What happens if the entire tax reform push falls apart in the senate . There are already as many as six republicans expressing doubts or trepidation about voting on the bill the way it is. A sitting prr piece of President Trumps ageneral today once again will fail when it gets to the upper chambers. Charles there are certainly different sort of pushback in the senate. Some think Small Businesses arent getting a big enough break. And others who dont seem to be on board with the trump agenda. It was the chief Justice John Roberts who said that the individual mandate was a tax. So it makes sense why its being put in tax reform. Even rand paul with his banged up ribs is coming to d. C. They werent able to get healthcare passed through the senate. But even though there seem to be some on the fence with this, i think some can be convinced. So im hopeful that something can happen because republicans know one thing. They need a legislative victory. Charles according to the tax commission, the jtc, your average tax rate for the categories that start at 20,000 and ends up at 75,000 all go higher than they currently are. You couple that with other problems people have like Small Businesses not getting rates as low as big corporations, and its still murky. You bring up a great point which is there are some savings here that can be found. I do think moving forward, you do have to senators on the fence. There is no doubt about that. You see the questions about healthcare. The main question seems to be from senator murkowski. If we dont have a healthcare structure in place, if the premiums are going to be higher, what is the benefit if we are lowering taxes. This is where things are still murky. So because healthcare didnt go through and we are trying to do tax reform there is a lot of murkiness when it comes down to it. I think well see senators fall in line and get on board. This isnt the trump agenda. This is the republican agenda we are looking to accomplish. When republicans are trying to push things forward and go back to their home states, they will need to have something to show for themselves. A few of these potential nos, this is their last rodeo. They are not worried about being reelected. And some if they were, maybe they would push back on their personal principles. As a tea party person, how do you see the bill . Does it deliver . Its hard to say. The most of important words i heard previous to nine were unclear, murky and republican. The first thing i want to ask is what is republican about this . Since when is not cutting spending republican . We have tax decreases followed by toxin creases. There is a mishmash. And the grassroots are confused. There is nothing clear coming out of congress right now. Charles you agree lower taxes in general will help the general public. We would love to see lower taxes. They are lower, then they become higher. This is a recipe for a future disaster, a future war. This idea that its going to go higher in the future is crazy and the grassroots dont understand it. President trump allowing some of the bush tax cuts to become permanent. I think they will sell this to main street. Have faith, well deliver down the line and these tax cuts you are receiving will be permanent. Its sub optimal to have part of the tax cuts be temporary. But if they are going to produce the growth the white house says, the next step would be to make them permanent because they would see the wage growth and employment expansion the white house is promising with these tax cuts. The white house has to be banging on their assessments on these thanks cuts are accurate. It would be logical the thanks cuts would pass. But republicans wont always have the majority. If they are temporary, democrats can undo them down the line. Charles i like the word suboptimal. Is that going to be enough . I think i am like everyone else. Im not sure why or how the republicans have gotten into this particular predicament. I hate to say it, but i blame it establishment for not playing ball with the chief executive. American public voted for an agenda in november. Its shocking that its difficult to get it through, ashley. The American Public voted for this. What we heard from mark is the grassroots are confused and unhappy with whats coming out of this. Now is trump part of the establishment . You have a reason for liberals to get involved, the fact that we have feminist undertones to this entire backing with sexual debacle with Sexual Harassment. Theres no reason everyone shouldnt be compelled to care about this scandal screaming through Congress Sweeping through congress right now. I think we will see people start to come forward. Were already seeing that because people feel more comfortable coming forward in this day and age, in the postharvey weinstein era, and the people who have been affected feel compelled and empowered to come forward. So if we fast forward to 2018 and theres a senator roy moore and a senator al franken, then what does that say about all of this. Yeah, i would say what you often find with these allegations is depending on what party you are in, youre willing or not willing to speak out against it which i think is completely wrong. But senator franken is already on his fourth