the region. our message to anybody, and i can't confirm this report, our message to anybody who seeks to escalate and deepen the conflict, be mindful of how seriously we take our national security interests. 220 palestinians killed in the west bank, 197 since the beginning of the year, and how concerning that netanyahu is opening a new war front in the west bank considering -- >> the president spoke to this himself out in the rose garden talking about how dangerous extremists in the west bank are killing innocent palestinians. it's deeply concerning. each and every one of them is a tragedy, too. >> it's expected the senate will move forward to confirm jack liu as ambassador to israel. how do you see his role and impact on negotiations, is there a way to -- i know why there is concern with israel about fuel, but in terms of power or other of those services, you talked about wanting to see restoration, is there some other package that could be moved forward that you think could provide some relief to civilians, but not undermine israel's military goals? >> i'm not sure what you mean by package. i'll try it this way, you tell me if i'm wrong. we look forward to the confirmation hearing for ambassador to israel, it's a terrific thing, he's more than qualified to be our ambassador to israel and very excited to get him over there so he can get on the ground and start leading our efforts to support israel and their fight against hamas but also to help us integrate and continue to lead the effort to get humanitarian assistance to people of gaza and our expectation is that mr. lui will take the lead on the issues once he's on the ground. question about a package -- >> when i said package, like complement of those different types of utilities or resources that would be beneficial but are not undermining the israeli military capability. is there some way to try to have less of what you are asking for that could be a benefit. >> we would argue and have argued that all of those essential services as i mentioned in my opening statement are critical, all important and all urgent right now. particularly fuel. l and fuel is related to the water problem because they use it to, for the pumps at the desalination plants. we would argue they are all critical and we are working this in realtime. some food got in on the trucks today, bottled water, i'm sorry, water -- some water got in on the trucks today, sorry, no fuel has gotten in. and the existing stocks are dang near down to 0 and that's perilous for the hospital, water pumps, and so we are working hard with israel to make sure we can find some accommodations to get fuel in. i've heard this argument as particularly by, you know, some of the republicans in the house that you know, or even in the senate, by putting fuel in there, we are helping hamas. i want to be very clear on this. we have seen no indication, none, that hamas has gotten their hands on any of the humanitarian assistance that has gone in, none of it. it goes from these u.n. trucks to humanitarian organizations and the u.n. for delivery to the people of gaza, that's what we have seen with every single one of them and the fuel, the fuel existing in tanks that they could tap simply went to existing legitimate humanitarian needs and we will and we have tried to make assurances to the israelis that we will continue to monitor fuel should it go in with the same diligence that we have in our u.n. partners monitoring the food and the water and the medicine. >> netanyahu said the fuel is being withheld by hamas. have you had any kind of confirmation from him or pushback from him trying to get fuel into the gaza strip? >> the israelis have expressed concerns about getting into gaza and we understand where the concerns are coming from because hamas wants this fuel as well to keep their tunnels lit and to support their own needs, their -- for their own vehicle and power need. it's a legitimate concern, no question about that. our argument is that it's also legitimate need of the innocent civilians in gaza who are suffering and desperate need of continued medical care and freshwater to drink and so what we are working on with israel is accommodation, they can be confident that it's not going to go to hamas, and we confident it's going to get in and get to the people in need and we are working on that. i won't talk about our diplomatic conversations in any great detail. i'll tell you we understand concerns, they are not illegitimate and we are working very hard to address those. >> admiral, i believe you have -- the president has, a lot of people have said the information coming from the gaza health ministry is not reliable because it's from hamas. on social media terrible things are happening, presumably to civilians, children in gaza. does the united states have its own estimate of what's happening and how many people in gaza and where should the rest of us get accurate information on that? >> we are doing the best we can to try to get an assessment of the scope of the casualties and you can imagine we are pulling from multiple different sources. we are not taking the ministry of health number at face value, and we are talking