We learned a member of Congress Florida representative fredrico wilson less in in on a phone call President Trump made to the widow of the fallen hero, sargent ladavid johnson. Here is john kelly in his own words. Most americans dont know what happens when we lose one of our soldiers, sailors and marine s, coastguardsmen in combat so let me tell you what happens. Their buddies wrap them up in whatever passes of the shrowd, puts them on a helicopter as a routine and sends them home. Their first stop along the way is when theyre packed in ice, typically at the airhead and then flown to europe where theyre then packed in ice again and flown to Dover Air Force base, where dover takes care of the remains embalms them, meticulously dresses them in their uniform with the medals theyve earned, the emblems of their service, and puts them on another airplane linked up with a casualty officer, escort that takes them home. A very very good movie to watch if you havent ever seen it is taking chance where this is done in a movie hbo setting, Chance Phelps was killed under my command right next to me and its worth seeing that if youve never seen it so thats the process. While thats happening, a casualty officer typically goes to the home very early in the morning and waits for the first lights to come on and then he knocks on the door, typically mom and dad will answer, wife, and if there is a wife this is happening in two different places in the parents are divorced three different places, and the casualty officer proceeds to break the heart of a Family Member and stays with that family until, well for a long long time, even after the in tournament so thats what happens. Who are these young men and women . Theyre the best 1 this country produces. Most of you as americans dont know them. Many of you dont know anyone who knows anyone of them but they are the very best this country produces and they volunteer to protect our country when theres nothing in our country any more that seems to suggest that service to the nation is not only appropriate but required. So thats all right who writes letters to the families . Typically the company commander, battalion commander, division commander, secretary of defense, typically the service chief of the marine corps and the president , typically writes a letter. Typically the only phone calls the family receives are the most important phone calls they could imagine and that is from their buddies. In my case, i was after my son was killed his friends were calling us from afghanistan telling us what a great guy he was. That was the only phone calls that really matter and yeah, the letters count to a degree but theres not much that really could take the edge off for the Family Members going through, so some president s have elected to call, all president s i believe have elected to send letters. If you elect to call a family like this it is about the most difficult thing you could imagine. Theres no perfect way to make that phone call. When i took this job and talked to President Trump about how to do it, my first recommendation was he not do it because its not the phone call that parents, Family Members are looking forward to. Its nice to do in my opinion in any event. He asked me about previous president s and i said i can tell you that president obama who was my commanderinchief when i was on active duty did not call my family. That was not a criticism. It was just to simply say i dont believe president obama called. Thats not a negative thing. I dont believe president bush called in all cases. I dont believe any president particularly when the casualty rates are very very high, that president s call. I believe they all do so when i gave that explanation to our president three days ago, he elected to make phone calls in the case of the four young men who we lost in niger at the earlier part of this month, but then he said how do you make these calls . If youre not in the family, if youve never worn the uniform, if youve never been in combat, you cant even imagine how to make that call, but i think he very bravely does make those calls. The call in question that he made yesterday or day before yesterday now were to four Family Members, the four fallen, and remember, theres a next of kin designated by the individual if hes married thats typically the spouse. If hes not married its typically the parents unless the parents are divorced he selects one of them and if he didnt get along with his parents he will select a sibling but the point is the phone call is made to the next of kin only if the next of kin agrees to take the phone call. Sometimes they dont. So a precall is made, the president of the United States or commander of the marine corps or someone would like to call, will you accept the call, and typically they all accept the call. So he called four people the other day and expressed his condolences in the best way that he could and he said to me what do i say . I said to him sir, theres nothing you can do to lighten the burden on these families. But let me tell you what i tell them. Let me tell you what my best friend told me because he was my casualty officer. He said he was doing exactly what he wanted to do when he was killed. He knew what he was getting into by joining that 1 . He knew what the possibilities were because were at war and when he died in the four cases were talking about niger, in my sons case afghanistan, when he died he was surrounded by the best men on this earth, his friends. Thats what the president tried to say to four families the other day. I was stunned when i came to work yesterday morning and broken hearted at what i saw congress doing. A member of congress who listen ed in on a phone call from the president of the United States to a young wife and in his way tried to express that opinion that hes