Given the potentially lifesaving shot in the arm. Its up to individual states to determine who gets the vaccine in what order, but initial doses are being given to Health Care Workers and the vulnerable in nursing homes. The most important breakthrough yet it in the battle against the virus, later well be talking to a doctor and expert about the remarkable speed with which these vaccines have been produced and what that tells us about how with might fight illness in the future. It doesnt, unfortunately, signal an early end to the crisis e. Its likely to be the summer of next year before enough of the u. S. Population is vaccinated for the risk of the disease finally to recede. So what do we do in the meantime . Well, many of our political leaders and experts believe the answer is more of the same, more social isolation, more staying home which, of course, means more ruin for many businesses, more pain and suffering for people already devastated by the lockdowns of this year. On monday new York Governor Andrew Cuomo and federal Infectious Diseases chief anthony i fauci delivered a somewhat ca mapper dialect with the message theres more misery e to come. The problem is thats going to come right up to the gunning of the christmas beginning of the christmas hanukkah potential surge. So you have a is surge upon a surge, and then before you can handle that, more people are going to travel over christmas, youre going to have more of those family and friend gatherings that you accurately said are an issue without substantial mitigation the middle of january can be a really dark time for us. Put us together, were like the modern day deniro and pacino. You can be whichever you want. You can be the deniro or pacino. Fauci e and cuomo. Ill give you who i love them both. [laughter] gerry its good that some people find it amusing. If you needed proof that for some people this has been an egoboosting exercise, you got it right there. Cuomo, by the way, on friday gave the order for all restaurants to suspend Indoor Dining in new york starting on monday. Meanwhile in new york city, that is. Meanwhile, in California Governor Gavin Newsom insisted his lockdown will go ahead despite rising anger in the state, even as he shed a few crocodile tears for the many californians his actions are destroying. Im deeply empathetic and deeply committed to advancing the cause of supporting our Small Businesses during this trying and challenging time. Gerry isnt it wonderful to know that hes so empathetic . Im sure and he and his friends love to express it over lavish dinners all the time. The governors empathy, however, wont save any jobs. Much of the economic damage to the country will be permanent, destroyed businesses, declining employment, ruined lives. But so, too, all the damage to the very principles that are the life blood of democracy. Everyone understands a Public Health emergency requires emergency measures, painful ones. But whats alarming is the way its been used as a mandate by authority figures, almost all of them with progressive agendas that go way beyond the immediate crisis, to place previously unimaginable restrictions on the way americans live. Cavalier, often arbitrary orders, many of which have little basis in science or data imposed but e people who often see themselves as not subject to their own jurisdiction. This isnt the democracy that america was founded to on. Its actually a form of tyranny. And if it goes on much longer, more and more americans are going to do what they did in the past, theyre going to revolt. Here with me to discuss all this are two Business Owners who have been standing up to these measures from authority, alan adams is the owner of paragon bar and grill, and lovita owns havens garden in minnesota. Thank you both for joining us. Thank you for having me. Gerry if i could start with you, tell us exactly whats happened with your business. Youve been taking on the governor of minnesota, i believe. Yes, i have. Well, he has been calling, harassing, sending people out, the Health Department to hut down my business and to threaten us that we cant open. And so i got a cease and desist order on wednesday saying that i have 72 hours to be closed. That happened at, like, 10 30 in the morning. I dont know if you know, but they had taken my license last wednesday. To this wednesday the state department came and gave me a cease and desist order at 10 45, and then at 2 30 we were still open. About 2 00 in the afternoon, i get a visit from my Health Department, and they reinstated my license. So, yeah, its just been an uphill battle. Gerry explain, if you would, what they said you had done wrong. Why were they taking away your license . What was that about . Yeah. They said that i was at a higher risk, you know, with giving people the coronavirus. So thats that i had violated the orders, the mandate, the unlawful and unconstitutional mandates of governor walz. Gerry because hed imposed limits on the number of people you could have in your restaurant . No, theres no limit. We cant have anyone at all. Were not allowed to be open. No indoor or outdoor dining, nothing. Gerry so completely shut down. I want to come back to you, but, alan, youre in northridge, california. Tell us what happened to you and what rules you supposedly were in breach of or the trouble that youve been having. Well, weve, we were just told to shut down after thanksgiving and close our doors. And they said basically it was because of covid rules. One of the hypocrisy things about it, you had our county supervisor vote no to keep restaurants open, and literally a couple hours later shes going down, meeting at her favorite restaurant, you know . And then you have our governor, gavin newsom, who shut all the small restaurants down and all the Small Businesses but yet continued to let the big stores operate, you knowing target, walmart and so on. Spending 80 million on