A political scandal that has ensnared a former state Senator from South Florida might lead to further investigation in Central Florida.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement plans to review information involving a so-called "ghost" candidate in the 2020 District 9 state Senate race Republican Jason Brodeur won in November 2020.
Brodeur, who represents part of Volusia County, narrowly defeated Democrat Patricia Sigman in the race. But a no-party-affiliation candidate, Jestine Iannotti, also entered the race.
Iannotti did no campaigning, but received help in the form of thousands of dollars of mailers sent to Democrat voters in the district. The money for those mailers came via political action committees that also helped fund two ghost candidates in senate races in South Florida.
