The 45page indictment lays out an overarching theme. The defendant lost the 2020 president ial election despite having lost the defendant was determined to remain in power. Trumps team says the case is about constitutional protection. You have the right to have free speech and say that you are questioning things that you believe are not right. But Special Counsel jack smith says the case cannot about free speech. Its about efforts the former president took to try to overturn an election. The indictment cites unnamed Trump Campaign adviser who wrote in email to other staffers dispelling allegations of mass voter fraud. He wrote, quote ill obviously hustle to help on all fronts its tough to own any of this when its all just conspiracy blank beamed down from the mothership. I am the youngest person ever to run in the republican party. But i think its more than just my age. I think its about having i see the problems that we see in the country but i still believe we are on our way up. Bret this is about First Principles what you have seen is akin to Banana Republic tactics to take out a political opponent. Thats right. I have read each of the indictments before i formed my judgment. But i believe each of these indictments, bret, reek of politicization. Im now polling third in the republican primary. It would be very easy for me if donald trump were eliminated from competition. That is not how i want to win this race. I want to win by convincing the voters to vote for me because we, the people determine who leads the country. Thats the american way, not the federal police state eliminating the competition. You read the indictment about january 6th and what the president did or did not do there. After the events of january 6th, 2021, you sounded different. You wrote in your book this. Quote it was a dark day for democracy the loser of the last elections refused to concede the race. Lost hundreds of millions of dollars from supporters and running for office again. Six days later you tweeted this what trump did last week was wrong, down right abhorrent, plain and simple. I have said so before and did i so in my piece. Did anything change from that time to this time . No, actually. In that piece, the piece i was referring to was a piece i wrote in the Wall Street Journal days after january 6th, 2021 where i argued that the real cause was systematic pervasive censorship by the government coopting social Media Companies to silence content. So what i said yesterday is the same thing as i said before. Theres a difference between a bad judgment and a crime. Would i have made the same judgments that trump made . Absolutely not. Im running in this election for a reason. But thats not the same thing as a crime. And my Rule Of Thumb is if you are going to bring a case during an election, against a prior u. S. President , it better darn well not be an untested legal theory that was made up on the fly. Thats exactly what we have seen now in three out of three indictments. And i just think it is wrong and sets a dangerous precedent in this country. Bret there are a lot of republicans who think like you do, and they see the former president , this prison term as a sympathetic character. Thats how they talk about it. I guess what im saying is, are you holding back going head to head with the former president in any way in this primary as opposed to how you talked about him back then . Im not afraid of drawing contrast with anybody and drawing differences in policy or opinions. Im not in this race to attack anybody. I personally think donald trump was an excellent president. I think that his defeat of Hillary Clinton in 2016 was probably the single most important political event in the 21st century in this country. But i believe i am better positioned to take the America First agenda even further than trump did. I think its a fact, bret. We have to admit it. I dont blame trump or anybody else for this. 30 of this country becomes psychiatrically ill when he is in the white house. Im not yet having that effect on people even when im advancing the same policies, in some instances going even further. Thats how we unite this country. I think its not by Compromising On Our prince tell pells. Its by being uncompromising who we are but doing it based on moral foundations and not vengeance and grievance. Thats the way i will lead. Bret politically, what im saying is that the former president could go up because of this indictment as we have seen in previous indictments. Not only in fundraising but in the polls. So how do you fight that in this primary as he is getting all the oxygen in the room during these times . Look, i look forward to the debate stage. I think this is going to be a great opportunity to introduce myself to the country. Bret do you think he will show up . I dont expect him i take him at his word. I think its unlikely he shows up based on his public comments. I also think as long as he shows up at some point in the process, im fine with that i started at 0. 0 in march. Im polling at third ahead of the first primary, i think we are on our way to win this primary and, more importantly, to win this general election in a landslide bringing youngs people and new people into the g. Do you think that there is and governor desantis, i asked him about in this week, too much focus on this . Do you think that its enough . How do you balance that out in policy . So, look, i wrote the book On Wokeness In America before many republicans even knew what this word was. But what i have said since day one of this campaign is that wokeism, like so many of the other risms, climatism, transgenderism they are symptoms of a deeper void. A void of purpose, meaning and identity so, yes, i think fixating on the symptom too much may cause us to police the plot. The real void is a void of what it means to be an american today. Thats the void im looking to fill. I think the way we defeat wokeness is not with a hammer. It is by diluting it to irrelevant by feel the vacuum of pursuance in this country with a vision of what it means to be a citizen of this nation. Thats my approach in the campaign and i think its a little bit different than some of the other candidates. Bret i want to ask