Id ask that following his remarks you hold any questions until the end of our briefing and we will be happy to take questions at that time. I want to make sure that the victims know that were consciously thinking of what theyre going through and give out the fact that they are in our thoughts and prayers to bring mr. Cavalcante to justice. So good afternoon. Im howard holland, the Acting Warden of the Chester County prison. Im here today to provide preliminary details of the escape odanilo cavalcante. Let me begin by addressing the escape. Martha Mitch Mcconnell taking a few questions. Were keeping an eye on both of those. Lets listen in. What it might have been . Do you know what it is . The doctors have said is the medical reasons for the two freezeups . What the doctors reported a dressed is concern that people might have of some things that happened to me, did happen. They didnt. Really, i have nothing to add to that. I think you covered the subject. What do you say to those that want you to step down . Do you have any plans to retire soon . I have no announcements to make on that subject. Im going to finish my term as leader and finish my senate term. Thank you. Martha okay. Interesting comments from Mitch Mcconnell. This is the first time that he has answered questions about the two times that he appeared to freeze mid sentence while speaking in his capacity as the Senate Minority leader. Both of them were disturbing to everybody that was watching wondering what was going on, what the medical condition is behind it. The doctor has issued a statement saying that he does not have strokes, did not have parkinsons disease and he was clear to return to work. This is the first time that senator mcconnell has confronted questions from reporters on this issue. He did not give us a whole lot of new information. He basically said the doctors Statement Stands and i believe he said all that needs to be said on my health, on his health essentially. He also said that he was asked, do you have any announcements whether or not you will step down or complete your term. He said he planned to finish his term as leader and senator. That is the word the senator from kentucky, Mitch Mcconnell, first time hes addressed these difficult instances of freezing up for 30, 40 seconds at a time that have gotten a lot of attention in terms of his overall health. Well keep a close eye on that as we continue to get more information on it. Meantime, there is a News Conference going on right now that we want to take you back to in pennsylvania where theyre giving us an update on the hunt for this escaped murderer that stabbed to death his former girlfriend in front of her children 37 times. Now hes on the run and everyone in suburban philadelphia is very nervous about where he will show up. Watch this. In the escape of cavalcante, the tower officer did not observe or report the escape. The escape was discovered as part of the inmate accounts as he came in from the exercise yard. There will be a thorough investigation in to the escape, which includes this element of incident. This is welcome. The action of the tower officer present is a key part of the investigation and well take appropriate action against personnel based on the results of the investigation. Heres the timeline of the events. At 8 333 a. M. Cavalcantes block entered the escape yard. He pushed his way through a razor wire, scaled a fence and pushed his way through more razor wire. At 9 33 a. M. , his group returned from the block. He was noticed missing and they conducted a special count. At 9 48 a. M. , officers informed Central Control that cavalcante was not there. There was a belief that he may have been in a visiting room, which was checked with negative results. At 9 50 a. M. , the prison was locked down. By 10 01, the public escape siren had been sounded and 911 had been notified. As we do, we will review all of our practices, policies and procedures and make improvements as appropriate. Were Formulating Plans to enhance security to fully enclosing all outside yards, adjusting cameras and additional Security Assets that will enhance overall security of the prison. As i close, i would like to thank my local, federal, state and Law Enforcement representatives that quickly responded to the scene once the escape was there. They have been working to take mr. Cavalcante back in to custody and were appreciative of their efforts. At this time due to the nature of the investigations, i can not comment on any individual investigation including the internal investigations. With that, ill turn it back over to the colonel. Thank you, warden. Ill go on with my update and come back to questions momentarily. Last evening, we had another sighting of cavalcante by a resident in the area of chandler road, pensbury township. He was unable to be located. Some of the challenges, in spite of precautions, one of our tactical search dogs suffered heatrelated emergency an remains hospitalized today. Were hopeful he will make a full recovery. As a result of that reported sighting, residents observed a significant increase in police activi activity. We had a reverse 911 message sent out to inform residents of the issue. Additionally as a result, we slightly expanded the eastern edge of our perimeter to include creek road. The District Attorney and i have continue a regular dialogue with School Districts updating them with changes in our operations that might impact schools. As this operation unfolded late last night, the unionville chadsford School