Wildfire updates. What can you tell us now in. Reporter hey there, griff, good morning to you. Were alongside one of the main entry points into the town of a lahaina. People here have been lined up for hours, some of these folks sleeping in their cars waiting for the curfew in the town of lahaina to expire. Some of these people have nothing left, they just want to get in, see whats left of the town. Take a listen to some folks about what theyve seen there. I want people to know that there are people out here suffering, and we need donations. We need, we need people shipping things out here. We need families fed, we need yeah, we need so much men help. Reporter home after home in lahaina, gone. One estimate from core logic puts the estimate of destroyed homes at more than 3,000. The rising death toll now at 80 people as rescue crews search for more victims. Thousands of people have now left the island, and around 1400 are currently staying in Emergency Shelters here. Its still unclear how the fires started, but the the island was ripe for an inferno. Extremely dry conditions combined with 70 80 mile mileperhour winds caused in part by passing Hurricane Dora created a challenging battle for the islands firefighters. Residents say they were given little warning and that the islands Emergency Sirens didnt go off with texts being sent out instead. Many escaping with just their lives, some In Lahaina Jumping into the water to save themselves as this town was razed by fire. The coast guard says it rescued 17 people. They were fortunate to have been there during the rescues at a time when the smoke lifted for them to be able to see the people who needed to be rescued. The helicopters that were launched were actually not able to approach closely enough during the worst of fire to see through the smoke. Reporter power and cell service is slowly starting to return to the west side of the island, but now another challenge. The water there now undrinkable because of toxins in the water caused by these wildfires. Griff, back to you. Griff wow, max. You know, the images youre showing are devastating, and that that plea from that young man is just heartbreaking. Reporter yes. Griff is there any indication that the residents like him are getting some help . Reporter help is on the way. The American Red Cross is on the ground, the county is mobilized, Distribution Points for water and food. But there is us from ration from locals. You know frustration from locals. The curfew has kept people out for ours hours, people not able to access their homes that have been maybe destroyed, theyre not able to get in. So on one hand, there is help available, there is help on the way, but still a lot of frustration from locals who say the help is not coming fast enough. Molly the American Red Crosses is assisting locals with Recovery Efforts after this, the worst Natural Disaster in the states history. Max was detailing some of the big challenges there from the water system to these incred by long lines of people who want to get in and take a look at their homes, what may or may not be left of them. So some 3,000 people without homes now, homes destroy. What is the red cross doing right now there on the ground . Yes. And youre absolutely right, the devastation of this wildfire has impacted thousands of people. It truly is devastating. Everybody is impacted by this. I ebb mean, ive been here for about almost 24 hours now, and i can tell you theres not a Single Person ive met down here who doesnt have a family member, a friend, a loved one who was running for their lives x. So our hearts go out, and we want them to know that we are here. Right now our focus is [audio difficulty] we are are working with municipalities, the governors office, the national guard, were working with fema to make sure that we can set up shelters where we need to, we can get resources, food, water, comfort kits to them and also be that thread, be that neighbor to talk to. Its no shortage of the imagination that people have undergone something traumatic here. Sometimes they need that spiritual care, someone to listen. Were going to be there for that through all of this. Molly yeah. Of its heartbreaking when we see these aerials shots of just how tremendous the damage is. Enormous logistical challenges as well. One of the most difficult parts of this is there are still so many people missing. How can people continue to look for their loved ones if they have yet to be found at this time . I want to tell you about a story that i encountered yesterday. I was flying and peeking to my Flight Attendant who said they had a gone two days without hearing from a relative who was caught up in the fire. It was hours before they took off they got that note saying we found them, they are okay. There are so many other stories like that, and the red cross is really trying to help people with reconnection. There are some challenges, theres still major infrastructure down, so cell service, internet, things like that, but we encourage people right now were asking them to call 1800redcross, 7332767, and and you have options on this how people get connected to their loved ones, and we can start relaying those messages. Molly you know, you were talking about where youre standing, where this devastation is. Theres a hot of interisland heart there in hawaii. What are the people hawaii doing between island to island to help out there particularly in this devastated community of lahaina . I cant speak to specifically what people are doing, but what i can tell you is at that the american are red cross is really making sure that