Mission, texas. Whats the story where you are there now . John, good afternoon to you. Our viewers might remember the day before title 42 ended back in may, dhs Secretary Mayorkas held a Press Conference at the white house where he promised there would be stiffer consequences for anybody caught crossing the border illegally after the end of title 42. What he had to say back then. I want to be very clear. Our borders are not open. People who cross our border unlawfully and without a legal basis to remain will be promptly processed and removed. Will be promptly removed, he said at the time. Well, that is not reality what we are seeing on the ground here in the Rio Grande Valley, we see mass releases of migrants taking place from the federal government. Our Team Shooting this video, Catholic Charities of Rio Grande Valley here in the mcallen area, we watched bus load of bus load dropped off, mostly family units, once they get to the charity they will be helped with travel, and dates in the future, and they are not hoping to be released, they are expecting to be released. They have little to no fear of deportation and that is why they seek Border Patrol out and turn themselves into agents out in the field. In the mission area, tracking a Human Smuggler bringing migrants through the brush after they crossed illegally. Texas dps arresting them quickly. The smuggler, 26yearold Mexican National facing Felony Charges, and the drone in the eagle pass area, more trying to cross illegally despite the for for fortify, and sometimes between 700 and and 900. And Border Patrol has sent elite four Star Search And Rescue teams over to maui to help out with the ongoing Recovery Efforts there. Interesting to point out that Border Patrol resources are in hawaii right now trying to help out with the ongoing tragedy there. Back to you. The president just about set to speak on maui as well, so we are watching that closely for you. Thank you. Gillian a live look at milwaukee, wisconsin, where the president just began speaking. We are told he is going to address the Deadly Wildfires in hawaii off the top. Well take you there as soon as he starts to do so. In the interim, press secretary Karine Jeanpierre continues to defer questions about the Hunter Biden Investigation except to claim the president views the investigation as a private family matter. Jacqui heinrich joins us from the north lawn of the white house. Jacqui, does the team at all appear concerned about the probe ramping up as the president s seeking reelection . Well, gillian, one point to note, yesterday the press secretary was asked if the president is frustrated his sons plea deal is falling apart and that hunter biden would be facing a criminal indictment just as his father is heading into election season. And interestingly enough, Karine Jeanpierre in her answer responded to allegations about President Bidens involvement in all of this. If you think about what republicans in congress have tried to do for years, right, making claims of, and allegations, right, about the president on this front, over and over again and whats the result of that if you ask yourself what we have seen from that, they keep turning up documents and witnesses showing the president wasnt involved, never discussed these Business Dealings and did nothing wrong. Karine also reiterated the president has not been in business with his son and doj has not interfered, but that david weiss is criticized over the socalled Sweetheart Deal engineered for hunter, and bidens orbit, his sons Attorney Suggested Weiss has succumbed to political pressure to take the probe further, she did not want to weigh in on the handling of this case. Gillian jacqui, over to the president , addressing the wildfires in hawaii. Deadliest wildfire in more than 100 years. A whole city destroyed. Generations of native hawaiian history turned into ruin. I have spoken with governor josh green multiple times and reassured him the state will have everything it needs from the federal government. I immediately approved the expedited declaration, whatever you need, you will get, and will get aid into the hands of people who need it, lost their homes and loved ones, and damaged and destroyed. All the area they have to plow up, they cant do it, dont know how many bodies are there. Imagine being a mom or dad wondering where your child is, or mother or father, its tough stuff. Almost 500 federal personnel deployed to maui to help the communities and survivors get back on their feet. Fema, search and rescue teams are sifting through the ashes and the fivemile area you have seen on television. Its painstaking work, it takes time, its nerve wracking. Most of the debris cant be removed until its done. My wife jill and i will be travelling there, i dont want to get in the way, ive been to too many Disaster Areas, but i want to make sure they have everything they need. Fema administrator, the best we have had, i think, was on the ground this weekend, i talked to her, shes back in the states. I directed her to streamline the process as quickly as possible. To help register survivors, and to date fema has approved 50,000 meals, 75 water, 5,000 beds, 10,000 blankets and other supplies. And one time payments of 700 per household to do the immediate things, taking care of medication and prescription they so badly need. We are working with the state to make sure survivors who have lost their homes have a place to call home until we can rebuild. We are also surging federal personnel to the state, to help the brave firefighters and