For retail. But first, lets take a look back at some of the big moments in this edition of the weeks talkers. Maria you were surveilled for a year, and youve never been charged with any crime. They never asked me one question which was based in any sense or, you know, could have implied even a crime. Maria what does the Democratic Party stand for . Maria, when you heard Bernie Sanders said last night if, because i know Bernie Sanders often is someone who likes to criticize, i want a living wage, i want to make sure that the American People have health care, i want to make sure we have a family medical leave act. Maria give me your take on the last two nights of the Democratic National convention. A lot of boring things and a lot of democratic drivel. Talking about unity. How about this . They dont seem that unified. A aoc is endorsing Bernie Sanders at the convention when its clear that joe bidens the nominee. Maria can you walk us through these executive orders and when people might actually see that money . I think once they begin making up those additional payments this week, maria, there have been reports the states couldnt do it, that it would take months. Thats just not true. Maria the Trump Administration says that chinese firms that failed to have u. S. Accounting practices should be delisted from the new york stock exchange. As we think about those changes, we just need to make sure that we recognize we cant take our position for granted. The Financial Capital of the world has moved from amsterdam to london and is now new york. Maria the democrat mayors and governors are not standing by the police. What the American People have have to understand is that these democratrun cities, they control the Police Departments in these cities. So if you elect a leftist mayor and they run the Police Department into the ground, then the criminals are going to be completely free to terrorize citizens. Maria question, it was quite the week. The democrats officially capping joe biden and Kamala Harris as the president ial ticket for the democrats at the National Convention this week. I sat down with Vice President mike pence to weigh in on the ticket as well as a potential debate coming up with senator harris. Obviously, i didnt get to watch a lot of it, but the parts that i saw over the course of the whole week painted a very grim picture of the united unitd states of america. It was very negative, very hostile. We heard, we heard the likes of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren talk about policy, but most of the convention was an ad hominem attack on the president of the United States. And last night in joe bidens address we heard a lot of platitudes. But if you read between the lines, you heard about joe bidens plan to raise taxes, increase regulation and take us back to all the same policies of the last administration that resulted in the slowest economic recovery since the great depression. And i believe were rejected by the American People in 2016. So im looking forward to next week, the republican National Convention. Were going to talk about what this president has done, rebuild our military, revive our economy, stand by all of our strong constitutional liberties, appointing conservatives to our courts, standing by Law Enforcement, standing for law and order, and were going to contrast that with joe biden and the Democratic Partys agenda driven by the radical left of higher taxes, socialized medicine, open borders, abortion on demand and continued calls to cut, defund, dissemble Law Enforcement thats driving violence in the streets of our major cities. Maria yeah. I mean, thats one point that ive been making, you didnt hear a word all week about the crime and vandalism and rioting going on in our big cities. You really also didnt hear a word about china. But they are blaming your administration for a underperformance in terms of handling covid. So let me can you about ask you about that. You are the head of the task force, you have been in the room leading this effort from day one, mr. Vice president. They say the Biggest Issue right now is the president having failed in his response to covid19. Can you speak to that . Whats your response to that . I couldnt be more proud of President Trumps leadership of the Coronavirus Response from day one. And you speak about china, joe biden never talked about china in his speech, but the coronavirus came from china. And when President Donald Trump, before the end of january, suspended all travel from china, joe biden said it was xenophobic. And for months and months, he criticized the president s steps in suspending all travel. The no president in American History had ever done it before. China is the second largest economy in the world. But President Donald Trump said were going to put the health of america first. And i can tell you, because of the president s action then and standing up the White House Coronavirus task force beginning in early february to develop a vaccine that were well on our way to developing even before the end of this year, reinventing testing, now were doing more than 800,000 tests a day, standing up an industrial effort on a wartime footing the likes of which we havent seen since world war ii to create ventilators and produce masks and goings and medical gowns and medical supplies. But, look, if we had done what joe biden wanted to do, we would not have had the tile to stand the time to stand up and martial the Extraordinary National response that i believe has saved hundreds of thousands of american lives. And if they want to take that debate over the next 7. 