let's bring in our panel. host of the bill bennett show podcast. national political correspondent on national public radio and trace gallagher, former congresm south carolina. let's start with you. they are making the sales pitch. we just learned today that the president is going to hold a news conference next thursday. pretty rare for a news conference to be announced 9 days ahead of time. but that is what they are saying and they are kind of dealing with the instruction, they say, of what is in this bill. >> yeah, i mean, i guess the only reason to announce that eye of a time is it keeps people from asking about it between now and then. at some date in the future, he can refer to, it is not unique for politicians to want to kind of sell something that they had passed, particularly if there is money. and republicans, they don't need to talk about hitting deficits. they hadn't talked about it in about 8-10 years. what they do need to talk about is we can find it for pelosi's friends. we can buy this four democrat allies. how much did you get? how much out of this package did you, mr. or mrs. average american get? that is what, that and all of the extraneous things that they are going to be paying for. but if they talk about debt and deficit, somebody may ask them where they have been for the last eight years and i don't think they will like the answer. >> meantime, bill, this administration is dealing with the situation on the border. there are now some 13,000 migrant children unaccompanied in u.s. custody. >> the situation is not getting any better. to the degree that then people start moving into the u.s. we saw that there were identified terrorist who came over the border. housed 2,000 people at the convention center in dallas. people were around other parts of the country. this is a lot of trouble. the president needs to get there. but i guess he is not going. >> bret: yeah, that is what he said today. he is not going to go to the southern border. his secretary of homeland security, saying they are dealing with a number of different things and continues to say it's from his predecessors problems. yet, we talked about it many times about the messaging that this administration made as it came into office. >> yeah look, it's really hard to say don't come now, which is what the biden administration is saying, and at the same time, we are going to have a different more welcoming policy on immigration. those two things are contradicting each other and we are in this season, this is the spring. this is when you generally get more migrants at the border and this is a problem that they can blame it on the previous administration. but they are going to have to deal with it and fix it. they are trying to work with countries in south america and central america to get them to stop people from coming. but this is a problem that the biden administration is going to have to fix and right now they don't have an easy solution for it. i don't think it's that significant whether president biden actually goes to the border or not. he just has to stop this problem and get it under control. >> bret: yeah. trey, i want to turn topics not to capitol hill and all this talk about the filibuster. democrats seeming to say that they are going to go down a road that changes the rules of the senate. mitch mcconnell, reacting to that today. take a listen. >> today's filibuster has turned the world's most deliberate body into one of the world's most ineffectual bodies. it has become -- >> nobody serving in this chamber can even begin, can even begin to imagine what a completely scorched senate would look like. we want to just erase every single -- we would strengthen america with all kinds of conservative policies with zero, zero input from the other side. >> bret: so, senator mcconnell, trey, is making the line in the sand here. you go down this road, there is not going to be a lot like it's done in the senate. >> yeah, there are two points. if you go way back in history like two years, the democrats said this will destroy the senate and worse yet, the greatest of all, it will turn us into the house. it will just be an older version of the house and it will trample minority rights. that is what they said two years ago and now in a 50/50 senate, and this is the second point, 50/50 senates don't do transformational change. it's just not going to work. so, if they blow this up, i don't think they are going to change their mind. i really don't. but if they blow this thing up, then we might as well -- the senate is no different from the house. >> bret: there was a power-sharing agreement. if you remember jim jeffords switched parties and kind of changed the dynamics back then. this is definitely not a power-sharing agreement. this is, it seems like an effort to go down a one party road. >> yeah. listen, apart from the 1.9 trillion here, which they are selling trying to make people feel good about it, days of consequence and confrontation are coming. you saw that in the remark, the death grip. talking about the filibuster that way and then mitch mcconnell. remember, you have to have a vote to get a vote on the filibuster. it's, it's a complicated business. but throw out federal spending by 63. the senate is there. cool the passions. not the passions of the house. it is there to say they don't want to get rid of the filibuster. however, it has been reformed. mitch mcconnell got rid of the filibuster for supreme court justices. so, even though it takes 60 votes to pass a law, it only takes 51 votes to put somebody on the supreme court who will decide if that law is constitutional. reconciliation. yes, after harry reid changed the rule for cabinet secretaries. but reconciliation is a filibuster tweak. the need to get 60 votes. so, i can imagine that the filibuster is tweaked in the future. i don't think it is going to be locked up. >> bret: last thing, trey, and that is the infrastructure. it seems like it is going down this road. mitch mcconnell talked about it today as the trojan horse the democrats are going to pack a lot of things in there including raising taxes and then use the reconciliation. >> if they, with the border mess and if they also raise taxes, they will have written the best campaign commercial better than any republican could ever write. on infrastructure bills, those are typically bipartisan. when you start raising taxes after the year that most americans have had the last 12 months, you have just written a beautiful
