Five-alarm fire in Lawrence sparked by careless disposal of smoking materials

A wind-driven fire in Lawrence that destroyed three homes and damaged three others on Easter Sunday night, causing more than $1 million in damages, was triggered by the improper disposal of smoking materials, fire officials said Wednesday.
The 5-alarm fire, which broke out around 6 p.m., originated in the carport attached to the back of 14 Saratoga St., according to a statement from the state fire marshalâs office.
