Monday is when the deadline looms. Where do things stand right now . Yeah, monday is fast approaching. You know, the president as you see right there is back in the United States now at joint base andrews. We expect him here any minute now after gets off the plane, back to the white house. Now, he says that if we get a deal with mexico, they will buy more agriculture from the United States, if we dont, then the tariffs will go into effect. Now, thats a little confusing, that tweet that he put out, thats because this is supposed to be about illegal immigration coming to the southern border and mexicos help with illegal immigration. The negotiators are working today on the asylum part of this, having Asylum Seekers wait in mexico before their Court Hearing here in the United States. As of right now, the plan is to impose those tariffs on monday. The president has all the options on the table. But talks have been very collegial, amicable, and, you know, my briefing on them has been that theres been a lot of progress where our technical experts who have really taken a deep dive into what the mexicans could do to help get out in front of the border problem, the mexicans have agreed to do a lot. And the Vice President s chief of staff says that the Vice President and secretary of state offered two suggestions to the mexicans, which today he says they accepted those suggestions. The mexican president came out saying they dont want a conflict with the United States, and hes optimistic that a deal could be worked out. Add that with 6,000 troops inside mexico now being sent to their southern border, as a gesture to show the americans that they are working towards this. Now, the president or Vice President s chief of staff echoed the optimism that the president has. Were encouraged on wednesday that they came to the table with some initial suggestions. But i think we felt that it was wholly insufficient, what they put on the table at that point. Vice president pence and secretary pompeo put a few other suggestions for them to consider, and yesterday came back i think very open to those recommendations, and so were very encouraged as to where the negotiations are going, but there frankly is still a long way to go. And i can tell you as of right now, there are no plans for the president to actually meet the secretary of Foreign Affairs from mexico, who is here. The president of mexico says that their delegation will be here as long as it takes to work out a deal. Back to you. David of course they are waiting for the president is probably nothing is going to happen until he arrives. Again, he is due to step off that plane any moment. We will keep the pictures up. The white house by the way say they are making progress. We want to bring in former Trump Campaign senior trade and jobs advisor curtis ellis. Curtis, clearly on a lot of fronts, it appears that the mexicans are offering whether or not they can be substantiated is another question, but they are coming up with offers. Could this only have been achieved through the threat of tariffs . Absolutely. The mexicans respond to pressure. The mexican elites who profit from the economy of mexico understand economic pressure. And thats what these tariffs have done. Its gotten their attention and brought them to the table. Look, mexico has never allowed migrants from Central America to cross its southern border and settle in mexico, so theres no reason that they cant stop them from crossing the border to transit mexico to come to the United States. So this is, again, it shows that President Trump knows how to negotiate, knows how to apply pressure. It may seem brutal. It may seem ruthless, but thats what gets results. This is not a debating society. International affairs is a very transactional business. And the mexican elites know what hurts. David, i really agree with what curtis had to say. This was a very tough and fierce negotiation. The president indicating while he was away that he would impose those tariffs, not backing off of that stance for even a second and being very clear with his staff that was negotiating here with the foreign secretary of mexico, what he wanted. The bar was set very high, and he has been saying if that bar is not met, he will go through with this. What i thought was interesting was his tweet today, some of the language there. He always leaves it just a little bit open for interpretation. He said if were able to make a deal with mexico. Thats a nice way of putting it jackie. Theres a good chance we will. My take on this is the president either today or sometime over the weekend will come to some decision on this and let the markets and everybody else be aware of what hes thinking, but he really was very tough because he wants to push this through. One final point that pivot that edward mentioned david jackie, forgive me, but we want to point out this is a live shot of the president , and Melania Trump getting off of the plane. This was a much more successful trip than anybody in the Mainstream Media at least forecasted. They were predicting doom and gloom. The Washington Post came out with a lead editorial on tuesday suggesting that it was going to be the