Maria what did you think of the recent poll that said that when asked who people think their neighbor would vote for, 39 of them said, yeah, my neighbor would vote for donald trump sort of like asking for a friend. Im just trying to understand the polls better and ask you if youre buying these polls overall given that question just a week or so ago. I tell you here in the united republic of brooklyn, my neighbor is not voting for donald trump, thats for sure. We live in polarized times right now and i think part of the messaging that you saw last night. The president is running against Portland Oregon and running against looters and antifa and hugo chavez and socialism and there are some people who live there or live far away from from there and find scary. Im not sure we know our neighbors anymore in general. Theres reason to believe that we dont great job of forecasting models. Its a different situation this year. We know donald trump right now. Maria lets talk about the markets that will not quit. Futures up again, all three major indices with major gains yesterday, the dow jumping above 28,000 for the first time in six months, the s p 500 and nasdaq seeing record high closes. We had a major day yesterday. The market is up almost 200 points right now. Can we expect this market to continue surging . Well, i think were seeing a little bit better breadth than we have in the past. Overall its still the five stocks that dominate the headlines. Were getting an awful lot of new investors coming into the market, you see whats going on at robin hood, the number of accounts that are open, specifically the kind of stocks theyre buying. When youre thinking about apple and tesla, theyre really driving the market, really pushing the markets much higher than really they should be. I think in the short run weve got to be a little careful here. I think theyve gotten over their skis. Maria you want to sell into some rallies, dominic . Weve been trimming back. We did our first sale of equity this week, lowered our equity exposure by 5 . Im not predicting a major correction. 1 of the stocks in the s p 500 represent 25 of the overall weighting and every day the phone rings, should we be buying apple now or should we buy it after the split. Its just crazy, maria. You have to look at where the value of the market is. Look at the midcap sector of the s p 500, still negative about 6 for the year and the small cap sector of the s p still negative an average of 11 for the year. Theres value there. Its time to start rotating your portfolio. Sell a little bit of your winners and start accumulating some of the things that have not done as well. Maria all right. Next up, the storm threat for the gulf of mexico, we are watching these storms today, oil and gasoline surging to five month highs this week, around 82 of Oil Production suspended by midday yesterday in the gulf of mexico. Tropical storm laura expected to strengthen to a major hurricane so we could have even more impact. Phil, how do you see things in the oil of markets given what were seeing in the weather . I think this is the most significant challenge weve seen from these storms in many, many years because it isnt just one, maria, its two. First we have to shut down production for tropical depression now marco and now a possible cat 4 which means production in the gulf is going to be closed down more than in recent memory. The bigger concern i have right now is for gasoline prices. We have over a Million Barrels a day of Refining Capacity shut in because of these storms and the track of the storm is going right over refinery row. Theres a possibility that the refiners could be down for a period of time. That means higher gasoline prices and were already seeing it reflected in the um p already pump already. Its amazing how quickly the prices go up when prices start to get tight. Maria the blue chip swapping of out three components, apples four for one stock split will reduce the benchmark expo of sure to the information Technology Sector. This all happens on august 31st, sean. Weve got these stocks moving up this morning as a result. Because we know that when youre in the dow 30, it allows more those Money Managers that track the dow 30 will now be buying those stocks in the dow 30 of so its much more buying power which is setting the stocks up. Yeah. And so the effect of this is kind of a couple of things. Theres more money that tracks the s p 500 because its a little bit broader but apple reducing its exposure because of the split or dow reducing apples exposure because of their stock split will lower the weight and so what will likely what well likely see is a little more of the disconnect between the dow and s p 500 or the cothe dow and the nasdaq 10. It will lower the pe ratio which people are worried about. Apple is trading at 40 timessers earnings. That will have a minor effect of lowering overall pes which may make people a little more comfortable. For the markets to keep Going Forward from here, really we need two things to happen. We need to have the continued improvement and the pace of opening up the economy and then the second thing we need is the other 495 stocks in the s p 500 and the other 95 stocks in the, say, the nasdaq 100 to start picking up. You know, i was talking to a colleague yesterday and he said would you rather buy apple or American Airlines here. I own apple personally and im thinking maybe i might actually put a little American Airlines in my portfolio because if you think about American Airlines and you think lets say a twoyear time horizon, theres probably more upside in a name like