good news about a possible hostage deal getting closer. we'll have more on that coming up. first, the number of attacks on u.s. troops mounting in iraq and syria but i rainian proxies. president biden is facing pressure by the pentagon to do more. we'll look at options. asking joseph votel. "your world" starts right now. welcome. i'm edward lawrence. in the nation's capitol in for neil cavuto. this is "your world." we begin with mark meredith at the white house. so no alarm in the back offices there, huh, mark? >> edward, good afternoon. great to see you. the white house says they're doing all they can to stop this conflict from getting any larger than it is. you referenced that "washington post" piece that came out over the weekend. the "washington post" said their holding iran and its proxies accountable. we've seen the attacks. they keep coming. we hear from the white house about what is being done in israel. the u.s. says that more humanitarian aid continues to get into gaza and efforts are underway to pressure the israelis to not target civilians as they carry out counter attacks. the administration says humanitarian aid a pressing concern, this morning during the annual turkey pardon, the president weighed in briefly on getting americans out of captivity. >> is a deal near? >> i think so. >> you think so? >> yes. >> thank you. >> how soon? >> you can see at the end, the president was crossing his fingers. there's a new poll out on nbc that gives the president bad marks. his foreign policy rating with 33% of voter as proving his handling of policy. that's a big change. down nine points from before the hamas terror attacks. what about the threat here at home? especially over this thanksgiving holiday. we pressed officials here for details today at the white house briefing. >> we're watching this all very closely for spill over effects. against the jewish community and the muslim community here in the united states. i'm not tracking any specific credible threat that is being acted on at this time. >> the white house says no specific credible threat right now. for president biden, he's getting ready to head out of town and going to nantucket to celebrate thanksgiving. today is his birthday. >> thanks. good job in the briefing room. with me now, former central commander joseph votel. we learned 64 attacks now on u.s. troops by iranian proxies. what should the u.s. military be doing to stop these attacks? >> certainly what we have to do is have to go after those that are perpetrating this attacks. we've seen a little of that. that's occurred the last week or so. this is not something that we can tolerate very long. we have to go after those that are actually perpetrating the attacks. >> so this is a test. you think by the iranians or something more sinister being coordinated against the u.s. to see how we respond? >> i think this is normal activity that we'd see by the iranians or malitias. they always push the red lines to see how much they can get away with us, to try to get to us overreact. the key for us is to figure out what it is that we can do that makes the cost of them greater than the benefit that they derive by orchestrating these attacks. that's really what we're -- really the game that we're in right now with this. >> what do you think about an attack inside iran? or maybe a particular target? would that get them to take notice? >> i think you have to -- probably right. i think i may take it too far to begin with. may get there on the escalation ladder. but there's lots of options they're left with before we have to strike in iran. we can certainly -- we've taken some steps to do that by going directly at those that are attacking us and holding them accountable to that. we can put more pressure on the iraqi government. we can deploy our own targeting task force in to the middle east or iraq or someplaces that would focus on that. so there's a lot of steps that we can take along the way before we step up in to attacking iran. that's a big step. i think the whole idea of deterrence here is to try to deter with a limited option and not have to step up. that's something where you don't fully appreciate what the second ord third order of consequences might be. >> the houthi rebels have hijacked a ship in the red sea. if -- there 80 no israelis on board. it's not an israel ship is. this iran again testing the administration and plus the location of this ship is interesting. very close to the suez canal. >> yeah, the location is an important one. critical waterway, not just for u.s. military resources but for commercial resources that go off over the world. yeah, in this particular case, this is another example where they're testing the limits. i don't know how much control iran actually had over the houthis. they're much more independent. they have more hoff an independent streak. but the fact remains that these are activities that pose a significant security risk, not just to the u.s. but for everybody in most of these waters. >> thanks, general. i appreciate your time. interesting insight. this won't go away. i appreciate it. so it's not just tensions in the middle east weighing on the president. he's struggling in the polls. the president's approval rating hit a new low. 40% approve of what he's doing. 50% do not. donors are expressing concerns about the president's age. he turns 81 today. happy birthday, mr. president. so with me now is gop fund raiser, noel mcpour and crystal knight. these are poor poll numbers. are they really -- is it really people upset about the president's age or policies? when president biden came in, he refused to change course on anything. >> it's a combination of them both. it's a perfect storm right now. what we're looking at, which is very interesting is an incumbent president that is aging, but a lot of it is his cognitive skills. what they're watching play out on television combined with what's going on with his policies from economics to foreign policy. we still have our borders that are in serious condition with people coming in, which actually relate to the wars that are going on because we have a lot of nefarious people coming through the borders. all of these strengths are what republicans have really built their platform on, which is a stronger economy, better borders and especially in wartime, i think a lot of people like the way that republicans handle things. so the donors, back to your