to partners on the ground now that we have direct linkage with aid organizations on the ground as the trucks are getting in, we are getting more fidelity on the situation. so we are pulling from multiple sources. and without spouting a whole number here, i can tell you we are convinced that there have been many thousands of civilian deaths in gaza thus far in the conflict and said before and say it again, each and every one of them is a tragedy. each and every one of them we should work to prevent. we know that each and every one of them means there's some grieving family somewhere out there that's going to need support and help. we know that. so we are continuing to monitor as best we can and continuing to stay in touch with our israeli counterparts about the need to reduce and minimize civilian casualties as much as possible. >> back to this blast in northern gaza, what is clear is that there are and will be many, many casualties as a result. the president and everyone on down have made very clear that they are urging israelis to minimize civilian casualties as much as possible. is it clear at this point that that is not happening, that civilian casualties are not being minimized? >> if you are asked about that specific explosion, i don't know. i don't have any -- >> also with that -- >> as i've said repeatedly, m.j., we are not going to react to every event in realtime but certainly recognize that civilians have been hurt, civilians have been hurt to the tune of many thousands, that infrastructure has been damaged by these airstrikes. we recognize that. we observed that and we are not accepting of any single civilian death in gaza. they are all tragedies, and we continue to work and will continue to work with the israelis about the need to respect human life and to try to limit civilian casualties. what i said yesterday, though, needs to be repeated. that unlike russia and ukraine, and unlike what hamas did on the 7th of october, the killing of civilians is not a war aim of israel. i'm not denying that it's happening. of course it is. and it's tragic. but it is not the goal of israeli forces to go out and deliberately take innocent civilian life and they have tried to make efforts to minimize that. >> but would you go as far as to say that israel is not successfully minimizing civilian casualties in gaza? >> i would say -- what i said to you before. it's obvious to us that they are -- that they are trying to minimize. >> secretary blinken said today u.s. officials are in close communication with americans stuck in gaza wanting to leave, phone calls, emails, via whatsapp. what's being communicated to those americans in those messages? >> i would refer you to the state department to speak to that more specifically than me here at the nsc, but we understand it's to keep them informed about the efforts to try to get them out and know we are not tiring and we are going to keep trying to do that. >> you have specific guidance on where they should go -- >> i don't. you have to talk to state department about that. they are in direct contact. >> john, hamas is claiming they will free some foreign hostages in the next few days. has the u.s. been alerted to this by official channels? >> first i'm hearing that report. we have to see whether it pans out or not. obviously we want that to be the case. >> are you hearing about the crossing into egypt opening tomorrow to allow some injured palestinians out? >> i've not heard that report. >> given the airstrikes in, on the refugee camps near gaza city, would now be the time for a humanitarian pause? i know you've said u.s. position is no ceasefire, you don't support a ceasefire. but would now be the time for humanitarian pause? >> without getting into the specific moment we are in right now or litigating this from the white house podium, we do believe humanitarian pauses could be of value but they have to be -- you have to have -- has to be credible support on both sides here for where to do it, when to do it and what purpose. and we are working with partners in the region, including those with a direct line of communication with hamas to see if that's possible. the goal would be to get aid in, to maybe get people out that want to evacuate, and also valuable humanitarian pause every now and then would be valuable if there is a serious effort to get hostages out. you need a pause on the fight to think do that safely. >> can you talk more about the humanitarian aid and the flow and what is keeping more and more, larger numbers of trucks from going in? is it israel and egypt, not agreeing to allow that to happen, and is it -- >> there's and a myriad -- there's been a myriad of factors here. i mean, part of it is, you know, there's got to be an inspection regime for each truck so that everybody can have confidence in what is in those trucks. so that they have to be opened up, be inspected, and that obviously slows things down. it's not like october 6th, it's now a war zone, and there are belligerents here and make sure that what's going in is legitimately humanitarian assistance. and because it's a war zone, you know, it's not -- the trucks themselves, their travel in country is