Still raging today after gaza mounted one of the worst assaults in 50 years. Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu warning therell be a long war beyond israels retaliatory strikes. Lets go to fox correspondent trey yingst on the ground in Southern Israel and, tragically, youve seen some gruesome scenes in this hamas surprise attack. Reporter yeah, howie, im going to have my Cameraman Pan here, were just getting some Rocket Fire Camming off the gaza strip coming off the gaza strip as we talk. The scenes we have seen, really just brutality against the israeli people. It is nonstop fire from from gaza. Yesterday a massacre committed against the israeli population, the latest numbers that we have more than 600 israeli civilians and soldiers. You can hear those explosions in the distance, interceptions by israels iron dome. We do know that as this rocket fire from gaza continues, we expect fire to continue from lebanon, and it has created a difficult situation for Israeli Forces as they face a multifront conflict. This morning rockets and mortars were fired by the Lebanese Militant Group hezbollah, opening up this conflict to a broad Orer Rebellingal broader regional conflict. The Israeli Military says they do Everything Possible to get their civilians back, but we do know more than 100 israeli civilians and soldiers are currently taken Prisoner Of War inside the gaza strip, taken yesterday by palestinian militants. Howard trey, thanks very much. Stay safe. More on israel later in the program. Kevin mccarthy did what was right for the country, avoiding a Government Shutdown, and his reward was being booted from the speakers chair. Media absolutely loving this story not just because its dramatic and unprecedented, this is a first in american history, but because it are recontinues to show the republicans are incapable of governing. Hes out of a job. You dont have is to listen to the Mainstream Media on this. Many republicans who care about the institution are really angry about what matt gaetz and his allies did. They dont get to say theyre conservative because theyre angry and theyre chaotic. They are not conservatives, and they do not have the right to have the title. I dont regreat standing up or regret standing up and choosing government over grievance. It is my responsibility, it is my job. Finish. Howard now, mccarthy made so many concessions no these house rebels, especially allowing any Single Member to oust them him, that he was almost lake a hostage, and he ticked off the democrats to the point they mounted a partyline vote against him. But the larger question that journalists should be exploring is what does this coup do to the institution of the house . We badly need two thriving parties this is this country even if thats less exciting to cover than the current chaos. Im howard kurtz and this is mediabuzz. Howard emotions, needless to say, are running high among the commentators. Im furious. First of all, were without a speaker. This is historic. Something like this hasnt happened in well over a hundred years. And now what weve got is total chaos. The House Republican congress, you have no one to blame but yourselves. You dug the hole. The problem is you dragged the whole country down with you. These parties, we realize, are not mirror images. One wants the win and the other count. They shot themselves in the foot, and by9 foot, i mean head. This is about the far right, but we need a party thats consistently adult in this country. Of its not the Republican Party right now. Howard joining us now to analyze the coverage, in utah, jason chaffetz, former republican congressman and fox news contributor. And in san diego, laura fink, ceo of rebel communications. Jason, as somebody who served on the hill, how much of this, how much has the press is the press enamored of this republican meltdown story, and is it fuel by some gop lawmakers ripping the conservative rebelsesome. Yell rebels . Well, yeah. Theres nothing like interparty fights to get the national medias attention, especially when its on republican on republican rages. Look, i am shipping to the argument as that matt gaetz and the others made, but i thought the process and what they did was fundamentally wrong. I think Kevin Mccarthy made a fundamental mistake when he agreed and acquiesced to the asked that only one person could bring the motion to vacate. I thought that was wrong, and they paid the price for that. I think that number should be higher, like two dozen or so and be able to vacate the chair. And even though some of the arguments like regular order and bringing those bills to the floor one at a time should make sense to both sides of the party, the mess that it creates, the chaos, it just looked like, you know, a ship of fools. Howard chaos is not an overstatement. Laura, a lot of people have been saying why didnt some of the moderate democrats bail out Kevin Mccarthy eby voting present even by voting president . There were a lot of trust issues, and the leadership basically ordered every one of them to vote against mccarthy. We also heard that, in fact, no deal was made and no communication was had between mccarthy and the democrats. So he really wasnt looking to go that route to safe his speakership. Save his speakership. But the reason the media is so enticed by this is because of the level of assistance parent