Market. Lets kick it off with blake. Reporter hi, there, melissa and connell this is the first time in a month, you have to go all the way back to march when the president left the white house for an official president ial event. He has been on the ground in phoenix, arizona. He has been there 45 minutes or so. He visiting a honeywell plant that pivoted to produce n95 masks. Were talking about arizona as well that state could potentially be up for grabs in the election in november. Here is the president , as he was leaving for washington talking about the upcoming trip. I am going there for two reasons. I love arizona. I have a lot of friend in arizona. I have had Great Success over the years in arizona. I will pay my respect foss for honeywell, one of the Great Companies that have done a fantastic job for us so i look forward to it. Reporter aboard air force one the president tweeted a list of items he would like to see as possible next step relief measures, writing in a tweet, you see the middle portion here, he says the elimination of sanctuary cities, payroll taxes and perhaps capitalgains taxes must be put on the table. Also lawsuit indemnification and business deductions for restaurants and entertainment. After emerging from a policy lunch, the Top Republican on capitol hill focused on one of those items. I think i can safely say for our team here, republican senate, majority, if there is any red line it is on litigation. The litigation epidemic has already begun. Reporter the white house by the way, melissa, connell, via the Vice President is acknowledging that the Coronavirus Task force might start to wind down here potentially at the end of the month, maybe even in the beginning of june. The Vice President saying theyre having conversations right now about phasing out the task force an handing over those responsiblities to differentage sis, potentially here in a few weeks time. Back to you. Melissa interesting, all right, blake, thank thank you. Lets go right now to lauren simonetti. Lauren just what blake said investor are looking at, reopening of the economy. Theyre looking at this month, even next as turning points, melissa in restarting the economy. That helps lift stocks for the second day. The dow didnt close above 24,000 but did it come close, half a percent on the day. Nasdaq up 1. 1 . Leadership we saw today, paralleled exactly what we saw yesterday. Energy spearheading the advance. Oil up five days in a row. Up 24, that is the longest winning streak since july. The industry is encouraged fundamentals are returning. Demand going up, supply going down, opec and others taking an estimated 14 million bears aday offline. All the stocks had been higher but the rally faded toward the end. Exxon and occidental closing in the red today. Megacap tech names powered market yesterday and much of the coronavirus pandemic. It happened today. Netflix did decline. Pfizer started a Coronavirus Vaccine trial in humans. That could be ready by september. Starbucks, theyre going to open 85 of u. S. Stores by the end of this week. Wayfair, the Online Furniture company, stay at home has been good for every single business they do business in. Stock was up big time today, 24 , up 40 the past two days. So overall investors are cheering this return to business although there will be some virus casualties. Hertz rental car, theyre working with creditors to come up with a financing strategy to stave off bankruptcy. That stock is down 16 . Norwegian, the cruise line, theyre seeking a cash infusion to stay afloat. Overall encouraged that business is getting back but it is not going to be business as usual. Guys, back to you. Melissa lauren, i love the way fair story. That is people second home looking at their surroundings, i hate that rug, i hate that couch. I have to do something about these curtains. No matter how tight the money is, they go to the discount place that has all the stuff and delivers it. Makes all kind of sense. Talk talk about the disney earnings. Were getting those in a few minutes. Yep. Melissa they have the sports, cruise lines, hammered movie theaters. On the other hand they have disney plus. Lauren theyre in the iras of the storm. They really are. Melissa no sooner i said that but those earnings, let me stop you, im so sorry. Theyre in. I took up all your time. Lets go to connell right now who does have those numbers. Sorry, lauren. Go ahead, mcconnell. Connell below expectations for the recent quarter, disney. 60 cents, six, zero, on adjusted basis with the street looking for 89 cents a share. Tough to put together estimates for any company less disney. Revenue 8. 01 billion is little above where the analysts had it, they were at 17. 9 billion. That is the most recent quarter for disney. That is the Second Quarter. Well look through anything we see in terms of an out look for the future which im sure will be difficult for disney to put together. A downgrade came in, that he was concerned about the Leverage Company taking on. Disney being built on shared group experiences. Says the company will be in trouble until were all comfortable getting back to shared group experiences. Not only theme parks. Espn, with no live sports has, you know, all but collapsed on the advertising side, and viewership side with the exception of the Michael Jordan documentary the last few weeks. Revenue better than expected at 18 billion plus. Stock is moving between gains and losses. Back over to you for now. Melissa thank you, connell. Lets bring in deion raboin axe sy es editor and gary kaltbaum. With amazon it made sense when you saw revenue up up bunch but for example, getting packages to people. I dont know how much sense it makes with disney though as you see them beat on revenue, parks are not closed, people not going to the movies, they are not taking cruises but theyre light on earnings. How do you sort that . That is a big question that hopefully bob iger will step in here. They brought him back in to be the executive chairman, is going to step in, knock this one out of the park because that is a big swing and a miss. Expectations for 86 cents a share on earnings. 