Hour doug mcmilan live, phil, but what do retail numbers tell you about where we are in the backdrop in the economy . Phil well, it tells us that the consumer is very strong. You have Savings Rates at extraordinarily high levels. So youve got plenty of dry prouder powder and many of the companies that positioned themselves with multichannel approach particularly with ecommerce approach are just crushing. The second issue, of course, is the risk of the election and and weve got that election coming up the beginning of november. Vice President Biden is leading big in the polls, but the polls are tightening and this is exactly the same pattern we saw in 2016 and election will be a lot tighter than the polls are currently suggesting but those would be the two biggest risks. I know him really well and that was an effective message, way better than some of the other things that we heard last night from sort of what i would call the usual suspects rounded up to go to zoom call and make their case as to why donald trump is so bad, but the fact is joe biden is the one the democrats have decided to nominate which they did last night and when it gets down to it, joe biden has people in his party that have already taken control of the steering wheel, they moved far to the left and if hes the president , taxes go up, border walls go down, mobs are going to be looked the other way when they are taking down cities and youre going to have a very different approach to things like china which you just discussed with your previous guest and theres going to be a very different attitude and people need to look at this in terms of the policy and not the personalities. I think kasich is just sad. Kasich was a great contributor to getting balanced budget. She obviously spoke in front of Lindsey Grahams committee but we are waiting for justice in the durham probe. Newt, do you think we will get accountability here, let me say that john brennan cant continues to dig in as his role in this whole spy situation around Trumps Campaign continues to be looked at. So what the governor has done in new jersey and i vote in new jersey, im in new jersey at the moment is to allow you to vote in person but also to send you a a ballot which you can submit by mail. If youre honest, youre not going to vote twice. If youre dishonest, you the opportunity to vote twice, voting twice is, of course, a felony meaning punishable by more than a year in jail but why the governor would do this prematurely when we had a primary here in july and people did stand on line and some did vote by absent ballot and some did vote by mail, why he sort of preempting this, i dont know, if its a prudential judgment on his part or political judgment on his part, however,i dont think the lawsuit will prevail because its premature. Were watching retail earnings, we have lowes and target beating expectations this morning, were expecting numbers from tjx and l brands. What do you see from the retail numbers weve got . We had home depot and walmart this week as well. Lowes reported this morning, maria, and it was phenomenal, beating on the top and bottom lines, revenue up 30 of. 1 year over year 30. 1 year over year. People are going on, theyre fixing their homes. People are staying home, theyre spending money and were seeing the fastest recession on record, five months from the bottom to the top. An absolutely Staggering Amount of liquidity in; correcte injece system. The u. S. Hasnt experienced money supply to this magnitude. The money is running lock step with global liquidity. Other markets arent keeping up. Japan hasnt seen a fresh high since 1989. And chinas still down 40 from their 2007 high. So the u. S. Is really leading the pack here. Hes going to raise taxes by 3 to 4 trillion, 4 trillion by independent calculations and Spending Plans run to at least 7. 4 trillion in spending. This according to the journal this morning. The 2020 election has not focused on a lot of the policies here. Weve been watching the Democratic National convention this week but still no Actual Solutions coming out of this. Investors meanwhile are bracing for what could be an uncertain time. Keith, whats your take on markets and investing going into election 2020 . Well, im extremely cautious. Youve got to be in to win all the way until Election Night but a biden effect is very real. I think it potentially, if hes elected, takes 35 off the top if traders get skittish, looking at a shift in how people are investing. For example, were going aggressively after thins that President Trump has moved, big tech is on the move, retail is on the move, consumer centric stocks are on the move. If bidens elected that all shifts. Maria yeah. Its true. I mean, well see what the priorities will be. Theyre not telling us, we havent had one policy proposal, not one, and we are in two days into it. Im sorry, you cant confuse having a plan with an actual plan. Thats the frustrating part. Maria right. But we know that part of his plans is raising taxes by 4 trillion. Hes not talking about it. Hes not talking about who gets hit. You would expect that its way more than just the top 1 or 10 . Then theres the china trade tensions, President Trump said yesterday hes cutting off talks entirely with china, amid the coronavirus pandemic. Jack, how does this impact markets at this point . Knowing that the markets have watched this fight get bigger and bigger between the United States and china as china continues its bad behavior. So, maria, its obviously incredibly important. As investors were making the assumption that politicians, both democratic and communist, are more about self preservation than ideology, meaning trump wants to get reelected, hes going to sound hawkish on china, bidens going to sound hawkish but i dont think well see this escalate. The trade talks, this was sort of routine between trade help lighlighthizer and lu ha. I dont think it will derail the rally were seeing in risk assets. Maria you want to put money to work in this market going into the second half, ben . I like moving money outside the u. S. Well, you know, certainly once biden speaks to the convention, he is going to talk about solutions. Look, were trying to lay out the foundation. What were trying to do as democrats is say, look, its not us versus them, its actually its the United States of america. Its not republicans versus democrats. Its americans and we are going to be working together and as you know joe biden took so many years in the senate, he is a creature of this institution that is working together with democrats