city and access that republicans are give them to the drama. We saw pelosi with a similar 5vote majority, and it certainly wasnt dramafree. But the democratic chose to keep it in the family, and the republicans are going full public with their anger. I think also the agreement on the narrative, you never or very rarely hear fox news hosts agreeing with New York Times editors when they talk about chaos or when greg gutfeld and paul krugman from the New York Times talk about one says shooting themselves in the head, the other one says decapitated. This level of agreement on narrative the is unprecedented as well and why you see the Media Jumping on it. Howard rare amount of consensus here. Jason, mccarthy made missteps, but if you look back to paul ryan, john boehner, wouldnt you conclude the job is Mission Impossible especially if theres a faction that just doesnt want to compromise at all . Oh, theres no doubt in my mind that we should redefine the role of speaker and what we expect that person to do and not do. We got rid of earmarks, i think thats the good thing, but it also got away from the ability of the leadership to entice and bring people to the table to actually vote for bills. I think the argument though going back to regular order and allowing everybody to offer amendments, thats the right thing. And and lets not take this argument too far, because the idea that continuing resolutions and omnibuses are the right way to go, thats the way washington normally works and so we need to continue to do more of that, thats a are hollow argument. Theres a reason why we are 33 trillion in debt, and its because of that garbage and because we have leadership who thinks they have, they and they alone get to craft and bills and pass them. Howard yeah. I think both parties bear responsibility for the staggering debt figures. But, laura, isnt the larger problem that the parties have lost their clout, and the way to start them these days is through social media whether its matt gaetz, mtg or aoc on the democratic side, and so they cant be reined in because their power comes from having a great Instagram Field E . Thats certainly true that the power is shifting, but i think theres a very, a huge difference between whats happening on the republican side and on the democratic side. And you see that in play today, and you see it in play this week because we see the fracas really damaging the internal Electoral Prospects of the Republican Party. Kevin mccarthy was a fund raising machine, and he had a plan to retain the house and also possibly to help with message if on the senate. We see here this Crisis Playing in to joe bidens messaging about extreme republicans unable to govern. And so this was a huge mistake that will have lasting consequences as we proceed, especially if they cant decide on a consensus speaker. Howard jason, let me play for you, to be fair to matt gaetz, an exchange he had with laura ingraham. So lets say republicans lose the house. Will you feel any, any regret for having done what you did today . Absolutely not. I believe that we were destined to lose the house if we didnt do what we did today because with we didnt give anyone something to believe this in. Howard jason, theres a lot of talk, a lot of anger at matt gaetz, even talk of expelling him because his critics feel hes pursuing a personal grudge against Kevin Mccarthy and had no plans for what would happen if mccarthy was toppled. I think the arguments he gave on the floor of the house were actually pretty good arguments. But maines some sort of moral minus some sort of Moral Inhave Cession by the speaker, i think americas left wondering, whey did you just do that now . What in the world is happening . You know, changing the Team Midstream in the middle of a congress is just, its not only unprecedented, i think a lot of people are wondering why they did that. But i think that the argument that if we just keep being as republicans Democrat Light and we just kind of go along to get along and just keep going on with what joe bidens doing with energy and the border and inflation and all those things, then, you know, what good are the republicans if theyre not actually going to change the trajectory of where were going in this nation . Howard right. They should stand for something. But when you only control onethird of the government, its hard to govern without come proprohissing. Laura, whoever the next speaker is jim jordan and Steve Scalise are running wont they run into the same brutal math that mccarthy did . They absolutely with will. And they will run into the same kicking the can down the road with the Government Shutdown in 45 days. To fix that problem ask and more to come, you have to get spending bills through or, you know, voters will hold you accountable in a year. And i think that the leadership and the insiders in the Republican Party, im not sure if Congressman Chaffetz would agree with me, but i do think that the reason they are lacking to rein this in and chien this up as soon as possible is because they know the damage that is done. Voters want to see a functioning government, not chaos with no return. Howard you know, or congressman, politico is reporting today that there is some chatter among House Republicans to try to bring mccarthy back, to retore him to the speakership in part because the house is paralyzed, cant