Said that they would finish the wall by 2021, but now the governments top border official says, not so so fast. One border sheriff reacts. Hello, good evening, im blake burman in for elizabeth macdonald. The evening edit starts right now. Else to begin other than your with money and the markets. It was another record close this evening for the dow, and for the fifth friday in a row we can say the s p 500 notched another weekly gain. The market continues to rally into the end of 2019, so we kick things off with gerri willis on the floor of the new york stock exchange. Reporter it was a strong week for stocks, but they stumbled into the close here. Looks like santa may be leaving the building. We got a new record high for the dow, the 22nd of the year, up 23 points. The s p virtually flat. So no record close there, and the nasdaq did not make a new record close, though it was above that allimportant 9,000 level. Listen to the s p 500 and what its managed to accomplish this year. The biggest gain in six years, up 299 . The average annual 29 . The average annual gain Something Like 12. 8 . And good news for workers. Wages rising at their quickest pace in more than a decade, that according to the Federal Reserve bank of atlanta. The bottom 25 of earners seeing wages rise 4. 5 in november, an important metric for the upcoming election. Blake, back to you. Blake gerri willis on the floor of the new york stock exchange, thank you. So what might we expect as we are just about to close out 2019 and, of course, look ahead to the start of 2020 . Donald lumskin joins us this evening. Hello, good evening. Great to be here. Blake so december has been roaring. Weve got what seems to be a santa claus rally still kind of going to end the year. Whats going to stop this . Well, they say a bull market climbs a wall of worry. Weve had a lot to worry about in 2019. Maybe in 2020 we dont have enough to worry about. And almost the worst bear case i could make, but i emphasize almost. We do have one major risk event, and were not going to get through it until the end of next year, and that is the election. There are some people who want to be president now who arent donald trump who have some very, very dangerously stupid economic ideas. And if one of those slips in and gets some of those ideas implemented, were going to run the whole trump bull market in reverse, and you are not going to like it. Blake i almost jumped in because i thought you were going to say whether there was a stumble with the u. S. And china and trade. That was the worry all year of 2019, potentially this phase one signing next month. Is that worry behind in obviously, the election is the biggest thing out there, but do you still gotta keep that no, thats a great question. What were telling our clients is trump deliberately settled for a phase one mini deal for very clever political reasons that fit very nicely into president xi jinpings political needs too. Trump can now claim a small victory in the trade war, but he can till carry on this trade war all during 2020 because if you want to be elected president in, lets say, michigan, wisconsin, pennsylvania, ohio, youve got to do some serious china bashing. So were going to get this deal under our belts, and thats good. Thats going to take the worst of the tension off. But believe me, you have not heard the end of this trade war. Trump is going to use it to get reelected. Blake you mentioned michigan, ohio, pennsylvania, we have all of these headlines of how well the economy is doing, the stock market, 401 k s and on down the line, but in those states you know that theres been a little bit of a pullback with manufacturing. Does that continue into 2020, and if so, how does that impact the election, in your view . Because those are potentially the swing states. Yeah. Well, well i think the election is long enough away so that with the phase one trade deal under our belt, i think a lot of the Global Industrial trade where chinas really the hub is going to get, is going to very much come back to life. And thatll be good for those rust belt states you mentioned, but also any place in the world thats dependent on industry. The country of germany, for example, too bad their Electoral College votes dont count for trump. Blake i was thinking about this as we basically end the decade here. If you had started 2010 and just put your money in the market and closed your eyes and woke up on tuesday, you would have been just fine. What would you say to those who might say, you know what . Shut your eyes for the next ten years and take your chances . There are a lot of people who have been saying that for many, many decades. That is pretty good advice for investors. Now, thats a little bit of heresy to say on a realtime Financial News network that makes its money by getting people to constantly change their opinion about the market [inaudible conversations] no matter which way it goes. Look, you and i know what the truth is, man. Buy and hold, it always works, right . Blake and i guess this decade proves that. Donald luskin, happy new year, hope you enjoy the holiday. Happy new year, man. Blake not black friday, not cyber monday, not many of those christmas sales either. It turns out if youre in the market for that Big