points, the donors are looking at this and they're going to be more apt on the republican side to contribute to their favorite candidate, you know, right now. on the democrat side, not so much. >> crystal, is there panic in the white house? the president's poll numbers. in that abc news poll, 42% of 18 to 34-year-olds would vote for president biden but 46% would vote for president trump. that is a group that president biden won the last time around. is there a panic now? >> well, i don't know if it's a panic. i think there's cause for concern. these numbers are dismal. it's clear that the biden administration and his team has a messaging problem. they really need to hone in on what this administration has done for young voters. when we talk about the save act and how that helps with student loan repayment, that is something that this administration really has an opportunity to message to young voters on. making sure that if this cease fire does happen between hamas and israel, that is something as well that many young voters according to this poll have stated that they have strong disapproval for. but it goes back to messaging on how his base and how young voters feel about the policies that he's taken and the positions that he's taking this country leading in to 2024. i think that there is time to turn this around. we're 11 months away. so if his team is watching, hopefully they're trying to figure out what the resonates with young voters and how can we message to them so that they feel confidence about president biden moving in to 2024. >> martha: this is what i want to bring noel in. we saw republicans up poll after poll and something happened and democrats surged. you can see the handling of the israel and hamas war, disapprove. 18 to 34-year-olds. 70% disapprove. that's a young voters there. you think we'll see the same thing in this next year? we have the president sitting on billions of dollars in cash left to spend. could he spend that and buy votes for lack of a better term? >> he can. but what republicans need to do is take that same -- when you're looking at something like that with 70%, those are huge numbers. if the republicans are smart, they'll build on that low approval rating. the democrats, can they turn it around? i don't know. they have so many other things behind the bad polling. they have the economy. democrats and biden says bidenomics and it's fantastic. people don't feel it. so even though they're saying, nothing to see here, everything is fine. it's not so. >> noel, we have to leave it there. this is a debate that will continue. come back and talk about this again. the white house is saying that a hostage deal could be closer than ever. we'll ask a top spokesman for the israeli military. if you're looking to fly this holiday, get out early, a cross country storm is closing in. we'll have the latest. but first, the nation remembering rosalynn carter today after news of her passing. the latest on tributes for the former first lady as her funeral is being planned. lowe's knows black friday savings should be more than just one day. that's why we're giving you black friday deals every day. where you can find the best value all november long. shop now and save big, in-store or online. 18 years from tonight, grant gill will become a legend. when he totally kills it at his improv class's graduation performance. knees will be slapped. suds will be sprayed. people won't know what hurts more: their cheeks, or their sides. that's why he's already keeping himself in-shape and razor sharp today with health tips and wellness tools from aarp. to help make sure his health lives as long as he does. because the younger you are, the more you need aarp. when moderate to severe ulcerative colitis takes you off course. put it in check with rinvoq, a once-daily pill. when i wanted to see results fast, rinvoq delivered rapid symptom relief and helped leave bathroom urgency behind. check. when uc tried to slow me down... i got lasting, steroid-free remission with rinvoq. check. and when uc caused damage rinvoq came through by visibly repairing my colon lining. check. rapid symptom relief... lasting steroid-free remission... ...and the chance to visibly repair the colon lining. check, check, and check. rinvoq can lower your ability to fight infections, including tb. serious infections and blood clots, some fatal; cancers, including lymphoma and skin cancer; death, heart attack, stroke, and tears in the stomach or intestines occurred. people 50 and older with at least 1 heart disease risk factor have higher risks. don't take if allergic to rinvoq as serious reactions can occur. tell your doctor if you are or may become pregnant. put uc in check and keep it there with rinvoq. ask your gastroenterologist about rinvoq and learn how abbvie can help you save. >> edward: the nation remembering rosalynn carter. services are scheduled to begin next week. david spunt is in plains, georgia with the latest. let's go to you. >> hi, edward. she will be buried november 29 in plains, georgia. she was dubbed the steel magnolia by the washington insiders when she and jimmy carter moved in to the white house in 1977. by herself, her family and husband of 77 years. jimmy carter is 99 years old. the oldest ex-president ever in history. he's been in hospice earlier this year. she was active as a first lady and a very willing participant in cabinet meetings, a trusted adviser. a lot of statements came since her passing, the most important from jimmy carter. he said rosalynn was my equal partner in everything that i accomplished. she gave me wise guidance and encouragement. she was born august 1927. her name, rosalynn, eleanor rosalynn, not rosalyn. she married jimmy carter, the only president that graduated from the u.s. naval academy in 1946. she spoke up about mental health issues. the white house released a statement that reads that as part of first lady of the united states, rosalynn was a champion for equal rights and opportunities for women and girls and advocate for mental he health. i will end you with this interesting fact. an important fact. jimmy carter first met rosalynn when she was about a day old in 1927. he was 3 years old. so these people have known each other for 96 years. he continues to receive hospice care in plains. she's being remembered as an amazing first lady that came back to live in her beloved plains and will be buried next week. edward?