act until theres a new speaker. And now with the war in israel started by hamas, cant approve any aid or do anything else with regard to the situation in the middle east. Yeah. To try to predict what that body is going to do, i mean, look, i used to be part of that body. To herd those cats and try to get them all in the same direction, look, again, i said it at the time and ill say it again, if they dont change the threshold for the motion to vacate, we will go through this on i mean, how often are we going to continue to do this . Yes, they need to rally behind a leader e. And, by the way, youve got some really good with people between Steve Scalise and jim jordan. But jim jordan was to john boehner the way matt gaetz was to Kevin Mccarthy. So the the idea that jim jordan could ascend to the speakership, i mean, a great conservative that would be in that position, i think do fabulous, but a few years ago the idea that he would be speaker, unbelievable. Nobody would have thought that would happen. Howard yes. Things move quickly in politics, and sometimes things unimaginable become imaginable, though its going to be tough for either one of these guys to get to 218. Stick around, well have you back later. On golo, i spent a couple hundred bucks and got back down to my high school weight. Youre not gonna believe this thing is possible but it is. Howard the theres been some Media Chatter9 that the next House Speaker could be donald trump . Joining us now, bob cusack, editor this chief of the hill. Did you ever take that seriousliesome. Not really. And i dont think he can get the votes. Remember, you have 18 House Republicans representing districts that biden won, so they dont want that. Howard people may wonder, how could it be donald trump, but you dont have to be a member of the house to be speaker. One of those oddities of the constitution. Thats right. Howard trump has endorsed jim jordan whose fiery style makes great copy for journalistism journalism, but jordan would need more support from moderates. No, absolutely right. When jordan last ran for the top position among house are republicans howard when was that . Five years ago. That was for minority leader, ring or but this is a different party. I thinkable in normal times Steve Scalise is the favorite, and i still think he is, but i dont think hes the clear favorite like we would have thought maybe years ago. Howard right. But, of course, jordan, im sure some republicans love the fact that hes leading these Oversight Hearings and the impeachment inquiry, but maybe some republicans dont. They dont, absolutely right. And i think there could be a choice c or d. This is going to be a long week. Howard oh. Youre going to complicate my layoff with more candidates . [laughter] so its hard to cover this race because the deal makings all behind closed doors. Im sure some promises are being offered or traded, and if there are no polls to obsess over. Thats right. So this is basically a run for class president. President ial endorsements, especially from trump, mean a lot in a republican primary, but as Kevin Mccarthy said in this type of race, not so much. Howard yeah. Kevin mccarthy never asked donald trump to try to save him despite the fact that he had spent a lot of time cultivating the former president , going to maralago they had a complicated relationship. [laughter] howard fair enough. Unless theres a quick decision, doesnt the chaos in the house increase the chances of a Government Shutdown . Remember, the Stopgap Spending that avoided the had thedown shutdown runs out in about, i dont know, five weeks in. Thats right. Youre going to have another bipartisan compromise, and the speaker is going to have to deal with the senate, run by democrats and, listen, there could be another ouster of the speaker unless they change that one member rule. Howard so you think a new person could be elected speaker and, nevertheless, republicans having been byrne burned, i think, by the ouster of Kevin Mccarthy, that person could be toppled if they cant get a deal . I mean, listen, could it be tried . Yes. But at the same time, you cant go back to that well too often. Howard yeah. I do think the chances of a Government Shutdown are very high. Howard yeah. Who would want this job after all of this . Moving right along, Hillary Clinton has been making the rounds lately, and she actually said this about Donald Trumps followers at some point, you know, maybe there needs to be a formal deprogramming of the cult members. Howard this, of course, is the president ial candidate from 2016 who talked about the bassett of deplorables. Basket of deplorables. What did you make of that comment . Very strange. A lot of democrats said, well, the fever will break. The fever has not broken. [laughter] he is still the party leader. But what does that mean in formally deprogram. Its kind of an odd statement. Howard yeah. And you could kind of tell from her tone it wasnt a joke. And when you Start Talking about cult members, isnt she, in fact, sticking it to many millions of americans when, for whatever combination of reasons, like donald trump . Yeah. Well, listen, it was painful for her to lose to donald trump especially when he thought he was going to win. And by many accounts donald trump thought he was going to lose. Theres some history there, of course. Howard a little