worst state visit to the u. K. Ever. On the contrary, it was a very successful visit. The president meeting with the queen at a state dinner that was very successful. The meeting with political figures in the u. K. And then the extraordinarily successful anniversary yesterday of dday and a meeting with french president macron. So this was a very very good visit, and if the president speaks, when he gets back to the white house, we will take you there. Jonas, go ahead. You wanted to say something. I kind of want to go off of what jackie was saying. I think the president is being tough but my concern is hes being so tough that he will ruin the other tough negotiation, which is basically nafta, it was redone in a better way, i think it was an improvement. Using tariffs against the migrants seems like thats a trade issue. Could the president maybe use sanctions for Something Like that, why use trade tariffs for a nontrade problem with a country . David, may i weigh in on that . David please. I think curtis made a very good point on this and used an interesting word, curtis, which is that this is transactional. I think you made your point effectively and that answers jonas questions, and i think thats a shame. I think thats exactly the wrong way to treat a friend and an ally which is transactional. So if you have an immigration policy dispute, then you engage on immigration policy. If you have an economic dispute, you engage on economic policy. And thats not the way were doing it. And i predict this will come back to bite the United States when our friends know that we do not deal with them as friends. We deal with them as transactional adam, it is a little economic when they let people in our country who are working below our wage levels, that is an economic thing. David thats right. Even though it is immigration, i dont think its ir rational to make it about economics but i want to visit a better path to save the new north africa t tty save the nafta. Congress recognizes it cannot respond in an international emergency. It debates and dithers, goes through a Committee Hearings tariffs arent emergency actions, you know that. Whatever means necessary i know, but youre just being legalistic without saying anything. Congress has not done its job. The president is doing his job, and hes applying pressure where it makes a difference. David by the way, congress is not going to be doing its job until the election. I mean it is clear that congress and the president are not going to be working together because they dont you are making my case. Thats why the president had to impose tariffs to get some action out of mexico. David they dont want any kind of success by the president legislatively, but i havent heard from gary. Well, thank you, david. I kind of agree with i guess im right in the middle of adam and curtis on this one. You know, curtis makes a good point. We have fought National Security issues with economics kind of per jonass point. We have had sanctions and tariffs with everyone from north korea to iran, so we have done that in the past to curtis point, but i think adams bigger issue and one i agree with is this is not how you specifically treat an ally. Im not sure if we would do the same with someone like israel. It just kind of goes against the grain, and the bigger point, the other point that i want to make is that, you know, we talked last week, why are these people trying to come into the country . They are trying to better their lives. Theyre trying to get jobs. Lets stipulate that we have a crisis. The problem is it is like trying to stop water from a hurricane seeping into your house. Its almost impossible. Im convinced we can put 6,000 troops there. We can put 60,000 or mexico can. 60,000 troops there very good point. If people want to better their lives, they will find a way in. You will find if we completely close the border, people will build makeshift rafts and sail their way into florida. David there are always hold on a second. There are always ways around border. I agree with you 100 gary. Exactly. David but at the same time there are specific steps that have been taken over the past couple of years that have made the situation a lot worse, and one of them is the catch and release asylum policy. Thats been disastrous in terms of putting out the word in the rest of latin america and elsewhere in the world that the u. S. Is an easy place to get into, and hold on a second hold on a second, i havent finished. The thing thats changed with mexico right now is they theres been great progress on that asylum issue, which we know wont pass congress, but they now say that Central Americans would have to seek asylum in the first country they set foot in, and curtis, that is a huge change on the part of the mexicans, if they actually agree to that. Isnt it . That is a huge change, and thats the Way International law stipulates. Look, if these people, these Asylum Seekers are seeking refuge from abuse of spouses or Gang Violence or persecution of some sort, well, then when they go to mexico, theyve escaped that persecution. They are coming to the United States for economic reasons. Weve got better welfare benefits, better