a brave man, a fallen hero. He knew what he was getting himself into because he enlisted he was where he wanted to be exactly where he wanted to be with exactly the people he wanted to be with when his life was taken. That was the message. That was the message that was transmitted. It stuns me that a member of congress listened in on that conversation. Absolutely stuns me and i thought at least that was sacred you know when i was a kid growing up a lot of things were sacred in our country. Women were sacred and looked upon with great honor. Thats obviously not the case any more as we see from recent cases. Life, the dignity of life was sacred, thats gone. Religion, that seems to be gone as well. Gold star families i think that left in the convention over the summer, but i just thought the selfless devotion that brings a man or woman to die on the battlefield i just thought that might be sacred and when i listened to this woman and what she was saying and what she was doing on tv, the only thing i could do to collect my thoughts was to go and walk among the finest men and women on this earth and you could always find them because they are all International Cemetery so i went over there for an hour and a half, walked among the stones some of whom i put there because they were doing what i told them to do when they were killed. Ill end with this. In october, or april rather of 2015, i was still on active duty and i went to the dedication of the new Fbi Field Office in miami and it was dedicated to two men who were killed in a firefight in miami against traffickers in 1986, the governor duke and grogan almost retired 53 years old duke less than a year on the job. Anyway they got in a gun fight and were killed. Three other fbi agents were there wounded, now retired so we go down, jim comey did an absolutely brilliant memorial speech to those fallen men and to all of the men and women of the fbi. You serve our country so well and Law Enforcement so well. There were Family Members there. Some of the children that were there were only three or four years old when their dads were killed on that street in miamidade. Three of the men that survived the fight were there and gave a rendition of how brave those men with were and how they gave their lives, and a congresswoman stood up and in long tradition of empty barrels making the most noise stood up there in all of that and talked about how she was instrumental in getting the funding for that building and how she took care of her constituents because she got the money and she just called up president obama and on that phone call he gave the money the 20 million to build a building and she sat down and we were stunned. Stunned that she had done it. Even for someone that is that empty a barrel, we were stunned, but you know none of us went to the press and criticized. None of us stood up and were appalled. We just said okay, fine. So i still hope as you write your stories and i appeal to america that lets not let this maybe last thing thats held sacred in our society, a young man, young woman going out and giving his or her life for our country. Lets try to somehow keep that sacred but it eroded a great deal yesterday by the selfish behavior of a member of congress charles thats john kelly in his own words. Next three men who served with our armed forces join us to share their thoughts, well be right back. Think your Large Cap Equity Fund has exposure to Energy Infrastructure mlps . Think again. Gov charles we just watched white house chief of staff john kelly provide a rare look at what happens behind the scenes when an American Service member is killed in action. Kelly said when his son marine Second Lieutenant robert kelly was killed in action, he got a call from his sons buddies and that was the only call that mattered. Kelly also railed against the political station of the president who calls or doesnt call a soldiers family to offer condolences. With us now a former intelligence advisor who also served under general h. R. Mc master, a former army ranger and current democratic strategist along with dan coldwell a former marine corps infant are man who is now Vice President of concerned veterans for america. Dan ill start with you. Very moving today and very educational as well and i also thought that it was really critical the part about the political station of this one area and america that to general kellys point where everything seems that theres no boundaries , even this. Yes, i have to say that the way this debate has gone has been disappointing but i felt that general kellys remarks were absolutely outstanding and hopefully it does educate a lot of americans on the whole process that goes into informing these families but ive got to say were focusing a lot on how these families were informed. We need to ensure they are taken care of in the future, that their kids have scholarships that the communities and the government is taking care of these families and ensuring they dont fall through the cracks. Theyre getting the benefits they earn and the support they deserve from the community. Charles michael theres no doubt about that. I want to talk again because we do still have a lot of issues in Veterans Affairs but i want to dig deeper into this situation because it became politicized and maybe theres fumbling around and could this be a call to all of americans, you know lets step back for a moment and remember what keeps us free because freedom isnt free after all. Michael im honored to be part of that 1 along with my fellow panelists and what general kelly said today educated americans, educated the press and shamed politicians that are seek to politicize the sacred conversations that take place. I left afghanistan in 2002 to go home on leave and we were excited to go home and see our families and then a somber