60 is whoof, real bad. Revenue numbers, you wonder where that is going. They laid off 100,000 people. Theyre not paying folks. A lot of folks at the top took a haircut on the salaries. There is a bit of explaining to do on behalf of disney on the Earnings Call. Hopefully they have good answers to that because as you said the big miss on earnings combined with the revenue beat really doesnt make a lot of sense given the actions disney has taken thus far. Melissa gary, what do you think happened here . They have 50 million subscribers now to disney plus. They just signed on the uk as well as other European Countries in the last few weeks. I think that is whats going on here. But look the big story will be the parks as we head forward. In 2019, approximately 165 million visitors to the parks. That is not only admission but that would be ponchos when it is raining, the squirt guns when it is too hot out and those 13dollar turkey legs that they make a lot of money on. They need to the get parks open. I think were getting closer but what the capacity is going to be, im not too sure. Here in Central Florida i cant begin to tell you bad things are because tourism, just in Central Florida is a 75 billiondollar business with, i think 75 million visitors each year. So it is not soon enough, lets put it that way. Melissa yeah. Dion, let me ask you, it strikes me if there were ever a moment to buy disney it might be now. The stock is down 30 . I have never gone to a disney anything that hasnt been both packed and wildly overpriced. I mean whether youre buying food from them, going on a cruise, youre taking a tour, the value proposition, i guess, unless you can quantify joy, but if you look at you know, whether quality of the food or the quality of the hotel room compared to the price it seems like they must have built in a really significant margin. It doesnt hurt their business in general. I know were saying that we dont know when people will be comfortable going back out in crowds but i do not know. I just dont think that applies to disney. Do you think people with cruise fanatics are already booking cruises now given everything that has went on . Do you think this is maybe a big opportunity in disney . It could be. Lets not forget, disney is one of the companies that made a big bet on china and china is coming back online, getting folks back out into the economy with those lockdown orders expired or ended sooner than they did here in the u. S. It will have that revenue coming back online sooner than some of these other companies. They have also, as you president it out, they have got disney plus. That is one of the few things that isnt overpriced much doing that at 6. 99. Disney plus, hulu, espn plus bundle 12. 99, bargain shopping there, folks with netflix, maybe i will get netflix and this bundle. So i think youre definitely right. This could be a really big opportunity for folks to pick up disney. We arent seeing it in this earnings report. There is a lot of explaining to do why we have the big miss on even those particularly weak earnings expectations but this is definitely opportunity, but a lot of questions to answer on the Earnings Call today. Melissa yeah, okay. No, i dont want it to cloud my suggests here so i dont buy individual stocks. This one looks pretty appealing. I want to send it to connell with more details on this. Connell . Connell just add a couple things before we move on, melissa, trying to quantity tie what the impact of covid19 will be in terms of a dollar amount, saying impacts on its earnings across owl businesses will come out to as much as 1. 4 billion. Now most of that is in the operating income at the parks experiences, the products segment. They have already been impacted they say by about a billion but it sees further impact of about 1. 4 billion, again, trying, as might to quantify, what covid19 pandemic will mean. As we continue well have more on disney. Stock is up about 1 after those numbers. More on the pandemic. Speaking of numbers, were more than 3. 6 million cases confirmed of covid19 now worldwide. Nearly 1. 2 million here in the United States. There has been some concern about some states. Theyre seeing new cases on the rise, but testing is starting to improve. At least 7. 