social benefits, better job opportunities. No one disputes that. Great, thats wonderful, but thats not a Carte Blanche to come into this country. Im sorry it doesnt work that way. If they want asylum because they have been given a script by the human traffickers, the drug cartels who also have a Side Business of human trafficking, give them a script and say ask for asylum, bring a kid with you, and you get a get out of jail free card in the United States, they can stay in mexico. Once that word gets around that youre not going to get into the United States, youre going to be stuck in a camp in mexico, you will see this conveyer belt stop. You will see david weve got to move on. Curtis, we thank you. I want to get a final word from jackie. Jackie, are people there optimistic that something is going to happen over the weekend . They are optimistic that something is going to happen here, and actually a lot of folks are pointing to the weak jobs numbers today, saying this was not necessarily the time to impose tariffs like this, that the president should take it slow. So the hope is that one way or another, he will just at least end the anticipation and give us something so we know. David if we dont get something done over the weekend, the tariffs begin on monday. Curtis ellis, great to see you. Have a great weekend. Meanwhile, Michael Bloomberg is announcing a major investment in coal in the u. S. What does the coal industry think about all this . We know the closing every last u. S. Coal fired power plant over the next year is achievable because were already more than halfway there. Through a partnership between bloomberg and the sierra club, weve shut down 289 coal fired power plants since 2011. David when you got to spend it, billionaire and former new york city mayor Michael Bloomberg at m. I. T. Today launching what he calls quote the largest ever coordinated campaign against Climate Change in the u. S. His goal is to bring an end to the coal industry, straight out. Joining us now is chris hamilton, Vice President of the West Virginia coal association. So chris, how do you respond to this well, david, were very, extremely disappointed in hearing that today. You know, weve been through perhaps we thought the darkest days were behind us given the previous administrations attack and war on our business. Frankly, were real disappointed in the mayor that he would select to come after our coal miners and our coal mining families in the states like West Virginia that rely so heavily on coalfired electric generation and coal mining and all the support jobs that really drives our economy here. And were not alone. Theres 14 or 15 states like the state of West Virginia where coal and coal mining and coalfired electrical generation plays just an enormous role within our local and statewide economies. Chris, as an ex pennsylvania boy, i can feel your pain for sure. But, you know, one of the attacks on coal is that its a climate disruptor, if you will, but on the flip side, all these, you know, solar and water have been supported by the government. Isnt it true, and maybe there this is a loaded question, that when you take out the government support, coal is one of the most, if not the most, Cost EffectiveEnergy Solutions even when you tack on the epa restrictions . It absolutely is. Theres no question about that. When you put a coalfired, particularly one of the coalfired plants that are left in operation, these are state of the art plants. They have virtually zero emissions that come from their emissions stream today, practically all contaminants have been removed and, you know, these are clean burning plants, Clean Coal Technology at its best and they do compete, and in fact typically, you know, resulting greater efficiencies and production from these plants because of how efficient they are. And when you put them on the free market without subsidies, theyre clearly, you know, what results in the most cost savings and efficiencies. Chris, adam with Fortune Magazine in san francisco. I apologize for interrupting you just then. You know, no one this is a difficult topic for you. I appreciate the fact no one likes to see their industry attacked for any reason. Two quick questions, one, my sense is that natural fracking is as big a threat to coal as anything the Obama Administration did or that Mike Bloomberg is doing. Thats number one. Number two, will you have a dialogue with bloomberg and say, hey you got a lot of money, what can you do for my people . Hes not after your people. Hes after coal well, thats coal mining. It is not just my people. I understand. Its an exceptionally large segment of our American Industrial base and fabric. Theres over 100,000 miners directly involved in producing coal. And you put you include the multipliers, you are over a million individuals, hardworking americans that are mining coal, providing for their families and their response for this extraordinary quality of life that we enjoy is because of the affordable electricity. Basically its come from coal all these years. But isnt natural gas as big a problem for the quality of the life of coal miners as anything else . The competition from cheap