First Responders, many of whom lost their own homes, their properties, while they are out busting their neck to save other people. They are still working around the clock to put the fires out, evacuate survivors to safety and find the missing. Ive ordered to assist, coast guard, Navy Third Fleet and the u. S. Army. And the immediate aftermath the coast guard and navy support maritime searches and rescue operations. Army helicopters help Fire Suppression and efforts on the big island because there is still some burning on the big island, not the one where you see on television all the time. Fema has deployed more than 140 urban search and rescue personnel as well. And so Many Organizations to thank, like the american red cross, cell phone providers, making sure First Responders can make and respond calls, commercial airlines have Evacuated Tens Of Thousands from the island. List goes on. And the Small Business administration has dozens of staff on the island and begun making low interest federal disaster loans available to businesses, homeowners and renters to help them rebuild, to get by for the immediate and near term. And coordinate, continue to coordinate relentlessly for the people on the ground and make sure the critical work continues. In the meantime, use the phrase, ive been to so many disasters, its almost hollow, our thoughts and prayers for the people of hawaii, not just our prayers, every asset, every asset they need will be there for them, well be on maui as long as it takes, as long as it takes, i mean that sincerely, well have more to report on this. But today i have come to milwaukee to talk about what we are going to do to bring manufacturing back home. The progress, the economy, not the top down gillian we have been listening to President Biden giving remarks in milwaukee, wisconsin, one year of the Inflation Reduction Act anniversary but opened, john, with remarks about maui, about the wildfires he just reiterated a commitment he made this morning to be there as long as it takes, to help the residents build back their lives. John and saying he and the first lady will visit maui as soon as is practical, but he says there is so much work to do in terms of trying to find the missing and where the bodies are before they can even begin to think about the cleanup. So, a long road ahead for a beautiful part of the country. All right, moving on, a Georgia Grand Jury indicted former President Trump on 13 new Criminal Charges stemming from the States Election interference investigation. The latest indictment brings a total of 91 charges across four criminal cases now aimed at the former president. That means trump is facing a Campaign Season unlike any other in american history, several trial dates Overlapping Key events. Jason chaffetz, so, Andy Mccarthy took a look at the latest charges, 41 in total, 18 people named, compared to the other cases facing the former president , jason had said by his legal Estimation This Georgia Case is potentially the most perilous for the former president. What do you think . It is, because there is no president ial pardon, there is no ability to do anything other than incarceration if you are there, and the governor cant get you out of hot water either. They cant go out and bail you out or and do that, and so it is fairly perilous for the president. But look at the charges, at one point you almost have to laugh. 91 charges, i mean, lets make it a round 100. I mean, at some point it becomes static and noise out there. Its pretty hard to take this prosecutor in georgia seriously when one of the coconspirators is kanye wests former communications person, like a publicist for kanye west was colluding with the president , thats what this has come down to . And then compare and contrast Stacey Abrams. I mean, you want to talk about an Election Denier . She said everything that happened in georgia was a fraud and farce and brian kemp is not the legitimate governor of georgia, how come there arent charges against her. Seems they are picking on the guy and doing so selectively. No balance in the administration of justice. John one of the false statements she cites is the president post election saying i won the election. He was not saying that to the fbi during the interview or anything like that, im not quite sure how you make the case that that is a false statement. Whether or not it was true is one thing, but actually say legally its a false statement, im not sure how she makes that case. The president has a schedule facing him unlike any other that ive ever seen in a president ial campaign. Put up on the screen what hes facing in the next six months or so. Letitia james New York State business fraud case, supposed to take place in october 2nd, jack smith january 6th prosecution, scheduled for january of next year, just before the iowa caucuses, right after super tuesday, you have the alvin bragg and Stormy Daniels case, march of 2024, jack smith documents case for may of 2024, just as primary season typically is wrapping up, and georgia case, we dont even know when that is going to happen. Youve been through primary seasons as a surrogate, ive covered them as a correspondent. The candidates dont have a minute to even breathe just getting to and from the political events. How do you throw this on top of that and have former President Trump campaign to the degree he might need to in order to fend off any challenge . Well, certainly it is time consuming, but also very expensive and you know, there are some people would look at that and say thats the whole