and republicans and trying to find solutions. Maria i understand that and that all sounds great in terms of talking points, but the truth is, when you look at the proposals, the republicans versus democrats, its a very different agenda. So President Trump wants to lower taxes, he wants to cut regulation. Vice President Biden wants a tax hike that is pretty severe. He wants to raise taxes up to 4 trillion. Youve got this biden, Sanders Unity Task force recommendation which includes a 2 trillion green deal and a lot of ideas for big government, thats the opposite of what the Trump Administration is pushing. So why do you think that you now is the time to enact the biden proposals, knowing that we just had a sharp contraction in the economy, almost 33 . Weve got 30 million americans out of work right now. Do you believe now the time is right to raise taxes by 4 trillion, sir . Yeah, i think the time is now to Work Together as democrats and republicans and thats what joe bidens going to do. Look, we know that soon well hear the republican primaries, there are many things in the platform that the republicans passed and that the republicans have democrats have Different Things in the platform. The matter is, can you get some of the ideas from the platform, work out a consensus and get the job done. There are some things on the democrats platform that are probably not going to get done, just like there are some things in the republican primary that are not going to get done but can we get together in congress and work with the president and get things done. We want to make sure that education and healthcare are provided to americans that need that help. You know, when you look at job growth and i know youre going to disagree with me, over president ial terms, you will see that for example, when george bush was there, and i know george bush, when he was there, we were losing 800,000 jobs a month. Then we had the obama, Biden Administration and we had one of the biggest growths that we had. Again, look, were all you know, we want people to start working again but first youve got to find a balance. Take care of this pandemic issue and get rid of it and lets find a solution to this and then make sure that were open to open up our economy in a safe way. Its the way you know, we need to find a way of balancing the health of the individual and the health of the economy. Democrats want to have people back to work, we want to make sure. Look, ive been a Small Business owner before and i know what it is to pay taxes and have overhead. We want to make sure that our businesses get back to work but first lets fight this pandemic. Well, thats why i really wanted to speak with you this morning, congressman because i know that youre a former business person and that you understand the issues that a business faces but if your colleagues really wanted that to happen, why did they leave washington . A shortterm stimulus deal, where is it . I mean, now Speaker Pelosi is signaling that maybe democrats are willing to compromise on a deal with republicans but shes still at 3 trillion. Senate republicans offered their own 500 billion plan including unemployment expansion, Postal Service funding and Liability Protection for businesses, congressman. But when you start drilling down on where the pushback is and why they cant come out with a deal, it certainly feels like the democrats really dont want a deal in front of the election, really dont want the economy opening back to normal ahead of the election, they would rather have chaos all the time, even on the ground in certain cities youre not seeing democratic mayors come out and stop the violence, put law and order back in place. Why . Look, first of all, law and order, we believe in law and order of. Ive got three brothers, starting off with the sheriff, three brothers who are peace officers. Im a big believer of law and order. But, look, lets talk about the relief. Back in the middle of may we passed our proposal, the heroes act, back in may in the middle of may. Allie maria, look, i dont want to be a glass half empty all the time but we are at new highs in this economic reality that most people are facing, its very different than the highs of the market is experiencing. Everything that has been talked about this morning, uncertainty around the election, concern over relations with china, u. S. Dollar weakening, concern about whats going on in washington with lack of additional fiscal stimulus, to me all of that points to volatility and all of that points to continued upside for gold. Maria what about the individual Investor Survey, tell me where you see individuals today. This market has been on fire despite all the issues. Allie again, im glad you brought thunderstorm watch. We are talking about brought that up. We are talking about the tale of two cities. You have the walmarts of the world that have done ex straightforwarextraordinarily wp hundreds of percent as people take their stimulus check, spend time at home. On the other side, you dont have a lot of breadth in this market. What that means is that these fang plus stocks have been the ones that have taken us up and up and up whereas the rest of the market is sort of flat to down. That doesnt bode well for the future of the market and you see that in some of the survey data so. There was an Investor Survey that just came out, only 23 , less than a quarter of investors expect additional upside in the next six months. Now, if you look at history, when markets hit new highs like today, you tend to have a higher 12month return than average. So i think, again, there are plenty of ways to look at what you see in this market and be positive. There are also reasons to be cautious, stay invested, but make sure youre in the right names, get back of to the cyclicals and be diversified. Maria all right. Again, i mean, they have definitely pulled out a list of the biggest rhinos in government and put them there. I dont think anyone is going to say cindy mccain is going come and support trump, i dont think that the gop is looking to any of those people as thought leaders. I guess the only other person that they could roll out would be mitt romney to round out the diversity of democrats or republicans for biden but i dont think thats going to happen. But i imagine that part of the show is over. The media will continue to try to boost it as though its a real thing. The reality is, the republican base, conservatives, they see what donald trump has done. Theyve seen the unprecedented economic numbers that he was able to deliver.