2 million tests distributed across the country, as local leaders grapple with safely reopening their economies. Well continue talking about that as we continue through the hour. In just a few minutes President Trump is set to speak at that honeywell facility. It is a honeywell mask facility in phoenix, arizona. Well bring you the president s comments as soon as they begin. In indiana however, theyre full steam ahead with much of the state moving on to phase two. Jeff flock live for us in chestertown, indiana. How are things there, jeff . Reporter trying to move on best they can. They are allowed, nonessential retail to open but the barbershop here in town in the chesterton. These guys openedded a day before they were allowed to. I can poke in my head. Theyre in phase two of the reopening in indiana. This is a great store. Ive been browsing in between time here. Jamie runs it. What is the name of the store, by the way. The name is in search of unique or iso unique. There is a lot of unique stuff here especially for an old guy like me. You, wide open, no masks, no nothing. This is like normal time . This is like normal for us. We do have Hand Sanitizer throughout the store. Were keeping our hands washed. Were keeping the counterdisinfected and keypad. Reporter do you worry at all as you go forward here . I mean indiana has a phased plan. We maybe put that up, in may start to reopen other things, like theaters and gyms, bars, nightclubs, by july 4th, indiana will be wide open . Yes, yes. I cant wait. It has been, it has been hard. It has been rough, seeing all the Small Businesses not really get a chance to apply for any of the funding or the loans. Or the grants. It has been very sad. And all of the time we were closed, i mean it was very hard to come in here to work on projects because it was such a heavy feeling a sad feeling of even being here. Reporter you think were going to be good Going Forward . I do. Reporter worried about a second wave if a lot of people get out there . No. They warned of that two weeks ago back on the 21st of ape and we stayed closed another two weeks, so you know, of, i think we hit the worst of it, i really have. Im not saying there is no virus but i think, you know, has a recovery rate that is you know, climbing more than the death rate. I think that gives us a lot of hope. Reporter jamie, i appreciate the time. Good luck to you as indiana reopens. I tell you, i hadnt been in a store in weeks, literally, connell. It is a good feeling to walk around, look at stuff, pick stuff up, look at it, just like the old days. We hope that is the way it stays. Connell there you go, a little normal sy coming back piece by piece. Interesting perspective, jeff flock. Melissa . Melissa all right. Back to the classroom. Miami Public Schools continuing with Distance Learning through the end of the school year but the district is now outlining plans to get students back in the classroom this fall. Joining me now is miamidade superintendent of schools alberto car vallow. Thanks so much for joining us. One of the Big Questions that teachers and parents have all across the country how do you get people to social distance at school . Seems like it is almost impossible given how many kids have to be there in a certain time in each class, teachers, hallways, all of that, how do you deal with that . Things, number one for the opportunity, melissa. How do you do it . Number one you develop community involve contingency plans based on conditions throughout the summer. We had Successful Transition from traditional teaching in schools to Distance Learning at the apex of covid19 with 100 of our students connected with attendance rates of 93 but im the first one to recognize the normalcy, routine, that schooling brings to lives of children is in the all our communities. That is even not talking about the economic necessity of having schooling. So we have developing contingency plans looking at number one reducing capacity on school buses. The possibility of temperature checks as appropriate. The appointment of a chief Health Officer for the school system. Also subdividing spaces in schools to allowing, to allow greater social distance between students. Maybe change the way we feed meals, breakfast and lunch, rather than bringing students into high concentration areas like the cafeteria, have the food distributed to classrooms, many other options, too, as you said correctly, increase social distancing in responsible ways that still allow for teaching and learning to take place. Melissa i dont want to run out of time. All of those things made sense to me. The only one was about the distance between the kids in the classroom. You have only half of them there at a time . Do you have that much space in your School District . I dont know any schools in new york, whether theyre expensive private schools or Public Schools that dont have classrooms at capacity. So we are, many of our schools are at capacity. That is why were looking at our physical space and looking at gyms, cafeterias, other assembly areas, possibly creating additional classrooms for greater social distancing beyond the typical classrooms that we have. That is what we are working on as we speak. Melissa yeah. I dont know, sounds good for me. My son could be up front and further from his friend. Sounds like an ideal learning environment as far as im concerned. Let me ask you about the idea of a lot of schools in our area are flirting with the idea going back to school early to make up for what was lost here but parents have to plan for that. How early could your district go back, and how soon do you feel like you have to tell the parents . Melissa that is extremely important question. We like to inform communities up front. I have already declared to the community and our school board our intent for two summer virtual sessions for students most at risk falling through the academic regression, what we refer to as the summer slide. We plan to assign virtual tutors and mentors to all kids may need additional cities assistance. Were looking bringing students back, 25 of our school system, based on academic performance two weeks earlier than the regular start of the school year. Were doing that right now before a regular start date of august. So we are sensitizing