefit but especially in this year it seems voters are putting the blame on biden in a way that is quite extreme and quite beneficial to trump. trey: before i thought you go, you are communication expert, july the 11th donald trump will officially be a convicted felon, how do you handle that you were joe biden. trump is going to say your non- convicted felon it is going to bring up hunter biden, is it best to avoid it, people already know what happened in from a communication standpoint what is the best way to handle it. >> i would work backwards from the fact and i think will have an answer for this poor july 11 because the debate is only four days and you have time to hit the sun, the tanning bed. but at the debate, joe biden is going to work backwards from an issue here's deeply about which is the rule of law and democra democracy. while the trial about a star might seem very far away, there's a through line which is a man donald trump, who every time he comes into contact with the court or with law pretty much dismisses it whether it's january 6, whether his child's, whether his forthcoming trials, the federal trials in georgia and i think when that happens you don't just look at it as name-calling as a felon this is a person that thinks he is above the law is not just in the selfish kind of way, here's what that means for you, it means going forward, this is what he's capable of doing, that comes very much into play with the question you had to doctor wright about pulling, throughout the primaries we are seeing there were people that were supporting president trump who were very concerned were very unhappy if he were convicted that doesn't mean if he was they were going to leave him. but if they were unhappy. we are seeing there hasn't been a huge shift in numbers but there's a soft underbelly including independence and people of color particularly box. here we have the debate these two things the debate is often carried as a distinct moment that is separate and apart from the rest of the campaign and these two moments are very close together, president biden might make these points about democracy and ball and very much appeal to these people that are not happy with donald trump and not sold on going back to joe biden or being with him in the first place. i see a situation where joe biden threads the needle or in any event is an opportunity for him to thread the needle. while donald trump might think saying something about hunter biden and felons is acute lied or a way to negate and to negate the two, it is not and joe biden is going to see something like that coming in on a larger scale, the idea that people are going to be looking to joe biden to be boring and tuning out and nodding off, the last place on what is going to be out of it is when donald trump 10 feet away yelling at them and it's human smelling salts, debate might be the best thing for joe biden in terms of abusing this notion that is one step away from falling over, it might totally boomerang on him. trey: we is another tragedy and human tragedy what is happening at our southern border and our border i represent northern border district as well as this is another loss of life stemming from the illegal immigration crisis which is because of joe biden's border policies. what we included which we passed despite are very slim majority that we hold today was ending catch and release, now we know that these illegal violent criminals who murdered this innocent young beautiful girl we know that they were encountered by border patrol, but because of catching the lease, they were released, therefore unfortunately they committed a heinous, heinous violent murder and they need to be held accountable, how we do that is ensuring that we have the house majority to vote again on secure the border and the senate passes the bill and president trump will sign that into law and because of president trump's policies in the humanitarian crisis think about the human trafficking that has occurred because of the border crisis, there is not about a focus on this but nearly 100,000 minors have been lost completely by joe biden's department of homeland security, they don't even know who they are who were impossible. in the strength of will and a continued campaign against them and part of the equation and there is no way to get around her. no one wants to say that. it breaks my heart to have to say that but it is true anyone is in existential threat to israel, when thomas is eliminated and gaza is governed by a coalition of moderate arab states with israel providing security, then it's time to change iran and iran needs the entire world, the entire western world to be aligned against it including our friends at the european union who continue to circumvent sanctions in business with iran and make it easy for the cash flow to continue which is what trump really created which is strangling his cash flow in the regimes cash flow at the end of his administration and biden turned the it right back on again. trey: speaking of cash president trump had tariffs on china how would a second trump administration counter china both militarily and in terms of their influence in other regions of the world and economically. >> i think more of the same he used tariffs as a real-time negotiating tactic with the europeans when i was serving in brussels and the threat of tariffs brought the europeans to the table on a whole host of economic and noneconomic issues because the tariffs were very fungible and they could be imposed very quickly and they would have an immediate effect, that's what brought people to the table for decades and they would discuss certain issues, whether was agriculture, car exports, you name it, tariffs works. >> politics is all about contrast, people like gaetz, there is a -- of good news in a buffet of bad, the house ethics ended its investigation into whether gates showed images of alleged sexual partners to colleagues on the house floor, the committee voted to continue investigating allegations gates engaged in sexual misconduct, alyssa drug use, gave favors to friends and tried to obstruct the investigation, gates denies all allegations and attacked the committee. ethics is the least coveted committee in congress, literally no one wants to serve on ethics, no fundraising, no publicity, you lose friends, the hours are long. it is the most thankless assignment but is important. members are picked