Electronics purchase, today happens to be the best day to make that purchase. Jeff flock is at adt electronics in chicago this evening to explain why. Sometimes retailers buy too much of a product like this one here. This is, what is this, carl . Health Officials Say it happened this month in los angeles, denver, chicago, richmond, virginia, and austin, texas. And more travelers potentially could have been exposed to this highly contagious virus. Fox news matt finn is at Ohare International airport in chicago this evening with the story. Reporter the people who have to be most concerned are those that were here at ohare or any of the five airports nationwide as the person with measles passed through the airport. Medical experts tell us that the disease lingers in the air for about two hours. So far people here today that weve talked to, most of them say that theyre vaccinated, and they arent too worried. I dont remember ever having them, but im vaccinated, so no. No, ive never had the measles. Are you vaccinated . Actually, yes, i am. Its a very unfortunate thing. Im hoping that everybody is okay. Reporter the five airports that had a person with measles pass through include chicago ohare around december 12th and 17th, Richmond International around december 17th. Austin international around december 17th. Denver international around december 11th and lax around december 11th. Medical experts warn if you were in these airports around these dates, you might have been exposed. The symptoms could take days or weeks to appear and are typically flulike until that rush appears. People are encouraged to see their doctor oneonone versus waiting in a clinic or a waiting room because the disease is so contagious. If one person walks into a room of ten people who are all unvaccinated, about nine of them will develop infection. So its very contagious. Reporter the cdc reports 2019 has seen the highest number of measle cases in 25 years. 1,276 cases this year. Doctors tell us the best prevention is to simply get that vaccination, but we have talked to people here who say they do not get the vaccination and they are not vaccinating their children. Medical experts tell us that, of course, creates pockets where this disease surface, blake. Finish. Blake matt friendship for us in chicago tonight as chicagos ohare airport. Meantime, President Trump continues his florida vacation this evening in, at maralago. The president s been there for a few days time, and over the last few days he has been tweeting about impeachment. Rich edson is in palm beach tonight with the story. Rich . Reporter blake, President Trump and Speaker Pelosi are taking a break from their holiday weeks to tweet about one another. Speaker pelosi writes, quote every witness told the same story, despite the president s attempts to cover it up, President Trump abused his power for his own personal gain. Hashtag defend our democracy. A response from President Trump, quote so interesting to see nancy pelosi demanding fairness from the Senate Majority leader, Mitch Mcconnell, when she presided over the most unfair hearing in the history of the United States congress. Speaker pelosi is still withholding impeachment articles the house passed last week. Democrats want to try to force Senate Republicans to allow witnesses in any senate trial. They say the white house is stonewalling their investigation. And if the president and Administration Officials did nothing wrong suspending aid to ukraine, then they should have no problem testifying about it. The most Important Information available, the direct evidence, is being held from the jewish derekly committee from the Congress Judiciary committee, from the congress. And the most important witnesses in this trial are being kept from the American People and not to be allowed to go forward and testify so that the people can hear the facts and the jurors, the senators can make a fair verdict based on all of the statements. Reporter republicans say the speaker rushed to impeach the president , and now shes delaying it, proving, they say, that this is all a political charade. We all know how this story ends. There are not twothirds of the senators willing to convict and remove the president , and as a consequence and in an election year, for crying out loud. So as a consequence, we all know how this ends. So to the extent that theyre simply taking up space and taking up valuable time, i guess that must be a game plan. But it doesnt seem like a winning strategy. Reporter congress isnt due back to washington until january 7th. Blake . Blake rich edson, traveling with the president in palm beach, florida. Thank you. Lets bring in sam dewey, former attorney up on capitol hill who has dealt with all things capitol hill, and thats going to come into focus here in about ten days time. Thanks for coming in tonight. Thanks for having me. Blake a little quiet right now. The big question is whether or not nancy pelosi is going to be bringing these articles of impeachment january 6th, january 7th when congress is back in session or if shes going to hold on to it. What do you think . Im not sure. It could go one way, it could go the other. Part of the problem here is theres so many different variables in play and so many ways