billboards, you know, 80 million on bill bodies of signs that are on every buzz that you go into for the last nine months saying, you know, cover your face, wear a mask, wash your hands, practice social distancing, and hes spending the money on that. And so hes really, as you said in the intro, that he feels for small business. I just dont see it because he has no plan for Small Businesses. Gerry weve got to take a quick break,s but when we come back, i want to talk to you about what are the rules going on here. Stay with us, well be right back. At Fisher Investments, we do things differently and other Money Managers dont understand why. Because our way works great for us but not for your clients. Thats why were a fiduciary, obligated to put clients first. So, what do you provide . Cookie cutter portfolios . Nope. We tailor portfolios to our clients needs. But you do sell investments that earn you high commissions, right . We dont have those. So, whats in it for you . Our fees are structured so we do better when our clients do better. At Fisher Investments were clearly different. Thats why weve merged with sprint. Get more. Now its about to get even better. And as we work to integrate sprints network, our nationwide 5g keeps getting stronger. With the capacity and coverage to reach more people and places across the country. Who says you cant have it all. Now is the time for 5g. Now is the time to join tmobile. Before discovering nexium 24hr to treat her frequent heartburn, marie could only imagine enjoying freshly squeezed orange juice. Now no fruit is forbidden. Nexium 24hr stops acid before it starts for allday, allnight protection. Can you imagine 24 hours without heartburn . Gerry im back now with alan adams and lovita. If i may with you again, quickly, you said you got your license it it sounds as though youve been able to stand up to the governor, and youve had some success. Is that right . Do you sense more people might be willing to challenge some of these orders . Yes, i believe they are. We have a couple of ladies that are opening up, one opened last week, jane moss, and another ones opening up this wednesday, and businesses have been calling me saying what should we do. And im like, we need to open. We need to stand on the constitution, and we need to take our rights back. We need to come together and just open up. Gerry alan, is that something are there options to you in california . Again, this new instruction from the governor seems to be pretty strict. Is there any way around it, any way you can challenge it . Well, there are businesses that are opening up. And bottom line is that after a while, you have nothing to lose. To the threat of talking your licenses taking your licenses or taking your Liquor License or your Health Permit is sort of moot because were all going to be out of business. Were so far behind on our bills that we cant open up. There are businesses that are doing it, im contemplating it, but its just its hard. You dont know what to do right now. Its a very scary time. Gerry and i think one of the things that worries people, alan, as we we talked about at the beginning, is that these rules often seem so ash drawer. Some places can be open, some places can be closed. That surely represents some kind of a misuse of power if theyre not sticking to consistent rules. Thats something you can challenge. Yes, and thats true. I mean, if you look at it, im not sure what our other guest, the size of her place is, but mine, you know, if i had our outdoor dining, if we did 5075 covers, wood be having a great night, you know . Thats 5075 people coming through, having dinner, drinks and then were doing everything they ask us to do about sanitizing everything that they touch to where, you know, around the corner youve got a target, and youve got thousands of people going through. So it doesnt make a lot of sense to me as far as why i cant open and how im so dangerous, but then target okay. Gerry and lovita, briefly, if you would, what kind of support have you had from your community, from customers . Have they been very supportive . You would like to say theyve been so supportive. Actions are liberty. They reached out i reached out to them. All the people in the area have just been coming in, supporting me, serving me notes, calling me. Its just been really wonderful. Do you mind if i make one little end comment . He was saying hes not sure what to do . The truth is we all know what to do, and we need to open up. We need to stop waiting for governors to tell us what is right and whats wrong. We as americans know what to do. Its not just restaurants. I have a gymnastics gym, i had another owner who owns an indoor gun range, and theyre going after him, threatening him that he cannot open. Enough is enough. America needs to wake up. We need to stand together and open up and live our lives. Gerry cant thank you enough and wish you all the very best and exactly as you say, this cant be done. The damage thats being done is unimaginable. I really wish you both the best, hope youre able to function soon and able to get back to normal. Thanks very much for joining us. Up next, the First Americans could get theaccines as early as monday. Its happening at an unprecedented pace. But could we have had them even sooner in more on that next. When it comes to autism, finding the right words can be tough. Finding understanding doesnt have to be. Together, we can create a kinder, more inclusive world for the millions of people on the autism spectrum. Go to autismspeaks. Org gerry the Coronavirus Vaccine is in many ways a scientific marvel. Its less than a year from the moment the first covid cases were diagnosed to the moment the First Americans are going to be receiving the vaccine. Drugs like this take years to get approval, this one has gone through at warp speed. But has it . Or could we have done better . Could we have had a vaccine