point. Election was in 2020. You telling me they waited two and a half years to get after three years just happens to coincide in the middle of the election . Why werent these charges brought a long time ago. What information did they garner in the last year they could not have gotten in the first year on all of these cases and just makes you wonder if he wasnt the leader of the republican, in all the polling, if he wasnt making head roads would they actually going after the guy the way they did. I still go back to the Washington Post article that appeared on the literally the day that donald trump was inaugurated saying the impeachment proceedings have essentially begun. And i think thats been the attitude of the democrats. John and if he wins again, im sure theyll likely begin on january 20, 2025. You know, all of this doesnt seem to be having any kind of effect on his popularity with republican voters. My family feud moment, the survey says rcp average for the gop nomination, former President Trump still way out in front with 54. 5 . Even if he is jailed, lets say he loses the case, jailed on Felony Charges he can still run for president. If he becomes president he could pardon himself on the federal charges. The state charges, if hes incarcerated might be more problematic. The case could be made its more important to have him act as Commander In Chief than to keep him in jail. We are beyond precedent here, jason. Yeah, but this is where it get to the theater of the absurd. It just becomes almost a farce to suggest what the democrats are doing here in so many of these charges. I think at the heart of the problem, its not going to move republicans, its not going to move democrats, they have already kind of locked in their thoughts and feelings here. I think for the average Middle Of The Road voter out there they look at this, they hear a lot of static, noise, but dont see the equal application of justice. Hillary clinton was one of the biggest Election Deniers, she said donald trump wasnt a legitimate president , said the election was fraudulent, and now shes just snickering over there saying oh, well, they are just administering justice on trump. If you cant criticize an election and exercise your First Amendment rights, how come Hillary Clinton and Stacey Abrams and other democrats get away with it. John we have a lot to chew over between now and november of next year. Thank you for joining us. Gillian President Biden is still speaking in swing state of wisconsin. He says bidenomics is for the heartland. John do americans feel the same as the president or a different opinion . Iowa senator joni ernst is at the Iowa State Fair. She joining us with what iowans have to say. I think economy is important, job security. Farming, making sure they can have their family farms and be a farming community, people can still have that, that is a big concern. Veteran homeowners, Credit Card Debt piling up . Great news. I am really concerned about my retirement and how the economy will be in the future. Food prices somewhat, but i can see it more in vehicles and things like that. I need to pay my bills and its all harder and harder and harder. Gillian iowans are talking to gop president ial candidates at the state fair. Top of mind for a whole lot of folks is the soaring price of food and housing. Making their pitches direct to voters. Our next guest has been showing all the candidates around, and had a chance to catch up with one of them today. Tim scott, so lets bring in Iowa Republican senator joni ernst. Thanks for being with us today. Talk to us about your time with senator scott, how is he doing, how are all the candidates doing for that matter . Yes, you know, wonderful, and thank you for having me. It has been a wonderful time at the Iowa State Fair with all of our great president ial candidates. We had tim scott with us today and he is doing fabulous, out shaking those hands. We did a stroll through the live stock barns. So good to see the president ial candidates getting out and meeting iowa voters. I was able to spend time with nikki haley and ron desantis the other day as well, and we really are having a great time. But you were talking about bidenomics and thats weighing heavily on iowa voters minds. John so when you take a look at it, the president is north of you in wisconsin, and saying rebuilding the economy from the middle class out, inflation is costing 709 more than it was two years ago, including the fact admission to the Iowa State Fair is 2 more than last year, according to moodys analytics, and asking if they are living paycheck to paycheck, 60 are still living paycheck to paycheck. So, where, senator, is the effect from bidenomics . Right. Exactly, john. And for those of us that live in real america, in middle america, bidenomics means excessive inflation, excessive costs at the gas bump, at the grocery store, and i was just home last night and ran into an old neighbor and she said this her son and his daughters were not going to be able to come to the Iowa State Fair this year because they are living paycheck to paycheck. Folks cant make ends meet. Thats the effect of bidenomics on middle americans. Senator, i want to ask you about an emerging National Security threat as some people are describing it. China, the chinesebacked government entities, excuse me, sorry, i have producers in my ear. Chinesebacked entities buying large tracts of u. S. Farmland and in addition to that, using that to spy on American Farmers and even steal seeds. Take a listen to congressman Mike Gallagher