American Airlines than there is a name like apple if we are able to open up the economy and if air travelers feel more comfortable about getting on the plane. Dagen these are so we know that bill de blasio hates the rich and the he just acts like that rich people dont pay taxes and dont basically support new york city. Okay of, we got that. I do also think he hates everybody because when you talk about restaurants and keeping restaurants closed for this long, youre talking about destroying the livelihoods of families. Youre talking about destroying jobs, permanently, for people who work in the front of the house, waiters, waitresses and people who work in kitchens across this city. It will be if we keep these restaurants closed and by the way, i want to point out, Cheryl Casone reported this on the news channel earlier, the infection rate, the number of positive tests coming back in new york state has been below 1 for 17 days in a row. There is no reason that these restaurants cant open in a safe way to ensure that they are around for months if not years to come. Maria this is a serious thing. They are not going to come back in some capacity. Jon hilsenrath, how do you see it . Jon well, i mean, new york has an especially big problem when it comes to restaurants because rents are s so high and taxes ae so high, you have to pack people closely together in new york restaurants to cover all your costs and that becomes a Health Hazard in a coronavirus era. So its a big problem. You you know, i think that weve learned as a country that we need to find some alternative to the very tight grip shutdowns that we did back in march and april. You know, one of the obvious alwayalternatives that seems tok is wearing masks. I think thats the kind of compromise the whole country needs to be making right now, especially in cities to try to get business going again without suffering the consequences of such a big shutdown. Going green, Fresh Produce making a big comeback, packing Grocery Store shelves, it is a huge rebound for farmers recently, destroying their harvest because of covid19 supply chain deplays. The uptick is positive. Its unclear if American Farmers are out of the woods just yet. My next guest is one of the countrys largest Fresh Produce growers, the owner or the book, the growing season. Sarah fry is with us now. Thank you so much for joining us. Good morning, maria. Thanks for having me. Maria you have such a great story in terms of building your business. I want to get to that. But first, tell me how things are going in terms of farming, how is business, the fresh vegetable, fruit juice market could be really more than an 8 billion business in the u. S. Over the next few years. Is that right . It is. It is. You know, the Restaurant Industry, as you know, has taken quite a hit and the Fresh Produce industry were actually losing about a billion dollars every single week in our industry. There are about 250,000 Fresh Produce farms across the country and those farms are really struggling right now. We need to get things, you know, back open. Maria what do farmers need right now, sarah . You know, farmers really they need their markets to open back up, they need that Restaurant Business to come back. I know from our own personal experience, we farm fresh fruits and vegetables in seven different states. Fortunately for fry farms, most of our business was heavily weighted grocery retail. So Companies Like walmart, kroger, publix, those stores and those retailers are doing fantastic. But on the beverage side of our business, you know, we do business with Great AmericanCompanies Like subway that provide fresh, very affordable food and so weve seen our beverage sales really decline since march. And theyre starting to come back and, you know, were really rooting for the franchisees of those stores to get back up and running. But we just need things to open back up. Maria and you juice sometimes the imperfect fruit that would otherwise be wasted, right . Tell me about your beverage business. We do. We do. So frida fry farms is best knows the nations largest pumpkin farm but which actually sell more watermelons than we do pumpkins, although its kind of a pumpkiny time of the year right now. We started out making watermelon juice on the farm. We would take imperfect melons, juice them on the farm and bottle that juice. Sama is the mother of all watermelons. Thats why we named our juice sama. Maria you sell more pumpkins than any other producer in the country right now. Do you expect any change in demand this year . And what about the governments aid . Was that a big gamechanger for the farmers . It wasnt necessarily helpful to us in our business, although some of the commodities that we grow are going to get a little bit of help here. I think watermelons just made the list. But we shipped thousands of loads of fresh fruits and vegetables beginning in march, i think we shipped like in q2 we shipped nearly 2,000 semi loads of fresh watermelon off our farm in florida and we kept going through covid. Obviously with worker safety being front and center and obviously the most important thing in our business and being able to continue. And we had to make a decision very early on when we were deciding how many acres of pumpkins to plant here in the midwest and one of the things that we had to take into consideration was are people still going to want to buy a pumpkin this year. Should we plant as many . We leaned in and we actually planted more pumpkins than we ever have in the past because i think pumpkins are a low ticket item that bring joy and happiness into peoples homes