that Speaker Pelosi could be thinking. Maybe im going to delay them for some sort of small ball Tactical Advantage in a negotiation. Maybe im going to delay them further down the line to hook up with my primary process. Maybe im going to delay them to make sure some legislation gets passed before we move into the impeachment trial. Were just not sure, and it could go a variety of different ways. Blake if she doesnt send it over to the senate, are they going to act as business as usual and just kind of have this cloud over them . I guess they would have to, right . If she doesnt give it to them january 6th or 7th or before then in. Well, thats an interesting legal question, and i guess there are a couple different ways you can look at this one. Under one legal view, the president hasnt been impeached because the process of impeachment is sending them over. Blake and the white house is starting to make that argument that its going to go through the senate in order for him to potentially right. Essentially, its a binary choice. Hes impeached, in which case the senate has jurisdiction and act, or hes not impeached. Pelosi seems to want this hybrid in between where the president has been impeached, has been stained with that, but the senate doesnt have jurisdiction, which i have to say is veried odd. Its unprecedented. Blake Lisa Murkowski has been in the news, republican senator out of alaska, at certain points hasnt necessarily walked the party line with republicans. She said in a local interview on Christmas Eve that she was, quoteunquote, disturbed that Mitch Mcconnell who would be a juror like the other 99 senators would be, quoteunquote, in total coordination with the white house. Thats gotten a little bit of pick up here over the last few days, and i want you to listen to how democrats are reacting. My hope is that some of my republican colleagues will have the same misgivings that senator murkowski expressed. Mitch mcconnell is sabotaging this proceeding by saying he wont be impartial, he will do the president s bidding. He has a responsibility to do the trial in a way that allows the facts to be heard and let others make up their own minds even if his is closed. Seriously concerned when you hear your majority leader say that hes going to work hand in hand with the white house. So facts doesnt matter. Blake before we get your reaction, byron york saying the democrats make no sense. The constitution gives the senate the, quote, sole power to try all impeachments. And the senate runs on majority rule. That is the founding principle of the senate, and the majority elects a leader. So the idea that the senate, which has the sole power to try impeachment, the idea that the majority leader has no role just seems to be completely nonsensical. Blake so what about this idea that the Senate Majority leader, Mitch Mcconnell whos a juror is in total coordination with the white house . I think you have to look at what was meant by that. Is it total coordination in terms of this will be a fair process as opposed to the house process . Is it total coordination in terms of all the procedural things that have to happen . Or is it something else. So i think there are a lot of different ways you can look at this. I certainly understand how senator murkowski views it and why she could, she would be a little bit concerned about that. Blake going back to the issue of when this could potentially head on over to senate, nancy pelosi could hold on to this thing for months, could she not . If she so chooses . I think she could try to, and the question would be does the senate say, well, youve not impeached him and we can dismiss the articles, essentially, for wont of prosecution. Blake and, by the way, theres the election next year. Sam dewey, former congressional attorney, happy new year. Appreciate it. Thank you. Tcb, oh blake high stakes on the high seas tonight as three countries that the u. S. Watches closely are now conducting joint military drills. Fox news Lucas Tomlinson is at the pentagon tonight with the details. Reporter its the fist time iran, china and russia have come together for joint naval exercises. An iranian commander spoke about the exercises coming up earlier today. Translator the fact that we are now hosting these powers means that our relations have reached a significant point. God willing, itll have global outcomes, and its message is peace and friendship in the light of unity and responsible collective cooperation. Reporter the joint military exercises are kicking off in the gulf of to man outside the persian gulf in the strait of hormuz where over the summer a pate of attacks on a spate of attacks on commercial oil tankers occurred. U. S. Officials say the iranians, russians and chinese really dont trust each ore. They will also not be alone. The uss harry s. Truman just arrived. Quote we are aware of the Multilateral Exercise being conducted between iran, china and russia in the arabian sea. We are monitoring it and continue to work with our partners and allies to ensure the free flow of commerce in international waterways. An American Contractor was just killed in Northern Iraq in a rocket attack and several u. S. Troops were also injured. Whats not immediately clear, the severity of those