FirstEnergy fights consumer watchdog’s request for records on company’s internal investigation

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Despite a company pledge to provide greater transparency amid a federal corruption probe into the company’s activities in Ohio, FirstEnergy Corp. is fighting an attempt from a state consumer watchdog to get records about the company’s internal investigation into long-term misuse of ratepayer money.
The Ohio Consumers’ Counsel had issued a subpoena to the Akron-based company, with a Monday deadline, requesting records documenting:
How the company’s charitable arm awarded money in 2018 and 2019 and
An internal company investigation into possible improper spending, including a $4.3 million payment FirstEnergy made to a company tied to former Public Utilities Commission of Ohio Chair Sam Randazzo. Randazzo resigned the week the payment became public, and days after the FBI raided his Columbus home.