and, you know, pumpkins make people happy so i think we can all use a little bit more of that now. Maria youre right. You wrote a great memoir, the growing season, how i built a you new life and saved an american farm. Real quick, on building a new life, sarah. How did you do that . You know, maria, if youve had an opportunity to read the book, its really in my life i have the same philosophy that i have in business and thats how do you look through lifes imperfections and how do you look at challenges and overcome those challenges, how do you look for the good and find the greater purpose. Its no different than what we do with the ugly fruit and the Fresh Produce industry, when we take that fruit that might be visually imperfect and we turn it into delicious beverages or healthy ingredients. We find that fruits greater purpose. And in the book, the growing season, thats you know, its a memoir so its some very personal stories in the book about my life but the overall essence of the book is looking through the imperfections to find the good. The California Supreme Court overturning the death sentence of scott peterson. Cheryl casone has details. The court ruled significant errors were made in jury selection but they did uphold the murder conviction. Peterson was found guilty in 2004 of killing his pregnant wife, lacey. His lawyer said he hasnt told peterson about the ruling because of a covid19 outbreak at the prison where he is presiding. Top trade negotiators for the u. S. I think really what came through last night, the president said this sunday night on your network, he talked about the amazing potential of the American People and i think that was the theme last night. You think about nikki haleys story, you think about senator scotts story, his humble beginnings, now a United States senator, you think about herschel walkers life, think about the frontline healthcare workers, frontline First Responders that the president talked to at the white house, the hostages he met with, the amazing potential of the American People and the positive feel we got last night. I meant what i said in my speech that the Republican Party is the pro america party, the institutions, the values, the principles that make our country great. Thats what we need to defend. This president is doing that. Thats why i think hes going to get reelected. Maria at the same time, the speaker of the house, nancy pelosi, called the president as well as the republicans in congress yesterday, domestic enemies, enemies of the state. Did you see that . Yeah, that i mean, she has said a number of things that just make no sense that are just flatout wrong. This president is i think hes that rare individual who comes to this town and actually does what he told the American People he was going to do, thats what the American People so appreciate about him and i had that list of things we talked about. Take one example. Take putting the embassy in jerusalem. For as long as i can remember, every single president ial candidate in both parties say if you elect me i will put the embassy in jerusalem then they get elected and come up with a million reasons, the swamp gives them tons of reasons why they cant do it. This president did it. And the response and it worked out fine. But the speaker of the house criticizes the president for doing what he told the American People, that thats how frustrated, thats how the democrats have been out to get this president as you know, maria, since before he was even elected with the whole trump, russia investigation. So thats nothing new from her. It is so wrong. I think the American People see through it and like i said, i think theyre going to elect President Trump as the next president. Maria you went through it, first the russia collusion hoax and then the Mueller Investigation, the impeachment, you called it the fake impeachment. Youre right. They have been out to get him and take him down from day one. Now theres a Postal Service controversy, congressman. Walk us through this. Post of master general louis dejoy defending his management of the u. S. Postal service to the house yesterday amid concerns that cost cutting measures are jeopardizing the agencys ability to serve americans going into a president ial election. Whats at stake here . What the democrats are trying to do, its not me saying this, its the wall street journal, the latest Conspiracy Theory from the democrats. Theres 14 billion cash on hand, a 10 billion line of credit, what hes doing on collection boxes and sorting machines is nothing new. Hes doing nothing new. The democrats want to create chaos and confusion because they want to count ballots after election day. Thats what this is about. You saw what happened in new york. One congressional primary, actually the chairwoman of the committee, the sponsor of the democrats bill, caroline malone, her election was june 23rd. She wasnt declared the winner until six weeks later. New jersey primary, took four weeks to count the ballots after the election date. Iowa democrat caucuses, i dont know if we still know who won the democrat caucus for the president ial race. So the democrats want this chaos and confusion because i believe, and im convinced they know President Trump is going to win on election day but they want to keep counting ballots after election day. So thats what this is really about. They want to send out as many live ballots, mail out as many live ballots as they can around this country and then be counting after the election night, after election nights over. Thats what this is about. We need to call it for what it is. And but theyre