and preparing the community with advanced notice about that possibility because we do anticipate based on this unprecedented, historic possibility for an academic regression as a result of the summer slide, compounded by disruption to the Fourth Quarter of this school year that there will be thousands upon thousands of kids across america who actually will have lost ground. We want to catch them up, leading to next school year and into next school year. Melissa good for you. You sound very organized. Well check in with you to see how it is going. Thank you. Connell . Connell back now to our coverage of disney earnings. Melissa with a few other notes from the companys report. Stock still up slightly in afterhours trading. Theme park division, Second Quarter revenue in theme parks is 10 10 from this time a year ago. Doesnt sound like a huge drop considering all that happened, five billion dollars. Operating income in theme parks was down 58 . Disney as i said moments ago, estimated covid19 on impact all its businesses 1. 4 billion. Earnings well below expectations. Revenue was better than expected. This is the quarter that already ended that it is reporting. Were not getting much guidance of disney on the quarter were in which is the next reporting quarter, but disney is expected by analysts to lose money in this the current quarter. Expected to be much worse than the last quarter. There you go, the report out from disney. More to come. Melissa. Melissa all right. Possible signs of life in the economy. Melissa fox business alert. President trump about to tour a honeywell factory in arizona currently holding a roundtable discussion. Lets head over to jeff paul in phoenix with more on that. Jeff . Reporter yeah, melissa there are a few dozen or so Trump Supporters lined up here on the treat just outside of this honeywell facility where trump is inside right now. He is participating in a roundtable discussion concerning nativeamericans and the impact this coronavirus is having on them and their community throughout the state of arizona. Now President Trump really hasnt traveled anywhere over the past couple weeks. This is really his first major trip across the country. He is hoping to symbolize by coming to a factory making millions and millions of n95 masks he believes this country is ready to reopen. Now he will be meeting with some executives inside of the honeywell factory. He believes what theyre doing as part of their patriotic duty. Today, shortly before departing making his way to arizona the president was asked about the progress in the country of reopening and here is what he had to say. Our country wants to open. The governors, it is in their hands but our country wants to open. You see whats going on. They have to open. And, the people of our country should think of themselves as warriors. Reporter unlike the last time President Trump was here this is going to be a pretty short trip, just about two, 2 1 2 hours until he is wheels up and out of here. Last time there was a big rally, campaign event. That wont be happening this time. Were told anyone coming into contact with President Trump is getting a coronavirus test. Melissa . Melissa yeah i would think so. Jeff, thank you for that. Connell, over to you. Connell melissa were looking for signs of revival in our economy and we actually have some data that comes from apple maps that gives some insight into mobility trends, how were all moving around in a place mike new york city but also around the world here to discuss, brett larson, fox News Headlines 24 7 anchor. He is a tech guru, his subtitle we like to say. Bret, this is looking for some sort of a sign were all getting back, if you look, show you the first graph of the world, right . All these countries around the world including the United States but also you have sweden, uk and germany on there and how much people kind of looked up things on apple maps. It never really felt much in sweden, they didnt lock down. It fell off the cliff in other countries. Just the last part of the chart were starting to come back. So maybe some signs of confidence people are looking up directions on apple maps . I dont know. Right. It is encouraging. I actually think it is a fascinating piece of data that has apple has been sharing. We should note, as soon as people see plot points on a map, they think oh my gosh im being tracked. You are being tracked but the data apple is providing does not contain anyones personal information. It is a collection of the group as a whole so to speak. Its fascinating to watch. When you look at the graph across last several weeks or month 1 2 or so, you see it goes up and down, weekdays or weekends, based on walking, driving, using transit, and it nosedives around midmarch. What weve seen over the last week a lot of those data points are slowly starting to come back up. We saw in new york city the last 10 days, 10 more people a few weeks ago showing signs of life. Transit in new york city remains at historic low. It is down 84 . It stayed there pretty consistently from the middle of march, part of the problem is, Governor Cuomo has been up front about this in new york state, theyre just getting to a stage where they safely sanitize the subway cars. Shutting down subways overnight first time in 100 year history. These data points will be very important as we move forward because as a lot of states move to reopening it will give them a great birdseye view, a great overlook, are people paying attention to social distancing guidelines, are people staying home when theyre