moment hit us when a fallen comrad was riding back with us so there was about six of us in the back of a c130 going to germany and a u. S. Flag draped casket joined us. No one read a book, nobody watched a movie, nobody put headphones on and we just sat there with our fallen comrad whose going to go to germany to go threw the process general kelly described and it was humbling and makes you legalize whats important. Charles part of this obviously the reason were discussing it tonight is because it has been politicized and the central figure at this is representative fredrica wilson. She did have comments after general kelly spoke and i want to share them with you guys in the audience. Let me tell you what, my mother told me. When i was little, she ed that dog can bark at the moon all night long but it doesnt become an issue until the moon barks back. Charles okay robin im not sure exactly what she means there but obviously taking this further when i think everybody in this country would hope that we learned a lesson and it maybe goes away. I would have thought so especially like general kelly said after the convention when a gold star family was in a way dispair aged i understand the representatives sentiment but i think shes taking it too far. Charles okay well try to get robin back. Do we have any of the panelists guys . Yeah, i can hear you. Charles i want to go back to you, dan because you brought a veterans and how we treat them this has been a serious issue and while there have been some improvements, a major story developing that we need to discuss the department of veteran affairs, the va now investigating last year 2016 death of a 68 year old vietnam veteran at bedford , massachusetts, their va hospital there, bill nutter suffered a condition where his heart could stop beating and there was a nurse who was supposed to check on him hourly. So that aid admitted she was actually playing a video game and had not checked on him that night. Now, we got a response from them later on today and the Inspector General says well theres been an investigation on this thing but it began in july of last year. We are supposed to support the troops while in combat but also take care of them as they age. This is disgraceful. It is absolutely disgraceful and it is still sad that were hearing these stories far too often but here is the good news. It is now much easier to get rid of employees like this because of a bill that President Trump signed into law the va the ability and whistleblower protection act. I was honored to stand behind him as he signed it and the secretary has said the va secretary said theyre going to fire this individual and its going to happen a lot quicker than it did in the past so thats good news but there is still a lot of work to do. Weve dealt with the accountability personnel side and now we need to work on the healthcare side in particularly given veterans choice to take care benefits in the private sector so they arent stuck in facilities where theyre mistreated and arent receiving the highest quality of care possible. Charles michael back to you on this whole thing from the way this is being politicized and obviously representative listen ing in on the phone conversation, its bizarre at the minimum offensive, you know, for a lot of other people and yet i dont think its going to die down. It should. Ive looked at some of the comments since general kelly gave his speech and i was surprised at a lot of the negative comments saying he threw the marine corps under the bus and should resign based on his comments. This is a general once again sacrificing for his country, talking about an emotional moment with his own son, trying to educate the americans and the press in congress that listen, youve got to take this stuff seriously. We have an all volunteer force that after 9 11 when they join the marine corps, army, navy, air force they know they may be going into harms way and theyre still volunteering so its a very educational moment and sobering moment. Charles the moral of the story to paraphrase general kelly is this fallen hero and all of them exactly where he wanted to be with the people he wanted to be with and we salute the service. You too guys as well appreciate it thanks a lot. Thank you. Charles and robin as well by the way who unfortunately we lost his satellite so the senate expected to vote shortly on a budget that should pave the way for tax cuts. Its so critical yet we are gnawing on our nails. It happens tonight but will it happen well discuss it right here on fox business. Its easy to think that all Money Managers are pretty much the same. Charles thats a live look at the senate floor where we are awaiting a vote on the 2018 budget plan that would set the stage for pushing through tax legislation President Trump telling reporters with the governor of puerto rico that we have the votes. President trump i think we have the votes for the budget which is phase i of our massive tax cuts and reform but i think well be successful tonight with respect to the budget. I think you probably know you can count the votes, maybe better than most people but i think we have the votes and frankly, i think we have the votes for the tax cuts which will follow. Charles now the president also said he expects this vote to go late into the night. The panel to discuss now Fox News Contributor rich lowry, the National View editor tammy bruce who also serves on an independent womens voice board of directors and emily Washington Examiner commentary. Emily ill start with you. President trump sort of joking around listen weve got the votes maybe i guess obviously this is it. Tonight is so critical. This is the moment that the republicans need to step up Republican Leadership better deliver. Vote to basically clear a procedural hurdle that will allow them