natural gas . We welcome that competition. Again, we believe in the free market. We welcome that competition. We also think it is healthy to have a certain renewable portfolio that we have. I mean, we support and embrace york know, all forms of energy. We support and embrace all forms of energy including nuclear power. We believe it takes all forms of energy to produce every watt to sustain all the power we consume. It cannot happen that you can power this country and all of our industrial and household needs by renewables alone. And thats whats being advocated by mr. Bloomberg. Hes advocating renewables and increased nuclear of all things because you cannot go without fossil fuel production today chris, jonas ferris. I think it is an element of nonsensical as well because you are exporting the coal i believe to india and china in increasing numbers where it is going to get burned and do the same damage to the globe. I dont see the net Global Warming benefit. May be some local pollution benefits. If all the growth is going to china, are you worried with the trade war with china expanding to a level where exports of coal to china would start to decline . Is that a concern in the industry . Well, trade barriers and trade wars, you know, theres obviously some concern. But weve seen American Steel and our domestic Steel Production rise substantially here over the past 18 months or so. And you make a great point. You know, it doesnt do it doesnt do us very much by way of reducing Carbon Emissions when, you know, the whole pacific rim, asia, china, korea, they are responsible and consume seven, eight times the amount of coal that we produce in this country today. Think of that in terms of Carbon Emissions, seven or eight times more come from those developing countries. And it just doesnt make any sense to us whatsoever to ratchet down our own economy, our quality of life here and place greater Financial Burdens on our taxpayers who are going to have to pay for a complete change, a wholesale change in our electric grid, and i believe theres legitimate Homeland SecurityNational Defense issues thats also embodied or quite vivid frankly in mr. Bloombergs proposal. David chris, we have to move on. Jackie, i owe you one because we run out of time for the segment. Chris, we thank you for coming in. Please come back and see us again; all right . Absolutely. David thank you very much. The gloves are off. Ive tried to be nice to her because i would have liked to have gotten some deals done. Shes incapable of doing deals. Shes a nasty vindictive horrible person. David other than that, hes crazy about her. President trump firing back at Speaker Pelosi after reports that she said she wants to see the president in prison. So guys, does this bad blood kill any chance for an infrastructure deal or any kind of deal . It absolutely does. At least in my opinion. Look, nobody likes the name calling. He does it, but she definitely does it too, david. But i dont think really the expectation is that a lot will get done right now in terms of bills passing in congress. The president tried to do as much as he could in the first two years when he had the house and the senate. He did. He deregulated. He passed tax reform. Now what hes doing and you can see it evidenced in some of his trade deals and how hes dealing with mexico, because he knows he will be blocked by other measures, he is trying to go about it in all different ways. I think part of our discussion a little bit earlier was this was an unconventional way of dealing with an immigration issue. I think his hand has been forced to deal with it in this kind of way because he knows he cant do it working with congress. I think a very rare opportunity was thrown away by both sides to do a large infrastructure deal. I think they had the democrats had a president , thats probably one of his areas of competency, seeing a large project to that level; now were going to have to wait till a recession where they will panic and get something together in five minutes is not a well thought out plan. I understand where she thinks shes going because they said lock her up, hillary, and shes doing, but i think they are both out of line. Its going in a third world direction. Im so sad for the whole country. Someone needs to say it, the president of the United States at a cemetery ground in front of fallen american soldiers refusing to take the high ground and making nasty statements about the speaker of the house, not being the bigger man, but i think just the opposite, that they will say all the things they want to say. Shes clearly gotten under his skin, which is interesting. But they will come together, if its in their interests and i think it will be in their interests. They both want to do something for their constituents. Thats my prediction. Adam, unfortunately, as opposed to the first segment, im in complete disagreement. All right, thats fine this is now and you can see it in both the Mainstream Media and on the left, this has become personal. The left is still livid that what they view as they would say someone like trump beat their candidate, how could this rug wearing if he does wear one person become