4 days to the american 74 days to the American People, i look forward to the chance. We grieve the loss of more than 170,000 americans, and any Family Member thats looking on this morning knows that youve always been in our hearts and always will be. But if wed have listened to joe biden and not suspended travel from china, i truly do believe wed have lost hundreds of thousands of more american lives because we wouldnt have had the time necessary to stand up the response that this president has led. Maria so let me ask you about Kamala Harris who you will be debating in the coming weeks. What are you expecting her line of attack to be . The california senator accepting the democratic nomination for Vice President earlier in the week, becoming the first woman of color on a u. S. President ial ticket. Let me tell you, she was an attack dog on biden during the democratic debate. Shes a prosecutor. Shes going to be tough. Shes probably going to be tough on you. What are you expecting when you go head to head with her in your Vice President ial debate . Well, i really look forward to debating senator harris. She is a california liberal. She had the most liberal record in the United States senate in 2019. But, look, i honestly believe that joe bidens selection of Kamala Harris just confirms everything President Trump and i have said all along, and that is that joe biden and the Democratic Party have been overtaken by the radical left. And it is remarkable to think in the midst of a Global Pandemic joe biden said the first thing he would do is raise tax on the american taxes on the American People by 4 trillion. He would impose a 2 the trillion version of the 2 trillion version of the green new deal. All the same Climate Change rhetoric that we heard before. And joe biden not long ago said that he would take all the tariffs off of china that this president has used to end the era of economic surrender. So i look forward to the debate with senator harris. Shes a skilled debater, but what im more looking forward to is 74 days of debating their team, their agenda versus the proven record of President Donald Trump. Maria my thanks to Vice President mike pence. Stay right here, Mohamed Elerian of allianz is going to geicos been helping people save money for over 75 years. Theyve really stood the test of time. The second half economic recovery in focus, while many are optimistic we we will see a vshaped recovery, a stimulus are plan, a potential second virus wave will play a factor. Joining me to talk about what to expect in the second half is allianz chief economic adviser mohamedal Mohamed Elerian. Thank you so much for being with us. Once again, that theme of lots of uncertainty in the face of recordsetting stock Market Performance is with us this week. Characterize the week that was and what do you see as the most compelling about the markets performance . Its a little bit like Charles Dickens the tale of two cities. Its the best of times. Once again, very strongly quiddity liquidity has pushed us higher. We seemed to be losing steam early in the recovery. The european pmi numbers disappointed, our own jobless claims, the initial number, went up. It was a big disappointment. Its, again, this huge disconnect and how should investors play it. Should they worry about the fundamentals or just trust thely quiddity technicals. And that puts most investors in a really tough spot for the second half of the year. Maria so are you worried . We did get the purchasing managers indexes in europe, and they were below estimates. You also have Angela Merkel and macron, Emmanuel Macron saying, look, were not going to shut down anymore, no more restrictions even though we are seeing the number of coronavirus cases rising in europe. So what do we know . We know that the vaccine will take time not just to produce, but to distribute. We also know that its been trick key to get people to behave consistently in a prohealth fashion. So the pendulums swinging, as you point out, between on the one hand feeling really good about getting the cases under control and then we get a relapse like were with seeing in europe. A lot will depend on what governments do. Andand in the u. S. In particula, the stalled relief bill is really important. I think that the pain is likely to be even more intense in the weeks ahead, and theres going to be a lot of focus on what capitol hill does. And its really important that capitol hill starts moving again, otherwise this big disconnect between a stalling economy and a booming stock market will prove unsustainable. Maria yeah. I mean, well see. Its sad to see politics getting involved in such an important topic where americans are waiting on whatever help that they can get. Then theres the Federal Reserve whos basically done everything including the kitchen sink to insure theres enough stimulus in the system. What did you make of the fed this week where we now understand that were going to have rock bottom Interest Rates in place until 2024 . Absolutely right. The fed has three messages for us all. One is the Economic Uncertainty is not just short term, its also medium term. And thats an important recognition that we may have scars that last longer than anybody would want. The second thing is, like you said, have no doubt we are here to support the economy. And thirdly, it said but having said that, were not ready yet to do even more extraordinary things. Were not ready for whats called the yield curve targeting or yield curve control where they targeted certain Interest Rates. Maria okay. Mohamed, its always a pleasure to see you. Thanks very much. Thank you, maria. A blockbuster quarter for walmart, crushing analyst expectations when it reported a 97 increase in ecommerce sales amid the coronavirus pandemic e. I spoke with the ceo, doug mcmillan, about the quarter as well as what he expects for the second half of the year. Take a listen. Customers have been responding kind of in waves as weve gone through the first and Second Quarter. It wont surprise you that they get really focused on things they