The big show comes up in about eight hours when President Trump is expected to meet president xi xinping. Trade sources we need to keep expectations low for the meeting. The chinese say the meeting was under precondition, no tariffs, no additional tariffs be added on chinese imports. President trump pushing back on that personally. Head of chinese trade delegation, liu he, was seen going into the tame hotel where the trade delegation is staying. The two delegations were set to meet before the two president s get together. President she expected to say that the tariffs, all tariffs need to be rolled back before china is ready to agree to any other concessions. Also sanctions on huawei, they would like to see lifted, ideally within the next 90 days. The two sides seem pretty far apart. President trump will try to bridge the gap personally when he makes this meeting. Back to you. Charles edward, thank you very much. Jonathan, let me start with you, we heard a couple days ago about these demands xi was making ahead of this, now huawei becoming a pivotal component whether or not we get a deal. How important is that and what do you make of the idea that there are preconditions from the china side . Well i think the preconditions are things that we cant really give away. You had all of our National Intelligence chiefs testify, essentially say huawei is dangerous, its a link to the chinese state. You cant have it building american systems, you dont want it building the systems of our allies around the world but meanwhile it depends on u. S. Technology. Between the long term competition between the china and United States, you have running on american technology. When you have things on entities list, were cutting them off, slowing down momentum geopolitically. You have to slow down chinas geopolitical juggernaut. This is linked to the trade deal. They want to be back in action and they shouldnt do it. Charles gordon you told me on more than one occasion this would be a mistake. It is interesting the bravado that huawei will be a world class company, their media dominates. Just idea xi put that in there, maybe it is hurting them . Maybe its an acknowledgement, we need huawei to be successful. Certainly is an acknowledgement this has hurt huawei. Huawei has stopped the announcements of certain products like laptop and other things. But the important thing here, charles, essentially xi xinping is setting preconditions for a deal. He has been doing this publicly since the end of may. There has been a campaign saying this is what a deal must have for china to sign it. That is couple things. He doesnt want a deal because the conditions he wants as jonathan point out are unacceptable to us, or he thinks he can actually force President Trump to capitulate. I think he is certainly wrong on that. Essentially what were going to see then,. Charles right. Maybe an agreement for talks but no deal going forward. Charles i dont think anybody is expecting a deal but certainly a new glide path toward a deal, getting this whole thing back on track, if you will. But, would it be capitulation with respect to huawei since President Trump already said it is possible it could be part of an ultimate compromise or resolution . I think what it does, it shows the schism in american strategy between business and national security. What we had for a long time had strategy, business engaged, national security, make sure balance of power in pacific remains in our favor. That is breaking down. Charles 600 ceos, write letters, put out ads, control the media. Big business has a much bigger megaphone, if you will, than the security apparatus. It does but in the end you cant have big business at odds with the longterm interests in the United States. There is a reckoning that will happen. Charles when did that change . Listen, this is what is all about. If wasnt for big business looking for cheapest source of labor we wouldnt be in the situation in the first place. They will protect their interest. If it means embarrassing the president on the eve of meeting with xi. What came out from the Business Community has not helped president s negotiating leverage at all. No it hasnt. You had a letter of 661 trade associations and companies but it is important who wasnt on the list. There are really important players who didnt sign. I think that the important thing here, charles, you step back, is that companies in fact are disengaging from china. Theyre moving their factories out. That is his way of needling the press but of course they have taken it. Now there is narrative being built around it. Right. They were needling him there. The media seems to be singularly focused on the fact that the russian government meddled in our election. They did that. President trump said they did that. The u. S. Government sanctioned the russian government on that. The reason theyre focused its a way to delegitimatize President Trumps election that is the only reason for it. President Trumps Administration has been tough on all other maligned things russians have been doing. Confiscating ukrainian ships and ukrainian sailors, which President Trump canceled last meeting over the specific issue. Arming ukrainians. Trying to deter russia because theyre modernizing the Nuclear Force. I just met with the director of the Defense Intelligence agency, the russians tested a Nuclear Weapon inconsistent with a zero yield standard. There is bigger fish to fry. President trump is focusing on those things and media brought up the issue. Charles what exactly does that mean, zero yield . Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty was a treaty the United States did not ratify, but has not signed. Other countries did that. It states you cannot test a Nuclear Weapon that creates a yield at all because weve agreed that is a dangerous thing. The russians now we believe have been doing that. So why are they doing that . They are doing that because they dont have a large economy on us. They have been focusing a lot of resources and money on the Nuclear Force because they cant compete with the United States on their conventional weapons that is concerning. That is priority for the United States government. The russians cheat on armies control treaties. The russians focus on Nuclear Weapons. This is something President Trump committed to working on with secretary pompeo. It is par more important than anything else. Russia will try something in the upcoming elections. To what degree if the administration is to blame they cant stop it . I think we should be incredibly vigilant now. That does not mean that the russians earned votes against hillary clinton. That seems to be the message that the democrats are hammering. There is no evidence that happened. I do think the oust government needs to be serious about monitoring it, calling it out whenever it happened, increase sanctions. Also having a cyber response. We do have to make sure we do everything that we can to make sure that the american elections, that is a family issue. That is not anything that we want foreign adversaries to meddle in. Now, senator harris, artful, crafty, she put him on the defensive. He did not have a thoughtful answer. It lacked compassion. What you see now is individuals, news media, outlets, going back into his past and looking at his voting record. The truth is busing was controversial not only for segregation its but also nor the black community. Segregation its didnt want busing for obvious reasons because they are racist but black folks did not want busing either, they felt you take away some of their best and brightest students out of the community. They wanted government to allocate resources properly to their communities and not bus children outside of it. So there is a context allization of the discussion joe biden completely missed. Charles he might have gone there. Someone could have brought up the crime bill. It could have gone on all night. Because he is on damage control right now. Just moments ago he defended himself. I assured Voting Rights, equal rights, are enforced everywhere. These rights are not up to the states to decide. They are federal governments duties to decide. I think he is contradicting himself here. Joe biden didnt do himself any favors. He was very much on defense during the whole night. He knew he was on defense. If he has any chance of trying to run away with the nomination he has to go on offense. That means Kamala Harris outed herself as his prime target. She can go after him in terms of being prosecutor, being San Francisco district tone, California Attorney general into a positive. She prepped very well for this debate. But one thing he could go after her for, separation of families, imprisoning parents from habitually truant children, going after her office when she was California Attorney general for basically opposing a statewide mandate to not investigate Police Shootings of unarmed individuals. Do you think any Movement Made with respect to potential voters . I think so. Joe biden lost a few point in that debate, he still got to be, still the front runner. I believe senator harris picked up a number of new interest, new interest people, even folks on radio show today calling charles, hey, im looking at senator harris as a viable candidate against President Trump. So she definitely did herself a lot of favors in this debate. Charles of course the republicans are sitting back taking notes. Kamala harris, according to many white house officials, i mean she is formidable candidate. There is no question that she has a very good chance to, if not, get the nomination charles new primary system, starts in california, early state now. Biden is currently leading in california. Black voters as a whole he has significant block, specifically in South Carolina. If he does really well in South Carolina charles tell you that right now. That is older black folks. Read essence magazine, last issue, read the root, all the young black media outlets, rashad, tell you younger black votes are not excited about him. You have radio listeners tell you that. Bloomberg says the proposal would be done in a way that bypasses congress, takes effect before President Donald Trump faces reelection in 2020. Hillary vaughn at the white house to explain exactly how the tax break would work for investors. Hillary . Reporter charles, the president hinted he wanted to do this for quite a while. The Vice President s chief of staff, mark short telling me does think Capital Gains should be indexed but says that conversations to push this through are really in the infant stages right now. He has not talked to the president directly bit. But reportedly white house officials are on a tight timeline because they want to push this through before the 2020 election. So that the impact and benefits of this hit before the president faces reelection in november. So, indexing Capital Gains would slash tax bills for investor when they sell stock and real estate, adjusting purchase price, no taxes on appreciation tied to