As a matter of fact. As it closes it is closing lower, dragged down by renewed weakness today in the big tech stocks. Also energy was weak. So all of that, we will have in detail for you. The dow down about 400 points. Welcome to the show, everybody, im connell mcshane. Melissa wow. That was quite a press conference there. Im Melissa Francis and this is after the bell. The dow and the s p 500 closing down more than 1 after the biggest rally in at least two months. The tech selloff pushing the nasdaq deeper into the red after its largest gain since april. We have a lot of news to get to today. Fox Business Team coverage to cover it. Lauren simonetti following the markets. Blake burman is live at the white house. Hillary vaughn has latest on covid relief package. Kick it off with you, blake where all the action is now. Reporter we saw President Trump here as the closing bell hit and the topic again was tapes and conversations that the president had, 18 conversations, nine hours worth with reporter bob woodward whose book is to come out tomorrow. We saw the defense second day in a row, he said he did not want to panic as covid19 was coming. The question still remains as the president acknowledged he was playing it down, why would the president of the United States play down such a manner . In any event he did so not to try to panic the country. We heard democrats say this was lack of leadership, failed leadership. Chuck schumer saying at one point, weve had lying, ignoring the problem, misleading the American People, no leadership at a time when we desperately need. The back and forth on that continues with 53 days to go until the election as the president will now get aboard air force one shortly to head to the state of michigan, free land, michigan, saginaw city area. Look at state of michigan, there is a reason why joe biden was campaigning there yesterday. President trump will shortly Campaign Later this evening. 16 electoral votes up for grabs. The president won that by just. 2 last go around. The real clear politics average shows biden might be leading by a few percentage points. Speaking with officials at the trump campaign, i can tell you that the president is expected tonight to talk about the economy and contrast trade deals and trade vision between joe biden and himself. When you go to michigan the Auto Industry is front and certaintier. When the president talked about michigan, at top of the remarks, he didnt mention Auto Industry or manufacturing, but his first comments were about big 10 football. Many in that state are waiting for it to be played. The president injected himself in the middle of it all, well likely hear the president from that front as he heads to michigan later this evening. Back to you. Melissa well, football is starting. It is front of mind, blake, i have can see that, thank you. Lets go to Lauren Simonetti with the latest on the markets. Lauren. Lauren littles pull up the screen, melissa. It was ugly. The tech returned as we saw yesterday. The volatility is the name of the gain, the dow swinging 727 points, in the end down 405. It was wall streets fourth loss in might have days. This morning we got news another 184,000 people filed for unemployment, melissa. The positive two weeks one million. The negative is no help is on the way with lawmakers at a stalemate over additional benefits. The stopgap aid, that is ending soon. Not to mention, take a look here. 37. 6 of the workforce out of a job, since the pandemic first hit 25 weeks ago. Over 60 million filing for aid in all. Melissa, back to you. Melissa those are just staggering numbers. Well talk a little more what needs to be done to get more people back to work. Meantime, connell, over to you. Connell all right, the other big story today, melissa, congress, the stalemate there drags on. Senate democrats voted to block the republicans skinny covid19 relief bill that by the way includes enhanced Unemployment Benefits. Lets go to Hillary Vaughn in washington with details on all of that. Reporter Senate Democrats today rejecting a lastditch effort to get targeted relief to businesses, workers and schools as part of the Republicans Senate targeted covid relief. The democrats voted it down today. Here is what was in the bill. 300 a week in Unemployment Benefits through the end of december. The ability for Small Businesses to apply for second ppp loan. 105 billion for schools and child care providers to buy ppe. As well as cleaning supplies to get back open. Also Liability Protections for employers, Health Care Workers and facilities. But democrats balked at the bill because they say it didnt do enough. One Senate Democrat up for reelection, joe manchin in trumpfriendly West Virginia defended his no vote today, if i hadnt held out the last time Mitch Mcconnell tried to ram through a covid bill, West Virginia would not have 1. 