on their investigator backgrounds and their propensity for fairness, i was assigned to the ethics committee by two different speakers and was replaced by john lee ratcliffe a formal federal prosecutor, the chairperson was susan brooks of former federal prosecutor, the current chairperson is a republican former prosecutor, the staff director was one of the most honest ethical people i've ever met, the investigators are apolitical, there are no cameras or committee hearings like those that look like professional wrestling matches. these are run by professionals who gather evidence and interview witnesses, gates has done what he usually does which is attack, he claims he's the most investigated man and all of washington, maybe that's because he's the most worthy of being investigated. after all most people don't have best friend serving times for trafficking young women. most people don't use venmo to pay, he is presumed and is it, a luxury he really affords others but fairness should never be reserved for just friends. the committee is gathering documents and witnesses included a reported interview of a young woman dedicated my life for over 20 years. that is one part, the other is as you just stated the voters in district one deserve an alternative and i can bring the alternative, not just with my military service, all around the globe the person of honor, integrity and character as they walked around and knocked on doors, gone to events just since announcing our campaign and on april 26 the response has been overwhelming in the response being the ready for the alternative, the ready for someone to come in to move away from the chaos that was started i matt and the republican party in congress and evolve the way that they have, when we meet with folks and i meet and speak with folks they will literally come and thank me for running this time and i don't know the prior candidates to challengers had that they are ready for an positive and energetic about it, i truly think it's going to make the differences time, there's so fed up and exhausted with the antics and that's all about self-promotion, constantly trying to get hits and on tv and podcast episodes. folks are over it. in the common sense approach and practical statesman approach. to the office. in gaetz said that's a of our porous border and absurd asylum laws and took the life of a child in our country. a nursing student out for a jog murdered in georgia, a child can't make it to her 14th birthday without being raped, a 12-year-old killed. president biden said he can't comment on pending cases, he did say this. >> folks i'm folks, i'm interesting in fixing it. i will work with anyone to solve these problems, that is my responsibility as president, that is our responsibility as americans. >> trey: he's been in office longer than many of you have been alive. vice president eight years. president for four and he has not had time to tackle this issue. he says he needs four more years. president trump had this to say. >> arrested for savage murder of rachel moran. if i was president, he would have never been able to come in. >> trey: joining us is george p bush. border is number one issue among voters. what should be done at the border to prioritize safety of americans? >> well, if we were an emergency room, you would triage the risk in front of us and that issic taking care of and creating operational control of the border wall. we don't have that. any border patrol official you talk to speaks to overwhelming statistics in last three years during biden administration of 10 million encounters and a million gotaways. if you do probability from m mathematical standpoint, sad story of tragedies you personally recounted and we'll continue unless we get operation al of the border. what president should do to secure our country and protecting our own citizens is investing necessary resources to complete so-called trump wall, hiring border patrol agents and getting rid of policies that attract illegal immigration and drug cartels profit from drug trade and it is a complicated topic. >> trey: democrats are sure to complain they had a bipartisan bill former president trump knicksed, i don't know what part of that bill he is sure to bring that up during the debate and campaign trail. what part of that bill would have saved any of their lives? >> you have had time in the so-called swamp. when you have a bill on immigration tied to foreign aid, it is going to get lost in the discussion and debate and was not given justice to flesh out a real deal that would think longer term about create being incentive for right people to come into the country, not criminals that perpetrate crime against our own citizens. this is election-year politics. to assign executive order grants 550,000 folks to have amnesty is not right. has to be done through normal channels of the house and senate and bringing people together to make sure right people are coming into our country and it is easier to come in legally than illegally. anybody seeking to abuseoir january generous asylum laws will do so. they will come to our country to do nefarious acting knowing they will never see a courtroom. it is no longer a border state issue in texas, it is a national issue that is number one issue on minds of voters. >> trey: i got to get you to help me understand this. i try to understand the other side of the issue, it makes us a better advocate to understand the other side. i do not understand the other side with border securities, do not understand having insecure, unsecure border. as you travel, as you have run for office before, have people made the case whyy woo are better off having a border that is not secure? >> democrats want to get elected and re-elected, they think being sympathetic to undocumented immigrantses theys have political alelegiance in communities, especially the hispanic community. with president trump now achieving ouringably majority support within hispanic community, this political maneuvering has backfired. it has been used to some success in the obama days. why would you lead bad politics and bad policy toward bad politics. they will find that out in the ballot box. data is indicating this is a top issue falling further to the right away from biden and will take a bad night for democrats to realize they need to enforce existing law and allow law enforcement officials to do their job and elect d.a.s that will back men