bit, sure. And, of course, Many Democrats blaming hillary for losing that election, but on the other hand, we in the press underestimated donald trump. Absolutely. Howard whether that will happen again with his huge lead, i dont know. Learn not to make any predictions. Bob i cusack is, thanks for stopping by. Kid proof your vehicle with American Made products at weathertech. Com. Howard it wasnt far from here, a mile from the u. S. Capitol, when texas congressman Henry Cuellar found himself the victim of a carjacking. There were three individuals. I looked to the left, there was somebody with a gun pointed at me. I looked to the right, there was somebody there. There was a third person behind me. I do have a black belt in karate but i quickly assessed the situation. Howard wise decision. Joining us now the from los angeles, gianno caldwell, fox news political analyst. And, gianno, Henry Cuellar says washington is three times as dangerous as a his laredo, texas, district. I personally know somebody whos been carjacked here, but i somehow it only gets reported if the victim is a prominent person. Unfortunately, thats the reality that weve seen ourselves in not just in washington, d. C. , but across the country. It seems as though many of these places where where democrats, and its unfortunate because with this isnt about a politics, but this happens to be the party who does this from what ive seen of progressive politicians whereas theyre not enforcing the law. Theyre not doing their jobs. Weve got people like kim fox In The City Of Chicago who will let minors just commit crimes and then let em leave the same day. And when you couple that with the fact that theyre legislatively doing vehicles like the safety act which just became law and got implemented where theres no bail, this is wreaking havoc across the country. I think back to just september, the end of september, Fox News Channel put out some data with regards to crime across the country, total overall crime, 33 up in chicago, 29 in philadelphia, 17 up in seattle, 32 in new york. 19 in portland, 14 in houston. Howard right. This is unfortunate, its devastating for the people with who live in these stay cities because theyre screaming out for help and justice, and theyre being ignored. Howard and here in the nations capital, they trieded to lower sentencing this year for carjacking, burglary and other crimes. Over the mayors veto, congress and pride ifen blocked it, but with President Biden blocked it, but with homicides up 38 president this year in d. C 38 , how could lawmakers be so out of town . You know, and heres the point, its coming to folks doorsteps. When i was testifying before Congress Last week, when you walk outside and just talk to people, have conversations, theres not really a person who doesnt know someone who hasnt had a Violent Crime, act against them. Theres multiple Family MembersIn The City Of Chicago who are being murdered. So you talk about one victim of Violent Crime, one family member, but theres people who have lost two, three of their brothers to murder, innocent, not a part of gang life or activity. Like My Baby Brother Christian who was murdered on June 24th Of Last year. You know, were thinking about the speaker fight because i know you were just talking about jim jordan. I had the privilege and honor to work with congressman jim jordan and his committee. Such a compelling person for justice, such a compelling person for families, such a compelling person to root out corruption. And i hope and pray that this is somebody that will be very seriously considered and likely to be speaker, because jim jordan is pushing this baton forward, and hes helping families which is what you want in the speaker of the house. I hope that jim jordan is that guy. Howard i know you and your family were touched personally, as you just said, by this tragedy. Just briefly, shoplifting, its covered but why isnt it a bigger story . Why isnt it a bigger story . Because it doesnt fit the agenda of of the main steam media who wants everybody to believe the economy is absolutely great, theyre not feeling pain and crime isnt an issue, that its a scare tactic from the republicans, and its simply not true. Its massive gaslighting. You can look at places like fox 32 who are covering these Crime Stories every single day, but the Mainstream Media, the national Mainstream Media seem to be so far do disconnected from the realities that a lot of people face, especially poor people. I give you one last fact about chicago. 2. 7 Million People in chicago, 29 percent of that population is black. Last year 80 percent of the murders were black. Were a country and a crime crisis. We need change and we need it right now, howie. Howard well put. And those statistics are very sobering. Gianno caldwell, thank you. Donald trump uses his civil trial as a backdrop to hold News Conferences and battles the judgement over a gag order. Answers, its good to have help. The late are earth mid waste war dominating the news as israel retaliates against gaza after hamas forces bombarded the jewish state. Israelis are in mourning, mourning the hundreds who were killed and looking for their kidnapped babies, grandmothers, sisters, brothers and husbands captured by terrorists. Its being called a 9 11 moment for israel. Everyone was caught off guard in the stunning Intelligence Failure