with us last week. The fbi estimated china steals between 225 to 600 billion worth of American Intellectual property and Trade Secrets every year. Thats around 4,000 stolen per an American Family of four every single year. Its called the greatest transfer of wealth in human history. Gillian what are iowans saying about this . Yes, iowans are very concerned about this, and this is why ive been working on an act that would really slow down Foreign Ownership of land here in the United States. Our iowa farmers do worry about that and they want to say that land productively producing for americans, not for the chinese. And right here in iowa we have already seen in the past the chinese steal our seeds out of the soil, trying to take that intellectual property, trying to reverse engineer the seeds that we are raising here in iowa. So, we see it every day and yes, we need to watch the chinese very carefully. John let me come back if i could to the economy, senator. As you point out, its so important for so many iowans, and as gillian pointed out, the oneyear anniversary of the Inflation Reduction Act. Associated press headline, yes, inflation is down, no the Inflation Reduction Act doesnt deserve the credit. One from Harvard University says i cant think of any mechanism by way would have brought down inflation to date and another says we can say with pretty strong confidence mostly other factors that have brought inflation down and not the Inflation Reduction Act. You just had lunch with tim scott, talking with all the other candidates. What do you want those candidates who are running for the republican nomination to know about what iowans are thinking regarding the economy . Well, iowans are suffering under bidenomics, and under this administration. As i said before, groceries are up, fuel prices are up, just everything is up. And so i want tim scott and all of these other wonderful candidates just to really talk to iowans about what they will do to counter inflation. What they will do to get our economy jump started and what they are going to do to make sure that we are relying on domestically sourced energy. This is so important to really tackling a lot of these cost issues across iowa, and across the United States. Gillian before we let you go, ask you about the big political news breaking, the fourth indictment of former President Trump. What are iowans saying to you about that today . Well, i tell you, i honestly think that iowans are becoming desensitized to this. I dont even know that they are paying attention to it, the third indictment, the fourth indictment. What i do hear at the town halls going county to county in iowa, they say two systems of justice. One is your name is trump and one is your name is biden. But again, it seems to be politically motivated so much that iowans throw up their hands anymore. John one more real quick one for you, senator. When you go to the Iowa State Fair four, is it a pork chop, corn dog or funnel cake . Well, it is first the corn dog, second the pork chop on the stick, and only the funnel cake if i can split it with somebody. Gillian wow, ok. John great to see you. Love the Iowa State Fair. Thank you, senator. New crisis in the schools, this involves the teachers. Where arent there enough of them . Gillian plus this, search teams now scouring fireravaged hawaii looking for more victims as the death count continues to rise. John now heartbreak in hawaii, crews are trying to identify the 99 People Killed in the wildfires. It reduced entire neighborhoods to nothing more than ash, and search teams are scouring the rubble to look for more victims. William, what are the next steps here in the Recovery Operation . Lets listen to the president , just trying to sift through the rubble at this point. Yeah, its going to take a while. So, 90 searchers and 20 cadaver dogs right now going, sifting through the rubble in the Disaster Area looking for victims. Thats going to be about 90 complete by friday. Where we are now is a very important part of the next part of the process. So, there are 1300 individuals unaccounted for. And they expect that to increase, rather confirmed fatalities increase that maybe 10, 20 victims a day over the next week, according to the governor. Only three could be identified by fingerprints, why they are urging anyone who believes they lost a relative in the fire to come here to the Community Center to give a dna sample so police have a database to match remains that are found. Its not just ash on your clothing when you take it off. Its our loved ones. Thats the reverence. Thats why we cant have you walking down there and we had to arrest somebody for trespassing, and so if we want to keep doing this and slowing it down governor green said the fire spread about a mile a minute. Quickly overcame anyone trying to escape lahaina, and created a deadly traffic jam, and others were arriving to save friends and family, what the governor said about giving residents an early warning. Typically the communication is by cell phone, on television, all of these modalities were destroyed with the rapid fire that was moving about 60 to 80 Miles Per Hour at 1,000, Melting Fire Trucks along the way. So, it is very complicated question. We will do all we can to get more water, we will do all that we can to get more warnings for people. Hawaii electric defended its decision not to shut down power, saying it would have deprived elderly of their medical equipment. You may be talking about what happens in california, in the Shutoff Program and so we, like most