Districts made a decision to close schools. We use state, federal Law Enforcement, k9s and various technology in efforts to keep the Community Safe and to bring this to as Swift A Conclusion as possible. We continue to increase the number of personnel assigned as conditions dictate. Residents can expect to continue to see large numbers of Law Enforcement officers in their community and traveling to and from assigned locations. We continue to ask for the publics help by familiarizing themselves with a photograph and description of cavalcante to check Security Cameras that they have and call us immediately if they believe they may have seen cavalcante. Again, we ask residents to please secure ho outbuildings and vehicles. Cavalcante has obtained some clothing and other unknown supplies and we want to minimize any opportunity to obtain anything more. Its important that we keep pressure on him as we continue the hunt. I am also announcing the Pennsylvania Crimestoppers has offered 10,000 for information leading to the capture of cavalcante, this brings the reward total to 20,000. Anyone with information have asked to call our tipline at 7175622987. Lastly, i want to recognize and thank the community for all of their support during this trying time in their lives. I and all of us working this man hunt understand the tremendous stress this puts on families and businesses. In spite of that stress, we have had individuals, businesses and im sorry. Scouting, church and other organizations show up at our command post with cases of water, food and wellwishes for all of our people. Theyre very kind and i cant thank them enough for their support. Now well be happy to take any questions you may have. Do you believe he has more ability to hide from you than you thought since its seven days now . I dont think he has more ability than we gave him credit for. Its a very challenging area. Weve had a number of these searches in the past. Some take hours, some take days, some take weeks, some take months. Were committed to the search and well find him, bring him back in to the criminal justice system. You guys had access to this video. You saw this. Why did it take so long to alert the public of how he escaped . For the warden . The Acting Warden. I can address that. That matter was referred to the Attorney Generals Office immediately. Were engaged in a thorough investigation. As i started before, our main focus is bringing this man in to custody. Were putting all of our efforts to locate him. Theres a simultaneous investigation in to the prison escape. Today was the day that we believe we needed to bring in the Acting Warden to address the public about how he escaped. The attorney generals investigation [question inaudible] thats correct. [question inaudible] obviously someone didnt do their job. So as i said earlier, according to the document, we had a Consulting Firm come out, identify how the individual escaped and we thought we took appropriate measures to prevent that with the razor wire. We didnt take into account the human element. We focused on the human structure. Was there no one in the tower . Is that why you didnt get the call . Someone was in the tower at the time. Did the person in the tower see him live . The positions of the tower are for observation posts. The state police, local Law Enforcement and marshalls that you have multiple channels. Last night i witnessed there. There was activity. The officer didnt hear anything. They asked the trooper what was going on. They said they were on a different channel and he was left in the dark. Theres 12 officers that have told me that theyre not able to communicate in concert with these guys. Are there multiple channels that youre operating out of . Id have to look into that concern. Ill be happy to do that. We have spent a lot of time and effort making sure that we have solid communications. We have a lot of agencies working there. Most have representation martha were keeping a close eye on this. The state Police Representatives talking about this really intense man hunt. We just saw some incredible video, i would say, which well show you in just a moment. I want to bring in callahan walsh, his father is john walsh. The two co hosts on discovery. They know about this work. Callahan, great to have you with us today. Thanks for having me. Martha i want to take this video on the screen. This shows his escape. Hes on the left hand side there. Hes does a crab walk in between two walls. The other guys on the righthand side, possibly maybe covering him or keeping an eye out for him. He crab walks up between the two buildings. Then were told he ran across the roof. Its remarkable. You can see this other guy on the right. He then went across the roof of the building. Went down, over to the fence, climbed through the razor wire and got out of this prison. What do you think about this, callahan . What is your takeaway here . I think that Detention Facility let the public down. They have a responsibility to keep these inmates locked up. Law enforcement does a great job of capturing these fugitives, these criminals. Their responsibility is to make sure that they dont get back out on the streets. Theyre dangerous once they do. There was another inmate that escaped in may the same way. To see this happen months later, someone dropped the ball. They have the public and the community has every right to be upset with that Detention Facility. Not only will this cost taxpayers a lot of money in this search but puts them at risk as well. Martha i