He joins us from detroit with the latest. Hey, grady. Reporter hey, neil. As you said we dont know the specific details of this contract but the news it has even been agreed upon by the two sides is just trickling down to the workers here. Obviously theyre pretty excited by the news. I want to bring in jessica. You came from the plant you work in at indiana to be here at the Renaissance Center where the negotiations are happening. How do you feel you know there is an agreement . Even though it is cold and rain any were excited to be out here at this critical moment representing the union and good news. Reporter what has been on strike without pay . It has been hard on a lot of people. 2 a 50 week a not as at all. Reporter youre a temporary worker, negotiations are behind closed doors. Were told this created a pathway for somebody like you who has worked three years consecutively, will be able to get fulltime employment f that is the case, if you find that out tomorrow, once the contract is put out to you guys, how would that make you feel . What would that mean to you and your family. It will be exciting. I really, were not only out here representing ourselves, were representing all future gm employees and temps. I hope they have created a clear, direct pathway for to us be hired. Reporter three years is how long youve been there youre making essentially half what some of the people around you are making on the floor. How much of a difference double in pay make for you . It will make a huge difference of course, yeah. Reporter you seem all smiles. Hopefully everything works out for you. Neil, local Union Leaders came from all over the country. Theyre here now and meet tomorrow morning. That is when they decide two things. The first whether the tentative agreement is good by them to pass on to workers. 49,000 of them will have to vote on it. The other thing they will decide is whether to officially end this strike. As of right now, even though there seems to be an agreement, the strike is still going on. So that is something we should learn more about in the next 24 hours or so neil . Neil grady, thank you very much. Grady trimble. In the break i was calling a few people about this, some of the broad parameters of the deal. It addresses some overtime issue. The time it takes for a new worker to eventually be up to the full time benefits and levels that current workers are. Remember this was a grandfather clause that new workers were paid at a huge disparity, they said, of between established workers. The established workers were also saying that had to be rectified. The company hasnt rectified this fully but it has narrowed the time range down. Also a promise and a carat thrown out to strikers that we i will be part of the companys Movement Toward electric vehicles. That had been a bone of contention as well. For a lot of employees, there are not a lot of workers in that field. That where you dont need as many. The companys direction toward electric vehicles is sore point for workers, whatever they sign on to is theyre signing on to their employment deaths. That is being addressed here. We dont know the details. We want a better handle. This is four year agreement. There will be talks with Fiat Chrysler and ford, they take it along the same deal to take it to them. We understand its a fouryear deal. It will apparently call for 3 increases in the first two years. The remaining years, where it could be a sticking point, will be paid as an out right bonus, not to move the salary levels too high. At gm, more than other automakers is averaging 60 bucks an hour. That is a real divisive issue for management. We have to get it under control. It will eat into our profits. A long way from. The devil as they say is in the details but lifting automakers stocks, auto suppliers as well. Well be rifling through that ahead of the president s planned presser with the president of italy very, very shortly. Lets get a read from fox news decision desk director arnen michigan. And Charlie Gasparino and patrice lee onuwka well hear from the president shortly. He has been a big proponent of unions in a unusual position for the republican president. Feeling the pain. The company had to reach an agreement with them. They were a crucial voting block for him in some of these states. Wanted to make sure this passes muster with them, if it does, does he take a victory bow here . He has been vocal about the deal and strike. Certainly one of his Campaign Promises to bring manufacturing jobs and union jobs back to the United States. So, maybe a little bit of a lap but i wouldnt take too much of a lap. Lets not forget the United States has been really propping up some of these big Auto Companies and, you know, as a taxpayer you have to wonder what did we get the most for our money and will we continue to get the most for our money in the future. Neil damned if you do, damned if you dont position, right . A lot of Gm Management folks were saying we were rescued, we realize because of this rescue we have to extra carefulcareful with the taxpayer money. We dont want to be silly with the agreement but we love our workers i think is the essentially the message. What are you hearing so far. This is good news for the president without question. We have seen models moodys put out, given what is going on with the economy the incumbent president should be reelected, predicting fairly reelection. Neil that model has worked every time since 1980, except the last election. Except 2016. Neil outside of that. To me the i think that model would work this time as long as the incumbent and the all people think about is the economy. Donald trump if nothing is not beige. He could take a back seat to the economy. He should be able to ride that to reelection. Neil that was a key finding in that, Charlie Gasparino. Were waiting for the president , the president of italy. They were both in the Oval Office Short time ago. President was making a lot of news then. Whenever they have the joint presser. We have charlie to do the italian translation. But you know couple days after columbus day. Neil what do you make of the fact that this strike thing is settled, gets another uncertainty out of the way . Manufacturing has been in this contracting mode, still up from where it was when the president took office. Right. Neil but it has been reversing. What do you think . Listen. Trump had very little to do with this to be honest with you. He will take a victory lap to be honest with you, why not. He should. That is the way you play politics. I wonder, politically watching democrats last night was very interesting, if it matters that much. I think the Democratic Party is coming to the conclusion, slowly, because you could see from the other candidates that Elizabeth Warren is unelectable. If you looked the way they jumped on her and attacked her policies as unworkable, beto orourke and buttigieg, they all came down on here on the sort of lunacy of medicare for all. Neil found it odd, all of sudden they want to make sure things are paid for. My point, there are two things at work. Obviously perceived frontrunner, but they believe, i think democrats are starting to believe she cant win against trump. If you notice, if there was a victor last night was joe biden. If he makes it through this, obviously can win against trump. He can win. Every state poll, i know you say hillary, this is different. He has broad support in the Africanamerican Community which hillary didnt have. He can win, he can win in oneonone. Now the problem is, does he get there . Last night i thought was fascinating because im watching liberals who are almost on board with warren on everything, almost parroting her stuff, attacking the, attacking her like a republican might attack her. Neil it is whackamole whoever is in the lead they target them. Patrice, one of the things i did notice were all focused as well on the impeachment battle, along comes steny hoyer, number Ranking Member we would like the process wrapped by the end of the year. He is getting concerned about this dragging on and on. What did you make of that . I absolutely think so. That has been the timeline from the start of this. Well be done, hands off come december, going into 2020, early primaries they dont want this to drag them down. In part they recognize this can be both divisive but also a strong turnout for the president. And the challenge with 2020 is going to be what was 2016, nonvoters not turning out. The young people, people of color, people who are less educated, people who are lower income, if they sit out the election, democrats are in trouble. There is so much emphasis and enthusiasm. I think they will turn out. Bidens popularity, among africanamericans cannot be understated here. And that is, that is the turnout that they did not have last time. But not among, i will say not among young blacks. Not among hispanics. Neil it will be tested, it will be tested in South Carolina. I would argue that warren has red the democratic correctly. Democratic electorate wants big change. The base. Electorate. Biden has read the general electorate. The argument that will win this time around, after eight years of charisma, four years of chaos, meaning trump, try netflix and chill. That is the message. That is the message. Neil im sorry i dont get the netflix he is dying to bring in netflix. Neil i see. All right. All right. I think that the, it is, you call it normally, whatever, but i think that in the middle of the country, wants to wake up and not tune in to the news. Neil let me ask you about this. I was following this moodys break down. They have three different models, based on the stock market, another one, pocketbook issues, unemployment. They just look at the, that is how we elect our president , electoral votes, not popular vote. Stock market model means the president gets 289 he electoral votes. 