to pass the tax reform eventually they have the votes. It would be extremely surprising if this vote does not pass. As it looks right now it should be fine. It would be a massive surprise if it doesnt pass. Charles we set the stage guys, it passes, and then we get to the big one, tax reform or tax cuts or whatever you want to call it. Does this give it momentum . Does this put a wind in the sales or more pressure tammy on those folks who were nos before i think everybody at this stage probably knows what they are going to do and getting a budget passed isnt that a love ly idea . Youve got republicans who suddenly might have an actual budget so that should be an easy thing. If they couldnt get a budget done thats ridiculous but now the question is charles what happens when it comes to the tax cuts . What does that picture look like the death tax, the nature of the choices made, and what maneuvers are going to be made by the democrats in that regard but this passage makes filibuster if it does pass tonight we expect it not possible but they will still be some attempts to gum up the work so republicans have to get through as much if not all of what the president s asked for. Charles but those attempts to gum up the works are these intentional attempts or some of these folks so wedded to ideology theyre incapable of finding any compromise . Well the problem is charles you need 50 to pass under reconciliations doesnt sound like that high a hurdle its not 60 but you only have 52 republicans you wont get democrats realistically, so then you can only have three nos and unfortunately just like with healthcare theyre a lot different ways to count to three you get collins, i dont know whether anyone is a firm no right now, but problem senators are the usual suspects. Collins, mccain, rand paul, mike lee, and even marco rubio has expressed some concerns about this will. I would help they would all realize it would be catastrophe if they dont pass something. Charles and of course the irony is they balance each other out, right because youve got three who oppose it for almost the reasons the other three oppose it and again, someones got to step in and say to someone that youve got to make a decision beyond this ideology. Theres supposed to be an entire infrastructure in the senate to maneuver these individuals. Weve not seen that again unless senator mcconnell has liked the procedure so far which would be unfortunate. But i do like that the president has ruled this out properly a great pr Campaign Meeting with senator mcconnell is helpful. Charles emily thats a critical point, but President Trump, he is really invested in this big time. Hes traveled to different states, appealed to the American Public and i believe ultimately hes the one who has to drag this across the finish line because i believe the gop just given up to themselves are incapable of doing it. The white house has really been firing on all cylinders to sell this legislation. Of course right now we have a frame work but on top of that what we saw with the healthcare legislation was massive failure in part because leadership does not fold in members into the early framework negotiations, right . Like they didnt know what was going to come out necessarily and that made debate a lot tougher within the party. Now that has not been the case and theyre already light years ahead because theyve been working together cooperating from the outside so that gives an advantage right away but with that healthcare failure is why this is so crucial for the base around the country. Charles a controversial Democrat Bill would regulate advertisements on the internet and got a stamp of approval from a republican senator. You can figure out who it was well debate it though when we come back. Six in the morning. She thought it was a fire. It was worse. A sinkhole opened up under our museum. Eight priceless corvettes had plunged into it. Chubb was there within hours. They helped make sure it was safe. We had everyone we needed to get our museum back up and running, and we opened the next day. Help protect yourself against pneumococcal pneumonia. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about prevnar 13®. Charles im going to do my best alex trebek. Yes the answer republican senator john mccain signing on to adeem bill that requires digital platform to publicly disclose advertisements purchased during the election season and this in an effort to fight fake news but critics say this will would be too much government regulation on the internet but lets ask the experts. Tammy is back with us along with danielle liberal comentator and associate and vince editorial director of the daily collar. Vince ill start with you. Is this a movement in the right direction . Obviously we may the itly need some sort of bipartisan way to fight back against fake news is this it . This is a solution in search of a problem. Lets think about how we got here. 100,000 in advertising supposedly bought by russians on facebook. The lions share of it doesnt even appear until after the election. By the way that advertising not political advertising at all. Its that social issues about gay rights, about immigration, all sorts of things that didnt have anything to do with candidates and now theyre talking about election advertising . This is again a solution that if you come up with a solution identify what the issue is. Charles vince is being polite lets face it another excuse right for why the democrats lost instead of just saying its a lousy campaign with a lousy candidate and they made mistakes, theyre still trying to rewrite the victory in the history books its ridiculous should we be moving forward . I dont see any reason why there shouldnt be bipartisan support for this will. Print ads and tv ads are regulated why shouldnt social media ads be