25 billion in state and local funding. The easy thing would be to vote yes but the right thing to do put politics aside to do our job. Senator marco rubio believes any covid19 relief package is doomed before the election. Congress will not pass any covid19 relief before the election because the biggest reason why pelosi and gop will and trump will be blamed. That will help them win the white house an senate in november. Today House Speaker nancy pelosi says the gop wasnt skinny bill was not just skinny but emaciated. She thinks is open to getting a different covid relief package through. No, i think that, i think that mcconnell is being, cynical self by saying i will just put something on there, that will look like were trying to do something while we ignore the needs of the American People. Reporter some Senate Republicans today after democrats went on the record rejecting the relief bill think that that will inspire some House Democrats up for reelection in trump territory to push Speaker Pelosi to get to work and negotiate a relief package before november. Melissa well, at least her blowout looks fresh. Thanks, hillary. Here is bill mcgurn, wall street journal columnist. A Fox News Contributor as well. As we look at all these stories and back and forth, all i can think about number of people still out of work. The numbers we heard at the top that are really staggering. The only way to get people back to work is to get businesses up and running. Weve been doing research, all we can do is look online, look on yelp, seems half of the businesses still closed right now will end up being permanently closed. We clawed back almost half of the jobs that we lost. If you do that math, well end up with some people permanently unemployed but the more businesses we can get open sooner, you know the smaller that permanently unemployed number is going to be. How do we get there, bill . Well, i think for one thing we should Start Talking about it exactly the way you say. The biggest stimulus is getting the American Economy working again, getting businesses open. How can you expect the economy to fully recover when so many businesses are closed and so many people cant work . Again, i go through this, were always told were in it together. Were not in it together. Some of us are lucky. We can work from home. I go down my main street. I see all these people out of work around businesses really struggling. We should be emphasizing not even what congress can do but the need to open in smart and intelligent ways. We can do it. We can do this. There might have to be some restrictions but we should be getting a lot more of this economy back work. Melissa yeah. I mean, we have a graphic that shows in each industry, whether it is restaurants or shopping or its retail, which percentage is still closed and for most of the categories it is about a third of businesses are still closed which i thought was a sad but fascinating data point, just so you know where we stand. The only one where the majority, more than 50 are still closed is restaurants and retail and you look at new york, where all this pressure recently has pushed the governor to say that they can open at 25 capacity at the end of the month. Now you hear mayor bill de blasio is pushing back on that. He wants even stricker, more restrictions when our infection rate has been below 1 more than 30 days, why is it that these local Business Leaders dont understand that when they keep all these businesses closed they are hurting the poorest among us . They are hurting people who work for minimum wage losing a job temporarily, probably permanently. Why dont they care about the working poor . I have dont know. We dont see them as much. Again, a lot of people writing stories and covering this are people that still have jobs and are still getting full paychecks. I agree with you on the 25 . Im in new jersey. Were limited to 25 indoor capacity. This is nuts. How is a business supposed to keep going on 25 . My town is very restaurantheavy. I just think of the number of jobs and livelihoods each restaurant thats closed or limited represents. Again there is no substitute, there is no permanent relief until businesses are reopened and people can go back to work. Whatever the government does can be supplementary. Some of it can be helpful to people caught in a pinch not their own fault but the emphasis has to be on how do we get our places back open in a way that averts risk . Melissa yeah. When you look at the leaders all around the country who, you know, have gone overboard and a lot of places in these decisions where it has hurt all of these working people and Small Business owners around the country, we try to show people on the show, that every Small Business has a face. There is a family, there is a person that has risked everything for the American Dream to have a business, to try to make something bigger. Right. Melissa do these politicians, is it that theyre power mad, and they love sort of this control of keeping things closed . You do think it is for political reasons, you know, that theyre trying to hurt, do they really think theyre doing the right thing for the Community Even though the science doesnt back it up . Well, i think there is two things. Ive always thought that american liberalism, in its latestages today seems to be a lot about just bossing other people around, telling them what they can do, and what they cant do. I think in this case, in a lot of democratic enclaves, big cities and so forth, there is an incentive because theyre afraid of donald trump getting credit if the economy starts to function again. I think at least through november, a lot of these people are