19 more than he needs. Pocketbook, just purely based on pocketbook issues, 351 electoral votes. Unemployment, jobs are issue, 332 electoral votes. Under each and every model, what that is telling you, it is the economy stupid. Assuming that is the case. That is assuming this stays in place for another year. Assuming the economy stays strong, donald trump has clear advantages. The problem is, if you can make it the economy stupid, he wins. And my point is, he does not do that. I think you would Like Fighting from behind. Neil i just want to let patrice get n say that again . I want to say, moodys, when you look at their analysis, also said that the personal characteristics, personal traits of the candidate was not factored into their analysis and could make an impact. Obama had an economy recovering. Neil im glad you mentioned that, a big wild card here was voter turnout, if youre passionate base, to arnins point so annoyed another four years of donald trump they go out in droves. Be clear who is the messenger here. Moodys service. They never, maybe did well on the couple times, they missed every financial crisis. They were positive on the model just telling you. Neil the president will quote them ad nauseam. He will. Should have quoted them in 2006 when they said everything was hunkydory before i covered these guys. They are, they are the worst. They may not know much about economics but they do neil let me ask you this. If you have Something Like this, potential, i agree that you cant throw everything on the president s lap, good or bad, if the gm thing settles, helps the manufacturing sector, perception, it removes uncertainty ahead of the holidays, consumers are already pent up to spend, this is another reason to spend, then you got the china trade deal, problems galore there. It is not signed off yet, but a lot of things are tipping the president s way. This would fuel that argument, right . Thats right. It is possible he will get a china deal or something he can be signed called the china deal. That is good news for the president. Neil even if it isnt a great deal but will call it that. What is great news for the president , everybody but biden. None of those people on the stage, Elizabeth Warren, logically neil you never know. Their policies are so illogical i think trump will win easy against any of them. Neil patrice, im not that old but old enough to remember that the race between john mccain and barack obama was fairly even until financial meltdown. All of sudden barack obama had an eight to 10 point lead. I dont i think he ever lost it. Unexpected crisis can change that. Absolutely. Neil all things being equal this kind of report showing an economy that will dictate the course of the electoral votes, it does look pretty good for the president . It does and you know what is interesting, when we look at the increase in median Household Incomes hitting 50year high, that takes a lot of wind out of the sails for democrats wages are stagnant, American Families are not doing better even if unemployment stays low. When you add to the fact people feel their financial situation, not the just looking at the stock market. But they have money and makes a difference. Neil i keep jumping on you guys. I apologize for that. When charlie is here i just do that. We are going to go back to the president. Take a quick break. He is with the president of italy. Gm is confirming in a statement, we can confirm the uaw statement regarding a proposed tentative agreement. Additional details will be provided at the appropriate time. I gave you a broad blueprint. It is makings of a deal. Well see where it goes after this. No, just a sec. What would it look like if we listened more . Could the right voice, the right set of words, bring us all just a little closer . Get us to open up . Even push us further . It could, if we took the time to listen. The most inspiring minds, the most compelling stories. Download audible and listen for a change. I wanted more thats why ive got the power of 1 2 3 medicines with trelegy. Maybe you should think again. Ask your doctor about oncedaily trelegy and the power of 1 2 3. Trelegy 123 save at trelegy. Com neil all right. To the white house right now. Were awaiting the president of the United States and his counterpart from italy. Sergio mattarella. Mattarella. Mozzarella . Neil Something Like that. The 12th president of italy since world would war two. A largely say ceremony. His own brother was as as as assassinated by the mob. It got him into politics to wipe out corruption. He does not speak english. He will have an translator there. Charlie and i will do our best. I do know italian curse words. Neil you might hear a a lot grazi and showing support. Here centerleft party in italy. Not like our Democratic Party in the United States. A little bit center left. A coalition party. Well follow what the president might have to say on this. What looks like, i stress a deal to end a 31day strike. Bedeviled General Motors and United Auto Workers union. That might provide ease to the economy. We have former Federal Reserve advisor Danielle Dimartino booth. Were talking about manufacturing slowdown and propel Federal Reserve to keep cutting rates. Im wondering though, given the stability and some recent economic numbers. Not all of them. Maybe something as esoteric here, maybe they dont have cut as much what do you think . Jerome powell and federal open Market Committee would prefer to not have to cut Interest Rates. I would think they are pretty excited last week, when the probability of an october rate cut kind of went nosediving towards, into the 50 range. But once we saw that retail sales figure hit this morning neil, that probability shot right back up to 87 . Neil by the way, we tell people, it fell. 3 of a percent. Most people were expecting a plus sign in front of that. Mirror opposite what most people anticipated. Does that worry you . That is sort of a hole that consumers have in their confidence and their buying through the holidays, to keep this economy chugging along . That is exactly right. And as healthy as weve seen Bank Earnings come off of very easy comparables to last year, weve also seen credit card purchases at the big banks coming down at a very rapid rate, suggesting that there may be follow on weakness in retail sales. And this pretty much kicks the last pillar of growth out from underneath gdp estimates. Weve seen bank after bank this morning, taking down their Third Quarter gdp estimates, based on this, based on business investorrieses not being restocked as quickly they had anticipated but were looking at something around the 1 level for the Third Quarter which means were trending down to a fouryear low in Economic Growth. So without the consumer and without the ability to say boy, this economy keeps chugging along based on the consumer, if you take away the narrative, there is not much underneath it. Businesses are pulling back for several quarters in a row now. Neil they are concerned about it. Arnin mishkin from the fox news desk, you hear crosscurrent, moodys analytical themes, economy is president s friend, he gets reelected. Anything that goes awry, Interest Rates dont do what the president hopes they are going to do, then what . If the economy turns around, moodys numbers turn around. Their estimates turn around. That makes it very hard. If were making economic challenges, there will be desire for some kind of a change. That makes much harder for the president. That is why trump is so aggressive to get fed to lower Interest Rates. He definitely wants to keep the economy strong for his own reelection. Who he is running against matters in a major way. If you put, right now, Elizabeth Warren is in the ether, right . People are not focusing on it. Wait until they have a choice. Lets say she is the nominee. I think that is or any of them except for biden. Trump will look at people say, okay the economy is slowing down, but she will take away your health insurance. She will do this, do that. You will get taxed here. Neil even with slowing in economy he wins . When you start spelling out what she means for average people are not, looking at this right now. That is why she scores decent in polls against him. When she see how much after socialist she is neil you know how this gets when taxes are on the line she will raise taxes on middle class. She did not answer the question. She had a bad moment. Neil yes or no question. The reason why biden does good he is much more moderate. Neil in that field it is easy to look pragmatic. Well look a quick break. Squeeze the break in before the hear from the president of the United States, counterpart from italy. A lot to talk about, stay with us. Youre watching fox business. Looking good, patrick. I know. vo go national. Go like a pro. You saw the initial set of sanctions that the president chose to put on turkey. I think frankly the world as underappreciated the severity of those sanctions and how much impact they will ultimately have on the turkish economy. Our bowl is not to break the relationship. It is to deny turkey the capacity to continue to engage in the behavior. President said this was a bad deal, bad thing, were working to stop it. Neil that is the secretary of state essentially saying the sanctions on turkey keep coming yet turkey keeps bombing. To add insult to injury. Turkey flipflops whether it would meet with the Vice President or secretary of state when they are in turkey tomorrow. Then of course clarifying, well meeturse, i will meet with with the president of the United States. That apparently has changed. This ongoing conflict between our countries, how to best address it goes on and on. Edward lawrence in washington with the very latest. Hey, edward. Reporter president of turkey says he wont stop until his offensive is done, whatever goals they are trying to complete are finished there. Members of congress are gearing up for a meeting a the white house today about turkey. There has been a tidal wave of criticism from democrats and some republicans about the president s decision to remove troops from the syriaturkey border. The president said he would help negotiate peace between syria and turkey but thats it. So i view the situation on the Turkish Border with syria to be for the United States strategically brilliant. Our soldiers are out of there. Reporter the bottom line for president is protecting u. S. Soldiers, keeping them safe. Still democrats going to the white house today for this meeting say they will tell the president directly how they feel. Well, look the damage has already been done as far as im concerned. The removal of American Forces is a calamity and i think some of us, i know i will, express that to the president. Ive said these things publicly. I, i think what happened is, puts our allies in jeopardy, makes people wonder in the future why they would want to align with the United States. Reporter President Donald Trump also blaming the European Union for the Current Situation, saying they have been taking advantage of the u. S. By not putting their own troops in that situation because the eu is closer to that area, it would affect them more than it would affect us as the president says. Were 7,000 miles away. Neil did the president say he was strategically brilliant in this decision . He did say it was strategically brilliant. I thought that was important to hear. Neil im quite thin. Thank you very much, my friend, former Vice President joe biden is defending his sons business dealings. Take a look. My son did nothing wrong. I did nothing wrong. I carried out the policy of the United States government in rooting out corruption in, in ukraine. What we have to do now is focus on donald trump. He is going after me because he knows if i get, if i get the nomination i will beat him like a drum. Neil all right. Axios reporter stef kight whether the former Vice President succeeded in ending this issue. Of course the same day as you reported, steph, his son hunter took to the airwaves, what he did probably didnt look good. That is why he is taking himself out of any board activity, china, elsewhere, if his father is elected president , he wont get involved. What do you make of this falling out since . This is not the end of the issue. The president will continue to talk about Hunter Bidens International Business dealings while joe biden was in office. This is something that could make joe biden vulnerable as we head into 2020. I think it was interesting in the debates last night, that democrats didnt really push on this yet. They