At the March 24 Jamestown Lions meeting, JaimeLee Cunningham introduced guest speakers Jennie Marks and Craig Thierer, directors of the Fort Seward Board. Marks talked about the history of the fort, saying it was in operation from 1872 to 1877. The main job of the men was to oversee the building of the railroad through Jamestown. Next year the fort will be celebrating its 150th anniversary.
In addition to having an interpretive center, work is being done to make Fort Seward a family destination. There are now 10 RV sites as well as sites for glamping and camping. Erection of playground equipment is planned for this spring. May 1, 9, 15 and 16 are dates designated for volunteer work from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Drinks, snacks and lunches will be provided. Anyone with questions on Fort Seward or who wishes to volunteer is asked to contact Marks at 269-0785.