from israel to washington. Howard lets go to Lucas Tomlinson lye at the white house. Live at the white house. President biden coming under a lot of heat from republicans for that Prisoner Swap that unfroze 6 billion in iranian assets. Of course, iran a major backer of hamas. What does the white house say about that . Reporter well, howie, the white house is denying that any, not one cent of the 6 billion that was used, obvious, for that Prisoner Swap to get americans home after they were taken hostage by iran, the Biden Administration says that 6 billion remains in accounts in dhaka tar and theyre tracking that. As you mentioned in qatar republicans saying some of the 6 billion, theyre calling it an appeasement payment. Former Secretary Of State mike pompeo earlier said take away that 6 billion for a second, howie, look at the 230 million the Biden Administration freed up to the give to the palestinians on the first day that biden took office. Howard right. The white house playing defense on that but, to be clear, no money from the 6 billion has been spent. Also the administration worked very hard to broker a peace if deal between israel ask saudi arabia. And saudi arabia. Both sides were sowning on the midwestic. Isnt this war concern optimistic. Isnt this a pretty serious setback to that approach . Reporter theres no question. Senator tom cotton saying iran is behind this war and wants to sever any potential peace agreement. Just a few weeks ago our own bret baier interviewed Mo Ham Bin Salman and later benjamin yet an netanyahu. They said they were close to to a peace deal. One that seems far away right now. Howard yes. Lucas tomlinson at the white house, thanks. It was the strangest thing. As Donald Trumps civil trial opened in manhattan, a Television Camera sudden will hi started showing shaky pictures of the former president walking in, addressing reporters but no sound. It was even the hot of Justice Arthur angorn who mugged for the audience. But to hear what was on the former president s mind, you just had to wait for a break in the proceedings each day. Letitia james is a disgrace to our country and to the state of new york. She should focus on the Violent Crime and the murders here going on. But im here, stuck here, and i cant id rather be right now in iowa. Id rather be in New Hampshire or South Carolina. Howard the judge issued a gag order after trump took to truth social to criticize his law clerk, allison greenfield, falsely mocking her as Chuck Schumers girlfriend and warning of serious consequences if the order was violated. The case against trump and his company sparking vastly different media reaction. Businessmen, dont you dare ever run for president again. If you do, youll get the corporate death penalty. First, they come for your freedom, and then they come for your company. Having cameras, etc. , all benefit donald trump. He is a showman, he wants a show. Howard and were back with the panel, jason chaffetz, whether you think this civil fraud suit should have been brought or not, wasnt it inevitable with trumps attacks on the racist and incompetent Letitia James and the deranged and trump hater judge that he get hit with a gag order in. None of this is inevitable. Look, i mean, its donald trump. Hes running for the presidency of the United States, and he has a First Amendment right to voice his opinion. You dont get to just gag a president ial candidate. You dont get to ago gag an average person who is out there. They can speak in this country. What the democrats are so quick to run to say, oh, weve got to gag you, oh, weve got to shut you down. Whats up with that . When did the liberals start to accept the idea that the First Amendment really wasnt that important . Were will hess than a hundred less than a hundred days from the iowa caucuses. Donald trump has been in business for decades. They bring this suit against him right now . You think thats a coincidence . Most of americas figured out this gig. Howard right. Of course, trump is not completely gagged, hes just gagged against, for example, attacking the judge and his staff. The media are all other this in part because of the attack on the judges law clerk with an allegation that turned out to be false, and critics say he could be putting her or people like her in danger. Absolutely. This is really about the rule of law which i know Congressman Chaffetz knows has limits in the constitution, and its the also about keeping people safe. We saw threats against election officials, people in law enforcement, and ill tell you whats up with that. Its very important to continue to enforce the rule of law, to the make sure that our Public Servants are safe, that that our citizens that are volunteering as grand jurors are safe. And if that involves a very narrow order to not threaten and to make misleading and false statements about the people that are supporting our democracy by serving it with their professionalism and their lives, i think its really that is not a tall order, and thats not a lott to ask, and thats not a gag order. Thats simple Human Decency i and thats protecting the rule of law and the poem who uphold it. People who uphold it. Howard lets give some equal time to the Letitia James. Roll it. What they were were comments that, unfortunately [inaudible] comments that i can describe as racist. The donald trump show