potentially dangerous and strikes on roads and infrastructure that may alter how they get to the destination and making sure there are people on the other end to receive the material and get it to people desperately in need. just like a natural disaster, i'm not trying to minimize this, but in times of a natural disaster, delivery of essentials just getting harder and it's harder. a lot of factors in here, but we are working through all that and again, while we admit it's a trickle and not good enough, it still seems to be on the upper trajectory day-by-day, and that's a good thing. and we do think, hope that within, you know, coming days we can get up to 100 trucks a day. still not going to be enough, but a lot more than what we are doing right now. >> mr. kirby, thousands of palestinians have fallen so far, including 160 of my own relatives. how many palestinian civilians need to be killed before the united states calls for a ceasefire? >> first of all, my condolences to you and your family. are you in touch with some -- >> well -- not as much as i can. >> not as much as you would like to be. i'm very sorry to hear that, sorry to hear that, i can see it's obviously personal for you. it's personal for the president, too. we don't want to see any more civilian casualties so in terms of a ceasefire, our concern with that is that hamas benefits to the tune of being able to refit, renew themselves, plan and execute additional attacks. and as i said yesterday, right now is not the time for a general ceasefire. it is, however, the time to consider pauses in the fighting long enough so that folks like your relatives and family members can get this incredibly needed humanitarian assistance and perhaps a way to get out if they want to get out. so we are supporting that, and we'll see what we can do. but again, my deepest condolences. >> another question if i may. now, you know, you talk about creating a safe corridor where gazans can leave if they want to. does the united states guarantee it's not going to be like 1948, and they are not allowed to return? >> as i said in my opening statement, our policy is not to have some sort of permanent settlement outside of gaza for the people who call that home. we want them to be able to go back home and do so safely and effectively. we are not calling for them -- their permanent refuge from the country. >> and during the weekend prime minister netanyahu referenced a malachite, talking about the genocide in the biblical times, is that a concern for the u.s. administration? >> i'm afraid i'm not qualified to speak on biblical history here, but obviously i think we have been crystal clear, not only there, but around the world on our concerns about genocide about by any leader and that's not what we are seeing israel desire to do. they are going after hamas terrorist, after their leadership, that attacked their country on october 7th in a gross and barbaric fashion. they are not interested in genocidal activity to the people of gaza. now again, we recognize there have been many thousands of casualties. way too many, should be 0, we understand that. but their war aim as i said earlier is not to target the innocent civilians of gaza. their war aim is to go after hamas. >> thank you, john. the people in this country making violent anti-semitic threats, are they domestic terrorists? >> i don't know that we are classifying people as domestic terrorists for that. i mean, that's really a question better left to law enforcement. i'm not aware that there's been such a characterization of that. >> ok. the fbi director said today the ongoing war in the middle east has raised the threat of attack in the americans to the united states to a whole other level. has the white house considered the possibility that a terrorist could be in the country right now after crossing the southern border? >> peter, we are always concerned about the potential presence on u.s. soil of terrorists, coming from overseas. something we are always worried about. >> but there was this bulletin last week, c bp in san diego, said militants may be encountered. 600,000 known got-aways just in the last fiscal year. >> yeah. >> is there any heartburn about leaving the border in such a condition that one of those 600,000 could be a terrorist? >> let me just break this down for you just a little bit here. first of all, i can't speak to this intelligence report that was leaked to the media. i would not do that. i can tell you that we are constantly monitoring as best we can all ports of entry to the country for the potential arrival of anybody who might wish us harm. and one of the things the president asked for in this supplemental was additional funding for border security, for like 1500 more border patrol agents and better technology at the border. i mean, so again, we would urge congress to take a look at that supplemental request and pass it. but if the general gist of your question are we taking the potential threat seriously, of course we are. >> is it possible somebody who wants to commit a terrorist attack during an elevated threat crossed the southern border into the united states already? >> i couldn't possibly answer