utilities, dont have that program and its worth noting that even in places where this has been used, it is controversial and its not universally accepted. Its seen, it can be seen as creating a hardship for those customers that have medical needs that are higher risk. So john, they have secured housing for about 2,000 individuals, about half of those that are basically need housing for the next 36 weeks. No reports of looting. What i thought was interesting, they have put a moratorium on the sale of any property in the lahaina area to stop predators from coming in and giving money to some of these families that have had the properties for centuries, or rather decades. John the thought of looting in a situation like this is actual appalling. William, thank you. Gillian. Gillian the city of lahaina was just about reduced to rubble. Among the ruins, something remarkable. A Catholic Church managed to withstand the claims, shows the surrounding destruction, The Red Circle in the center is the church. As of now, it largely appears to remain intact. And joining us is monsignor, the victor of maui in lahaina, and talk to us about what you have experienced and what youve seen over the last several days. Thank you, gillian for having us. Appreciate it. And before we go, i want to express the gratitude of all the people here on maui for all the support and the care and the prayers and the love that is being sent to the islands from all across the country and around the world. We are just kim jongun we have inundated, people are expressing their support and gratitude and its very, very helpful. Thank you so much. The church is still standing. For us its a real miracle. The father, the pastor there, has gone into the church and he says that none of it is scorched and nothing is happening, they could just go in there and Start Services again, no problem. So, its quite amazing, and even at the foot of the altar there were flowers and when he said he went in, they were not even withered from all the heat from the fire. And whats even more amazing is all the buildings directly behind the church, the preschool, the convent, the two school buildings, as well as the parish hall, all of it is all of it burnt to the ground. But the church is still standing. And everything around the church is in ashes. Its amazing. So, we are just as people of faith we always look for gods love and presence in the world, whether its through the love of family and friends or whether its, you know, through rainbows or god bringing rain to places where theres no rain, you know, this is just for us a wonderful sign that god doesnt abandon his people. So, we are very grateful for that. Gillian we are delighted to hear about it, congregation far . Bishop and i went in to do celebrate mass with them on the 8 00 mass, we got permission from the Police Department to go in, and we had a full church and the people there were so grateful, i think to be together. Because here in hawaii we celebrate family all the time and ohana is a very important thing and for them to support one another and be with one another and see one another and, you know, console one another has been very healing for them, and thats all part of the healing process. So, this is going to take a long time, but you know, its important that we continue to support one another on this journey because its going to be a long journey. Gillian it will be, and monsignor, we appreciate you sharing the story with us today. Thank you. We are appreciative you are getting the word out and helping us to recover and to again rebuild. Thank you so much. Gillian thank you. If you want to help victims of the hawaii wildfires from home, visit redcross. John the white house forging ahead with the plan to erase 39 billion in for giving Student Loans, how is the Administration Planning to pay for this when the u. S. Deficit is past 1 trillion. Stephanie is the former Bernie Sanders senior economic adviser and professor, and doug holtzeakin, president of the American Action forum. Stephanie, lets start with you, because obviously the president lost his big student loan forgiveness plan in the supreme court. That was worth some 400 billion, so he scaled it down. It still could apply to some 804,000 borrowers, worth almost 40 billion. People are apparently going to get notes that say your Student Loans have been forgiven. But forgiven by whom and who is going to pay for it, stephanie . Well, forgiven by the administration, by the department of education, that has announced this program and the answer to the who is going to pay for it question is really the same answer that we would give when we talk about tax cuts or anything else. Congress does not have a budget that works like a household budget. We are not on the hook for this. So, what congress is effectively doing in this case, what the administration is doing, is saying to people dont repay loans, hold on to the cash. We dont want the revenue, you keep it, and you do Something Else with it. And so will it increase the deficit, yeah, a modest increase in the deficit but remember that the governments deficit is a financial surplus to the rest of the economy so it isnt a question about whether who is going to pay for it but a who gets a small windfall on the either side of that equation. The taxpayer is going to pay for it, pretty straightforward and the problem with this forgiveness like those other initiative that preceded it, at the end of the day when you are done, the education of those individuals is not any better, their capability