needed to stock up to be at home for a long time at first. Over time as we got through the Second Quarter and stimulus checks come into play, we saw them buy things like laptops and tablets and Fishing Equipment and bicycles, things that were related to home decor because they were at home, talking about their environment, inside and outside the house we certainly saw them respond with what they were buying. And ecommerce in particular was very strong. Maria yeah. I love going through some of the sales lines at a walmart, because you really see what people are doing. You have board games and puzzles, construction all doing really well, sold enough puzzle boxes in the Second Quarter to fill two olympicsized pools. You saw a big jump in commerce sales in china as well as the United States. Tell me about whats going on digitally. Are you seeing a new wave of customers use ecommerce . I know just from my own usage, you know, were in this pandemic, and those companies that can, you know, can adapt with ecommerce are certainly among the winners, walmart among the leaderships there. Yeah. Ive been in retail for almost 30 years, and its really exciting to be part of a time when so many things can be done using technology. We can save customers time and expose them to so much more choice than we could previously. Our ecommerce assortments are broader as retailers, thats certainly true at walmart with what we sell first partyowned inventory as well as through our marketplace. So now they can pick up their phone, they can be at home and open their laptop, they can shop in so many different ways and have access to so many Different Things that its a lot of fun to be able to serve them in that way. And that phenomenon is happening around the world. Certainly happening here in the u. S. You know, you can use your app to do pickup at our stores, use your app to come have the product brought straight to your house. Obviously, come straight in the store and were learning how to use Technology Inside the stores in different ways to save you time. So i think it boils down to access to assortment and an ease of shopping here in the u. S. And around the world that people havent experienced before. Its happening in mexico, in canada, in china and india, all over the world. Maria well, youve also made some changes. Youve expanded the availability of delivery, puckup time slots pickup time slots about 30 since february in response to this health care crisis. I want to ask you how things have have changed at walmart because i guess the days of the material store counts are sort of, you know, behind largely. But youre redirecting capital. Talk to us about that and how youve changed priorities, doug. Yeah, maria, thats a great question because it drove a lot of change inside the company. We had to learn to work in different ways, to become more digital, to be put data to work in different ways, basically to create a seamless experience for customers. We dont want them to sense any difference as it relates to our brand whether theyre shopping inside a store, picking it up or having it delivered. All of those differences and channels that we might have talked about in the past need to be erased and taken away, and our teams been doing a great job doing that. The outcome is just this ease of shopping thats unique and different. In our case weve got so many stores to so close to customers around the country, it gives us a big advantage to be able to deliver quickly. Weve got an express Delivery Service in the United States that commits to delivering orders in less than two hours. Thats now in more than 2,000 stores. Were actually delivering a lot faster than two hours so far. Thats a great experience. And we believe thats something we can build on along with having great stores where you want to come in from time to time, stock up, experience whats new. Really we think this omni world of retailers will end up being a Winning Strategy over time. Maria how are you positioning walmart in the face of what seems like an economic cold war with china . Obviously, products, many are made in china. Youre able to pass on great cost savings to customers because theyre so much cheaper in china than elsewhere, and yet the president just sai yesterday hes done with china. Are you making changes . How are you positioning the company in the face of all of this . Well, its obviously a very important relationship, the relationship between the u. S. And china. We buy products out of china, but in the u. S. About twothirds of what we sell is made in the United States. And in addition to china, we buy goods from a lot of other countries. Mexico and canada are really good as is i would ya, vietnam india, vietnam. Mainly u. S. Sourced but we do have a distributed supply chain around the world. We also have stores, clubs and ecommerce investments in china, over 400 there. So since 1996 weve been able to invest in china, grow a business, serve customers there as we do in 27 countries around the world, and we think thats a positive. So its our hope that these countries will work together, this administration and in the years to come to find ways to have a collaborative relationship where we should. Maria my thanks to walmart ceo doug mcmillan. Dont go anywhere, more wall street right after this. We made usaa insurance for veterans like liz and mike. An army family who is always at the ready. Some people have been complaining for years that political conventions have steadily become rather stagemanaged affairs. A place where parties are supposed to debate the right way ahead for the country. This week the morphing into a scripted, choreographed infomercial was complete with this years Democratic National convention. It was a strange spectacle, a little like watching one of those telethons for some cause you dont want to support