willing to sacrifice people who are less welloff to keep donald trump from getting elected and that is very sad. Melissa thats bleak. Bill mcgurn, thank you for coming on today. We appreciate it. Connell . Connell as we continue, melissa, the race for a treatment. Reporter connell, food and Drug Administration commissioner stephen hahn says he has complete faith in the career scientists will be approving or recommending approval of a advantages seen for the coronavirus. Melissa the battle for michigan heating up. President trump making a Campaign Stop in the Battle Ground state tonight with the state is tough one for the president to win a second time. This a day after the democratic opponent joe biden visited the state to unveil his tax plan. Fox news is live in the michigan with the latest. Reporter the crowd arrived in Early Morning hours for a 7 00 p. M. Address by the president , a rally in this airport hangar. Michigan was a narrow victory for President Trump in 2016. He carried the state by. 3 of 1 . Just 11,000 votes. It is shaping up to be a real battleground again with the mix of rural conservative voters, a liberal urban voters and suburban voters swinging foreeach side. Former Vice President biden was in town yesterday in the state. He says michigan is all important for his victory. He was sharply critical of President Trumps performance dealing with the coronavirus. Well experts say if he had acted just, just, one week sooner, 36,000 people would have been saved. His failure is not only cost lives, it sent our economy in a tailspin. It cost millions more in american livelihoods. This is a recession created by Donald Trumps negligence and he is unfit for this job as a consequence of it. Reporter the speech tonight the president is expected to focus on the economy, the campaign has been running ads here in michigan saying the economy is beginning to come back to life. Michigans economy was hit hard by covid19. Unemployment rate of 24 back in april. That is down to 8. 7 . Joe biden has a four point lead in real clear politics series of polls. Melissa, back to you. Melissa connell. Connell joined by trump 2020 Campaign Director of communications tim murtagh. As Steve Harrigan reported that joe biden was in michigan yesterday to talk about his tax plan and what have you, but led with the woodward book. You heard his comments in steves report. What would you say to hypothetically undecided michigan voter who after hearing what has been reported after last couple days might be troubled how the president did handle the coronavirus early on . I think americans have seen that the president has been out front and leading the country in the Coronavirus Crisis and in fact, one of the very early moves was to restrict travel from china to protect americans as much as he possibly could. If you remember at that time joe biden said that that move was xenophobic and fearmongering. We know that joe biden would not have restricted travel from china and the United States would be in a far worse position today than it actually is. Biden loves to go around and tell people he was warning everybody about the coronavirus back in january. Well if that is the case, why on february 28th tell everyone not to panic. Now is not the time to panic . Why did he continue holding Campaign Events and rallies like normal until the second week in march . The fact is president was on top of this from the very beginning, what he told the American People. At the same time he wanted people to remain calm. He said he could have caused a panic in speaking in other ways but he didnt. Part of his role as leader he believed was to try to keep people calm and keep them informed what the federal government was doing. That is what the has done. Connell one follow up on that. I do want to talk about the president and Vice President bidens economic plans especially as it relates to michigan. On the february 28th comments you referenced Vice President biden did go on to say right after saying everybody shouldnt panic, that the coronavirus is Serious Public Health challenge. Then there was this tweet, well put it up on the screen from march 19th interestingly enough, which is the same day the president spoke to bob woodward where the Vice President said, he was responding to a media story, words matter, donald trump used his to down play covid19, mislead the people. That was the same day that President Trump was speaking to bob woodward. What do you say to that . Well, sure the president has said, i just mentioned this, the president has said he viewed it as part of his role as president to keep people calm. Dr. Fauci just yesterday on fox news, in every single conversation when he was saying things to President Trump and when President Trump was saying things to dr. Fauci, then dr. Fauci would see the president speaking in public, all of those things were the same. There was never any discrepancy what they briefed the president on privately, then what the president went out and said publicly. If joe biden wants to latch on to this say somehow the president is lying, he is also calling dr. Fauci a liar. People are getting excited about this because it came in a package that had Bob Woodwards name on it. The fact is the president saying in public