everybody is having someone to talk to and getting resources and connecting them to those i mean, for instance, at last check we had 2100 people stayed overnight in our shelters, but during the day theyre actions acting as [inaudible] sometimes although Internet Connection may be spotty, people are coming in and charging their phones, getting water to take back home to their friends, their family, getting a bite to eat at our place. We are making sure that we can help them try to connect with people wherever they are [inaudible] molly yeah. That reconnection, you know, can heal so many hearts right now. There was an interview earlier today, a young woman from lahaina who said she didnt know which of her friends were alive, which were dead. Theres still so much confusion there on the ground watchs the greatest logistical challenge for the red cross there . I think you just said it, i mean, right now we are hours away from the mainland, but we are getting supplies in, were getting people in. So those resources are coming, but right now its just the logistics of dealing with this wild wildfire. We saw it spread so fast, so rapidly, so chaosically at times. Chaosically at times. With we dont want to direct people to areas that arent safe, so were still trying to work with our local officials on the ground and communicate, okay, are these hot spots gone, where can we start moving in to help people and also just simply how can they get to us. It actually is a big problem. Trying to find ways to spread messages whether its through interviews like this, whether its serving out Alert Systems or or even just driving down a communitys street just making sure once these areas are safe, we can get in there and start getting to people. Griff Attorney General Merrick Garland appointing a Special Counsel in the Hunter Biden Investigation as hunters plea deal reaches an impasse. Reporter griff, Justice Department now has three active Special Counsels investigating the president of the United States, his son and a former president of the United States, a former attorney, Acting Attorney General thinks this is the reason why this latest Special Counsel was started to investigate hunter biden. Question is why now, what has a happened, what has changed. And i think what has changed is that the congress and Representative Comer and chairman jordan and others have found evidence. There is a lot of smoke surrounding the case, and now they cant sweep this under the rug. Reporter republicans have been calling for a Special Counsel for a long time, griff, to investigate hunter biden, but many in the gop are not happy with david weiss who has already been investigating hunter for the past five year. The appointment of Potential Counsel allows weiss to bring more charges outside the State Of Delaware where the u. S. Tone. Heres Jonathan Turley about this plea deal and the additional charges. Theres no question this magnifies the danger for hunter biden. His attorney told the prosecutor in the courtroom, well, lets just rip it up. Well, that doesnt go over well with most prosecutors, and there are some major charges out are there like a fara violation for being an unregistered Foreign Agent that can be brought forward. They can end up elevating some of these counts to felonies. He is not in a good place. Reporter recall just a few weeks ago up hunter biden walked into that delaware courtroom where he thought he was just minutes away from being a free man, free from being charged any further. Of course, that all fell apart and he could this could be going to a trial. Hes not a trained politician, experienced politician, he hasnt done this before, so theres some of these off the Cuff Appointments that i do think have some appeal. He got the words right, he looked like he did it april well, so i give him an a on performance. Griff all right, lets talk, you know, i was so excited when id had you guys in here today. I wanted to talk about as we get closer and closer, i know iowas kicking off to the election, and fox, of course, has the first debate coming up just a in just a few weeks. It seems it is investigation after investigation, scandal after scandal, the issues are almost absent. No ones talking about health care, few people are talking about inflation but yet, obviously, we had the Hunter Biden Internal counsel announced. What do you make about that, marc . Are we in danger of missing the issues, or does that come later in no, i think it comeses later. At the end of day, i think its going to be a wash. Obviously, the former president , you know, will face charges as he does, many people think that joe biden should be facing charges, and well see if he does. But at the end of the day, they will discount both of those and say whos going to lower my gas prices, who is going to secure the border, who is going to bring us back to those policies where where america was winning again and not what we have going on right now. And so i think, yeah, its easy right now to focus on the investigations and the information that investigation thats to come, but in the end i think people are going to vote with their pocketbook, On The Issues and policies. Griff what about you, david . The how much of an impact do you think take just yesterday the announcement of the hunter biden Special Counsel. How much of an impact do you think that has on this race . Weve seen this coming for a while. Trump has been indicted at three different courts around the country, could be in a fourth cart in georgia. Its going to weigh on his campaign, and now we see the Special Counsel being announced for hunter