didnt really use this as an issue. Even cory booker took a moment to defend joe biden saying, we need to focus on trump. We need not to use what trump is saying against joe biden. So it will be interesting to see whether at any point that changes. Whether there are more questions asked about what hunter was doing at the time that joe biden was Vice President of the United States. Neil you know, most americans dont get caught up in the legal weeds or controversy or making a phone call on behalf of a son of a former Vice President , they almost seem to cancel each other out. I dont know where that goes. How do you think this does play out . When it comes to the issues with hunter biden there is a sense we see this nepotism a lot in washington, d. C. , politics. This is not something necessarily new. It is interesting hunter saying maybe going back he wouldnt do that again. He really didnt think through the political implications that his job on a board of a Ukrainian Company would end up playing in his fathers future political career. These kinds of issues are complicated. People have been pointing to the trump family as well, where there are trump family members involved in the administration. Others are involved in the trump business. So there are questions there. So it does seem like there is some, i wouldnt say canceling out, but a lot of pointing fingers at similarly similar issues. When it comes to the president s phone call with the ukranian president , that is something the democrats are looking into, was there a specific request in trade for help to defeat a political opponent. That is really the heart of this matter. That is the heart of this issue and what House Democrats are still digging into. Neil well see what happens. Stef kight, thank you very, very much. On that issue, impeachment whole thing, where this all lands, steny hoyer says if it comes to a process, he would like it wrapped up. Obviously speaking for leadership by the end of this year. Well see how that goes. Gm and uaw reaching what they call a tentative deal. Well get the deal from toyota north american ceo jim lintz, right after this. Heyll be okay . I think theyll be fine. Neil tentative treatment. Thats what theyre calling it. Uaw and General Motors confirming, that is strike could be on the verge of ending. Going on better part of 31 days right now. The longest such walkout going back to 1970. Richard nixon was president at the time. Read from toyota north america ceo jim lentz. Always so good to have you. So much we know, so much we dont. Both side think they have something here to satisfy both sides, union gets a bump in pay. Devil is in the details. But a lot of this is how it is factored out over the next four years. That is crucial to gm where these costs have gotten kind of steep, havent they . I think it is great news. I think it is great news. Im sure team members at General Motors are anxious to get back to work to earn a paycheck. Im sure General Motors customers are anxious to come back in the dealerships to get their cars repair as parts continue to flow. It is great news for suppliers, many of which we all use. Neil right. I think overall the big winner is the u. S. Economy because its, Auto Industry is a huge portion of that and General Motors is obviously a big player in the industry. I think its a winwin all around. Neil it does have indirect effect on guys like you and toyota, what have you . Everything is sort of interlocked here. If they do have an agreement, obviously those parts and all start flowing again. Work continues again, but the impact is already there, right . How severe an impact . Well, you know, General Motors entered the strike period with a fairly reasonable supply of vehicles. So im not sure necessarily impacted their current sales volumes. Depends how long it will take to be able to get the flow of product moving back in. Then how long it will take to get the parts moving. So, you know, it is difficult for me to say sitting here, the impact on General Motors. Hopefully it is limited. And they will be able to get back to business as soon as possible. Neil i know how these things go, jim. You educated me on this in the past, the blueprint theyre using here with gm, they would use on the uaw takes the same package i guess, ford, chrysler, some of these others. How do you expect that process to go . Hopefully goes very smoothly. The important thing theyre able to communicate to the workforce, what the deal is, so it can get ratified very quickly. Then move on to the other manufacturers and we get back to a industry that is, that is selling cars again and taking care of customers. Neil how is that again going . Even prior to the gm walkout, a lot of americans were sort of pulling back from auto related purchases, and the like. Then we heard steph talk about americans looking at this, are looking upwards of sevenyear loans, that sort of thing. Tell me what the environment looks like now these days . Yeah, you know, it is interesting. Because of where labor day fell this year, relative to last year, everyone looked at this large dropoff in september volume. They were wondering if the sky was falling. But the fact is, if you look at august and september combined, this year compared to last, sales were almost identical for the industry. Neil is that right . Industry is still very, very strong. It is tracking at about a 17 million rate, which is frankly stronger than we forecast it to be. Overall it is very good. But your question about consumers and their ability and willingness to pay for vehicles is the important question. I will give you an example. If you look at the small suv segment today, the hottest segment, largest segment in the industry, over the last six years what consumers are paying on monthly basis is almost identical. It is about 400 a month. They are either unwilling or unable to move beyond that. And that is a result of prices going up but payments staying the same. Incentives have gone up as a result and stretch their payments. Neil do they extend over more years, is what im saying . Might be 400 a month, but now not three years, four years. Could be upwards of seven years . Yes. Yes. So i think we are reaching the point at which, consumers are either going to be willing to pay more, because they really cant stretch any further in terms of their, the number of months theyre paying for vehicles. Neil all right. That well watch very closely. Jim lentz, thank you very, very much. I dont know what the president will have to say about this when he takes questions from reporters. A joint presser with the president of italy. We know he urged throughout the process both sides he didnt get intimately involved in, most president s dont, that both sides cobble together a agreement, sooner the better. This dragged on 30 days plus, he will herald this as progress he wanted to see. He says the backdrop is a strong economy. Obviously strong economy. This backdrop he says favors him. The president earlier on referring to these markets as something that you can kiss goodbye if we kiss him goodbye from the white house. We shall see. More after this. Four companies, johnson johnson, down the road could be. You know the drill here. Theyre a long way from done. But the fact they through a figure out like that, tells you obviously contemplating big hits, even though wall street prefers, get it settled, move on. Remove the uncertainty. Well be with you. We shall see. Wee works ipo is falling flat. Is things working out for softbank. Deirdre bolton on a lot of big bets that soured very quickly. Some of these investments for softbank are working, some are not. The big one not working right now, aptly named wework. The company pulled plans to go public. We know that. Laying off 2,000 employees. It may even run out of cash by november if no emergency financing comes through. Not surprisingly, wework is halting the china expansion. That was the Third Largest country of revenue for wework after u. S. And uk. We looked at investors softbank is trying to save the company from bankruptcy. The valuation neil, was once 47 billion. It is now around 7 billion. So what does that mean for softbank . Softbank owns 29 of the company, around an 11 billiondollar investment. So most analysts say, listen they will have to write down at least 2 billion on that investment, if not more. The ceo of softbank apparently made too hasty after decision to be in what looked like the hottest company around. He didnt put governance in there, oversight, no control. Reportedly made decision to invest in the wework founder, himself in 30 minutes. As we know the founder now disgraced and ousted, adam newman. Softbank has more exposure uber than it would like. 7 billion in that. Ubers stock down 30 since the public debut. Analysts estimate that is close to a 4 billiondollar hit. On the plus side it has margin of error. It invested 20 million in jack mas alibaba. The current valuation is 90 billion. That is a return of 4500 . A little margin of error there, neil. Neil that isnt too shabbily. Thank you very much. Deirdre bolton. Were monitoring former Vice President joe biden. He is speaking are porters saying he will saying he thinks he did a good job last night at the debate. What will anyone say, i theyre monitoring him. Also monitoring the place he want to move into, the white house. But there is a guy there named donald trump, who is president of the italy. They will be shortly going to microphones there, to get questions from both italian and american reporters. I think you know the drill. Generally the american president who gets lions share of questions. The other guy sits there, like leader of finland a couple weeks ago, says, i would rather be any place but here. Im glad this guy is here. Ashley webster, to make sense what is going on with brexit. Good luck with that. Neil were getting word Emmanuel Macron think as an agreement can be finalized in the next few days. What do you think . Listen, thats all good and well but dont forget boris johnson, whatever he gets has to go back and sell it, certainly to the Northern Irish allies, the democratic unionist party, who really affected the most on this border with ireland. If they dont like it he wont have the votes to get it through. Here we are again. Neil what if he likes it, has the votes in parliament to get it . I think so. It would be tough. But that is a big if. Neil so lets say this doesnt happen, at all. Now what are johnsons, Boris Johnsons options. Under the law passed by parliament, he has to have a plan if place by end of this week, by the 19th. Which is a saturday. If not he is forced to ask for delay from brussels yet again. Back to january 31st of next year. It just goes on and on and on. Boris johnson said were leaving october 31st doordie. I would rather be dead in a ditch he said than ask for another delay. Neil what would happen if he did that . Well if he asked neil dont ask for another delay, 31st im out . There is speculation. This is what he could do, if you wanted to play games, i dont know if he will, there is rumor he will send a letter asking for extension. He will send another saying ignore everything i asked you in the first letter. Fulfilling