president. Its now personal. Theres no chance for as long as trump is president that they will give him any victory despite being good for both sides. Gary, they arent in this debate. This is between lets just say for the moment trump and pelosi, they are the ones in the debate. Not the left wing. But pelosi is probably the more central or centrist person on the left. Were agreeing with each other. Do you think an aoc or somebody is going to give him the time of day . Shes not at the table in the conversation. David what happened to the market folks who liked it when theres gridlock, when there was no action . I understand theres things that need to be done. Immigration is one thing that needs to be done. Prescription drugs whether you re dealing with overprescription or prices or whatever, there are certain things but generally speaking doesnt the market like it when they dont do anything inside the beltway . I know i do. I dont want an infrastructure plan. You are talking about the same organization that cant get the Homeland Security building built for under 20 trillion dollars . Yeah, im all for that, david. Id rather there be gridlock in that case. Actually the market does perform better when there is gridlock in washington because it knows it doesnt like uncertainty in any way. If a deal is pending and they dont necessarily know the details of it, that can sometimes cause confusion. The gridlock in some sense is certainty, so stocks actually do perform better. I want to make the final point that a lot of president s have dealt with the same issue and not necessarily been able to push things through, but again, the president has been able to do a lot with the time that he had, and, you know, again, with nancy pelosi, no, on infrastructure, shes not going to help him out. She does not want him to have a win on this, no way. David by the way, this has been happening when they are out of the country. Imagine when they are both back in the same city and the president is due to arrive at the white house at any moment. The press has set up microphones where his helicopter arrives, marine one. David breaking news and our Washington Team is telling us that the president stepped off marine one at the white house, did not speak to reporters. He just shook hands with some of his supporters who were there. He was asked several times about what was going on with mexico, with the negotiations. He appeared to be saying were doing well, but it was hard to tell with all the sound from the chopper. Well, meanwhile, now state attorneys general are jumping in on the big tech pileon. The wall street journal reporting between 12 and 20 states are now preparing for their own antitrust investigations into the tech titans. That would be google, facebook, amazon, and apple, following similar announcements by the doj, ftc and congress. Is a big tech break up inevitable now . Well, i dont think a breakup per se is inevitable or anywhere near happening. That said, david, merely the fact of all of these different negotiations at the state and the federal levels, and the state actions by the way are not new. They have been going on for at least a year. Very important things going on in california, for example will cause these companies a ton of grief, a ton of money, a ton of time that will be distractions from their business. Thats what happened to microsoft in the 90s, and today we have google and facebook partly as a result. Yeah, i tend to agree with that. For a bigger reason. You know, most attorneys general, all they are are governors in waiting. They want to take they see big tech now like spitzer saw wall street, like the attorney general saw the tobacco companies. This is an easy thing for them to get, everyone is on their side all of a sudden. Everyones all for privacy. I tell you whats going to happen, youre going were going to turn into europe. You know, lets god help us. There are none because you have the same kind of socialistic overreach there that these attorneys general are trying to have here. Okay. First of all, thats all im a little concerned myself about how the regulation acts is going to hit these companies because it is going to hit these companies. Its already fairly hardhitting them abroad. At this point, they have reached monopoly status. Lets agree on that. The question is, how are they going to bungle this up, the government . There are things that need to be looked. I still think they dont need to be broken up. How much stuff are we going to let them buy and dominate . Apple was talking about buying another driverless car setup. They are already in the middle of everything we do. The internet started with the belief they were going to disintermediate the middleman. They have introduced themselves into the middle of almost everything thats going on. How much are they going to allow to shake down businesses to run ads on these services they control . How much are we going to pay . These are legitimate questions, and unfortunately i dont think the government is up to a complex job of a simple solution to stop the power being consolidated into so few hands. David jackie . I agree in the sense jonas said it is going