One small step for man. To be honest about it i just didnt want to go and let other guys to land for the first time. Why did we have more missions on the moon, to satisfy jfks mandate. Logically the world might thing that one was a fluke, apollo 13, nasa had gotten the idea that it was their job just to keep landing on the moon. Okay, i can see on window. Looking at beautiful view of earth. And wind in good shape. Im real pleased. Im kind of hopeful the high concept will be really good. Good deal. Neil sunday april 12th. Okay, standby. Neil out of nowhere an explosion. We have a problem here. Say again, please. We have a problem. Neil swagert might have been a meteorite. Negative. The crew reported. We may had pretty hard proceeded with the cautionate warning. Neil this wasnt on earth. 200,000 miles away. A little different. Yeah. Way different. It was touch and go, but there was nothing we could do but be came and try to figure out what we had. You have to have a positive attitude that okay, we have a problem and how do we solve it. Is there any kind of we have real problem or what . We are reading pressure in fuel cell 1. 13 on b cell pressure. What do you want to do . Open circuit . I thought to myself, why me, why when do go on apollo 12, or apollo 13 and for a little while i couldnt believe what was happening and then all of a sudden i said, well, it is me and it is now, so whats next . [inaudible] we are venturing out into space. Lets think of the kind of things we are vetting. Anything that seems unnormal . Look at the system. Okay. Neil unexplained explosion, mysterious leak from odyssey, demand service module, csm wasnt just their ride to the moon, it was their ride back. Lets make sure that we dont do anything thats going to blow our csm, electrical power with batteries or that it will cause us to lose the main fuel cell number 2. Neil you sounded so confident, particularly, you sounded so a lot of people said you didnt understand the situation. [laughter] okay, we want to keep and we want to have module system. We are in good shape if we need to get home. Lets solve the problem and not make it any worse. Neil solving the problem would bolster theme in houston. Concentrating on everything that they are dependent because nothing we can do about that. There was nothing we could do. We could have panicked about ten minutes and bounced off the walls and we would be right back where we started. Call in your backup to see if we can get more brain power . We have one here. I was home, i was backup crew. I recall it was about 9 00, 10 00 oclock at night, texas time and john young called me and said they have a problem, some explosion. We have to go into Mission Control and i got dressed up and within 30 minutes i was in Mission Control with john and ken mattingly. Okay. Back to you. Go ahead. [inaudible] we can do that on fuel cell number 1. Lets make sure we dont blow the whole mission. Neil nobody knew how bad the situation was but they were about to find out. We had a problem. We dont know the cause of the problem. Weve lost two fuel cells. I hate to put it that way, but i dont know why we lost them. Neil on top of that, they didnt know what was leaking leg from the ship. I tell you what, gnc can you find out what we are getting so we can see if we can backtrack . Neil Mission Control figured it out it was liquid oxygen. It was at 297. When i looked at control panel and looked at the one of the gauges of the fuel tanks, one of them read zero and the other one the needle was going down. Neil did you ever thought that i might die . Did you really . When we realized after we saw the oxygen neil what did you think would happen to you . Suffocate . I realized very quickly that shortly i would be out of oxygen in the command module and things took a drastic turn. Weve had the lunar module and had power and the batteries and haddocks had oxygen. We need to get back home. Neil it was clear they did need to get back home and the mission to the moon was over, scrap, their new mission about to begin. somber music this is an urgent message from the International Fellowship of christians and jews. There is an emergency food crisis for elderly Holocaust Survivors in the former soviet union. This is a fight against time. What i pray is that you wont turn your eyes but you will look at their suffering and your heart will be changed. [presenter] with your gift of just 25 we can rush an emergency survival package to help one desperate elderly person for a month. Call right now. Think about getting in the limb or using the lim system. If not we were going to transmit as long as we could back and give all the incidents of what the situation was and our thoughts on what the problem was so that the people, if we never got back home again the people would have some idea of what what to do to correct few future flight. I want to get you guys minimum power in the lims. We had to rescue them and bring them back. Being the two senior lunar module and command module pilot pilots, we went to simulators to try to do in simulators had to do to get them home. Neil nasa calculated the better option was to continue to the moon, go around it and slingshot to earth. We have to go around the the moon if we get back if we will use the engine. You would have enough capability with the engine but we dont use that now so we have to go to the backside of the moon and come back. Neil the crew needed to manually tweak approach to the moon. If they messed up they could end up lost in space. So that was a challenge, getting them back on a trajectory that would whip them around the money and free return and sling them back to earth for reentry. My role was assimilator along with others and we took turns to get them back on free return, we developed that in a simulator. Neil pulling off the free return burn required all 3 crew members to act in concert with exact precision. Swagger counted off seconds. Haise handled the maneuver. Looking good. Neil as aquarius stepped the moon, he said goodbye. I looked quite over and said its going to be a long time before someone else is up here. [inaudible] unfortunately instead of the talk on my radio it was on it was automatically being transmitted all the way down to the earth and got in Mission Control, Mission Control heard that and the pr people, no, what he really meant was neil what he meant to say. [laughter] neil once around moon the crew had execute to line with earth. Go for the burn, go for the burn. Go for the burn. Guys okay . We are okay. 40 . Houston, youre looking good. Roger. Shutdown. Valves are shut own. That was a good burn. Understand. So that was the first get them back on free return, then start understanding how we can make this stuff last to