wish, requesting a delay, kind of going around it, saying no were out of here. I dont know what he has up his sleeve. Neil what would be wisdom of that . He would want to get out of the e. U. On the 31st. It would be a messy no deal brexit. Of course he says we can handle it. Parliament says no, we have to get another extension. So we go around and around. Neil can they get frantic around it, where it is going . Absolutely fed up, those voted for it 52 feel like theyre cheated. Those voted against it we need another vote. What were get something not what we promised 3 1 2 years ago. Neil amazing. They wouldnt put this to the people again . I dont think so. It would be a terrible blow to democracy. Can question get off the deal extension. Trying to get the deal extension. Bore just johnson is the donald trump of the uk. Very unpredictable. Somewhat entertaining you could argue. He could do something completely out of left field. Im interested to see how it develops in the next two or three days. Neil meantime as we were, looks like the roosevelt room of the white house where, i have a long side the east room, i apologize, where you saw the Vice President sit down. Well hear from donald trump and his counterpart in italy im sure the italian president if england is out. Of course. Italians are leery of the eu, among those that want to leave. Neil all right. Center left president of republic of italy, and president of the United States, donald trump. Today, it is my honor to welcome president Sergio Mattarella of italy to the white house. Weve known each other for a while. Weve dealt with each other for a while and, weve had some really great conversations. We had a very productive discussion throughout the day with our staffs and representatives and i look forward to hosting the president and his daughter laura at a reception for italianamericans this evening. I look forward to that very much. The United States and italy are bound together by a cultural and political heritage dating back 1000 years to ancient rome. The italian people have blessed our civilization with magnificent works of art, science, philosophy, architech ture and music. On monday we pay attribute to the italian explorer who led a voyage of discovery to the new world, a gentleman known as Christopher Columbus and to me it will always be called columbus day. Some people dont like that. I do. Today the United States and italy draw strength from our cherished heritage as we Work Together to safeguard our people and promote prosperity as nato allies, our countries cooperate closely on a wide range of critical defense issues including the protection of our our against radical islamic terrorism. The problem is, that italy is only paying 1. 1 instead of the mandated 2 which by and of itself is a low number. It should probably be 4 , anywhere from 4 to 5 . Only eight of the 28 nato countries are paying the 2 . Meaning, 20 of the countries are delinquent in the payment to nato. And they have been for many years. Germany is at 1. 3 at most, depending on calculations. Spain less than 1 . Turkey believe it or not is almost current, almost paid up. And i want to just thank secretarygeneral stoltenberg because he is going around saying that President Trump was able to raise over 100 billion last year, which is true. But it is still only a large fraction. It is still a large fraction of the amount of money that is owed by many of the countries that arent paying their dues. We hope that italy will boost its defense spending in order to meet natos minimum 2 of gdp and i will say that they have just purchased and we learned about it today, 90 brand new beautiful f35s. The Strike Fighter program is doing phenomenally well. One of our major challenges and the challenge facing nato today is instability in the mediterranean, north africa areas. And much of the volatility in that region stems from the violence in libya which is very close to italys borders. President and i were talking about that at great length, a big problem. Ongoing libyan conflict led to a migration crisis, placing significant, unfair burdens on italy in particular. I asked the European Union get much more involved. Theyre not involved enough. That is a problem for the European Union. They do very well with us on trade. They had a trade surplus with the United States over the last five or six years of about 150 billion a year. They have to get more involved and the Italian Government has stepped up as a leader to fight this illegal immigration. We urge also our nato and European Partners to take firm action to halt illegal immigration and uphold sovereign borders. Immigration control is critical to National Security and essential to the wellbeing of our citizens. Nations must be able to vet, screen and properly manage entry and admission into society. You know the legislation that we had passed, we have absolutely no help from the democrats on our borders, absolutely nothing. The closure of loopholes which would be very easy to do, they refuse to do. They want open borders and italy doesnt want open borders and were not going to have open borders. Mexico and the president of mexico, want to thank for the great help theyve given us. They have helped us much more than the democrats. Here in the United States we are taking dramatic action to secure our borders, shut down Smuggling Networks and speed the removal of illegal immigrants. We are moving the ms13 gang members out literally by the thousands, theyre getting out, were dropping them out of our country and they cant come back. And what weve done with guatemala and honduras and el salvador is they tell me close to a miracle, the agreements that weve signed. We keep them back. Its a much different relationship than weve had with those three countries and i want to thank the leadership of those three countries. We have been working very well together. Our message is clear. If you enter illegally the United States, you will be promptly returned home. Theyre all returning home. Takes a long time because weve had years of people coming in, staying and thats the end of that. President mattarella and i discussed the steps to enhance Economic Growth between our two countries. Our nations are already investing nearly 70 billion in each others economies. Without the burdens, as unfair as they are, imposed by the European Union, that we would actually have a much higher number than 70 billion between italy and the United States, however, we can do more and we can achieve fairness and reciprocity which we dont have right now. Americas trade deficit with italy accounts for about 20 of our nearly 150 billion to 170 billion, probably according to some estimates could even be 178 billion annual trade deficit with the European Union. We welcome italys support for a mutually beneficial trade agreement with the eu that ensures a level Playing Field for American Workers and it hasnt been that for many, many years. I could solve the problem instantly but it would be too harsh. It would be too harsh. It would involve tariffs on european products coming into this country and for right now, were going to try and do it without that. But that would solve the problem instantly because the United States is not being treated fairly. We also welcome italys participation in combatting predatory trade and investment practices worldwide, especially in technology. We must Work Together to shield our intellectual property, critical infrastructure, ports and data security. I applaud italys recent commitment to use only safe and Trustworthy Technology providers, components and supply chains, especially relating to the 5g networks. We Work Together to take further steps to secure the technology of the future and speaking of 5g and how it relates to china, weve done a rather incredible trade deal, especially right now, phase one, for our farmers and for the finance industry, financial services, and its been really quite amazing. Excuse me . Is there a problem back there . Its been quite amazing. The level of receptivity has been much better than in the past. China and myself, our representatives, their representatives, have made a deal from 40 billion to 50 billion in farm products, agricultural products. People said we were hoping for 20. So china has been good and they have already started purchasing, by the way. Thats already started. The agreement, we hope to have it signed sometime prior to chile. We are going to chile. President xi and myself will probably do a signing over there, of phase one, assuming it all gets finished up which we think it will. Theres been a lot of good will between the United States and china over the last period of time so were signing from 40 billion to 50 billion and that will because it was incorrectly reported in the press, shockingly, that will flays, it take place, its already started flaig taking place. All the financial services, all the other things that are included and there are many other things in phase one that i wont talk about now, but all of that is moving along rapidly. Bob lighthizer is with us some place here and he is in the process of getting it completed. Have a great staff of people working on both sides. Mr. President , its a true pleasure to host you in our nations capital. You and your family and your deeply personal relationship to your country, you love your country so much, just in speaking to you for a short while, i see how much you love italy and i can understand that. Its really an inspiration and testament to the patriotism and pride of the italian people. Great spirit for italy. America is grateful to have true friends and allies in the citizens of italy. We have such a great relationship with the people of italy. The United States is likewise thankful to be home to more than 16 million italian americans. Tonight here at the white house, we will celebrate our deep and abiding friendship with italy and the really incredible italian people, the u. S. Italian alliance is stronger than ever before and we will be celebrating it tonight with you, mr. President. I look forward to that very much in a little while. In the meantime, thank you very much and we would love to have you say a few words. Thank you. [ speaking in italian ] neil we are waiting for the translation of this. I dont believe you have to be proficient in italian to say the italian president might be a little offended here. He is in the center left of the spectrum in italy, been a critic of the president when it comes to things like Climate Change and the rest. The president wasting no time saying that italy is a cheapskate, essentially saying its not paid its dues to the United States to help ensure the expenses of nato. Italy gives a little more than 1 of its gdp. The president has requested that all member nations kick in at least 2 . The president had been kicking around the idea of 3 or 4 but italy obviously isnt doing that. He also mentioned the trade deficit we have with italy right now. He didnt blame that exclusively on the italian president. Again, it was a more ceremonial figure. The Prime Minister called the shots in that country. Thats why he is only the twelfth president in the postworld war ii period in italy even though we have had 65 Prime