in the labor market isnt any better, lifetime earnings arent improved. All you have done is create inequities they didnt have to pay, and others did, and now anticipation of the forgiveness program. No up side to this, and mystery where the administration is obsessed with serial forgiveness programs. John and what about the idea, too, stephanie, when you start forgiving federal Student Loans you send a signal to the colleges its ok to increase tuition to the degree you are because you know, come hell or high water, people are going to find a way to pay for it, even if taxpayers at large have to foot that bill. Ok, lets say a couple of things. First, the cost of College Education has gone astronomical, and it is a problem, and we need Real Solutions to rein in the cost of university and College Education, no question about it. But this idea the taxpayer is on the hook for this is simply wrong. Unless there was an announcement that this legislation legislation was coming out and was going to be paired with increases in taxes, then we could talk about an additional burden on taxpayers. This is a pure one sided government saying to a small group of people, listen, in this case there were some clerical errors, and in most instances trying to right a wrong. People were repaying loans, did not get credit, things were not kept track of, Record Keeping error, some borrowers were put into forebearance and so people were trying to do the right thing and the system failed on the back end. Thats what the move is about. John you mentioned taxes, brings me to this point. U. S. Borrowing continues to move almost out of control. 1. 6 trillion in Deficit Spending the first ten months of fiscal year 23. That adds up to 5. 3 billion a day. The fiscal year 23 deficit, 131 above where it was last year. Bidens plan to reduce the deficit is increase taxes, 25 minimum tax on the wealthiest americans, 28 Corporate Tax rate, where he starts. Hes not planning, doug, to spend less, hes just planning schemes to take in more money here. Is that the right thing to do when the economy is still struggling to recover . No, its not a strategy thats going to produce sustained economic growth. You can find in the United States 15 states that have Credit Ratings better than the u. S. Treasury right now. Those same 15 states, the best places to do business. So if you want a good credit rating, service your debt, you should have a strong underlying economy. This is not a recipe to do that. I think the administration has really sent the message they are not serious about the budget, they propose iteration after iteration of build back better and people recognize that, so we need to turn the page, get serious about preserving what people depend on, Social Security and medicare and put a lid on the red ink flowing out of washington. John obviously a lot to chew on between now and election day. Stephanie kelton, good to have you on. And doug, nice to see you. Gillian across the u. S. , schools are struggling to address Teacher Shortages, puts students at a major disadvantage to other countries. A lot of them in america still struggling to catch up following covid lockdowns. Mark meredith joins us from the d. C. Newsroom. How big of a problem is this . This appears to be a big problem all over the country, even as parents like you and i celebrate when the kids go back to school, many are scrambling to find the staff to handle the kids going back to class. In the wake of the pandemic, many long time educators left their jobs, and shortages appear to go well beyond just the classroom. Started out as a Teacher Shortage and now we are calling it the Educator Shortage because its really every aspect of schools from Lunchroom Workers and bus drivers to teachers to administrators. This year the Rand Corporation published a study why teachers are leaving, the reasons are several, but the majority are leaving because of stress, disappoint in the job, low salary and the number of hours required. Some schools are even moving to four day a week sessions instead of the five. In arizona, one district is attracting teachers from other states by showcasing the benefits of a shorter work week. Obviously the biggest thing for me is to be able to rejuvinate. Catch up on school work, be able to get the rest i need in order to come back on monday and be prepared for everything. Studies show a lot more schools are moving to this fourday a week session, but dont know the full impact yet on kids in the long run. Gillian. Gillian Mark Meredith here in d. C. Thank you. John. The new live action version of the film could be a flop for the mouse house. Lauren simonetti is live in New York City with the story. Lauren in. Hi, john. It turns out the actor that plays snow white didnt think much of the original version, which is the highest Grossing Disney Film ever when adjusted for inflation. This is Rachel Zeigler back in september. The original cartoon came out in 1937. Evidently so. Theres a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her. Weird. So we didnt do that this time. She also said she wouldnt mind if Prince Charming was cut from the remake. Because in 2023, who needs love or respect for a classic . While snow white might need updating, might not need such a makeover. Maybe they should stick to original storytelling. John thanks, lauren. You know, why remake it in the first place . If you have to change seven of the main characters, i gu guess john we watched the new version of the little mermaid. It was a good movie. Doesnt seem forceful enough.
