Fernando Lugo criticizes detention of opposition leader in Paraguay
Asuncion, Jan 29 (Prensa Latina) Former Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo on Friday described the detention of Authentic Radical Liberal Party leader Efrain Alegre, accused of alleged falsification of official documents, as a violation of the rule of law.
Alegre, who lost by less than 4 percent against President Mario Abdo Benitez in the 2018 general elections, was also charged with alleged irregularities to report on his party in the framework of the elections.
After visiting Alegre in preventive detention at the Specialized Group, Lugo noted that this measure is 'the setup of justice subjugated to a political power, where situations are invented to imprison people and condemn the opposition.'