biden. And and so this is going to be a big issue. And most importantly, its going to be a distraction for the candidates themselves. But notably, joe biden is not under investigation, and theres been no ed thats come forward to can evidence to suggest that hes committed any griff we dont know thats true, its going to be hard for him to see his son going through this. I think whats important is jack smith, both when he announced the indictment on the classified documents case and the january 6th crimes, he said hes innocent until proven gl. The same holds true for joe biden excuse me, for hunter biden. Hes innocent until proven guilty. Its good that we have Special Counsels in both cases, and lets let them do their job. Lets let the process of rule of law play out, and lets try not to let it be a distraction. Its going to really weigh on the candidates. Griff great point youre making although just to interject one thing, we dont fully know garland was asked whether or not this Special Counsel now, the scope of it, will involve Influence Peddling and possibly joe biden himself. We dont know the answer to that. It may are well be the case. But the larger point is with so many investigations, Special Counsels going on, are we nearing a dangerousing area from which we cant come back in terms of politicization of politics . I mean, we know if former President Donald Trump gets back into office, hes promising were going to see more of what weve got right now. See i dont think this is pretty case. On both sides politicization. They both did things that deserve investigation, and it would be political if we didnt investigate them, if we didnt appoint Special Counsel, if we didnt treat them like any other person, all of whom are subject to the laws in the United States. So its really important that we let this play out. And i would also note that for donald trump, hes going to make all sorts of defenses. Hes going to conflate his campaign with his defense in these cases, but i hope that he tries to focus On The Issues and his platform when hes talking, when hes campaigning around the country and he saves his defenses for court. Griff im not even sure he needs to though, because every time he gets indicted, his numbers go up more. Marc, can any of these other candidates, desantis, ramaswamy, tim scott, nikki haley, can they break through with so much attention being put on donald trump and the in investigations . No, its other. I mean, donald trump is up by 40 points in the real clear politics average against his closest competitor. John mccain was up sorry, trailing by only 14 points on this day 2008 cycle. And he was able to come back. Theres a big difference between 14 points and 40 points. I mean, this nomination is all but over, and now the time is for everyone on the republican side to focus on the real opponent if which is joe biden. Customs and Border Protection in the city of brownsville, each Bus Passenger underwent a Temperature Check ask was asked if they had any medical conditions that may require medical assistance. Some republicans never liked the idea of a Special Counsel, House Oversight Committee Chair james comer has long felt it would take away the investigative power from the house gop if as committees continue to probe the biden family. I dont think we need any more evidence to hoe that the the president of justice is trying to obstruct our investigation. I think Merrick Garland made that argument for us today. Reporter House Speaker Kevin Mccarthy stated this action cannot be used to obstruct congressional investigations or hate wash the biden family corruption. Weiss negotiated the Sweetheart Deal that couldnt get approved, how could he be trusted as a special come. Some republicans are Special Counsel. Senate chuck grassley, for him its weiss thats the cause for concern. I sent a letter saying we should is are a Special Counsel. On the other hand, i have some question about weiss doing it. Reporter well, thats because theres been so much back and forth. In may, irs Whistleblower Gary Shapley testified that u. S. Attorney weiss sought Special Counsel status because he felt limited in his powers to fully investigate hunter biden. Weiss and Attorney General Merrick Garland disputed the claims, now heres shapleys attorney. To choose that very same person to go ahead and elevate them to Special Counsel status when he has been claiming to congress all along that he didnt need it is, seems like an odd choice. Reporter and, griff, last hour you spoke with democratic congressman ami bera, he provided his thoughts. Its good for the country to see a former president on trial or, you know, a president s son on trial. I just would hope that theres a way to resolve these without putting the country through either one of these cases. Reporter well, critics also argue that appointing a sitting u. S. Attorney goes Against Doj Regulations which state that a Special Counsel should come from outside the Justice Department, griff. Griff no shortage of thoughts on this issue, and a lot more to come. For more on the potential legal fallout from the Special Counsel appointment and how it might affect the Hunter Biden Probe, We Have Constitutional Attorney Smith joining us now. Thank you so much for giving us a little bit of your time on a saturday. This ongoing probe, theres kind of a new era, a new part of it now that weve seen this appointment of Special Counsel although the same prosecutor that nearly got hunter biden that plea deal that fell apart. This could take quite a while. Heres comer from the Oversight Committee kind of talking about their