that question, peter. all i can do is tell you that we have remained vigilant to that potential threat. >> john, can you give us an update how talks with the qataris are going to help the hostages get out? >> what i can assure we are having discussions with our partners in the region and qatar has been useful in that regard. discussions about getting the hostages out. >> following up on m.j.'s question. >> idf confirmed the attack on the refugee camp and the hospital was an israel one. how do you square with what you are saying about israel trying to avoid civilian deaths? >> again, you are getting me unawares here, jeff. i didn't see that comment or that report. so i -- i don't want to speculate about what might have happened -- >> john: all right, so we are going to jump out of the white house briefing, we have trey yingst up live in southern israel and more information on what the idf confirms was a strike at jabalia refugee camp, densely populated area of gaza. what do we know? >> yeah, john, i'm going to step out of the frame here and have my cameraman push in here. you can see the israelis have fired a flare over the northern part of gaza. we are learning more about the strike that took place earlier today on the jabalia refugee camp. israelis say fighter jets targeted the commander of hamas's central battalion, he was responsible, according to the israelis for a number of attacks and you can see more flares fired there, that will illuminate the sky so you can see the area. and explosion there in the distance. as i'm giving you this information here, john, some sort of firefight taking place in the northern part of the gaza strip beneath where the flares are fired. heavy machine gunfire and targeted airstrikes, israelis appear to be calling in some air support. as for the response, though, from the israeli military following palestinian media report that states many civilians were killed, israelis said they were targeting a senior hamas commander who leads the jabalia battalion, and they say they killed more than 50 operatives in the northern part of the strip. active how the fighting is and challenging, and john kirby, his statement, it's a challenging spot for the americans to be in. the question is how many civilian casualties is considered acceptable in war, and war is incredibly messy, it is tragic, and there are so many innocent lives that are lost as a result. and so the israelis have to make a calculation of their own, when they go to take out a senior commander that is surrounded by a civilian population. that's a calculation that the israelis make and it is a calculation they will be criticized for as the war continues because they have killed a number of top hamas officials and commanders but many civilians have died as a result. john. >> aishah: trey, you are right. john kirby was asked directly about the camp attack and he actually said he had not seen the report so did not want to answer. but you so eloquently described what he also said. i want to ask you, though, you've got some palestinian sources on the ground there that you talked to pretty much every day. this camp is in the northern area that the idf has been constantly telling the palestinians there, the civilians there to get out of. do we have any sort of reporting or indication that those civilians would have left this refugee camp? >> so we have been talking with palestinian sources inside the gaza strip since this war erupted and our understanding is that many did heed those warnings and head south. the problem is, some just didn't leave. they said they didn't have the that they were going to stay despite the warnings by the israeli military. remember, the israelis for days dropped leaflets in tha leaf le intended for gaza, the majority did land in the gaza strip but you can see in arabic, there are instructions for the palestinian civilians and jabalia is about right here on the map, and arrows saying to go south, the valley that separates the north and the south, and humanitarian zone, israelis say they are not going to strike. we should note, despite the calls for civilians to go south, the israelis are continuing their airstrikes in the southern part of the strip but their focus remains on the north, just behind us over the border, where earlier today we actually saw israeli forces operating. you could see them outside of tanks, infantry troops walking alongside the tanks and apcs, joined by d9 armored bulldozers clearing a path for the forgeses in the strip. israel, fighting in an urban environment where civilians, despite being warned, have not left. >> john: trey yingst with the latest on the jabalia refugee camp and northern gaza. we will talk to you later on. right now, jump to tel aviv and rear admiral daniel hagari, the idf spokesman having his main briefing. >> many were killed here now, and infrastructure destroyed. it's a complex situation. we lost competence in this. we advised two soldiers of israel who fell. this evening we killed the beali. he is the essential head of the strip since we came in there. he also has a part -- took part in the butchery of october 7th. while he was killed, many others were killed as