First Time Home Much of the dialogue on immigrants and immigrant labor is about them, not from them. First Time Home addresses that disparity, offering the perspective of four young, second-generation immigrants and descendants of the Triqui culture of western Oaxaca who live in the U.S. The youth — Esmirna Librado, Noemi Librado Sanchez, Esmeralda Ventura, Heriberto Venturo — shot all the footage beginning in 2016. The film, which debuted in 2021, explores the young adults’ first trip from California and Washington to Mexico, which constitutes a different sense of “home.” Produced by Spokane native Seth M. Holmes, a Lewis & Clark High School graduate who’s now a medical doctor and anthropology professor at University of Southern California, First Time Home has won numerous awards including a 2022 Spotlight Film Award gold medal.