Ministers, one of the busier turnarounds in power in italy. But again, these two have a chilly relationship, to put it mildly here, because they dont see eyetoeye on matters of financing in nato or how the European Union moves forward. Of course, its fair to say the italian president is a big fan of still being part of the European Union and not kicking out as the brits are contemplating doing as we speak. I believe we are getting the translation now. Lets go back. Translator due to the culture we share, and due to the very intense human relations we have between our fellow citizens. As President Trump mentioned earlier, we talked about nato. And nato is first and foremost a community of values, which italy recognizes and to which italy participates with a great deal of conviction, and italy has always contributed very intensely to Nato Missions and operations and with a great deal of effectiveness. Now we have substantially supported the activities of the alliance and i would like to remind you of the fact that besides being the fifth contributor to nato, italy is the second contributor in terms of the troops it devotes to Nato Missions and after the u. S. , we rank number two in the number of troops participating in nato operations, along with all the other missions we perform through the u. N. And in the coalition against terrorism which has developed in recent years. And i would like to remind you of the fact that as we speak, six italian f35s of the air force are patrolling the skies over iceland, within the framework of the second nato mandate, as a way of ensuring peace and security. Italy has constantly reiterated that the transatlantic spirit has to be nurtured, protected, with all of our strength and all the dimensions of the relationship we share, and with this spirit in mind, we hope, i hope that the new fiveyear parliamentary term within the new European Union, we can foster our cooperation on trade between the u. S. And the eu. We are aiming to define solutions that can strengthen our relationships, because commercial trade tensions are to the benefit of no one. We feel that imposing tariffs on one another mutually is counterproductive and it damages both of our economies and i would like to add that we share with the u. S. The belief that the wto should be reformed as a way of making it more efficient and more effective, and as President Trump mentioned, we talked about syria. We are deeply concerned with turkeys offensive in the northeastern part of syria, and this attack in a limited number of days has already caused a number of casualties and tens of thousands of refugees, and displaced people, and there were plenty of victims amongst civilians as well. This is an attack which also has another risk, namely that of offering new space which was unthinkable a few days ago to isis, and to its criminal terrorist activities in syria, in the middle east but not just in the middle east, also in other continents around the world. Italy, in line with the eus position, condemns the turkish operations which are ongoing. We have also talked about libya. And we talked about this topic as all of the other topics with a spirit of friendship and in a very tangible way. The Current Situation in libya is a source of deep concern to us, and we are convinced of the fact that the violence and the military attacks do stabilize all of north africa. It increases the threat of terrorism and it contributes to creating an environment which fosters all kinds of illegal trafficking, and of course, it jeopardizes the production of energy in that country, and most of all, it denies the libyan people the possibility of finding a peaceful solution which it deserves after so many years. We talked about our relationships with china together with President Trump and through an open dialogue with china, we want to defend the world order based on clear rules with the u. N. At the center of the world order, and an open and fair market, one which complies with the principles of the world trade organization, and from this point of view, we discussed two topics, namely security concerning new technologies, and im referring to 5g, italy has been paying close attention to our National Security requirements. It has paid close attention to it and it will continue to do so. We also underlined the need to have a level Playing Field in trade and in investments so that there can be a fair and healthy trade relationship. There needs to be an access to the market which doesnt discriminate anybody and we need to be able to protect intellectual property for all of the economic players involved, without any theft of technology. All of these topics were discussed with a full spirit of friendship, with a great deal of cooperation, along with many other topics, and this opportunity was also an excellent opportunity to reiterate the friendship between the u. S. And italy, and the very strong relationship between our two countries within the framework of the atlantic alliance. For that reason, want to thank President Trump very much for our meeting, for our talks, for your welcome, and ill be seeing you again this afternoon on the occasion which will be filled with a great many elements of meaning and importance. Thank you, mr. President. [ applause ] well, thank you very much, mr. President. And the wto, the world trade organization, as everyone knows, we just won 7. 5 billion because of unfair trade practices and that will be distributed in a fair way throughout various countries in europe and were talking to the president about that as it pertains to italy. He thought we were a little bit harsh on italy. We dont want to be harsh on italy. Well never do that. So well look at that very strongly. We will look at that for you. That was one of the requests made and we will be taking a look at that. Please. Reporter thank you, mr. President. I wanted to ask about turkey. Did president erdogans decisions surprise you and if they did not surprise you, would you make the same decision as you made before in moving u. S. Forces . I guess we just heard that the uaw and gm may have been able to work out a deal, if i can get your reaction to that and what that might mean for the u. S. Economy. And mr. President , if i could ask you about the digital tax. Did the two of you discuss a possible digital tax as it relates to amazon and google, what progress were you able to make on that front . Thank you very much. President erdogans decision didnt surprise me because hes wanted to do that for a long time. Hes been building up troops on the border with syria for a long time, as you know. Our soldiers are mostly gone from the area. We only had 26, 28, but under 50, i think its probably 28, but under 50 soldiers and which is a very tiny force, and it didnt surprise me at all. This is they have been warring for many years. Its unnatural for us but its sort of natural for them. They fight, and they fight long and they fight hard and they have been fighting syria for a long time and on the border, thats the border with syria, and i say why are we protecting syrias land . Assad is not a friend of ours. Why are we protecting their land . And syria also has a relationship with the kurds who, by the way, are no angels, okay . Who is an angel . There arent too many around. But syria has a relationship with the kurds so theyll come in for their border and they will fight. They may bring partners in. They could bring russia in and i say welcome to it. Russia went into afghanistan when it was the soviet union and it became russia, became a much smaller country because of afghanistan. You can overextend, you can do a lot of things but frankly, if russias going to help in protecting the kurds, thats a good thing, not a bad thing. But it would be led by syria, and syria doesnt want turkey to take its land. I can understand that. But what does that have to do with the United States of america . If theyre fighting over syrias land, are we supposed to fight a nato member in order that syria, who is not our friend, keeps their land . I dont think so. But syria does have a relationship with the kurds. The thing thats common is that everybody hates isis. Now, the pkk, which is a part of the kurds, as you know, is probably worse in terror and more of a terrorist threat in many ways than isis. So its a very semicomplicated, not too complicated if youre smart, but its a semicomplicated problem and i think its a problem that we have very nicely under control. We have two countries wanting their land. We have one country that wants land perhaps that doesnt belong to them because they want to have a 22mile strip of they call it freedom, call it a lot of things, they want to get terrorists out. You have another country that says you cant have our land and they are going to have to work that out. Now, with that being said, Vice President mike pence is going there, hell be leaving either late tonight or tomorrow, and he was going to leave yesterday but they have to have certain security done. Hes a very important man in our country and hell be leaving with secretary of state pompeo. We already have representatives there negotiating with turkey. We put massive sanctions on turkey and we have additional sanctions on turkey and when i ran, i ran on a basis were going to bring our great soldiers back home where they belong. We dont have to fight these endless wars. Were bringing them back home. Thats what i won on. Some people, whether its you call it the military Industrial Complex or beyond that, they would like me to stay. One of the problems i have and one of, for instance, with the witch hunt, you have people that want me to stay, they want me to fight forever, they do very well fighting. Thats what they want to do, fight. Lot of Companies Want to fight because they make their weapons based on fighting, not based on peace. And they take care of a lot of people. I want to bring our soldiers back home. Were not a police force. Were a fighting force. Were the greatest fighting force ever. I spent 2. 