mean, so someone else did the exact same thing with like a crab walk in between these two walls . Thats my understanding. The same exercise yard, the same type of escape that this facility then brought in another company to try a Third Party Company to try to shore up any issues that they might have had. Obviously that didnt work. Martha its incredible. You think somebody would be fire at this point for letting down the folks that depend on that security from the prison. Hes a fugitive now. Hes been out there seven days. They now expanded the perimeter. What do you make of the effort to bring him in . You know, my hats off to Law Enforcement and the u. S. Marshals doing everything that they can. The terrain is difficult. I cant remember an escaped fugitive that has been seen so many times but not been caught. Its a matter of time. And the public, while Law Enforcement and marshalls are doing incredible work and they have extended the perimeter to where the sightings were, the public will likely be the way this guy is caught. I urge everybody to keep your eyes open. If you see anything, say something. Oftentimes we see people have tips that they think are insignificant. Its the tip that breaks the case wide open. I implore anybody that might know something to call Law Enforcement and make sure hes taken off the streets. Martha you think hes likely to stay in that area from your experience or is he going to try to hop a train, do whatever he can to get far away . Well, the best thing for him to do to keep out of Law Enforcements hands is to try to get as much distance from that area as possible. Hes going to try to use any means necessary. However, theres a white hotspot light on this case. So hes probably trying to stay low, trying to travel in the cover of darkness, trying to stay in a low profile. So, you know, it will take time for him to get some distance away. Its been seven days. He could be far at this point now. Martha thanks, callahan walsh. Great to have you with us today. When you look at those numbers, you see how Many Americans are willing to do that, what do you think about your argument . No, i dont think its about the argument. Its about the fact that some people dont find the indictments valid. They think politics has infected everything. If you look at the way hunter biden was treated versus the way donald trump, i can understand why. Thats why they say i dont want to normalize indictments. I dont want to normalize the conduct. Whether or not you believe he should have been charged, do we believe we should have someone in the white house that takes classified documents and hides them from the government for 18 months defying a grand jury subpoena . Do we think as he watched people commit violent acts on the capitol and does nothing . That conduct shouldnt be normalized. We can argue back and forth. Ive said on your show before, i dont think the new york indictment or the atlanta indictment should have been brought against him. The two federal indictments i believe should have. We can have different opinions on that but i dont think we should have different opinions on conduct. That argument is getting attention from joe behar. She said youre a gift when said Something Like a champion to the left and 12 of democrats say that you won the debate the other night. So when you look at the latest polling, which has you 2 in this latest cnn poll, is there an argument for you to take your candidacy to a moderate, to an independent group of voters . Well, ill will when im the republican nominee. Ill take to it moderate independent voters that we have to win to win the presidency. Donald trump cant win those voters. Hes not going to win moderate subject republican women. When i got reelected in new jersey, the female candidate, i won 58 of the female vote. I won 70 of the independents. As far as the cnn poll, i wish all of you, fox, cnn, Wall Street Journal, everybody would stop doing national polls. We dont have a national martha i think thats fair. When you look at iowa, which is a few months away now, New Hampshire, you know, youre not doing that well in New Hampshire. Nikki haley has moved ahead in 1 poll in New Hampshire. I know you think New Hampshire is where you can win. What is your argument this fall . Labor day is behind us. How can you convince people . They say show me what im going to get if i vote for chris christie. Youre going to get somebody that will bring spending under control under like joe biden and donald trump. Youre getting somebody that will actually build the wall. A former prosecutor that will get crime under control. Ill make the attorney general make u. S. Attorney general prosecute crime in our cities to clean cities like the one were in right now with a liberal prosecutor of chicago, san francisco, los angeles. Were going to clean those cities up if im president and youll have someone that will take on the tough and difficult other issues like entitlements, like our tax code. We should extend the tax cuts that put in place. Thats the kind of person youll get. More than that, youll get a republican president. Im the only person on stage that has beaten a democratic incumbent. I beat a democratic incumbent in a blue state. Beating joe biden wont be easy. The last democratic incumbent that was defeated was defeated by a republican governor from a blue state. Ronald reagan from california. I can do the same thing. I have proven it. In New Hampshire, im at 14 . In second place. Im not worried about New Hampshire. Martha theres another