to the American People are exactly the same. He wanted people to remain calm. He kept americans informed what the federal government was doing to protect them from the coronavirus. Connell michigan on economics, in the polls at least, the president has been trailing joe biden. It has gotten a little bit closer in the average of the polls. Last media poll from detroit news, 4742 biden. Vice President Biden talked about higher taxes particularly on foreign income. Talking about tax breaks on domestic manufacturing. How does the president counter . Joe biden is raising Corporate Tax higher than it is in china, he would make it cheaper to do business in china than the United States which is a long track record for joe biden, appeasing china, arguing for their interest. I think you will hear the president talk about that. Joe biden argued strongly, with chinas entry into the world trade organization. That little manuever caused the United States 60,000 factories, and 3 million jobs. Today joe biden wants to raids taxes by 4 trillion. Voters know President Trump built the best economy once and doing it a second time while joe biden has terrible plans, a terrible track record with china. He voted for nafta. A local reporter in michigan asked him about the nafta vote, joe biden ininexplicably blamed it on president bush and nafta was law signed by bill clinton. George w. Bush didnt get into office seven years later. That was 1994. He doesnt have a good answer for nafta. He cant explain massive increase. He is bad for jobs and michigan and everywhere else for that matter. Connell well watch the president in that state in airport hangar in michigan. Melissa, back over to you. The owner of a new by restaurant anbar is hoping this is a lifeline that his business has needed over the past six months. Joining me is the owner of the airliner restaurant and bar in iowa city. Jim, tell us what these past six months have been like and now that there are students back, what are you seeing . Melissa, thank you for having us and this, the past six months has been the toughest six months we ever had in business. My wife and i have been partners for 16 years and the business has always been a consistent business. We are right across the street from the university of iowa, the hawkeyes. Were the oldest bar and restaurant, started in 1944. It has been a consistent business for 70 plus years and in the last six months weve been closed for three of the last six months. And at best the revenue of the business you would term has been lumpy at best. Were down 90 from our trailing, our consistent revenue. Melissa wow. That is a huge number. I know that the kids are back on campus. There was a tweet that someone put out of a lot of people on the sidewalk in front of your bar, and they were trying to shame the kids that were staying there too closely. How did you feel about that . Do you feel like Something Like that is your responsibility to patrol . What did you think of the person who tweeted it . What was the impact . Well, melissa, thanks for asking the question. I take this very seriously. Im a father of three children. Safety is so important to me with my kids. I care about these college kids. I care about every guest that comes in our building. I care about the staff. What we had was, this is a whole new uncharted area for us where we always policed the inside of the building and managed the risk inside of the building and on the outside of the building it is new to us to try to Police People outside of the building. We got caught in a situation where are they really our guests or are they people passing by . The quick one is, when the University Students came back three weeks ago, were blessed that people want to come to our business and the college kids were so excited to get out and be social. They hadnt seen people for so long because they had been quarantined. I think that the crowds gathered were on, were on the main strip right on the campus. So we have, we have taken some safety measures, i can tell you more if you would like. Melissa well, no, i mean my thought when i looked at the picture what are you supposed to do about that . Walk out there, get out a ruler, tell people theyre standing too close together . I mean, and the flipside of that is, that youre the one who is going to get shut down or going to get shamed or going to get in trouble. To me this really brings home the idea that Business Owners are put in the terrible spot sort of damned if you do, and damned if you dont. Youre trying to open to have your business, and stay in business. Your bar is an institution on campus. You dont know what is going on with the football season. Whether kids come back to campus an theyre able to stay. All of that has an such an impact on your family yet here is this thing i dont feel like you could possibly control. What does that feel like . There is a lot of stress. There is a lot of stress, business stress, and bills keep coming in, we have significant fixed costs like most businesses, from taxes to payroll, to rent, all these issues. So there is a lot of pressure here. The issue with the college kids, and university, i think there is a lot of people that have very, very good intentions. These are very complicated times right