well. many with him in the structure and underground as well, underneath the ground. caused other areas, there was a wide underground area which also collapsed. and from there they have -- the entire infrastructure was destroyed and many of them were killed. the hamas terrorists still keep using the civilians intentionally in a most cruel manner as human shields. they don't care about -- he built this infrastructure on purpose, intentionally under the homes of civilians and leaves behind not only butchery of israel of october 7th but all the one that is causing civilians of gaza to get killed underneath those structures. again we are -- we are going to have -- we have warned them to ask the civilians to move south of wadi gaza where they will be safer. we are going to continue working over there. we continue acting there against every terrorist in entire area of gaza and the red sea, missile was taken down by us by the aro. the first time the aro system was used and successfully so. also the aircraft also took down two aircraft -- two items that were coming towards them. also we have also ships. we are in multi-multi-way defense. air and sea as well. all of them in order to protect the citizens of israel again and stressing, it's all -- all of israel, the entire area as well as the south. many are working on behalf -- and including yemen, trying to divert attention from gaza, we are remaining focused in the war in gaza, we will protect ourself, defend ourself everywhere we need to. we are working together in coordination with the u.s., central command of the u.s.. centcom, we have worked with them in the past, has proven themself. we transfer and transmit to each other intelligence and everything else together with the fifth american fleet. we work as one in order to neutralize -- to neutralize threats in israel. idf knows on its own to protect the interest of interest of israel and we will respond in every way we can whenever we decide to do so at the time and place of our choosing. as far as lebanon, we don't have any injuries or casualties in the north. sout we have attacked it. we are going to respond to every attempt to shoot at us and any that comes or tries to shoot at us, will fire at us, will be 317 so far were killed by -- killed by idf personnel. do everything we can to bring the abductees back. we will provide you with credible correct and accurate information. it's very important. we will do so all the information -- do so at all times. do not -- do not promulgate rumors. don't pass them on. >> the defense systems -- multi-layered. and additional projects from security. develop the fence, i'm not going to give where this is -- we are not going to give you details on how it's not appropriate that they -- the military industry is working together with the idf and everyone else. murderous enemy that uses its own citizen, did not allow them to go south. shot the terrorists, a lot of people continue going south. also areas which are medical areas in the south. we have to find solution, shifa, it's against international law, it's a criminal act. we'll do whatever we can. >> any details you can provide about the two soldiers who were killed, who died today? just defensive mode or also offensive? >> first of all, regarding the death of the two commandants, these face-to-face combat. it's -- we are -- we are -- when you take a stronghold of hamas with equipment, underground area, with very important intelligence information. they died courageously fighting them. these are complex battles and we will continue -- there's no other way to do it. i repeat, first of all, we have to see we defend the israeli -- already with that, israelis in israel. now, we are expanding this, reaction, as i've said, we will know to protect our interests we'll decide what we will decide at the right time and right place. >> are we encirclings we'll decide what we will decide at the right time and right place. >> are we encircling gaza? >> not to say what we are going to do, but we are expanding our land actions in a manner that will serve the purposes, the goals of -- in order to destroy hamas. do whatever is necessary to do so. we will not explain now which way we are going to do what so the enemy will hear it. hamas is built -- builds a picture what hear in communication and hear in public. so we want to protect our forces and when things happen, have already happened, then you will hear it. we cannot provide this information in advance which hamas will hear about. we are here to demolish hamas. >> you see hamas using children and also you didn't mention the number abducted. >> we updated the families, 240 and it has not changed since morning. because you see, the reason the number is growing, there are foreigners who are harder to get ahold of their families, takes longer to find out and that's why the numbers are growing. we'll do every effort to bring the abductees -- children, as far as hamas using children -- i ask -- look, if something happens out in the field i'll provide a credible -- i told you the logic, the logic hamas use about -- about -- i've said that because we have -- we have credible, we have proof to that. if you