debate in a couple weeks. What is your strategy . Theres better moderators. What is your strategy on the 27th . The same thing before. Listen to the questions and answer them. If someone says something that i think is outrageous or insulting to respond to it. What i hope happens, too, is that my other members of the stage follow the rules. I think particularly Governor Pence and vivek blew through the rules. You rang the bell i dont know how many times. First to Breaking News on former President Trumps charges of Election Fraud in georgia. Bryan llenas is watching the Court Proceedings there. Hi, bryan. Fulton county prosecutors made the decision to try all 19 defendants at the same time on october 23. They estimated the trial would last at least four months, not including Jury Selection and involve 150 witnesses. A timeline the judge has not decided on yet, but he was very skeptical about it. Listen. If compress our time line to 40 days and to weigh through those and think through the issues, its unrealistic to think we can handle all 19 in 40 something days. Thats my initial reaction. Two of the 19 codefendants were granted their right to a speedy trial under georgia law. Judge scott mcafee said their cases will be suffered from the 17 others and will be tried together. The judge denied their motion to have the cases tried separately. The d. A. Was not in court today. Martha great. Thanks very much, bryan llenas. So the push to disqualify former President Trump from running for a second term is now heading to court. A liberal group filing a lawsuit to keep him off of the ballot in colorado because of the 14th Amendment constitution. That amendment says no person shall hold any office that had previously taken an oath to support the constitution of the United States while engaged in rebellion against the same or giving aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. The Trumps Campaign spokesperson told fox news digital said this is nothing more than a blatant attempt by enemies of america to use law fare to deprive voters of choosing their next president. Martha this is an interesting battle that could many decisions in to the realm of the courts. Brad raffensperger is on the same page on this. He said invoking the 14th Amendment is the newest way to Short Circuit the ballot box. He goes on to say more about that. Tell me what your reporting is revealing to you. I have spoke with former President Trump multiple times after all of these indictments in all of these different jurisdictions. What he continues to say as all of these indictments against him are election interference, not election 2020, which hes being accused and charged with in georgia and jack smiths investigation but interference in the 2024 election. If you take a look at the calendar, the January 6th Trial out of special counsel jack smiths case, that trial is scheduled to begin the day before super tuesday. These are critical primary races for trump where he cant be out campaigning. He will be in a courtroom. He said today he would take the stand and testify in his own defense. The Trump Campaign likely will campaign off of all of these arguments, all of these indictments, which weve seen, we see in the polls he hasnt dipped with each and every one of these indictments. He continues to hold a steady lead over the entire field. Martha its fascinating. Its what makes covering this story so interesting because its so unprecedented. The way it has fueled his poll numbers is interesting. It was interesting, governor christie was here. He said people are looking at this and feeling like they dont trustsystem. What is the former president s strategy in terms of how it all stacks up . Were looking at the calendar. Is he saying i will testify in the jury box one way or in Court One Day and then that night im going to be at a rally . This is completely unprecedented and the use of the 14th Amendment, section 3. Theres no standing legal press tent to use this. Were entering unchartered territory here. We can expect to see trump and his Campaign Fire up their base of voters and say the Justin System is being weaponized and the people against trump, trump opponents and democrats will stop at absolutely nothing to prevent him from appearing on the ballot. Martha it seems to be backfiring. Theyre getting everything they wanted and fuelling him. This is the latest Wall Street Journal poll. 4646, trump biden. A year ago, it was 4450 favoring president biden. So i guess my question, you just said that hes welling to take the stand. Can you tell me more about that . Trump said he looks forward to taking the stand. I dont know which trial he would take the stand, if its in all of them or just one. He says he looks forward to defending himself because its all fake like the russian probe and Everything Else hes dealt with since he came down to escalator. This is another huge story that is changing dramatically. Alec murdaughs defense team demanding now a new trial for the convicted Double Murder citing sworn testimony from jurors that a Court Official told them not to be fooled or not to believe murdaugh. That they could reach a verdict quickly in this case. That Court Official, rebecca hill, is featured in the new fox Nation Special that i narrated and i did the interview with bustermer day, the fall of the house of murdaugh. Watch this. Im the one that read the verdict of alec murder day. My breath was knocked out for a moment. I have to tell myself to treat this like any other trial, any other verdict that i