5 trillion over the last almost three years rebuilding our military. When i took it over it was a mess. It was an absolute mess. It was totally depleted. You know that. A lot of people know that. Honest people all know that. When i was thinking about having to do something, one of our generals came in to see me and said sir, we dont have ammunition. I said thats a terrible thing you just said. He said we dont have ammunition. Now we have more ammunition than weve ever had. We have more missiles, we have more rockets, our nuclear has been totally updated and in some cases, new. Hopefully to god we never have to use it but we have the most powerful nuclear base by far in the world and we have things that we never had before. We have a great modern military but that doesnt mean were going to waste it. It doesnt mean were going to deplete it like we did before with these crazy endless wars. So turkey and syria will hopefully work it out between themselves. Hopefully isis will be guarded. I spoke with, as you know, a wonderful man yesterday, general, from the kurds, you all know who im talking about, some of you have seen the letter that i put out to erdogan, i gave it to him, president erdogan, and some of you have seen it. With the general i said listen, dont open those doors and let them out just to create more havoc so that we come in, because some of those doors were just opened. Lets create some havoc and some political exposure for the president of the United States. We were the ones that got isis. Were the ones that took care of it, specifically me, because im the one that gave the order because when i came in, under president obama, isis was a disaster all over that area. I was the one that got them, we were the ones that captured them, and i will say this, that russia, iran, syria and to maybe a slightly lesser extent, turkey, they all hate isis as much as we do and its their part of the world. Were 7,000 miles away. I campaigned on bringing our soldiers back home and thats what im doing. That includes other places, too. Many other places. Statutorily it takes a period of time. Diplomatically it takes a period of time. But you know, were in many countries, many, many countries. Im embarrassed to tell you how many. I know the exact number but im embarrassed to say it because its so foolish. Were in countries, were protecting countries that dont even like us. They take advantage of us. They dont pay, nothing. You probably saw some of you wrote and covered the fact that we are sending some additional troops to saudi arabia. Thats true. I appreciate the fact that i negotiated for a short period of time, a matter of minutes, with saudi arabia and theyve agreed to pay for the full cost of all of that deployment and more. Much more. Very rich country. They should be paying and so should many other countries be paying if they want this kind of protection. Same thing with nato. We are at 4 and other countries are at 1 and certainly a european country benefits much more than we do with nato. Its there for a reason. And perhaps we benefit but not nearly as much as the European Countries. Some people say we dont benefit at all. We put ourselves in harms way but we do that for europe but then they treat us badly on trade. Not fair. So i would say that were in a great position. Were doing what i said. We have two countries that are going to argue over their border. Hopefully they will work it out. We are going to try and work it out. I think our Vice President , who is a very capable man, will do well tomorrow. Hes going to meet with president erdogan. President erdogan said he wouldnt meet with anybody and he took that back just a little while ago and he said no, i will. And i think they will have a successful meeting. If they dont, the sanctions and tariffs and other things that were doing, we will do and are doing to turkey, will be devastating to turkeys economy. I got pastor brunson home. Nobody else could do it. The Previous Administration tried very hard, they were unable to do it. I did it very quickly. And lets see what happens but i think well be successful but we got to get out of the endless wars. We have to bring our troops back home. I go to walter reed and i give out purple hearts, just did it on friday. I see the incredible soldiers coming home to dover, coming home in a coffin, on areas that we have nothing to do with. We have nothing to do with. And its heartbreaking. I sign letters all the time to parents whose son was shot in different places in the middle east, mostly. Its very heartbreaking to see. Very heartbreaking. So ive said it and its through strength, not through weakness. Much harder to do what im doing. I could be like all of these others, oh, just leave them there, leave them there. No, i cant do it. Much easier for me, probably politically better for me to say we will leave a lot of people there and well fight. They dont even know what theyre fighting for. Its much more difficult politically. Its not politically expedient. Its just the opposite. I have people even on my side, they want to fight. I say why are we fighting . I dont know. They dont even know. You have syria and you have turkey, theyre going to argue it out, maybe they will fight it out but our men arent going to get killed over it. One other thing. They have been fighting for hundreds of years. Its been going on for hundreds of years. So its a long answer, but i think ive gotten much of it out. Thank you very much. Please, question . Reporter thank you. Mr. President , i was asking if the two of you discussed possible digital tax and where that discussion might be going in particular as it might relate to google and amazon and others. Thank you, sir. Translator no, we did not talk about this. And of course, this is an open issue. Its very important. It is being discussed in a number of Different International contexts so that this important issue can be discussed and solved. The digital tax, i have to say, is interesting because i did discuss it with another European Union member, namely france, that france is basically doing the digital tax, and im no fan of those companies. They were against me. Somebody said i lost maybe two million votes, maybe more, because of facebook. But these are American Companies and whether you like it or not, theyre great big American Companies and im not happy with the digital tax, where france and European Union is taxing our companies and as you know, we imposed a big tax on french wine because of it. So just to answer your question, kevin, im not happy about the fact that they are taxing our companies. Im not a fan of those companies but if anybodys going to tax those companies, it should be the usa. It shouldnt be france and the European Union. Who have really taken advantage of the United States. Okay . Thank you. You can pick somebody, mr. President. Reporter as far as syria is concerned, in recent days, you talked about the risk europe runs in terms of not responding to the situation. In recent days, some European Countries including italy have discussed a possible ban on selling weapons to turkey. Do you think this could be an adequate way to respond to the situation . Also considering that turkey is and continues to be a member of nato. Reporter i would like to ask you on september 27, attorney general barr was in rome to meet with officials. I would like to know if you personally talked with Prime Minister conte to arrange this meeting, what kind of information attorney general barr was looking for and if you are satisfied with the intelligence gathered for you. Thank you. I dont know the details. I just know our country is looking into the corruption of the 2016 election. It was a corrupt election. Whether its comey or mccabe or strzok or his lover lisa page, the two great lovers, there was a lot of corruption. Maybe it goes right up to president obama. I happen to think it does. But you look at brennan and you look at clapper and you get some real beauties. I know theyre looking into the corruption. Obviously the ig reports coming out soon so well find out. I dont know anything about the meeting but certainly it would be appropriate because the word is, and you read it in the same papers that i do, that they did go to other countries to try and hide what they were doing. Italy may have been one of them. So you really have to ask attorney general barr. Okay . Thank you. Yes, turkey is a member of nato and that is something very important, of course. I would like to remind you of the fact currently there is an italian contribution to turkey. We have an antimissile system which italy has been having in turkey for a number of years within the context of a nato mission. Something more important than my friendship is the truth. The relationships or friendships and alliances of course dont mean that we cant say that the turkish attack is a serious mistake so we condemn that attack with no hesitation whatsoever due to the reasons i mentioned earlier. The solution, of course, doesnt lie in sanctions. If this continues, sanctions will be inevitable and italy has made announcements, as has the European Union, they want to stop all the dangers i mentioned earlier. John, go ahead. Reporter i want to pick up on what your comments on turkey and syria. Even after all you have seen, isis prisoners freed, all the humanitarian disaster, you dont have any regret for giving erdogan the green light to invade . I didnt give him a green light. Reporter did you tell him the same thing you just did, when you make a Statement Like that, so deceptive. Just the opposite of a green light. First, we have virtually no soldiers there. They were mostly gone. Just a tiny little group. They would have been in harms way. You have a massive army on the other side of the border. But more importantly, i didnt give him a green light and if anybody saw the letter which can be released very easily if you would like, i can certainly release it, but i wrote a letter right after that conversation, very powerful letter. He was never given a green light. They have been wanting to do that for years and frankly, they have been fighting for many, many years. When you ask a question like that, its very deceptive, john. Its almost as deceptive as you showing all of the bombings taking place in syria and it turned out that the bombing that you showed on television took place in kentucky. So you know, im not even sure that abc apologized for that but certainly, it was a terrible thing. Im looking at this, i say wow, thats pretty bad and it was in kentucky. It wasnt in syria. So i dont know what youre going to do about that. But i think abc owes an apology. Reporter Lindsey Graham just said of your remarks you made in the oval office that if you keep talking like that, quote, this will be a disaster worse than obamas decision to leave iraq. Lindsey graham would like to stay in the middle east for the next thousand years. With thousands of soldiers, fighting other peoples wars. I want to get out of the middle east. I think lindsey should focus right now on judiciary like the democrats, the donothing democrats as i call them, because they are doing nothing. They are getting nothing done. Theyre not getting usmca done, between canada, the United States and mexico. They are getting nothing done. I think lindsey should focus on judiciary. He ought to find out about what happened with comey, what happened with mccabe, lisa, what happened with peter strzok, what happened with president obama, what happened with brennan. Thats what lindsey ought to focus on. Thats what the people of South Carolina want him to focus on. The people of South Carolina dont want us to get into a war with turkey, a nato member, or with syria. Let them fight their own wars. They have been fighting for a thousand years. Let them fight their own wars. The people of South Carolina want to see those troops come home. And i won an election based on that and thats the way it is, whether its good or bad, thats the way it is. And if you look at this country, i would be willing to bet anything, political instinct that thats what the country wants. Im not going to get involved in a war between turkey and syria, especially when if you look at the kurds, and again, i say this with great respect, they are no angels. If you look at pkk, take a look at pkk, isis respects pkk. You know why . Because theyre as tough or tougher than isis. You take a look at a lot of