learn anything about the children being used, we will advice you of it. >> is attacking iran on the table, the possibility? >> yemen is actually two -- 1300 to 1500 kilometer from here and their fight between them -- part of it is connected to -- the houthis, some of them, are getting information and power and strength, material from iran. it's -- it's a proxy. houthis are a proxy. we have a defense for it and in fact, we have the maximum, nothing is -- our defense is very strong in this case and succeeded in taking down everything that they sent from there and we'll do everything we can in the future. i repeat, the same answer. th talk in here in the media. we have to protect the interest -- we have to do everything in the right place and right time, without elaborating over here. thank you very much, have a good evening. >> aishah: all right, you were watching there live a press briefing with the idf spokesperson and went through a lot of different things, including what happened today at the jabalia refugee camp in northern gaza, targeting a commander of a battalion and a large number of terrorists were with him, and wide underground area underneath the refugee camp that essentially collapsed in itself and the entire infrastructure was damaged in the attacks today. >> john: hagari talking about the threat from the south, from the houthi rebels in yemen, firing missiles and drones toward a southern city, very close to the southern jordanian city, by the way, literally just across the jordan river valley there. so they would have to be very careful when firing the rockets off. but saying intercepts by israelis using the aro system were successful. >> aishah: concerns how it may spill over into the region, jordan watching very closely. trey yingst is live in southern israel. i don't know if you can hear the idf spokesperson as he briefed the press, but tell me about what you are seeing right now on the ground. are things now escalating? >> yeah, guys, good afternoon. generally at night things will get more intense along the israel-gaza border and deep inside gaza where the fire fights are taking place. you heard hagari confirming that two israeli soldiers were killed today inside the strip during a battle with hamas. they were from the gavati reconnaissance unit, a unit, we have talked with many of the soldiers, a time last week we brought you images from their staging ground sitting on a tank talking with one of the reservists preparing to go into gaza. and hagari tonight had the message the soldier had, they have to destroy hamas and difficult battle ahead. we talked 30 minutes ago on air discussing the battlefield for the israelis and the calculation how many civilian deaths are acceptable. we know they are fighting in this urban battle environment. it is a challenging environment to fight in. it's part of the reason that top israeli defense officials, including the defense minister himself has told fox news he is referring to defense secretary austin about the urban environment, especially the leading coalition in mosul, but talk about the information and how the story developed and how important it is that we are careful with the information we are getting. palestinian media indicated the israelis struck the jabalia camp killing many palestinians. we did not go to air with the number they gave us, but i'll give you the number now. i've been texting with a hamas official inside gaza city and sent me pictures about the people killed there today, and says 400 martyrs were killed in the new israeli massacre in jabalia. we cannot confirm that number and provides photos but just maybe two dozen bodies in the photos he provided. so it's critical we are looking at the information and analyzing it, getting information, not just from inside gaza, but posing that information to the israelis and they have come back and indicated they say they were targeting a senior hamas commander and killed him along with dozens of hamas militants inside the stronghold. this illustrates how the israelis are going about this here and making that calculation how many civilians will die. they understand it's a complex operation, an operation that will not take weeks but rather months and as you can hear behind me, they strike with not just artillery units, but also airstrikes. so the jabalia incident is another example what we will see in the coming days and weeks, the israelis plan to push further into gaza city, 80% of hamas, according to the military, is located. but they will have to deal with the tunnel systems beneath gaza, another x factor we have not talked about tonight you can hear more from the israeli military about in the coming days. >> john: so trey, so we saw the situation there at the jabalia refugee camp, it's possible there were civilian casualties, we don't know, it comes from the health ministry, essentially the hamas health ministry, and israel says they killed approximately 50, and israel has been talking about and vigorously, may indicate some potential future operation, the al-shifa hospital. that really is the headquarters for hamas. talking with lieutenant colonel peter lerner earlier today, one of the idf spokes