to have a huge impact on these companies, but i dont think the government isnt necessarily up to the job to conducting the inquiries. I think the ftc should handle it, should stay under one umbrella rather than going to a local state level because thats going to complicate matters. Remember, these are industries and businesses that have been developed, you know, recently, so of course theres no regulation because nobody expected them to ever exist. Relatively. Yeah, relatively recent. But, you know i have to jump in here. Jonas, i completely agree. These are monopolies. Oh, yeah, like i couldnt live without facebook for crying out loud. A monopoly like aol had . Are you kidding . The techland scape changes in a nanosecond. At one time net scape was a monopoly. Thats just not true that theyre control things. Thats ludicrous. Let me lend my expertise. Dp compared all the other things we talked about, i have some expertise on this subject. You are right, these companies have a lot of competition, and so it is tough to call them a monopoly, especially with the definition that the government has been using for as long as we have been alive, which is do they raise prices on consumers . If you change the definition to be do they exercise undue influence on competitors, are they anticompetitive . Then theres a better argument for a monopolistic or antitrust behavior. That very well may happen. What big company is not anticompetitive . What . Do you think ford invited other Car Manufacturers into the fray . Right. Its not anticompetitive in your heart, but anticompetitive in your actions. David you know, what harm does it do the quconsumer . That used to be one of the definitions of antitrust. I dont see any harm to consumers. If you dont like facebook, you can always get out. The fact is go to instagram. They bought that. David, first of all, they have been very smart in two things. First of all they are acquiring the competition now. Youtube was a company that could have competed with google until they got acquired. Instagram could have competed with facebook until they got acquired by facebook. Theres a little too much acquisitions to maintain a monopoly and not let competition wipe you out, like net scape although that was an era where very few people were online. A lot of their monopoly power is directed towards companies. The consumer has been beneficiary, and that kept the government out. If you are in the content business, google has ruined your business nine times out of ten. Do you ever think how weird it is when you type in a company or a product, the company has to pay to be at the top of the search to google . Why . If they did to consumers, they would be flipping out but they havent yet. David we have to move on. We have to move on, gary, but i got to say, gary, i do agree with you that this is an easy thing for all those attorneys general around the country. Its become a political thing as well as Everything Else that were mentioning. Thank you, gang. Fastfood chains jumping on the meatless burger bandwagon. But is it all just a fad . Well debate that, coming next. My old friend announcer more details incoming involving volkswagen and the growing scandal. Dissatisfied customers filing complaints against the german auto maker. David fastfood restaurants rushing to add meatless burgers to their menus, hoping these higher priced alternatives will help boost traffic and revenue. Now, shares of beyond meat, thats a company that specializes in plantbased burgers surging almost 40 today. This after forecasting sales will more than double overall this year, after tripling just in the last quarter. So will beyond meat and all of its competitors actually see sustained growth, or do we think this is all just a fad . I wouldnt say it is a fad. I keep thinking skate boards are a fad, but they are not going away. [laughter] i think the trend of eating vegetarian is going to grow. I think it is going to grow faster than regular meat consumption. But that doesnt mean these companies are going to make so much money to rationalize these prices. At the end of the day, this is a little commodityish, and i think people will start realizing this isnt really that healthy. I mean, yeah, it is healthier than maybe a meat burger but probably not healthier than just a steak. It still has the cheese and the burger bun and coconut oils and salt and all this stuff. These are not healthy substitutes for a meat diet. Again, i think it is a nice thing they are making a better tasting vegetarian burgers. I think it tastes better. As far as can they get a high profit margin longterm like starbucks did, i dont know about that at this point. For investors it is a bright shiny object, right, and probably for a bunch of consumers it is a bright shiny object as well. I think it is faddish. Does it have a place in the market . For sure. But probably not all the excitement its generating right now. I would be kind of in the middle. I would say first of all to jonass point, health wise, this is a great marketing ploy. They have about five times the sodium of a regular burger. They have as much saturated fat as a regular burger. Do you know what these are .