now to try to solve every issue. You dont see, you dont even see them coming up until theyre there. Melissa yeah. I also, i dont see a lot of data on how many of the College Students who get it, get seriously ill and go to the hospital. That is one of the Big Questions that i have is, you know, if theyre on campus and they infect each other, i understand why we dont want to send them home to their families to infect people with comorbidities. Maybe if you have a comorbidity maybe you shouldnt go to college but among the young, healthy kids i dont know how damaging this is. I would say real quickly, how long do you think you can hang on without opening up fully . I told a number of people this. I would lose less money if i would just close the doors and paid my fixed costs and taxes, i would lose less money but trying to manage a partiallyopen business where the demand is, is weak and staffing and food inventory and then, we have people that are quarantined from time to time on the staff. Then we have guests, people that are our customers, that are quarantined. So it is really the most challenging environment ive ever seen. Buff i do have staying power. I have quite a bit of staying power. Were committed to this property. Weve been doing it for 16 years. We plan on doing it a lot longer. My family owned the real estate since 1904. Were committed to this but it is very difficult situation. Melissa okay. Jim, our heart goes out to you. Best of luck. Thanks for coming on. We appreciate it. Thank you. It will take a long time to see the effects after economy shut down for 17 months. 17,000 fans go into arrowhead stadium. How much money would be spent that normally would be spent . Well see changes of hurt in money loss here in player contracts. Kansas city chiefs signed patrick mahomes, their star quarterback, a 10year deem, may of may be worth up to half a billion dollars. 503 million. How will teams play the players if money is not coming in. It is not tickets at the gate and concessions and parking, all other gameday matters. You look at broadcast deals. How are sponsors going to deal with sports . I dont know if you saw, connell, gallup poll came out showing unfavorable marks by pro sports how we feel about it. This is in relation to political matters that have come up. While the matters have importance and serious merit. American sports fans are speaking out, sports is one place. This is a safe place to keep other things out. Sports fans are not buying in so much to real serious matters into sports. Connell let me ask you a little bit more since you brought up the political question. One thing interesting about it, numbers and polling, the fan base of basketball, the nba is generally more liberal than the fan base and just from polling of football, of the nfl. So is that a Business Concern for the nfl, that their fan base will be less accepting of some social justice messaging, kneeling for the national anthem, that kind of thing that may take place in the nfl season . Connell, from what i saw in the gallup poll looked like numbers were consistent. Whether white, black, woman or man, greatest in age group, 55 years old. We saw a huge drop as far as interest and likability of sports in america. I dont know if this comes down to depending what background you are, whether or not the spending is there. The bottom line sports will be in for a tough time for sometime to come. There will be a change in landscape. Were thankful right now we have games to watch. Remember the movie titanic, right . The ship is going down and there up there on the top deck and theyre playing their instruments. Nobody sits and stops to watch them play. Were actually going to stop and watch, what was billed as a titanic like feel for seven months. Now were coming out of it. Today is amazing day, connell. Did you think we would get through this . We have a super sports equinox. Games tonight with the nfl, major league baseball, the nba, nhl, major league soccer, a college Football Game and Serena Williams in the u. S. Open semifinals. Connell we got a little bit of everything. That is with all the crazy scheduling does for us. I think we have a few more days coming up. Jared, always good to see you. Well watch football. Check your fantasy lineups. Connell we will, i know, i heard a lot of people are into that. A quick correction of a story aired earlier in the show. So thats why thats so popular. Really, the business doing very well, indeed. We folk to head pro here, tyler gosselin, heres what he had to say about why golf is so popular. Listen. Weve seen a big increase in the rounds that have been played by our members, and across the board people are playing a lot more golf. Thaw dont have the commuting time that they had, here at the club in scarsdale, were half an hour north of new york city, but that time still eats into peoples ability to i play golf. And so, melissa, i did a count of the number of rounds ive played this year, and i think im about 50 more. But ive got to tell you, that doesnt mean im scoring any better. What can i say . Back to you. [laughter] melissa gerri, thank you so much for that. Connell, its so funny because my husband carried his own golf clubs, he didnt have the push cart, and its tougher than it looks.