supposed to . When you overlay that with say a heat map, we start doing Contact Tracing with our smartphones well be really able to keep a closer iras on outbreaks and hopefully when Something Like that happens, state and local governments will be able to step in quickly so it doesnt get out of hand or out of the region, and start spreading to other areas. I really feel technology will really help us get back to work, get back to business, get the country reopened again. Connell wonder what governments think . In indiana, jeff flock reported from there theyre already on to phase two of some parts of their state. Some of the shops have not reopened. When they see data spike up, good, people are being more confident but i wonder like places like new york if we havent shifted any guide lines if it is a good or bad thing . Theyre taking a very slow approach here in new york and theyre also talking about keeping new york city extend ad little further until they really get it under control. I saw it earlier today mayor de blasio saying the infection rates dipped to the lowest point they have been all along, so a bit of promising news but you make a good point, this data will be helpful for businesses on the fence, saying, i dont wand to reopen my store, i dont want to pay my employees just yet, maybe there is not enough foot traffic, maybe there is not enough people out. This is the kind of information that will help them make these really critical decisions. Connell right, we knew theyre following us. People complain about that but this shows you can make use of some of these data points as well. Always good to see you, brett larson, thank you very much. Melissa. Melissa intensifying diplomatic fight. President trump doubling down on china with a new warning over the origins of the outbreak. Shortages of critical medications are emerging as a new covid19 problem amid a huge surge in demand. Allowing customers to socially distance on planes for a price. Starting on friday frontier passengers can pay an extra 39 to reserve, a quote, more room seat option, insuring that the middle seat next to them remains empty. The airline says 18 of the seats will be available on each flight from august 31st. Not many people are flying anyway. Interesting gamble. Melissa mr. Trump slamming chinas response to the coronavirus. Take a listen. What happened should never ever have happened. We will be reporting very definitely over a period of time. We want them to be transparent. We want to find out what happened so it never happens again. Melissa here now is retired fourstar general jack keane. He is a fox news senior strategic analyst. Sir, given your history, what do you think happened here . Obviously the government is privy to information we dont know now, we may never know but what is your best guess how this happened . Well we may never know the exact origin of it which is outrageous that china initially covered it up, tried to blame the United States about the u. S. Military going to the World Military games in wuhan back in october. There was no covid spread as a result of that. That was debunked. Now claiming that it is the socalled wet market in wuhan city as the origin. And obviously our government and particularly secretary pompeo said there is enormous evidence to indicate that it may have come from the lab. No one is saying it is intentional. No one is saying it had anything to do with a bio weapon or Something Like that but possibly some of the 1000 plus storage of viruses they have in there, that they do scientific work on. So that is a possibility. But, despite that the issue is scientists around the world wanted to come into china when they recognized there was humantohuman spread which the chinese initially denied and they would not permit those scientists to come. They even denied to them, melissa, the opportunity to share in the analysis by giving us some of the samples. Now this is something that is routinely done where there is disease impacted into the population that could grow into an epidemic, certainly a world pandemic. Scientists in our country get involved in this to try to help and to understand how best to fight it in our own country. China covered that up. When the media started to report on it, western media inside of china they threw them out. Then they brought in the w. H. O. As their mouthpiece to state unequivocally there is no humantohuman transfer, even, this was midjanuary, even though they knew there was going back into december. So yes, chinas policies here have been outrageous and i think it is actually criminal in the sense they permitted International Flights, knew they had an epidemic, they shut down all the flights inside of china but permitted International Flights all over the world, even from wuhan city knowing they were carrying that virus with them. I think given china had suffered economically, melissa, and they were going to face some contractions, they wanted the or countries in the world to go through that, particularly powerful countries like the United States and europe. Melissa wow. I mean that is a very serious charge coming from someone like you. You are always very measured in your blame and even speaking about peoples motives. You said criminal and that it even, given their slowdown they kind of wanted to spread the economic slowdown. How do you, as a Global Community, how do we respond to that . You know, folks are trying to say how do we make them pay . Is it that or if they have done something criminal and they cost lives, how do they pay for Something