regulated . Over twothirds of americans get their from social media so why shouldnt we have the same rules for new media than for traditional media. Charles the narrative is the hundred thousand dollars in russian ads to vince tosses point much is spent after the election somehow tilted the american electoral process. The founders must be sitting up in their graves like how come we couldnt figure that out . This is really not about the election at all. This is actually an effort and people believe this is the beginning of a new effort to completely regulate the internet like utility. Remember that came up as an issue in fcc commissioner was saying well weve got to make you have to register and get a license if youre making political commentary because the system and the establishment and liberals should be learned about this as well. They dont want this town hall to exist. The moment you put regulations on there and one part of this will is that anyone who spends 500 youre going to have to release their information, who is it, what they wanted, who theyre targeting. For television huge difference is the cost. Youre looking at larger actors making a difference on television. The internet allows regular people to engage. Sure but one thing i will say is this will suggests that only platforms have more than 50 Million Viewers or subscriber s so this is charles but thats platform but what about the individuals who make up the platform . The person who would buy an ad on facebook the regular person so this is why were concerned and i think when youre dealing with nobody trusts the government and what the system wants to do and this is one of the reasons. They dont like the fact that we can have these conversations and its already illegal for foreign governments to try to influence an election. This is false. By the way threatening the past legislation to regulate political speech on the internet is compelling these giant Companies Like google and facebook to seek out means to sensor people on their own platforms. Theyre going to approach this thing with a nuclear bomb and i think ultimately the threat of legislation is making the Media Companies responsible for the lions share of all communication worldwide, nervous about the types of speech happening. This is a bad moment we should be on guard. Charles i think we should be concerned about the first amend amendment the fcc saying there are limits what we will do even to stop news on major media the viewer has to make up his or her mind also. Sure ii think this legislation is about helping viewers understand whats real and fake. We shouldnt do that. Viewers are smart enough to figure it out. The government will make it worse. Charles what a way to celebrate the worst one day crash in the history of the stock market than to see stocks tumble out of the gate on a combination of global jitters from chinas economy to a potential civil war in spain to the reminder that stocks do go down and sometimes very hard and very fast and even as a post mortem on what caused the 87 crash continues three decades later right now there are very few parallels between then and now but on that note the dow actually finished up five points , rewriting the record books again, although the more impressive number was the fact that it climbed 110 points off the intraday low. The dow is now up 17 from 2017 and would have been much higher were for not the decline in apple again the normal jitters over the new phones how that rolls out it happens every time but make no mistake, there is increasing anxiety which explain s why the best performing sector were to utilities as money seems to be rotating quickly out of those tech names which explains why the nasdac was the only big index down for the session but the high flying index had 1664 decliners only 1200 advancers and 49 nasdac stocks and 52 week low so thats the highest number in a long time clearly people are starting to dump some of those names and in addition the market crushing Companies Still come up short this Earnings Period case in point United Airlines down more than 12 for the day and the flip side is the continued search for value looking at over sold stocks, one of the reasons sketchers popping tonight after they posted their earnings results. Charles a bidding war among hundreds of cities across this country and canada for the new Amazon Headquarters so it comes to a close at midnight, joining me now shelby holiday senior video reporter at the wall street journal this thing is a monster potentially 50,000 employees billions of dollars in economic activity. 5 billion over two decades. Charles everybody wants a piece of the action. Cities are going nuts one article today that i read said cities are thirsty. Theyre pulling out all of the stops trying to get the Second Headquarters and amazon is considering things like the culture of the city, its proximity to airports and highways of course they want it to be somewhere cool where people want to go work but it all comes down to the tax break. All comes down to the subsidies and those persons they get. Thats the genius behind amazon, wall street journal just today did a report about how amazon has basically taken advantage of a billion dollars in tax breaks over the past five years because they have a team internally that thats their job. They just work to get the best subsidies they can. Charles im reading where theres been an offer break as much as 7 billion to the company. Now we saw where you had this big deal in wisconsin right . And it almost didnt get through they had to vote on whether or not they give these large tax breaks. The economics of it, does it work out for these cities to give out these gigantic tax breaks to these companies to bring these potential jobs . Thats a good point because it is somewhat controversial. