News of this broke just in the last 30 minutes or so after a letter was published by a lawyer based here in the United States who was representing three of these five people who are apparently moved to house arrest in iran today after serving time in prison, at least for the last several years. Earliest dating back to 2015. We dont know exactly where these now, i dont want to say freed at this point, but the prisoners put under house arrest have been moved to in iran but the lawyer representing the families say they got direct visual confirmation the people were moved out of a prison and moved into what you have to imagine a more comfortable place in iran as they are waiting their next steps. No official reaction yet either from the white house or the State Department but indications that Something Like this could be in the works now for the last several weeks, if not months. There has kind of been a talk on the sidelines what might be happening behind the scenes. Iran is likely to have to wait to decide what they want to say about this exchange, about who they have been able to retrieve back as a result of this. I believe the last time we saw a Prisoner Swap like this would date back to 2016. And also imagine we will hear a lot from Congressional Republicans who have warned in recent months any potential deal with iran would want to have Congress Weigh in on, an official check and balance here. Obviously a lot of talk about what u. S. And iranian relationships would look like under the Biden Administration, of course it was during the Trump Administration back in 2018 that we saw the Iran Nuclear Deal reached by then president obama thrown out and a lot of questions about what the relationship would look like. We know Secretary Of State Antony Blinken will have a few different events on his schedule, not tied necessarily to what was happening with iran but certainly possible he could weigh in on these latest developments at those events this afternoon over at the State Department. I believe we will have cameras in there and able to likely shout a few questions at that. But the news coming from the lawyer representing three of these five Iranian Americans who have been detained for the last several years now claiming they have been transferred to house arrest in iran and part of a Prisoner Swap. We have not gotten any confirmation what the terms or conditions would be. The president is out west in utah, and a private Campaign Fundraiser this evening before flying to washington. I would imagine an official white house reaction with the next little bit here. A lot of worldwide reaction to this as well, and sandra, well let you know what the official word is from the lawmakers once we get it. Reportedly if the deal does indeed completely go through iran would be able to access these funds only to buy food, medicine and other humanitarian purposes, Qatar Central Bank overseeing the funds. What do you believe are the implications of this deal . This is taking hostages for ransom. World State Sponsor of terrorism. Talking about possibly reportedly 6 to 7 billion in ransom from these frozen funds that are actually in south korean banks. Again, to put this in context, this is the value of irans entire Military Budget Last Year in 2021. Also to put it in context a little bit more when obama did the deal, president obama did the deal mark was referring to he gave the iranians 1. 7 billion for five hostages. During the Trump Administration, under mike pompeo, we were able to get two american hostages out of iran for 0. In the Trump Administration, we would never pay off the worlds leading sponsor of terrorism, number one. Number two, the standards of Obama Administration, get five hostages out for 1. 7. This is not only 6 to 7 billion in frozen ransom funds for these hostages, they are also reportedly doing an exchange. So we are also going to have to give them five iranian prisoners in addition to the 6 to 7 billion. I cant stress enough how poorly negotiated this is and i would say sandra, top iranian officials have said publicly they think they should take american hostages in order to balance their budget. We dont know yet how many prisoners the United States is going to release in exchange, its unconfirmed. As soon as word breaks we will bring it to you. It may be less than five. What are they liable to do with that . Well, none of this has been confirmed yet. Well have to see. According to the letter of the law, this deal, they are only going to be able to use it for food and medicine and those sorts of things. Thats pretty easy to get around. In the Obama Administration when they did the jcpoa, there were 90 billion of sanctions released given them and Spoiler Alert for the audience, the money was not used as iran said it would be, for infrastructure, new schools or hospitals or anything of the like. They are searching for survivors where the massive flames wiped neighborhoods off the map on wednesday. More than 100 hawaiians jumped into the pacific. They were rescued by coast guard. Sandra they are scrambling to find shelter for thousands, and tourists are fleeing. Dan springer has the latest, are the fires still burning, dan . Yes, but they have really made a lot of progress on them, sandra. This was really a windwhipped fire that began on tuesday, the story took a grim turn overnight as the death toll on the Island Of Maui jumped from 6 to 36 and fears it will be higher than that. Hospitals have been overreturn by burn and Smoke Inhalation victims. More than 270 structures have been destroyed, many of them homes and businesses in the popular tourist town of lahaina, which has been devastated. People reported were escaping the flames by Running Into The Ocean or getting into boats. Thousands have been taken to shelter. Woke up this morning and got on our phones, took pictures of our house, just down to the slab. Nothing but smoke. Cinders. We came with the clothes we have on and dog and two kids. The fire started tuesday night and was fanned by ferocious winds from hurricane dora. The Eye Of The Hurricane was several hundred miles away but gusts on maui reached up to 75 miles an hour, absolutely no way of fighting a wildfire in those conditions. Maui has also been experiencing a drought with very little rain since may. When the winds died down later yesterday, the National Guard was able to fly their planes and start dropping water on the flames and progress has been made. One of the big concerns is getting tourists off the island. All the Major Airlines pitched in getting their biggest planes there to fly tourists home. Officials say they were able to get more than 11,000 visitors out of maui yesterday, and those efforts are continuing today. And for people who have been to maui, the 150yearold banion tree is a mustsee. It appears the tree, planted here in 1873, has been damaged, trunks and branches are charred but it is still standing. Anyone who has a trip to maui is asked to postpone it. They have other things going on, they cannot take more people on the island now. Sandra. Sandra keep us posted on all of that. It took a little more precedence for lahaina. 30 personnel assisting Maui County Police with Traffic Control because there are still about 16 roads that are closed on that island. Also have another 30 that is assisting with Search And Rescue in wide area search and their work has probably helped get a more accurate number on the number of fatalities there. Direct impact. We also have two c47 chinook, you had some footage of the ch47 helicopters doing Fire Suppression with the water buckets. They made 58 runs yesterday and dropped over 100,000 gallons on the fire. And when speaking to the pilots after the mission, they did say it made a difference and the winds being lowered, big help. We know tragically 36 americans have been lost during the wildfire. Dont know how many more are injured. This is still Search And Rescue for you. How is the Hospital System coping with all of this . I just came from a briefing that maui county gave to the Hawaii State Emergency Management Agency and the hospitals are treating a lot of burn victims and Smoke Inhalation. Right now they dont seem like they are overwhelmed and there might be even more people coming in today. Its still going to affect a lot of people. It is completely ongoing and information is really hard to get on maui with the communications down on the lahaina side. Theyll have briefings all throughout the day and im sure updates about that exact thing in hospitals. We have had people from the mainland contact my office saying hey, im a doctor, i would like to help and we are letting them know thank you so much for their showing their aloha to assist our state and maui really needs help but at this time the hospitals are taking care of those who need care. I still think very favorably of him. He seems to be lagging somewhat in the polls. Yeah, he is. Take a look at this. We had a great turnout and i had a lot of people say thank you very much for hosting these. It gives us an opportunity to hear from candidates, a little bit of a different interview. We ask some fun questions, things about policy and so its a great mix and there will continue to be a great turnout as ive noticed and traveled the state and participated in a lot of events, iowans are engaged, they are turning out in record numbers. They are kicking the tires with all the candidates. They are listening, they are asking questions. So, i really dont believe the national polls. I know iowans and ive had them come up to me, and today, and say hey, most importantly we want to get a candidate that has a vision and can execute on day one, and bottom line, we want the candidate that we believe can win in 2024 and put a republican in the white house. And thats the mindset of iowans, and im seeing it reflected at the events that im going to. Sandra very interesting. We know that ron desantis speaking today, hes nationally polling still double digits behind trump, this is a live picture of him speaking there in iowa. But simultaneously he seems to be gaining traction there in your state in iowa. Will he use attendance there at the fair to his advantage . Will this help him in this race . I think so. Well, hes doing and i think some of the other candidates are, too. So, but i know that he is doing the 99 county tour and hes showing up in rural iowa, hes talking to voters, hes listening to voters, hes talking about his vision, and thats a really good thing to do. Rick santorum did it, he was successful in that caucus. So it matters because iowans will show up and they want to talk to the candidates. They want to ask the questions and so its a great thing to do. Sandra you know who is not showing up is the former president , donald trump. Put up on the screen here, this is your fireside chats, you said you spoke with larry elder already. Youve got pence and burgum, suarez coming up tomorrow, saturday is another big with ramaswamy and nikki haley and desantis and august 18th. You have them all there except former President Trump. He said that you shirked your commitment to remain neutral in the campaign and claim responsibility. He thinks he helped you and you are not helping him and he doesnt need to sit down. What is your reaction to that . Well, thats his choice. I would love to have the opportunity to interview him. All of the candidates are, ive talked to chris christie, hes a good friend, hes not participating in iowa, thats his choice. I have done so many events with every single one of the candidates. I love it, im having fun and i can tell you that they are seeing record turnout at all the events because ive participated with so many of the candidates. Its a long standing tradition for governors, especially at the beginning of the caucus to stay neutral. I want all of the candidates coming to iowa because i want iowans to hear from them. I want them to ask the questions and it really helped them be a better candidate when they have to test their message and hear whats on the minds of everyday iowan, and they are knowledgeable with the issues so it is a winwin. Its a win for the candidates, a win for iowans, a win for me because i get to talk about issues important to our state and i get to highlight the great things that are happening in the state of iowa and we are on the move and i get to talk about that as well. Sandra we certainly sense your enthusiasm, and speaking of the long history and memorable moments from the iowa state fair, our team put together some of these lookbacks over the years, over the decades. People are starting to focus and so you know, its going to move, we are going to things are going to shake out. Breaking news out of the white house. Sandra latest on the Prisoner Swap we were getting the early details on. The National Security Council Spokesperson for Jake Sullivan has put out a tweet saying we can confirm reports that iran has released from Prison Five Americans who were unjustly detained and placed them under house arrest. Far from appearing to be a done deal, mark meredith, what are we learning about the Actual Exchange and the details involved . Sandra, good afternoon yet again. The biggest news here, the white house now confirming that Five Americans who had been detained in iran a few different years here, different sentences, have been moved to house arrest but are still in iran. That they have not left the country, that they have not made their way back to the United States and whats interesting here, the National Security council through their statement made it clear the negotiations are still ongoing. So as you said, not a done deal. The statement reads, we will therefore have little in the way of details to provide about the state of their house arrest or efforts to secure their freedom. Meaning the white house not yet willing to say what was done in exchange to make this happen for the five Iranian Americans to be moved out of prison, out into house arrest. Whats interesting is the white house has also identified three of the five people who have been moved out of this prison, but they are not listing all five. They say two of those involved are still asking for their privacy. So the big question is what are the negotiations looking like that went into this event today. A lawyer representing some of the families trying to secure their release was the one that broke the news and hes pushing back on a Prisoner Swap, quoted and said no, that wasnt true, i didnt say the word Prisoner Swap and also interesting in the statement from the National Security council they dont say Prisoner Swap either. They say the status of the unjustly Detained Americans in iran. So, whether or not we saw some exact deal signed yet, that still looks like it has not happened. Maybe the ball was rolling they were able to get closer today than the last several months. We have reached out to the senate and house Foreign Relations committee. A lot of lawmakers will want to know what was put into place to make Something Like this happen. Whether or not we are going to hear the president talk about this has yet to be seen. And the Secretary Of State has a few events on his schedule. But the white house does not sound like popping champagne, instead saying moved to house arrest, a sign of notable progress but the americans are not home yet and they are not going to rest until the americans are home and once again, they say the u. S. Citizens should never have been detained in the first place. An indication they are not going to admit any wrongdoing. Well look to see what the details are. Sandra mark, stay with me for a second. Initial reports, headlines were indicating a deal had been reached like a done deal and new the details. Nbc news said it was a planned Prisoner Swap. Theward swap is not used in the statements by the white house or the State Department, we received it by matt miller, saying they are relieved to learn iranian authorities have released five american citizens, naming three of them, and two other individuals wish to remain private. They are being moved from prison to house arrest, they are in touch with the families. And theyll continue to monitor their health and welfare closely. To your point, we welcome the individuals released from prison to house arrest, they never should have been arrested in the first place. They must be allowed to depart iran and reunited with their loved ones as soon as possible. And we are about to hear from President Biden in Salt Lake City just moments from now, hes expected to speak. Well see if he says anything specifically on this. Reading through the white house statement, mark, it says until that time of their release and when they return home to the United States, negotiations for their eventual release remain ongoing and are delicate. So mark, this is not done yet. I think you hit the nail on the head here. Its interesting, you mentioned the nbc report. The lawyer that first put out the statement that broke open it 30 minutes ago, tweeted out the nbc report was wrong he said he never said there was a Prisoner Swap in place, and what we have from the National Security council they dont use the language either. Thats not to say that is not whats going to happen but not a done deal yet, and hedging their bet, moving the americans to house arrest as opposed to moving them out of country because in the statement you just mentioned from the State Department spokesperson, the last line says they must be allowed to depart iran and reunite with their loved ones. Doesnt sound like they have Plane Tickets out of iran, but saying the progress here, the good faith first step and then see of whether or not there are any other terms or conditions of release put out there. I remember there was rumors in march, back and forth about was a deal going to happen, a swap fairly soon, that did not come to be. We have seen other countries secure the release of some of their citizens out of iranian custody. As you talk about, the big headline, Five Americans who were detained in iran being moved out of a pretty notorious prison in iran under house arrest. As to whether they will get out tomorrow, the next week, has yet to be seen. And the president is at a Veterans Event in utah, i would imagine its not in the speech but instead leave the statement to speak for itself. One of the barriers or spoke in the wheel we heard about came monday when the iranians identified an unidentified iranian american woman, working for an afghan ngo, dont know the name of the organization either. But consensus this is now on pause. Anybody at the white house expressing how that played into this, or the fate of that woman arrested inside iran . No, we have not heard that. But again, two of the people that were, im sorry, moved to house arrest, they have not been publicly identified. So its certainly possible the person you are referencing could be the one that was the latest development or the latest one to become caught up in this situation but we dont have confirmation of that. The lawyer only represents three of the five involved. I would imagine the names will come out eventually but the National Security council is saying they dont want to say who they are because they want to remain private. They all say the State Department has been involved in contact with the families. Theres been rumors out there that maybe the families were contacted earlier to let them know this was coming. Why would we want that done. They put a lot of money into american universities. Honestly, a lot of money into the media, too, and fund that. So, weve got to get real about all this and so i think its a more complex problem in some respects than what we faced during the cold war with the soviet union. Right now biden is totally out to lunch on this. Honestly, most of these d. C. Elites are totally out to lunch on this. Biden of course, you know, his family has made a fortune with china, so hes there are reasons why hes there. But the elites in d. C. , they are not taking it seriously. We will take it seriously.