concerns. The move by Attorney General garland is part of the Justice Departments efforts to attempt ad biden family coverup in light of the Oversight Committees mounting evidence of president joe bidens role in his familys scheme selling the brand for millions of dollars to foreign nationals. Your thoughts on that, a coverup, a stall tactic. Well, lets put this into some perspective, molly. Lets go back to the 19900s where ken starr was appointed the Special Counsel to investigate bill clinton and all of his various issues. Keep in mind that ken starr was appointed, he did not work for the department of justice, he did not work for the Attorney General, janet reno at the time. He was picked because he was a prominent attorney from outside of the United States government, from outside of the department of justice. Thats how Special Counsels are supposed to work. And as you mentioned, the regulations that govern the department of justice specifically state that a Special Counsel is supposed to come from outside of the government. Because remember, its not just about making sure that the process is complete, come we e hencive and fair comprehensive and fair, it also has to have the proper appearance of or fairness. And again, here you have david weiss who literally works as an employee for the department of justice under Merrick Garland being picked by Merrick Garland, the handpicked Attorney General of joe biden to investigate joe bidens son. Obviously, the optics dont look right here which is why youre supposed to, if youre the Attorney General of the United States, look outside the the president of justice to the department of justice. Molly republicans have been i leasing new information, new bank records, the latest from the House Committee on oversight and accountability detailing payments made to the biden family from russia, kazahkstan and ukraine. The president doesnt seem to enjoy being asked about those revelations. Heres peter to do city asking the president a question a few days ago. Reporter theres this testimony now where one of your sons former Business Associates is claiming that you were on speaker e phone a lot with them, talking business. Ive never talked business, and i knew youd have a lousy question. Reporter well, what why is that a lousy question . Because its not true. Molly what role do you think congress should play at this point in time . Well, you know, given the fact that david weiss said that he was going to come and testify to congress in september and now that hes been made the Special Counsel, one wonders if hes going to show up, and if he does show up, is he able to talk about the Hunter Biden Investigation . Certainly, one of the issues you have to start to look to if youre the congress is whether or not this really does justify looking more seriously at things like impeachment if you feel theres some coverup going on at the department of justice. And, again, you know, congress does have an oversight role. Thats part of the process of being one of the branches of government. Department of justice is supposed to do their job but, again, congress is able to to hold people politically accountable especially if they feel the department of justice is not doing what theyre supposed to be doing. Molly President Trump is out in iowa today on the campaign trail. Meanwhile, the u. S. District judge in the case, specifically the january 6th case can, has warned donald trump and his attorneys about inflammatory statements and has essentially said it could potentially force her to speed his trial up on those charges related to his bid to overturn the 2020 election allegedly. There was a little shot from iowa there for just a moment. But your thoughts this on this, the prosecutors would like to see this trial start january 3 january 2nd. That is just before the Iowa Caucuses which are also slated to be in january. Your thoughts. Well, first of all, the constitutional right to a speedy trial wrongs to the criminal defendant belongs to the criminal defendant, in in this case President Trump. It doesnt belong to the department of justice. So if anyone wants to speed e the case along, its up to the defendant. Now, of course, the alternative which which usually happens, molly, in these kinds of cases is the defendants need time to investigate and take whats moan as discovery, get their information together because, remember, the department of justice has been working on this january 6th stuff literally for years. So theyve got their ducks presumably in a row to be able to try the case against President Trump. But donald trump has not had that advantage, so hes going to need time to prepare his defense. Theres a lot of allegations that are here involving various states and how the, you know, whether there were Voting Irregularities and the like, and donald trump may want to as part of Husband Defense look into those things, and thats all going to take time. Anybody that thinks youre going to have a trial in d. C. In january, frankly, i think thats completely unrealistic, and i think the judge probably knows that. Until sunset to monitor the water cans and try to spot any sharks before, god forbid, any more attacks. This comes after mononights heart attack attack on a 65 year woman. Yesterday there was another Shark Sighting, another scare here at Rockaway Beach. Our Producer Seth was here for this. You see lifeguards pulling people out of the water. This process took ab an hour, and i mention it comes after a shark attack on mono, the first major shark attack in New York City since the 1950s. Take a look at this next picture.