get us back and we had a vehicle that we were depending on, the lunar module that was made for two guys for 3 days and then we got 3 guys for 4 days. Neil the numbers didnt add up for charlie duke. How do you make it last . I said we dont have enough, oxygen, electrical power, those kind of consumables to get them back. I said we are not going to make it. Its all running out 24 hours before we got back. When we first opened our doors, it didnt take us long to realize. We werent in the car business. At lexus, we were in the people business. We needed to be helpful. Respectful. And compassionate. To treat people like guests. Its what we all signed up for. And now when people need this most, we will do what weve always done. Take care of people first. The rest will follow. Robinwithout the commission fees. We started in the simulator powering based on the suggestions and the recommendations of the team that was monitoring those systems. And i asked for a reconfirmation because when you do that its irreversible, shutting things down. Neil to conserve electric power, Mission Control had the crew shut down all but the vital Life Sustaining systems. The temperature dropped to 38degrees. It was a very variable icebox. [inaudible] okay. They were freezing to death. Neil the astronauts cut water to 6ounces a day. Lost 14 pounds. Neil were you dehydrated getting home . Well, a lot to have water had frozen. Neil right. We finally getting water back through body heat and i didnt realize i lost 13 pounds and i guess i was all charged up and, you know, hardly slept. Neil little sleep as well in Mission Control, one life or death problem after another and zero margin for error. It became lets dont make a mistake and do something stupid that would foul up the whole mission, so my focus went to make sure everything we do in Mission Control and every procedure we sent up to them it has no mistakes in it. We tried to simulate virtually everything that weve had the crew the nonnormal that theyve done and most everything that weve been able to run on the simulator prior to passing it up to new details. We will continue to do that. My attitude changed from we are not going to make it to, yeah, we have enough stuff and if we dont make mistakes in our planning and execution of the plan, then we are going to make it back. I think spacecraft in excellent shape and fully capable of getting the crew back. I think as we have found before we put spacecraft to a test. Its always done much more than it was guarantied to do. Neil lovell, swigert and haise was pushing and three was the crowd and before the day was up the cartridges that removed carbon dioxide, they were sputtering out. One would stop work. The astronauts would suffocate. Mission control tried to assure levels it would somehow some way come up with a solution overnight. Go to sleep. Thinking about the valve. Roger. We are watching for you. Neil what did you tell your family, your wife at the time . Im sure shes panicking. How did you reassure her . There was no way i just had to, she listened to the underground transcripts. Neil they didnt let family members come on . But then, again, this is Risky Business and its still a risky. Neil wednesday april 15th from midnight to mornings inia engineers nasa engineers brainstormed the oxygen problem, clear the co2 accumulating in the lunar module. In a Mission Control work room the team with contraption and might do the trip if the astronauts could build wasnt one up in space. Step by Step Assembly instructions. Okay, jim, the way i thought it might be best to do it would be to have you gather the equipment and let us talk you through the procedure while you do it, maybe you could give jack the head set and and get the equipment together and talk through neil the astronauts are ready for scavenger hunt. Okay, i think the equipment will be right side canisters. [inaudible] the two lcts because we are going to use the bags from the lcts and one one card, one e of the card board cards that you will cut off. Neil they had the materials ready to go. First, Mission Control passed onto swigert good news from the irs. Okay, jack, did i ever tell you that [inaudible] i think i think [inaudible] neil then Mission Control and the astronauts built the device that they hope would work. Be careful. Neil they doved it the mailbox. Okay, lithium hydroxide canisters. Neil it required countless [inaudible] okay. Jack, next step is to get the eba card and use it to form an arch over the tap of the canister. I got the idea. Let me okay, jack. The next step is to stop up the bypass hole, the hole in the center of the bottom of the canister, we dont want to bypass the flow. Okay. The bag over the canister, bottom of the bag. [inaudible] okay. Now theres probably a couple excess bags around the bottom of the canister. To prevent this from sucking in against the bottom screen we would like you to turn that off with the scissors. Neil liked like science fair. [inaudible] okay. Neil but the mailbox delivered. Okay. [inaudible] neil deadly co2 levels receded. We got smarter and smatter and then thicks were looking real good. We are about 70 hours from home and we think we have the situation in control. Good work. We have plan for caring tout rest of the mission, but theres going to be in relaxation at all as far as that goes from now weve always had villains to face. Neil thursday april 16th at apollo 13 approached earth the crew carefully with checklist to reenter atmosphere and slash down in the pacific ocean. I will scramble up and close the left hatch, making sure the valve is open. Neil key maneuver had leading aquarius an back into odyssey and hope the module would fire back. Dont forget to close the command module head on the way in. Closed before i get up there. Read out of what it was up there . Yeah, we are getting 45 to 46degrees. Now you see why we call it the refrigerator. Is it snowing in the command module yet . Youll have some time in the beach of samoa to thaw it out after this experience. Are the flowers blooming . Not yet. Still must be winter. Yeah, doubt theyll be blooming even saturday when you return. Neil friday april 17th, apollo 13 was ready to come home. Its almost comfortable. [inaudible] neil one last knuckle maneuver, the astronauts ignite system and level of entry knowing even a small miscalculation would result in catastrophic failure. Ignition. Looks good. You can shut down. Hang in there. It wont be long. Neil the public shown interest in the moon shots but no longer, not now, the world waited and prayed for the astronauts safety. The astronauts will come back safe. If i may be serious for one moment and ask the entire audience for a moment of prayer for the crew men of the apollo 13.