the things having to do, you have to say it, nobody wants to say it, were making the kurds look like theyre angels. We paid a lot of money to the kurds. Tremendous amounts of money. We have given them massive fortunes and you know what . Its wonderful. They fought with us. But we paid a lot for them to fight with us. Just so you understand, we were the ones that captured isis. People let some go, they opened a couple of doors to make us look as bad as possible. We have a situation where turkey is taking land from syria. Syria is not happy about it. Let them work it out. We shouldnt be over there. And you should get your accounts correct and you shouldnt be showing up, buildings blowing up in kentucky, and say its syria because that really is fake news. Yes, please. Ask a question. Reporter you dont think the country is worried about isis . You mentioned earlier you think some other countries might hate isis more than the United States. Absolutely. Russia. Russia hates isis. Russia hates isis as much as the United States does. Iran hates isis. Were fighting a war for russia . Were fighting a war for iran . You look at syria, syria hates isis. Were over there killing isis and dont forget, were 7,000 miles away. So were killing isis, were 7,000 miles away. Russia is much closer. Iran is right there. Turkey is right there. They all, they all hate isis. Turkey, a little bit less so but the others, very much. Russia had a plane blown up by isis. Russia wants nothing to do with isis. Russias tough. They can kill isis just as well. They happen to be in their neighborhood. All im saying is this. Im not going to lose potentially thousands and tens of thousands of american soldiers fighting a war between turkey and syria. Syrias not our friend. Assad is not our friend. Thats the way it goes. Please ask a question. Reporter mr. President , you said you withdrew 28 troops. 28. They say it was 28. We thought it was 50 but it was about 28. 26 to 28 troops. Nobody injured. Listen, all accounted for, nobody injured, nobody missing. Its really nice. Reporter but look whats happened since those troops were withdrawn, since you had that conversation with president erdogan. Nyou know whats happened . No american soldiers have been killed, thats what happened. Other people will go in, very easy to recapture those people that probably the kurds let go to make a little bit Stronger Political impact, and thats okay. I fully understand it but thats the way it goes. Were bringing our soldiers back home and weve done a great job. We were supposed to be in syria for one month. That was ten years ago. And we have been a police force. Its time to bring our soldiers back home. Thats the way it is. Weve had no soldiers injured or hurt. Thats because im president. And were the boss. Just remember that. We have the most powerful military in the world. By far. Please. Reporter mr. President , what is the view in europe of the president s decision to withdraw, to make the abrupt decision to withdraw from syria . Translator i already answered that question regarding syria. Im not here to judge what other countries do. But to say what my countrys position is. And our position is what i mentioned earlier on syria, on the fact that we condemn what turkey decided to do to engage with no possible ambiguity. Translator a question for president mattarella. President trump seems to be open on discussing the possible tariffs, so do you think it will be possible to avoid tariffs being imposed in two days time . And a question for President Trump. Now, we all know your concerns concerning huawei entering italys security system. Are you satisfied with the measures that italy decided to implement . Well, ill answer first. Yes, i am satisfied. They have been very accommodating. They werent at the beginning and they have been since then. And i want to just thank the Italian Government and your Prime Minister, actually, in addition to the president , but as you know, i had long conversations with my friend and they were very nice. So i am very satisfied and we just discussed the same conversation with the president. Were very satisfied, thank you. Translator as far as the topic of tariffs is concerned, tariffs following the wto decision on the eus contribution or the subsidies to the consortium, i already mentioned what our belief is. Let me repeat it. I think that within the transatlantic relationship, and with a friendship that there has always been between the u. S. And the eu, it would be preferable to discuss our respective positions so that we can find a solution which takes into account the requirements of both parties and thats wholly possible. The alternative would be that of imposing tariffs. Currently, following the wtos decision concerning airbus, there may be tariffs and there may be tariffs in six months time concerning the subsidies given to boeing. This is a mere reach between tariffs, mutual tariffs. I think it would be best to meet and to deal with our mutual needs so that a solution can be fou found, but if we dont do this now, it will have to be done soon, and i believe it would be best to find a solution immediately instead of imposing tariffs, which would lead to other tariffs and that would be a damage to both of our economies. Well, actually, the tariff situation is interesting because we just, its like i said with china, it turned out to be true, we cannot lose a war of tariffs because the imbalance is so great between the United States and in this case, the European Union, also true with china, that turned out to be right. We have collected tens of billions of dollars of tariffs. We have given some to the farmers to make them even and now the farmers are going to have a bigger contract than they ever thought possible. They wont be able to produce even that much but i think they will because they are incredible and genius, as i say jokingly but probably not jokingly. Theyll just have to buy larger tractors which is probably what theyre doing right now. But the farmers come out so well. But in a war of tariffs with the European Union, the trade imbalance is so great that we cant lose that because they do much more business than we do and thats unfortunate, but the word reciprocity is probably my favorite word. Of all of these words, all of the semicomplicated, complicated, to me not complicated at all things that were doing, its got to be reciprocal and its not. The European Unions taken tremendous advantage of the United States. Many of us come through one way or the other through the European Union. Thats the good news. The bad news is they have been very smart. They have been very smart. Jeanclaude has been brilliant. Hes leaving, but hes been brilliant at really helping them and not helping us, and so thats changing now. But we cant lose that particular war of tariffs because the trade imbalance is tremendous. Its tremendous. And if you look at what they dont have, the barriers that they put up, they put up tremendous barriers to our doing business in europe. Tremendous barriers. Both from a monetary standpoint and what they call nonmonetary barriers. Its a very tough thing. Our farm products, very hard to get them in. Our cars, very hard to get them in. Yet they send mercedes, they send bmw, they send volkswagen, renault in the case of france. So its a very tough situation for us for many years but now its a very tough situation for them because i can remedy the situation very easily, and there really is not any financial counterattack. Hopefully i dont have to do that. With all of that being said, we are talking. We are talking with some new people in europe and i hope its going to be successful. That way we dont have to talk about it or worry about it, because our relationship should be a great one, but we have to be treated fairly on nato and we have to be treated fairly on trade with the European Union. Thank you all very much. Thank you. Neil all right. You have been watching something very unusual. Im going to introduce my panel in just a second. We are just reminding you, you dont often see the two principals, the heads of two sovereign countries, essentially going at it in diplomatic, very, very nice terms but the italian preside president , who holds a ceremonial position in italy, i wouldnt liken it to the queen in england but its very very close, you had only 12 of them in the postworld war ii period, i believe 65 Prime Ministers, but hes part of the Democratic Party in italy which is a coalition party, center left party, been very critical of this president not only in china trade and other issues but he took great offense to the president zinging him on whether italy has been a big enough contributor to nato, saying that italy has done more than its share for the nato commitment, saying that italy has always contributed. I would like to remind you, citing the president , besides being the fifth contributor, we are second in number of troops participating in nato operations, making a clear reference not germany, not england, not france, not anyone else, italy. So stick that in your cap. He was also making it very clear not a fan of what the president decided to do in turkey, saying look, we just see differently on this issue and when it came to that issue, he made it very very clear that the president has unleashed something maybe he did not intend. The president taking exception to that and reporters followup questions on the same issue that he sort of ignited this conflagration now in Northern Syria where the turks arent stopping, he is already going to be sending the secretary of state and Vice President to turkey to try to get an immediate ceasefire. President erdogan has already said he has no interest in doing so. But it is just a mess and this as diplomatic terms being played out in realtime tells you not everybody is on the same page, even in the same room at the white house where they normally are, and they sort of paper over those differences. Wall street Journal Editorial Board member bill mcgurn, Small Business and Entrepreneur Council president Karen Kerrigan and the man who did notice this very very closely, this sort of chill between the leaders, market watch columnist brett arenz. You guys were very patient through this. I appreciate that. But that was unusual. We dont often see that, do we . No. This is a new era in diplomatic relations and as we were commenting, when it was going on, its kind of interesting, now actually basically saying what they really think in public, as opposed to coming out with these bland statements in public and then telling the truth behind the scenes. So if this continues, this is going to be these things are going to be much more watched than in the past. Neil i would imagine, you were kind of recounting normally the process in earlier days was to be as bland and long as possible to avoid any friction, right . Well, to chew up the time with your Opening Statement so the press doesnt get as much time. I thought it was fascinating. Look, the president of italy was representing the dominant view in europe, i think, of President Trump. I think the interesting thing about that is i think donald trump was speaking to his american audience. It gave him an opportunity to explain