injuries. Make blake has anyone taken respondent yet, or do we have an idea who might be behind that attack . Reporter earlier this month secretary of state mike pompeo blamed iran for two earlier rocket attacks where u. S. Troops are housed. An official just said isis does not have the ability to carry out a sophisticated rocket attack like this, about 30 rockets just landed on that iraqi base in the city of kirkuk where u. S. Troops are also stationed, so all signs are pointing to iran, blake. Blake lucas tomlin szob, thank you. A lawsuit claims that major american and International Companies working on Afghanistan Reconstruction projects used contractors that paid the taliban for protection. The suit alleges these payments then gave the insurgency funds to stage attacks and kill u. S. Troops. On the phone with us is fox news military analyst, the retired colonel david hunt. Colonel, thanks for joining us. Happy holidays to you, hope you have a happy new year as well. You know, you just heard from lucas the attack that took place today and and separately in afghanistan, different country same region though, we hear about this lawsuit that came out. What do you make of it . This is old news. The United States has done it, every country has done this, and contractors certainly have cone it, intelligence agent done it, intelligence agents have done it. Paid protection. It makes a lot of sense. A lot of times youre bribing. But the fact the contractors have done this is not surprising considering the u. S. Government has done it. It saves on personnel and protection. Go ahead. Blake no, i was going to say you say its not surprising, but i guess if youre one of the family members of the 143 members of the military or the contractors who were named in this suit or who are represented in this suit, what would you tell those family members . Well, its a terrible loss. Lets just the issue is whether you can blame the bribing. I get why people want to recoup some money for the deaths besides the insurance. Its terrible. Terrible, the loss of life. But the fact that people, governments or organizations pay contractors, they pay the enemy, the taliban or anyone else, for protection is not a new game. Thats all im getting at. Its not right. I wish they didnt do it, but it is fairly common practice. Blake you just heard lucas talk about some over countries the u. S. Is keeping their eye on, russia and china. Russia today announced that it has put a hypersonic weapon into its fleet. Essentially that its operational, essentially it is a missile that not only goes straight, but it can move in any sort of direction that it wants to evade detection, up, down, right, left, east, west, you name it. Not a straight line. The u. S. Doesnt have this technology. Russia does . How concerned should we be . Yeah. I think, first of all, the russians and the chinese have done a lot of work the last 20 years developing technology. Back to russia, they have an economy the size smaller than italy. To produce this kind of weapon, it would be its a fantastic goal to meet. Until our services do some kind of release or comment on this, it sounds out of worldly, and again, with an economy the size of italy, which is what russia has. Blake speaking of outer worldly or other worldly, lets move on to china quick because today they sent a rocket up into space that lays the groundwork for potentially china sending a mission to mars next year. This was the rocket that went up today. I guess this begs the question, lieutenant colonel, are we losing the space race here to china . No, no. Chinas just started. China is the hardest country we have to get a read on for a lot of different reasons. Weve formed space command. Its not to counter china. But the United States has been way ahead of everybody and will continue to be as far as what goes up into space. Space has been militarized for an awful long time with technology and gps communications, etc. The chinese have been in this business for a while, but i you want to watch the chinese, what they do, were a big trading partner of the chinese, obviously, but theyre not getting blake retired colonel david hunt joining us on the phone. Happy new year to you, sir. Happy new year. Thank you. Blake still to come this evening on the evening edit, lets move on to the border wall. The Campaign Says warren has raised roughly 17 million this quarter, theyre hoping to boost that to 20 m. But even if they are able to get there, that would be far short of the more than 26 million that warren raised last quarter. Joining me now is Fox News Contributor and wall street Journal Editorial Board member bill mcgurn. Hello, bill, happy friday to you. Thank you. Blake so Elizabeth Warren sends out that email that if youre on a campaign you never want to see, which is i need more money. Right. Well, look, this is where we are approaching primaries. At some point the crunch comes and the leaders are separated from the rest of the pack. You know, its not surprising since her standing has kind of been falling in the polls. I think medicare for all has kind of been her waterloo on this, you know . Even democrats complaining that he hasnt been honest about how shes going to pay for it. So i think she has a bunch of