attacking the post office for those reasons and thats whats scary to me. Thats why theyre getting so fired up. But again, in spite of all that, the president s going to win. I can just you can see it in ohio. He won big in ohio. I think its going to be even bigger this time. Maria so you dont buy the polls then . Because in the polls hes been lagging. You can feel it in our state. You see the american flags and trump signs all over the place, i was in junctiontown, across youngstown, across the state. Used to be you couldnt find republicans in the youngstown area. 350 people at this republican event. You feel the energy building. I think last night was a great kickoff in our convention. I feel that in ohio. I feel very good about our state. The president s out and about. Joe biden wont leave his home. The president was in wisconsin, minnesota, North Carolina in the last few days. Hes out and about, talking to the American People he cares so much about. Maria what are you going to do . Look, most people do not want a socialist agenda, most people do not want to see 4 trillion in tax increases. Youve got the right idea in terms of policy. But what are you going to do to stop cheating if there is cheating in terms of mailin voting, what about big tech . Congressional lawmakers investigating antirepublican speech, anticonservative bias at big tech, turning to amazon as well, congressman. What about the potential for cheating, whether its big tech or whether its mailin voting . What are you going to do . You draw attention to it. Thats all we can do at this point. Thats what we did yesterday on the hearing on the Postal Service. You draw attention to it, every single time big tech is censoring conservatives, you draw attention to it so American People understand whats going on. We have to look at legislative solutions. We cant do that with jerry nadler running the judiciary committee. We need to win back the house to accomplish some of those things. When they censor the president , at the same time twitter will allow a statement from the leader of iran, where he actually threatens the safety of american citizens, thats how ridiculous it has gotten. Because a lot of people look at you and they say, well, we wanted her to be the Vice President candidate. We no tha we know that it ise pence. But would you accept a job in the administration if the president does get a second term . Well, thats nothing that ive talked to the president about. Right now we want to see the president and Vice President pence get over the finish line in november. I think thats whats most important. But certainly any chance there is to serve our country, i want to do. All that nonsense about me and pence, hes a dear friend, hes done a great job. Hes been loyal to the president and the American People should be very proud. So, no, i think we have to get them over the finish line and whatever those two need from me or from anyone else, we want to continue our country moving in the right direction. But when joe biden speaks, he tries to tell people that hes a moderate. In fact, the Mainstream Media is talking about the party as if its a moderate. Kamala harris as well. So tell us why you believe that it is in fact a disaster and it is socialism, because thats not what he says when asked the question. Well, first of all, joe biden may have been a moderate a few decades ago. But i mean, you cant go and increase taxes on 82 of the americans when were coming out of a covid situation and say youre a moderate. You cant ask for all of those mandates based on aocs Green New Deal and say youre a moderate. You cant allow any conversation about socialism ever taking hold in america and claim to be a moderate. The truth is biden is going to be whoever Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and aoc tell him to be. You watch him how hes flipflopping on the issues. Hes taking a more progressive stance. Well, ive got to tell you that one of the biggest surprises when i got to the United Nations was literally how the obama, Biden Administration wanted to just buy their friends. Well, what we need is infrastructure plan to put people back to work do increase infrastructure that is very he laid out after he got nomination exactly what he will do i think real bipartisan support i worked capitol hill 20 years, you have members both parties saying that is kind of stimulus you need. And the the lurch to the left this seems like this keeps coming up he is trying to appear like a moderate but policies just dont say moderate . You cant run city with revenue going down deficits going up all the citizens leaving. And, i havent left permanently coming back i have kids in school in the city i want the city to recover but i dont see how physically happens every business closing many citizens are leaving. A good point you continue lower cost of living quickly what is going to happen first is all at the owners of all buildings are go bankrupt once 10,000 restaurants go out of business no restaurant is goings to immediately replace tenants land lords owners are going bankrupt the restaurants, owners going bankrupt. It seems if restaurants cant get Indoor Dining they cant get their business back they live by cash flow they will be out of business. They are not coming back. Seinfeld how much time do they actually spend in noshes during virus during looting during unrest number one, number two this actually goes to something Jon Hilsenrath was talking about you have a great repricing of rent of real estate new york city needs to get a lot cheaper, and soon to offset everything that people have to deal with.