his positions which were consistent with his past positions. I happen to not agree with his syria decision but i think he framed it as well as anything, im making good on a promise, i never promised that everything would be a rose garden in these places, thats why we want to get out, we shouldnt be there. Again, i dont agree with him but i suspect more people agree with him in the United States than agree with me. Neil the way he framed it, i dont want any more Young American men and women to die in ballo battles that never end. Thats why we decided to stay with this for the duration, the Economic Impact of what he was saying. We normally try not to mimic whatever the news channels do but we felt this was of such economic import, financial import and obviously, all those issues came front and center with funding for nato, funding for whats happening right now in Northern Syria, how the president is going to handle all of this, the ongoing problems with taxes that are going up on American Companies in europe. That is why we stayed with this walltowall and our panel was here, very patient through that. I hope you understand that. Karen, looking at it, there is friction here over this turkey decision and regardless of what bill sashgsys, i think hes rig the president is finetuning this for an american audience that have had it with wars, but he is jostling things up in that region and maybe thats the intent, but it is getting crazy now. Well, it is. The good news, though, is that erdogan, am i saying that right . He will be meeting with, right, with the Vice President which is good news. But you know, i found this president to be very refreshing and very frank which i thought was i think it is going to bode well for the future press conferences if they do these. Neil why cant he just admit, though, i mistook what happened . I might have goofed up on what i thought would happen . I think theres two things here. Neil hes sending the Vice President and secretary of state to turkey. If i can comment neil im not here to bash him or praise him but i think it would have been easy to say i didnt think they would go to this degree, im going to tell them i didnt really appreciate you going to this degree and but first of all, what he said hes going to do out on the campaign, hes done. I do think this is going to really resonate with the American Public in terms of and voters, in terms of were not being the worlds policemen anymore. Neil if isis is on the lose were not the piggybank anymore. We are not going to be taken advantage of. Neil he can do no wrong, right . No. [ speaking simultaneously ] neil im just saying, im not here to praise or bash him. Im just saying this looks good in the eyes of an american audience unless something happens with isis. Look, this is a president who actually has quite a coherent and consistent world view and actually someone i used to know years ago who is now one of the chairs of International History at Cambridge University wrote a book when trump was elected going back to everything trump had said since he was a young man about international relations. He has a very consistent, coherent world view neil hes consistent with this. Hes essentially the most isolationist president since herbert hoover. Im not saying that as a criticism. I know isolationism is a dirty word. Im saying when you go back before the second world war, go back before fdr, this was much more of the standard world view which was this is not our business. It may be terrible whats happening in x, y and z but this is not our business and if we are going to intervene or make a stand, we are more likely to hit these people with economic sanctions and tariffs than we are to send american troops overseas. Now, im not saying thats good or bad. Im saying this is a coherent world view. This is basically, it fits with what trump has said for a long time. Frankly, i dont think he had the ability to admit he had made a mistake even if he wanted to because when you are in a position like that, when you say look, i made a mistake, people have died and thats true of every american president , whether they make the right or the wrong decision. Any american president who says i screwed up, its not like i screwed up so we have to stay here all night in kinkos to fix the problem. Its i screwed up, people have just died. Neil the red line in the sand. You might disagree with the decision, as i do, but it is consistent. I dont think he believes he has made a mistake. I believe hes been, to himself, honest about what the consequences might be. Neil you think he foresaw these consequences . I dont think anyone foresees all the consequences. Neil we are told every genere mi general reminded him this is what would happen. [ speaking simultaneously ] let me finish. If you look at how hes cam pain campaigned, he looks and says i dont want to be the long wars of George W Bush but i dont want to be the weakness of obama. So hes willing to bomb syria, do shortterm things, but hes not willing to place troops. I think this is not good for america to place them in a longterm situation. A lot of our security has depended, we have longterm commitments in europe and asia and they have improved those regions a lot and the u. S. Benefited from it. Neil whether the italian president likes it or not. I think also his point is, isis may be a threat to us if one of these guys get here. Syrias a mess there. But thats italys problem. Its over there. Nato is about protecting europe. So hes saying they should step up and protect themselves. Its such a complauicated situation. It is very difficult to explain simply on the campaign trail why this is a major error except look, there are humanitarian issues. But when you look at the complexity of the situation involving the kurds, the turks, the syrians, it is extremely complex. I think that a lot of americans will agree neil very good. Instinctively with his view. Neil the dow down nine points after all of this. More after this. Driverless cars, or trips to mars. No commission. Delivery drones, or the latest phones. No commission. No matter what you trade, at fidelity youll pay no commission for online u. S. Equity trades. Neil all right. The one great thing about my job, i get to talk to people that ive always admired. I have had the opportunity, as have others, to talk to mike roe. You know him on so much, you see him on tv, but hes a great writer. I didnt realize his podcast had over 100 million downloads . Thats what they tell me. 110. Neil thats awesome. I have a little thing for podcasts. Anyway, hes got a book out which sort of puts pen to paper and the podcasts, the way i heard it, a lot of stories from these podcasts but the lessons, you know, he gleans from life. Sg so good to have you. After a conversation like you just had, to bring me in to really round out the geopolitical implications. Neil a guy like you, what was unusual about that, its rare to see two leaders next to each other who dont like each other. And they make it very clear. Honestly, the optics and the tenor and tone, i say im not an expert in any of this, but watching that, through the lens that you just described, people are going to feel good about it because for a lot of tangential reasons, i couldnt hear it because the volume was down neil the other guy was cursing in italian. When you curse in a foreign language, nobody knows. Neil lot of people go back to qvc days with you, selling stuff in the middle of the night. You had a skill set for reaching out to people. It does dovetail with what i was just watching with these two leaders. Its how you present your argument to people. How do you think the president does in that regard . Well, typically, he does not adapt or adopt what naturalists call a submissive posture. When a small wolf confronts a big wolf, a small wolf will lean back and say this is my belly, im kind of hoping you wont eat me. Neil if you dont mind. So there is in broadcasting, anyway, a measure of modesty or at least the illusion of it, that can be attained by embracing a submissive posture. I did that through desperation years ago in the middle of the night at qvc. It served me well in my career because it just manages expectations. Neil is it better than being fast on your feet, you have a great voice, i got here on my looks, as you know. Kilmeade, so jealous. Dont even get me going. But you said im not inquisitive im inquisitive, not aquisitive. What did you mean by that . Its all part of my charm. I meant that i have never felt properly aquisitive in the sense i never really craved stuff. My father was a monument to parsimony. Neil he was cheap, in other words. But he had no choice. I wouldnt say you were poor but you didnt have a lot of money. We didnt have a lot of money but to this day, the man will wring out a paper towel because by god, you can use that again. Neil have you enjoyed your money and fame, spent it . I have had money. I have had no money. Dorothy parker said i think its better to have it. Neil what do you splurge on . Honestly, the time. From time to time, you have to steal some time. This book was a weird kind of indulgence. I was really guilted into it because my mother wrote a bestseller last year at my urging. Now theres tremendous pressure in my Little Organization neil she was lecturing you on the plan for this book. All the downloads of people wanting to hear what you had to say and your mother said just dont regurgitate that, right . She said these stories are terrific. Your podcast is a hit, whatever. Heres what readers want. They want some honest reflection about what made you write about these famous people you have never met. Perhaps you could look into your own misspent youth and find something neil she was absolutely right. She got to the core of it. But its like lessons you learn. You never let your ego get out of control. Ive tried. Neil its one of the wonderful qualities i love about myself. The modesty part. How do you keep that in line . It reminds people of interesting stories, the paul harvey motif, the aha moment comes at the end. Its usually uplifting. Biographies are written through the lens of the rest of the story. Paul harveys old show. Look, history is a tough sell today. So is you have to do something to make the viewer or reader engaged. So im using that construct there. But mostly i wrote these things to compress time on an airline. Honestly,. Neil but you admitted not necessarily handy as background intimated . Not an admission. When you look at dirty jobs people conclude i can build a job or a house. Handy gene is recessive. What i got from my pop, the idea you approach the work as tradesman. Neil not too shabby. Not too shabbily. Wish i had more time, way i heard great guy. He get is it without the all the ego. If only Charles Payne could be that way. Im sorry bumping into your fine show but roe made we do it. Charles for roe, anything. Neil not for cavuto. Charles good afternoon, im Charles Payne. This is making money. Breaking at this moment, money talks, it may translate to the election outcome. A new Economic Analysis has President Trump steamrolling to 2020 victory as he gets update on china trade agreement. Plus after the Business Roundtable madedl
