The Lee River was a torrent on Saturday at a popular swimming hole downstream of the dam site.
Floods were expected during the construction phase, so the dam was designed and built accordingly with a range of mitigation measures such as reinforcing in the rock fill to prevent it being washed away.
“The engineers and contractor have done very well here, and it’s gone to plan really,” Scott said, adding the dam was designed to overtop during construction.
Scott said an engineering geologist was checking the site on Monday, a “make-safe day” when the roads would be repaired and the area cleared in the hope of work resuming on Tuesday.