inflation. Critics of the idea say it mostly benefit the 1 and it could push investors to sell. Joining Chuck Schumer voting for this amendment that had Capital Gains indexing was nancy pelosi. Well have to see if they have a change of heart now. Netnet would it have positive impact on all of society . Too soon to tell but what we know, it set as precedent of tieing a tax benefit to inflation, which hasnt been done before. When you think about a tax policy issue it is really about incentives. While more investment is a great incentive we have to understand whether this particular policy leads to more investment first of all and how much does it cost second of all. Until we answer both of those questions we really cant ascertain the value of it. Charles shah, i think it was 1969. Maybe 10 people who hadnt paid taxes. An article was written. Soon we had amtt wasnt indexed for inflation. Two decades later, hundred of thousands, millions of americans are paying onerous tax. The idea of indexing a tax to inflation seems to be smart in a lot of ways . I never met a tax cut i didnt like. This one may be the exception in the timing of it. I dont think it is time for the president to pull this out now. Not certainly do it by executive order. I think that will give some fodder to the democrats, to go after the president , as being tied to the 1 . I dont think timing is good. Im not so sure it is such a great idea anyway. I would like tax cuts pretty much across the board, however this one seems to be a bridge too far for me. Charles all right. Lets shift to the recordbreaking month for the markets. S p 500 on track for the best june since 1955. The dow, its best june since 1938. We have mixed messages today, but very important Economic Data out. Consumer sentiment was better than anticipated. Only Thing Holding it back was talk of tariffs. Ironically hurt top 1 3 household incomes. Income was up. Spending was up. Savings rate 6. 1 . That seems like perfect. That is what you want. Incomes up, people to spend it, not all of it, save it. Chicago pmi manufacturing number went to contraction. The big National Numbers on monday. I believe if we see that happen again, that is enough for the fed to start thinking about 50 basis point cut. What do you think . Charles, that is exactly right. All Economic Data is now through the lens whether or not the fed will cut rates in terms of markets. Charles right. Consumers are 70 of the economy. Manufacturing is 20 of the economy. When i have a bet to make, i bet on the consumer. Weve seen Consumer Spending hold. We see a very tight labor market. Were seeing steady wage gains. Those conditions are in place for consumers to keep spending, keep supporting economic expapping shun. That is good support for equities. Charles shah . I dont think there is a reason for a cut of 25 basis points. Certainly not a 50 basis point cut. Consumers are doing very well. Spending is under control. The only thing were afraid of is fear itself, oneoff pmi number from the chicago pmi might be indicative of economy going down. I dont believe it. I dont see it. Consumers are in good condition, great shape. Spending as we touched on under control and confidence is still high i dont see any need for cut. Charles i have less than a minute, i have to ask both of you, headline of truce on monday of the meeting between xi and trump and negotiations back on track what does it mean for the market. Traders can go on vacation to sleep well at the beach. This is not a one and done. Whatever happens over the weekend expect more to come because this is a complex deal. The fed may be concerned about all the trade tension going on right now. Ahead of 2020 trump really needs to keep Economic Growth going. So you know, the potential lowering of Interest Rates would be a great thing for him as long as we dont have a recession for pull blown trade war. Ed good news these gangs are buying back stock. Their stocks are undervalued and they see a rise in earnings value. This is good thing. Charles weve seen companies bought back their stocks at the wrong time, right . Gamestop started buying shares back at 56 a share. Theyre five now. Ibm wasted 10 of billions of dollars on buybacks instead of refiguring the company. Instead of buying red hat 10 billion more than they had to. Some people are saying it is not because they think there is an opportunity but its a backdoor way of Rewarding Company officers and, the investment class. Of course with the officers, if they get rewarded in stock. The very first speech joe biden gave on this campaign he mentioned stock buybacks. Sure. Listen, like a lot of these other platforms, they got so large, its all liberals who work there, and its kind of out of control right now. In fact, there was one rogue twitter employee who actually temporarily shut down his twitter account so basically, twitters saying in the future because of all this criticism of politicians, that they say they get a free pass in terms of bullying and threats that are made on twitter, but you know, twitters excuse is look, this might be in the interest of the public so its hard, you dont want to censor it but you also dont want this type of behavior on the platform as well. In the future they will do something called flagging. If they see something that violates the platforms rules, they will basically kind of like adult content right now, its all blurred out, it says sensitive matter and you have to click in, basically you accept the rule before you see what the tweet says.