Like that . Well certainly there is a growing consensus in the international community, not complete, i mean there are some exceptions in western europe, at germany, france a couple of other nations as exceptions, the uk moving closer to our opinion, canada, some south american countries and africa, surprisingly all taking issue about what china has done because every country has thousands of people dealing with a pandemic, that the likely possibility that it could have prevented that from happening in terms of pandemic versus epidemic. There is huge strategic opportunity here to stitch together the community of nations and an International Response to china and hold them in a world of public opinion, accountable for what they have done. And you know, some people yawn when i say Something Like that, what does that mean . Well, understand this, public image, international and domestic means everything to the come communist chinese party. Why this massive Disinformation Campaign is on to push back so aggressively against this. They havent had a International Crisis of this proportion since Tiananmen Square in 1989 where they are being held now as a pariah on the International Stage and yes, if you can get an accounting in terms of financial retribution, if there is means to do that, a legal basis for it, i agree. Certainly some sanctions would be in place here, i think, not just unilaterally from the United States but from other countries in the world. I think, much of this, i think should be done as the crisis starts to wind down while everyone is focused on taking care of our people and reopening our economy. As things quiet down somewhat, i think that is the appropriate time to bring the community of nations together to discuss this. Melissa general jack keane, thank you. That comparison with the outrage in the Global Community over Tianamen Square is a useful one for us to think about Going Forward. Thank you for that. Appreciate it. Connell. Good talking to you, melissa. Connell all right, melissa, we talked a lot about companies that kind of shift gears and do Something Different in order to combat this crisis were in. In a moment we check in with one company in brooklyn, an Upholstery Company that makes masks. Speaking of the president , participating in a roundtable discussion, looks like its wrapping up. He will make a tour and make remarks and a speech there. Well continue to monitor that. Well be right back. Do these moves look familiar . Then you might have a condition called dry mouth. Shes confident, protected, her strength respected. Depend. The only thing stronger than us, is you. Back here after the bell, alert on President Trump. Were showing him in phoenix this hour. He is about to take a tour of this honeywell facility where he has been engaging in a roundtable discussion. He will talk about new capabilities that honeywell has to manufacture n95 masks. Now along similar lines here in new york, we have a brooklyn upholstery firm called stitch room, that started a new project called facemasks for our front lines. The company is coordinating with volunteers across the country, making facemaskses. Were joined by the founder, ella hall. It is good thing to watch, whether honeywell or company like yours, people shifting gears, almost like snapping your fingers, doing something completely different. Tell us how this project from your point of view came about, how did it start . First of all, thank you for having me. So in early march we started to see some nurses actually reaching out to us via social media because they know we have access to machinery and it is within our normal practice to be using sewing machines all the time, and a lot of them were letting us know that the hospitals that they were working at were very limited on ppe and they needed something to supplement the masks that they had. At their hospital facilities. So we, we thought, were hearing from several nurses, there must be many around the United States looking for masks. So lets shift our operation while business is slower around make masks to distribute them. That was early on. We realized we could do so much more with people. So we launched a platform that allows makers, anyone with a sewing machine who knows how to sew, makers with hospitals in need. Essentially how it works, hospitals register for a number of masks theyre looking for and then we through the makers that we have on our team, we will ship directly to the hospitals from the makers home. Connell so much that, that is interesting. One of the things im thinking about is, have you seen fluctuations in the last few weeks in demand . Im assuming when you first started everybody needed masks. Has that changed at all . It actually has been pretty consistent. It is ramping up a little more than we thought it would. I think because of more exposure and also shifted in different areas of the country. So new york, obviously was in the beginning, you know, hit really, really hard. That was the main focus. Now were starting to see smaller cities around the country that are in need. And, more facilities these days that have less access, like, dialysis clinics, rehab centers, Cancer Centers are kind of the focus right now whereas the bigger hospitals are getting the actual ppe they need but smaller locations are still looking for ppe, so this is helping them out a lot. Connell just impressive on a, on a bunch of different fronts, whether just humanitarian helping people and also from a business perspective, being able to adapt like that. Great stuff, ella.