you about something you said in an interview the past day or so. Take a listen. I dont believe the government has told us the truth. Again, im driven by evidence and data. What i have seen in the last several years is we have to be skeptic of what the government does tell us. I havent seen evidence to the contrary but do i believe everything the government told us about it . Absolutely not. To be fair, you were asked if 9 11 was an inside job. And you tweeted out to, i believe, our government has been completely forthright about 9 11. No alqaeda completely we never fully addressed who knew what in the saudi government about it. We can handle the truth. Do you believe 9 11 was an inside job . I dont. But i do believe. Bret you dont know the saudis role . Exactly right and i dont think we have ever gotten straight answers about that. Bret republicans criticizing the Biden Administration for their policy towards saudi arabia and you are going to talk about Foreign Policy. Do you think its the right thing to go down there kind of asking questions about this on a Foreign Policy perspective, diplomacy wise in this venue . Not the other way around. And that rejects the Old World Vision that it is a small group of elites that decide behind the palace hall what is is right for everybody at large. Thats a fundamental theme for this campaign it shows up many ways. Bret do you think joe biden is to be the democratic nominee. I expect to be the republican nominee i do not expect him to be the democratic nominee i dont expect to have them run against me. Bret setting up multiple committees that in their first three months have raised and spent millions of dollars. He said he has no desire to be the nominee but you dont think biden is going to be it . I dont think that biden is going to be the nominee unless trump is. But i expect to be the republican nominee and i am preparing to face off against someone other than joe biden. I think we are going to continue to see republicans and democrats kind of have their own spin on this. Of course, republicans are really focused on this First Amendment issue saying that, you know, trump can say whatever he wants. Thats not necessarily illegal to say things that are false. But if you really look at the indictment and dig into what is being argued here, you see prosecutors really pushing this idea that its not just about whether or not the things trump said about the 2020 election were false but that he knew they were false and continued to say those things in an effort to persuade and put pressure on people at various places and power to change those election results. So you are seeing kind of like a response to that First Amendment argument from the indictment itself saying no, it goes beyond just saying things that might be false. Thats not what that is at issue here. Bret one person that made that last night is ben who talked about the First Amendment last night. Why is it that we go to these big moments and we, as a country go to our sides and look through two different prisms at two different diametrically opposed things . If this were less serious, i would be entertained by the idea that an indictment of this nature would require one to enter the mind of one donald trump to understand all of its workings, machinations and what he believed in certain moments. That is certainly something that im not capable of. Perhaps these lawyers are. But my own perspective on this is that we are going down a very dangerous road. We have seen in past elections, you know, many people who are on the losing side raise concerns about it. In ways that even, you know, rose to the level of different members of congress refusing to accept the results that came from different states, particularly ohio in 2004 that reaction to the 2000 election. Even in 2016 where we saw major figures going out there, including hosts on other networks begging the electors who choose differently than they were legally required to do so. I do not think that this is a healthy thing for a nation to do. I think it goes against everything that we understand about Freedom Of Speech and ultimately, this indictment is of a nature so much weaker than i think a lot of us expected that it really calls into Question Everything that the Department Of Justice is doing in ways that are only going to vindicate, to vinces point, a lot of people that do not believe its operating in the interest of the American People but that it is partisan in nature. Bret have you heard, vince, an effective pundit on the left who really supports this indictment make an effective argument on how it is structured . No. Because it seems like this is kind of what was always predestined. All of the left wing punditry we hear they always wanted trump arrested and he deserves it eventually we will get there somehow. They are kind of feeling their way through. I cant help but notice the calendar here. Every one of these indictments come down or superseding indictments from jack smith has always followed very bad news for joe biden. Whether it is the Bribery Allegation contained in the fbis fd 1023 day. Next day the maralago indictments dropped or, perhaps, its the collapse of the plea deal for hunter biden in that courtroom, the next day the superseding indictment is dropped. And then this week we get devon archers testimony about hunter biden and the biden familys finances, the next day you get the january 6th case. Its always the next day and i think people look at that and say that cant be a coincidence. Bret bret. We have already seen trump supporters, republicans in the house, especially, really zero in on the Department Of Justice as a place where they can kind of respond to some of these investigations, they have already threatened to cut funding for the Department Of Justice, for the fbi in particular. Especially for Special Counsel jack smith. We will continue to see those efforts pick up there. Beyond that, they can only do so much. They have issued their statements, they will continue to push this idea of a twotiered system of justice. This fits right into that narrative they have been building over the past several years that the Department Department is biased against President Trump.