have to read and place any mind there and think about any other personal relationships. Martha, Alec Murdaugh is not only asking for a new trial but an investigation into allegations of jury tampering. His attorneys want it conducted by the federal government, not sled. Take a listen. We requested sled to stand down on any investigation of these allegations since theyre heavily invested in maintaining alexs conviction. Martha murdaughs lawyers submitted several affidavits from jurors saying that the clerk of court, rebecca hill, instructed them not to be fooled by evidence presented by the defense and push them for a speedy verdict. The defense team sense jurors were reluctant to speak about it until they learned that hill was writing about the trial. Hill has yet to comment. Her coauthor said there was no advance book deal and the two of them selfpublished. We selfpublished behind the doors of justice. We spent 30,000 of our own money. So, you know, theres no big check coming in for an advance to see one outcome or the other. Gordon says becky hill is a woman of faith that routinely prays with her staff. During the trial, she noticed that jurors were praying with each other. He asked her whether she would ever pray with the jury. She said no, because it would create a potential conflict of interest. Martha . Martha thank you very much, jonathan. With that, we bring in jim griffin, an attorney for Alec Murdaugh. Give to have you with us. Good afternoon. Good to be here. Martha thank you. It was one of the things that you said yesterday when you came forward with your partner in this effort defending alec mur murdaugh, you said you heard rumbling about becky hill talk to jurors. When did you hear that in this Court Process . Martha, it was very soon after the jury rendered the verdict after 3 1 2 hours. We were all somewhat stunned. Im not we were advised that we might be wellserved to investigate it. We did. We started out pretty quickly. You know, no doors would open for us. There was this silence around the jury. We reached out. We did not get any response. Then things change. I do think her publishing a book was the impetus for a number of jurors coming forward that did not like the things that she did during the course of the trial. Martha heres a bit of a montage from The Fox Nation Documentary of the things that rebecca hill said during this process. Watch. The murdaughs could definitely set the laws, make the laws and bend the laws. You dont want to be on the wrong side of them. I think the murdaugh family that is left will do everything that they can do to bring back a fondness for the name that isnt tarnished forever. I do believe so. Martha were you surprised by the things that she said . Her capacity as court clerk . Im not really surprised about the things that she said open the documentary that you narrated, martha. What the jurors said about her conduct is absolutely shocking. Its shocking. I soak with alec today. He is hes very angry, extremely angry and hes thankful for everything that we continue to do on his behalf. You know, he thought that becky hill was a friend of his. He has known her while he was practicing law. These revelations that the jury had sworn to, the jurors, completely called him off guard and frankly caught us off guard. Martha so part of that, the jurors that signed this affidavit saying that she was influencing them in a variety of ways and theres also specific things from the book, which are sort of raise a lot of questions as well. But she told judge newman that sled, the Law Enforcement arm, had gone to the house of this jurors exhusband and verified that he had spoken to her and then he posted something about her knowing how she was going to rule in this, which led to her being taken off of the jury. Did rebecca hill tell judge newman that specifically . Martha, its different than that. Rebecca hill told the jurors that sled went out to visit her exhusband and that the exhusband confirmed that he had written this Facebook Post. None of that was true. None of it was true. We talked to the exhusband. He had not been interviewed by sled. She just i mean, it did not happen. Martha so its a absolutely wild story. What im getting at, jim. So when a juror is removed, judge newman had to have understood the reason for removing that juror, correct . What was his understanding about why this juror had to be removed . The information presented to judge newman was two fold. Primarily it was that her exhusband had posted a Facebook Post saying that she, this juror, was drinking with him and told him that she was going to acquit Alec Murdaugh. That was not true. Theres no such Facebook Posts to say that. When mrs. Hill was asked to produce the Facebook Post, she said it had been deleted and found an apology post posted by someones his name, but the apology post predated number she said on facebook. Martha im running out of time. Were going to do a podcast after this. Well get into it more. You were very careful, both of you, to not put any blame on judge newman in his handling of, this doesnt it surprise you that he didnt ask for more proof that this had happened before he allowed that juror to be taken off the case . Yeah, we certainly dont think judge newman was aware of mrs. Hills activities. We dont think that in any form or fashion. We had i think maybe three days of Incamera Hearings during the course of the trial dealing with these issues. Ultimately judge newman felt like the jury was being whipsawed and it was best to remove her.