in place before this disease claimed so many lives and did so much damage . Our next guest is a scientist and physician whos worked in a wide range of medical fields including in developing vaccine. Dr. Peter hotes is the dean of at Baylor College of medicine and also author of preventing the next pandemic. Doctor, thank you for joining us. Thanks for having me. Gerry first of all, again, its we seem to have developed this vaccine in astonishingly quick time, less than a year from when these first cases were diagnosed. That does worry some people because its completely unusual. But you made the point that this vaccine process has been going on for much longer than that. Yeah. You hit it perfectly. You know, people are worrying, hey, should i get this vaccine, it was rushed, and it all sprang up out of nowhere over a period of a few months, and thats not really the case. Because what happened was in the, in george w. Bushs administration, the nih began a pretty Large Program of funding Coronavirus Vaccine research, and it came out of response in 2003 after the first sars. So we call covid19 sars 2. If you remember, it shut down the economy of toronto for a while. In response to that, the National Institutes of health realized that, you know, these are going to be big pandemic threats. So they launched a big program of Coronavirus Vaccines. All that work went into showing that the spike protein is the virus, and by now everyone has seen that cartoon with those spike proteins emanating around immaterial. And thats when we did all the work to show that the spike protein is the target for the vaccine, that if you induce neutralizing antibodies, you can make a successful vaccine, and a number of prototypes were being developed so when we got the sequence, a lot of it was plug and play. Meaning that we just needed to take our initial prototypes and adjust it specifically for this new coronavirus. And so it really builds on 17 years of research. And i think thats good for the American People the hear so they dont think this came out of nowhere. Gerry so its been around for a while. Does that also suggest to us that maybe we could have had a vaccine maybe even sooner, that we could is have had one available for use very early on in the stages of this, in the stages of this epidemic or even before that . Because i know you were working on very much of trying to get funding for a virus against these kind of for a vaccine against these kind of viruses some time ago, right . Yeah. Well, the idea there was, or okay, we saw sars in 2003. Then if you remember, the middle eastern respiratory syndrome came out of the Arabian Peninsula in 2012, and the writing was on the wall, were going to have a new pandemic every decade. So the idea was can we make a universal Coronavirus Vaccine, one where we dont have to fine tune and make a new one each time and always chase our tall. And so we our tail. To we and others had proposed to get support with this concept. Couldnt really get very far with it, and the concept is still valid. Now with covid19, you know whats going to happen, were going to have covid26 and covid32, and we need to start thinking about how to develop universal Coronavirus Vaccines gerry doctor, just very briefly, were running out of time, do you think that will happen now . Because the threat is now so career clear, that we will have these vaccines ready for the next one in. Well, that would be the hope. Well see how the donors and the funders move forward. I know the nih is prioritizing it, our u. S. Government certainly is because of the huge not only health threat, but also economic as you pointed out and Security Threat of this virus. Gerry my thanks very much, indeed, doctor. Thank you, a real honor. Gerry coming up, the hunter biden story. I know youre asking, i have no response. Its another smear campaign. Right up your alley. Gerry that was joe biden responding to a question about a New York Post story late in the Election Campaign concerning his son hunter and his connections to a Chinese Energy company. But then again, perhaps you dont recall. No one could blame you. That was the story that the Mainstream Media and Big Technology companies did everything in their power to crush. They acted like a protective shield for the democratic candidate in the closing days of the campaign, and it worked. They managed to get mr. Biden over the finishing lewin before that story could do him any harm. Now it seems safe. At least thats what they say to allow people to read and hear about hunter biden now. This week we learned that the president elects son is facing criminal investigation over tax issues. The investigation was sparked in part by reports of suspicious activity filed by a bank that handled foreign transactions related to biden. Its not known what the foreign transactions were or whether they were connected to the younger mr. Bidens involvement in that china deal. That was the one that the media didnt want you to know about. Insisting biden sr. Knew nothing about them, though this is challenged by hunters Business Partner at the time. Whats not in dispute is that the son of the next president of the United States has been peddling influence for years, often to powerful foreign entities. And heres the real irony in all this. The media and big tech tried to up press the story when it broke just before the election because it was supposedly a russian disinformation campaign. And to cover it, they said, would be to undermine u. S. National security. That was always completely bogus. In fact, the real concern should have been not about supposed russian attempts to influence the election, but whether there were chew news efforts to influence the next president of the United States chinese efforts. The media, of course, never let that story get a proper airing before the vote. So much for real democracy. Welsh thats it for us this week.