is over. Howard so, jason, trump also broadcast his view that there are no victims here. The banks got repaid, the val weation of maralago was ridiculously lo at 18 low at 18 million. What was being argued inside the court in. Again, the president s been in the realities business for a long Real Estate Business for a long time. And he is right. I just think the its a pact that shes one of the worst Attorney Generals theres ever been. Theyre ignoring the crime and all the other things that are going on in the world. This is where the Attorney General spending her time . Youve got to be kidding me. Everything is going wrong in new york. Every metric is upside down. And crime is rampant, and theyre talking about real estate valuations . I dont think the Average American believes that that is worthy of the Attorney Generals time. Howard yeah. And, of course, Letitia James ran on a platform of she was going to get trump, laura. But its not hype with the judge having already ruled there was serious inflation of real estate assets to say this threatens the company that bears his name and his ability to do business in new york state, laura. Well, we cant have rules for thee and not for me. I cant lie on a home loan about my assets and get away with it. These are federal documents. This is the rule of law. And we do not have different recalls for people just because they have money and businesses. And i think that Holding Donald trump accountable is something that americans can relate to because they know that just because youre at the top doesnt mean that you cant perpetrate, you know lets be clear, this wasnt a subtlety or a decimal error. This was orders of magnitude overestimation, inflation of assets. This was a broad and and is well thought out fraud that donald trump was perpetrating. And the judges order was clear. The math is correct. And no matter how many Media Outlets might say, oh, but maralagos worth a billion, when the Palm Beach Assessor says 1827 million and the Trump Organization agrees, a problem there. And its good that hes being held accountable, and Leticia James is brave to do so because we know shes under Death Threats and a lot of pressure. Howard all right. I think the palm beach assessment is totally wrong having been to maralago. Jason, just briefly, or while the media are convinced that trump being tied up in courtrooms will hurt his campaign, but these indictments and lawsuits like this one just make people feel even more hes being persecuted. Theres a lot of truth to that, howie. I totally agree because, you know, people just feel like theyre always going after hum. What because he have, 9 is counts against him 91 counts . Why not make it a round 100 . I think theyre done a pathetic job of explaining to the American People what it is the smoking gun that they think is so wrong here. And that, the vick, like, whos the victim in all of this . Theyre left scratching their head. And so they joust feel like, hey, you know what . Youve made donald trump the martyr, and he should be able to come pain in iowa and New Hampshire and South Carolina campaign along with all the other candidates. Howard well, he was during the breaks there in the proceedings. Jason and and laura, thanks so much for joining us. What makes elon musk tick, and is he the savior or saboteur of twitter . Why would he insult ukraine like that . You know, or he came to ukraines rescue when the satellites that serve the Ukraine Military were all knocked out including the commercial ones and the only ones that would work with tarlink. So he starlink. So he has this hero thing where he goes in and does it, but hes addicted to controversy on twitter. Its been that way for six or seven years, and in some ways i think it badly distracts from the legacy as somebody who brought us into the era of space travel; has built the biggest rocket ever made and is taking us into the era of electric vehicles, and yet hes always doing these weird tweets and postingses. Your right, even his brother and his friends say, hey, hey, put that away. Howard it hasnt worked. That brings us to our report that musk hut down the starlink satellite to prevent an attack, when he disputed that,s he thought it was enabled to that area all the way to crimea, but it was in the. Do you think that mistake hurt you . No, i mean, its essentially the same thing. That night in september when ukraine was launching a sneak attack using starlink on the russian fleet in crimea, it had been geofenced. They thought they could get through. So that night he is being appealed to by the ukrainians, please, allow us to do this attack. And you got one citizen, one, you know, one private citizen who that might gets to make the decision. Howard right. Yes, no. Yes, no. The geofencing had been there already, but he was making the decision that night. And certainly you can see all the Text Messages from that night and later in the book. Howard a common theme in many of the reviews is that you had so much access to musk that maybe you were a bit soft on him. For example, the atlantic describing your a approach, musk is powerless over his own impulls, Cannot9 Control His impulses, cannot control his need to stir thing up when things are going well. That exactly comes from my book. And i do. If you read the narrative this my book, you saying wow, hes impulsive, hes reckless, he