At the end of the day we should have finished our work and right now there is no ability to do anything on the house floor. We sent out a schedule to get all our work done by the end of october. That schedule is now going to get tossed out the window. So what happened with kevin is something i did not want to see happen. But our job right now as a Republican Party in the house is to come together, figure out who the next leader will be and we have to get back to work. The American People need us to function. Bill you took six weeks off and went on august break. Who is to say if you stayed in washington you would have made Progress Given the rub that weve watched over the last two days . The criticism is fair. There were many members like myself who said we need to stay and figure out this stuff with the Appropriation Bills before anybody goes anywhere. At a minimum we have to make sure we have a steady working schedule through the august recess. That did not occur. One of the things that was happening even before the august recess is that there was an impasse on how much we wanted to spend. Members were communicating that to the Leadership Team and it really just didnt get anywhere fast. So it is frankly a failure on all sides at this point in time. Kevin mccarthy was the leader of the house and there were enough members to safe we want to see a change and thats where we are right now. Bill a couple of things maybe the audience doesnt recall. You said last night you said every member has a voice. Which is a great thing to say. You have a fourvote majority easier said than done. A different way to run the house. What Speaker Pelosi did in 2019 is she changed that rule. She said you have to have a majority of the caucus to vacate the chair to have a vote to remove the speaker. And Speaker Mccarthy negotiated in good faith with people like matt gaetz to change it back to one member of the caucus. But when you are facing a fourvote majority, you are always on tinder hooks, are you not . You are. But you have to understand something. Every member of congress is sent here by the people. Not a Leadership Team or a group somewhere on capitol hill. People back home send them. I didnt want to see this. I didnt want to see us be gridlocked and deadlocked until we can find a new leader. But i do believe that every member of congress should have the ability to represent the interests of their districts and the one vote motion to vacate is part of that as distasteful as it may look, as much as people dont want to see this current situation, that provision in house rules has been there for a very long time. Just because nancy pelosi changed it, doesnt make it right. Bill you respect what matt gaetz did then, is that right . No, i disagreed with it and told matt that. I dont agree with this. We shouldnt be doing this but focused on funding the government, working through appropriations bill and securing the nations border. Thats what we should be focused on. I think for all my republican colleagues where we go next, security of our southern border is of utmost paramount and get back to work as quickly as we can to figure out how to fund the government. The days of top down leadership in washington i believe those days are over. She has already identified a lot of different solutions, including a youth curfew that jessicas point. 2 3 of the carjackings are youth under 18. There is a huge issue when it comes to teenagers. Henry cuellar talked about the fact he thinks the people that carjacked him were under the age of 18, were young. This is really a serious situation and we need to shine a light on the spike in youth crime and hopefully the new police chief will do that. It is a policing issue. I am against defunding the police. I was happy to see the president say that in his stat of the union. Were down 500 officers in d. C. The lowest point in 50 years. It will take some time to recruit and train these folks. We have a crisis right now and we have to look to the future, too. Bill when you have a mayor right now one time allowed the blm sign on that main street that runs to the white house. At one time defund the police was on there as well. I understand since that time it has been removed. The former chief of police said we need to keep violent people in jail. Thats a direct shot at the d. A. We hear that about philly and about new york and chicago and los angeles. It is the same thing. San francisco. Portland. Here is the mayor of washington, d. C. Bowser about a week ago. We need more officers. We dont have the officers we need and sadly we lost 300 to 400 officers in the last four years. We havent had officers in our schools. And we have policies that make it difficult to create recruit new officers. So yes, we need officers. Bill has she talked like that before . This is a complete sea change but it is coming on the backs of people being killed. Their cars being hijacked and homes not being safe. I want to go back to the earlier point. The Democratic Party went from soft on crime to defund the police to ignore crime. That rhetoric has real life implications. So this these conversations, they have a real life impact. I think this is a little too late. What we need to see is prosecutors prosecuting the law. Return to safety.
