A white-tailed deer from a Warren County hunting preserve has tested positive for chronic wasting disease, the first time the fatal ailment has been flagged in Pennsylvania’s northern tier.
The remaining deer were euthanized, and all tested negative for the disease. The preserve has quarantined the preserve for five years, the state Ag Department said Wednesday.
Contact tracing to determine any further exposure is in progress and may require additional quarantines.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission will create a new disease management area based on the detection. Hunters who kill deer in disease management areas may not transport the animals outside of the zone without first removing high-risk parts from the carcass.