apology for the photo that was circulateed, and i think we have to ask two questions. First of all, should an elected official even if they apologize still stay in office. And second will of all, does he really mean it . If you remember back to when he ran for the senate, he actually had to issue an apology to lesley stahl for making a jock about raping her a joke about raping her and later said in a book that he didnt mean the apology. So we need to put pressure on these senators. They are Public Servants or supposed to be, and if youre not serving the public well, i think you need to step down. C. , and why should Mitch Mcconnell have any sort of, be able to control that particularly when there is the presumption of innocence until guilt despite the fact that numerous women have come out with some very detailed allegations . And youre absolutely right, let the Voters Decide instead of these external forces such as Mitch Mcconnell throwing 30 million in the primary to try and defeat judge roy moore. But i think the interesting thing we need to look at as an American Society is once upon a time we had a sitting president that was involved in a sexual scandal and he did lie about it. We were told character, morality didnt matter. As a matter of fact, there was someone who said its the economy, stupid. So as long as the American People were prosperous and doing well, character didnt matter. I think weve come back full circle. Because of the way diabetes can affect the body, were talking about billions of dollars in potential costs not only medications to treat diabetes, right . But hospital costs for hospital stays for those who have diabetes. Charles right. But the other thing is lost productivity, people not able to go to work. So its a huge problem. Charles we keep hearing its a huge problem, but it gets worse. To me, it seems almost like the price of success, the price of prosperity and the price of innovation. I keep reading how india, china and other countries that are enjoying greater prosperity are seeing a huge spike in diabetes. Does that mean its unavoidable . Its avoidable, charles, and heres why the price of prosperity is exactly the right point. Two out of three americans are overweight, and almost half are obese. When youre charles im just bigboned, by the way [laughter] s this is not about you, and i know you exercise regularly. The issue is you only make a certain amount of insulin, and you need that to drive the sugar out of the body and into the cells. If you dont have that, your sugar goes up in your bloodstream, you get diabetes. Now, it does run in families, some people cant avoid it even if theyre skinny. But for most of us its about not exercising, eating all the wrong foods. Well, type ii is 30 to 1 more common than type i. And also in addition to not making insulin properly, its also about not using it properly. Absolutely. Family history is huge. Over 45, etc. Charles all right. I try to be a solutionsoriented show. What are we looking at . Theyve spent threequarters of a billion dollars on this, and there are a lot of Major Companies out this. System of them ive invested in. Some of them ive invested in. All i see is more innovative ways to get us insulin, you know, through the cheek, through the tongue, whatever. But an actual way to approach this in a way where we dont even need to do that. I would say, and id love to hear your thoughts as well, we talked about risk factors and obesity. In the last 20 years the rates of diabetes have tripled, and its probably in part due to this obesity epidemic were having. I want people to feel hopeful. With type ii diabetes, you can prevent it or delay it by having a healthy lifestyle. Or reverse it. Thats exactly right, yes. And i also want people to be aware of the warning signs. If you have blurry vision, if you get tingling in your fingers and toes, thats a sign your nerves are affected. If you start to urinate frequently or if your weights going up, see your physician. You might be on the eventual of diabetes, and we might still be able to reverse it. Theres things we can do. Exercise, eating healthy, losing weight, not smoking. These are huge. You can affect the course of your life that way. Charles is this like a lot of ailments, particularly the ones we bring on ourselves . As medicine improves and it helps us to maintain, does that actually even deter us from doing what it takes to actually help ourselves . Sure, because we have great pills now. And they are great pills. We have a drug thats amazing at making your insulin work better in your body and preventing your liver from releasing sugar. Weve got all great pills, but you know what . Just not being sedentary. 40 of americans are on the couch all the time. If they exercised, they would mobilize their sugar better, they would lose weight, theyd be much less likely to get diabetes. We have to be lean and mean like grow. I love that, lean and mean. Somebody tweeted me right before coming on, and they said, you know what . Please tell everyone its not just everyones fault. Family history plays a role. True. I have patients that are as healthy as can be charles but the fact of the matter is a large portion is brought on by our bad behavior. A vast majority of it.