blows things up, he cant control himself. And yet part of that, that ability to be impulsive and sometimes take risks which weve learned weve forgotten how to do as a nation sometimes, weve got more referees than risk takers, more regulators than innovators, thats what makes him who he is. I give you stories. Im not trying to be Somebody Preaching at you, but exactly what you just quoted is what what im trying to show in the week through stories instead of waving my arms and saying heres what youve got to think. Howard right. We want to know what musk thinks, but when he gave some credence to this complete b. Suspect about the brutal attack on Nancy Pelosis 82yearold husband, you kind of brush it off by saying his growing tendency to read wacky news sites convey conspiracy theories, but i think what he did was outrageous. Oh, i think it was totally outrageous, and i hope i conveyed it better in the book. Its not just the paul pelosi thing. He amplifies, he retweets, he likes these misinformation sites. And i think even he felt it was outrageous. He deleted it, gave a public apology. The guy sometimes is impulsive, but we shouldnt leapt that be the only let that be the only thing we know about him. And the thing is it so overshadows the things he does which is why he shouldnt be doing it. Howard you write in the next to last page, do the audaciousness and hubris excuse his bad behavior, callousness, recklessness . The answer is, no, of course not. But then you go on to say people have both good and bad traits. You know what . Shakespeare teaches us that a were with molded out of fault. And the question if you had a musk that had a whole lot more impulse control, to what extent would that unravel the fabric that lets him do what he does . But im glad you read that part because, of course, you dont you can try to explain what he does, but you dont excuse it, and you dont say, well, just because he got rockets into space and got us into the era of electric vehicles, that excuses the paul pelosi quote. Thats what i say in the book. By but i also think its useful to know how he brought us to the these. Howard still to come, why journalistses are suddenly furious with elon musk. Because the only thing dripping should be your style. Plop plop fizz fizz with alkaseltzer plus cold flu relief. Also try for fizzy fast cough relief. Howard more now with elon musk biographer walter isaacson. Reuters just concluded that twitter is now worth about 8 billion, less than the debt he owe. Is it time to declare this purchase a failure . Well, were going to see what he does now. Even in the news this week, you saw, i think, 8 Million People live Citizen Journalism on twitter. Its really bad for advertising though because, as we talked in the earlier segment, he sometimes reposts things that make it into a more toxic environment that advertisers dont want to be in. I think what youre going to see is the adding of a lot of features on twitter. And for people like me and, if i may say so, you, howie with, who are a part of the media and we United States to get used to get the anointed blue check, it feels like, no, this is not a great place. But i think hes going to turn it into something he did 20 years ago that became paypal, and he wanted it to be a combination of a payment system, a platform, a Posting System and social media. And youll see him do that with the platform now known as x. Howard but, you know, journalists rah a rah are really angry because musk stripped the headlines away from anything we or others post so that theres an image and maybe some text, but its hard to tell what the article is about. This was about better aesthetics. Why would he do this . I think they may even change their minds on that. He goes back and forth on various things in trying it out. In the end, hes trying to create a platform that opens things up so that people can post manager like anything from substack to wechat where people can post their own things. And, yes, it disintermediates, to use a big word [laughter] the gatekeepers of journalism like you and i and, you know, many of our friends have been. And thats going to cause people to rankle a bit. But i think this democratization of media will have a big upside too. Howard well, i think the appeal of twitter has always been especially for journalistic and political types that, you know, you could get fastbreaking news and provocative opinion there. I think he may be chipping away with that. Ive got about half a minute. Given all the time you spent with elon musk and getting texts in the middle of the night and emails and all of that, was there the ever a point where you said, just leave me alone for a couple days, dude . [laughter] im glad to be back in new orleans and going out to dinner with my wife tonight on a date night because it was an amazingly interesting run, but ill not have given this up for i would not have given this up for anything in the world. As you say, hes controversial, he can drive people insane. But to be able to be there at star base and watch what east doing in the rockets and to be there on the Tesla Assembly shine and show how hes making it so that the u. S. Can have manufacturing again and how hes taking risks, i just wanted to convey that whole story. And its about the most exciting story you can think of happening among, you know, companies today.