problems. Blake cory booker sent out an email a couple months ago saying basically his campaign needed a lifeline, and hes still in it. The other side of the argument is dont read into this too much. Shes still raising a lot of money x shes still in it. Yeah. Except shes still in it, but it doesnt seem that her star is rising. Maybe itll go back up again, but right now it doesnt it seems that if youre looking for someone to carry the progressive flag, bernie might be a better bet than mrs. Warren at this point. Blake yeah. I want to get into Bernie Sanders in a second, but just to finish on this note, Real Clear Politics National polling average here, just to kind of show where Elizabeth Warren is, joe biden at the top at 28 give or take, Bernie Sanders at about 18, 19. And Elizabeth Warren at 15. These are fundraising figures. Right. Blake theres the polling. And when you move into iowa and New Hampshire as we scroll the numbers there, shes running fourth in iowa, shes running fourth in New Hampshire. Is this a clear top three, top four, top two . Where do you think things stand . Yeah blake [inaudible] yeah. It doesnt look like because Pete Buttigieg doesnt do that well nationally, but in the two big front states, iowa and New Hampshire, hes doing pretty well. I think shes going to have to show something for that. Look, a while ago i thought she was a pretty good bet that maybe bernie would be a little too hard measure for people. Harsh for people. But she and Bernie Sanders are basically splitting the progressive vote, and until one of them gets out, they kind of hinder the other. Before i thought it might be bernie, now its looking like Elizabeth Warren. Blake you think so . Well, bernies i dont agree with him on almost anything, but, you know, he conveys that he clearly believes his proposals which i think are cockamamie, but he believes them, and he articulates them, and he doesnt shy away from the unpleasant part. For example, on paying for medicare for all, yes, your tax would go up, but overall youd be better off. So i think he gets a few points for honesty that mrs. Warren didnt quite get. Blake there was some inside beltway charter over the last couple days, theres a politico article today basically saying that that bernies rising. You know, you look at the numbers, and hes there at second. I guess theres something to it, no . Yeah. I would say the two big clumps of votes that could change, change the constellation, if joe biden collapsed, then a lot of that would be up for grabs depending on who pucked up i dont think theres any Single Person that would pick up all his support. And people watch him every debate, its like a high wire act. Youre waiting for the guy to fall off. He did pretty well last time. And the same on the other side. The progressive vote right now, again, is Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. And until one of them drops out, theyre kind of only half effective. Blake but its not like this i guess its not a case of one plus one equals two, right . If she drops out or the other one drops out, its not like their going to get all of i think they would get quite a few, either one would have a credible case that i represent the progressive voice here. And its interesting that they havent attacked one another up until now. Blake up until now. Right. Blake lake iowa [laughter] is, what, five weeks finish. Thats right. When people get close to that ring blake iowa and the volume turns up. Bill mcgurn, gotta leave it there. Thanks. Thanks, blake. Happy new year to you. Blake you as well. Spotify today announcing it is turning off the volume when it comes to political advertising. The Music Streaming Service saying that political ads will not be running on its platform in 2020. Jackie deangelis has the story tonight from new york. Jackie . Reporter spotify is the latest to say that it is not selling political advertisements on its music streaming platform starting early next year. 141 million users, and there is no doubt its a broad reach. The change is going to include spotify original and exclusive podcasts as well. Now, twitter said in october that it would ban the ads, facebook said that it wont. Google is under a rot of a lot of pressure and said it wont allow advertisers to target election ads using data, but the question is can these platforms actually police the content . Spotify says no. In a statement a spokesperson said, quote at this point in time we do not yet have the necessary level of robustness in our process, systems and tools to responsibly validate and review this content. We will reassess this decision as we continue to evolve our capabilities. Now, groups to be impacted by the ban, candidates for office, elected or appointed officials, political parties, pacs and super pacs. Blake . Blake and well see maybe who might be next. Jackie deangelis with the story tonight, thank you. Well, its not unusual anymore for schools to specialize in s. T. E. Sometimes in school we have to do measurements, and i already know part of them because when we do the drones, i have to do some of it. Reporter salters says she stunt tells the kids she sometimes tells the kids shes tricking them into learning. She wants them to know they are capable of doing anything.