people and said to him the fact you are talking so much about this, putting out computer graphics that show where, you know, relatively speaking the hamas headquarters might be, is this a predicate for potentially moving on the hospital? he didn't come right out and say yes, but he did indicate that any place where hamas was using that area as some kind of headquarters or some kind of facility was a legitimate target. so we potentially see, despite the risk for civilian casualties, israel go after some very sensitive targets? >> look, as israeli ground forces ultimately enter gaza city and every indication that we have so far is that they will indeed enter gaza city and hold territory for some time as they conduct these operations. it is important to talk about al-shifa hospital, i'll tell you why. according to the israelis, this is one of the headquarters for hamas inside the gaza strip, and i've been to al-shifa hospital multiple times. nine years ago during the 51 day war between gaza and israel, i went to al-shifa hospital and met with hamas leadership there. it's a huge compound. largest hospital in all of gaza, where many of the casualties are brought when strikes happen or misfires happen all over gaza. and so al-shifa hospital is something you will hear more about in the coming days and weeks. israelis understand if they are going to destroy hamas they will have to be in and around al-shifa hospital, but it's still treating patients. more than 2 million palestinian civilians in the strip, cancer treatment, and dialysis, and hamas is using the hospitals as command center, incredibly complicated part of the story. >> john: thank you for your fabulous reporting. appreciate it. brent sadler, difficult to know where to start, start with the attack on the jabalia refugee camp. an indication now the tempo of operations increases, potentially civilians will be increasingly in harm's way. hamas uses them that way. >> absolutely. i've been listening to the commentary in the press briefings the last hour or so, and what's missing in that, first and foremost, the israeli military is going after military objectives, for military effects, not targeting civilians discriminately as hamas has done. military objective seems to be clear by the body count of hamas leaders, and taking out leadership. >> aishah: can i ask you what comes from all of this, because there's going to be a reaction. we know that we just heard from the turkish prime minister a few days ago, very, very upset, thousands protesting in that country, very upset, they feel like civilians are being targeted. iran is watching and waiting. we are watching hezbollah to see if they attack next. how quickly could things, these proxies, react to something like the idf going after a target like al-shifa hospital? >> i think they already are. it's not a question of if, it's already happening, and i think it's probably going to continue. hamas does have quite a good network for strategic communications and to try and win the propaganda war. so, israel has to be very cautious and losing support in the united states how it goes forward. >> john: great to catch up with you. thank you, appreciate it. thanks for hanging through all the briefings. fox news alert, update from new york state police in the case of threats made against jewish students at cornell university. a live report on that is coming up next. bring in second year columbia law student and vice president of the jewish law student association eli. what's it like to live in your shoes these days? >> thanks for having me on. it's fearful, frightening, disheartening, devastating. many students are afraid like you said to go to class, afraid they are the next target of an anti-semitic attack and many students walk into class now, knowing that some students in their class, their classmates hate them simply for being jews. and i don't know how students are expected to carry that burden on them and carry a law school schedule. >> aishah: eli, this is so troubling and disheartening and i am so, so sorry this is happening to you and so many others across the country. and i wonder, when i see these protestors and the signs, the pro hamas signs, do you feel they even understand what hamas is, and what it represents? or are they perhaps just getting caught up in this emotional social justice movement that they don't quite understand. >> i think it's a mix to be honest. i think there are some that are actual bad faith actors, when you have a student that publicly says the massacre did not happen and it was a hoax, but the rest of the students don't realize they are caught up in the energy, the social justice impact on it, it's incumbent for the administration to take a stronger stance, they are not differentiating between the hamas and civilians and the terror attack and the war. >> john: maybe some don't have the necessary functioning to know the difference here but you would expect faculty at ivy league university would, listen to the letter written from columbia college faculty in support of a student statement of the terror attacks, military operations and state violence did not begin that day but represented a