>> well, look, i think this has been an incredible turn of events. i think that the democrats expected that the pressure would be on republican senators to cave about witnesses. now today the pressure is going to be on democratic senators whether or not to go against impeachment because if the president's at 49 nationally, that means he's in the mid-50s in swing states. this is a totally unexpected event here that impeachment has really boomeranged. i have warned against impeachment both now and 20 years ago, that unless you're going to take the president out which they never had a chance, the boomerang here can really be severe and i think we're seeing that now. look, there are a lot of twists and turns that come between now and the actual presidential race, but there's no question that there's a boomerang right now. dagen: karl rove actually called that weeks ago. he said this is going to be about the democrats voting to acquit, not the republicans voting to convict on impeachment. but you see democrats front and center, nancy pelosi last night, who have -- whose minds are rattled, who are deafened and blinded by their hatred of this president. you would think they were better politicians than that. >> the state of the union is a moment to reach out, it's the super bowl of politics, it gets a 40, 50 million person audience. you want to be appearing to swing voters that you're really in the one event where all the branches of the government get together, that you're l actually promoting harmony and let the opponent seem like he or she is promoting disharmony and so, therefore, it was a useless political gesture, although it's going to get millions of views online, that's for sure. maria: what i'm really trying to understand is what you think is behind the hatred, mark. because, look, you and and i, e both talked about what went on in 2016, how they tried to frame him, there were informants, there was wiretapping, criminality at the sa the fisa . there's ukraine, there's brett cav you gnaw, all this -- kavanaugh, all this stuff, nonstop resist, nonstop hate, even in the results that he's bringing in. what do you think is behind it?