military response by a people who had endured crushing and unrelenting state violence from occupying power over many years. one could regard the events of october 7th as just one salvo in an ongoing war between an occupying state and the people it occupies. what do you make of that? >> horrifying, disgusting and shocking. like you said, i'm not entirely surprised if a student says something along the lines, but faculty, 100 plus faculty making a statement and saying a terrorist attack of the murder, burning, rape of children and women and elderly, is beyond comprehension. and why it's incumbent on the administration of the law school and higher education throughout the country, take a stance, educate students and ensure the faculty are understanding of the situation. >> aishah: eli, we have to go and thanks for sharing your thoughts and perspective, and know there are hundreds more to stand near you and protect you. >> the reality is that the terrorism threat has been elevated throughout 2023 but the ongoing war in the middle east has raised the threat of an attack against americans in the united states to a whole other level. we assess that the actions of hamas and its allies will serve as an inspiration the likes of which we haven't seen since isis launched its so-called caliphate several years ago. >> john: fbi director delivering a clear-eyed warning to congress and the american people about the threat to national security. alejandro mayorkas to answer questions on the border threat. kansas republican senator roger marshall, a member of the committee, he was in the hearing. a little chilling. >> the lesson i learned, it's time to be diligent but not panicked. time for us to make sure we have each other's back, if you see something, say something. >> aishah: can i ask you, did you hear anything from the secretary of homeland security today, mayorkas, that made you feel any confidence in what's happening at our southern border and the way the magnitude of people coming in, we have some numbers. border patrol released over 900,000 migrants into the interior of the united states. these are people who cross between the ports of entry, does not include got-aways or people stopped at the ports of entry. did he say one thing that would make you feel comfortable in the scenario we are in about the threats of the southern border. >> not, and quite the contrary. this secretary of homeland security does not understand how concerned people are back home about their own safety and security. he actually admitted for the first time we had 600,000 got-aways this past year. this secretary has no idea who those people are, where they are, he seems to have no concern, almost apathy towards the 170 people on the terrorist watch list, the 60,000 folks that were on the alien persons of interest list as well. who are the people, where are they, and we want to know what countries they are from as well. so, he just seems to have an attitude toward all of this. >> john: let's not just believe you, rewind the video tape, you asked him that question. >> how many illegal aliens in this country or here on asylum have direct ties to hamas, hezbollah, islamic jihad or the guard corps of iran. >> let me assure you the individuals that pose a risk to our national security are highest enforcement priority. >> do you have any idea what the numbers are? tens, hundreds, thousands? >> an individual who poses a risk to our national security is our highest enforcement priority. >> john: so there's a choice here, was he stone walling you or not know the numbers? >> great question, unwilling, unable. at the end of the day, why americans have no confidence in him, why we introduced a resolution to give him a vote of no confidence in the senate side. we think they should proceed with impeachment of secretary mayorkas. >> aishah: and quickly to wrap this up, you are introducing a bill called where are the terrorists now act to force the department of homeland security to provide congress updates where the migrants are. tell us about this. >> very simply, like the same questions we were asking today, were these people are interest, where are they right now, the known terrorist watch list, where are they, what are they doing, in jail, sent -- all the people that have asked for asylum, hundreds of thousands of people, millions of people, where are they right now as well. we want more communications back from dhs. >> john: just to finish out and finish off the program, put the graphic up on the screen. number of people who came into the country illegally last year. 2,475,669. compared to previous years, the last year of president trump's administration, just 458,000. 6.5 million people since biden became president. >> three times the size of kansas and the secretary will not admit policies are acting like a magnet to people. instead he wants to deflect and point at other people. >> aishah: are you a yes on the israel stand alone package? >> absolutely. this is an opportunity to send a resounding message to the people of israel as well as hamas and iran that we support them. >> aishah: senator, we have to go. >> john: thanks for hanging with us. i'm john roberts
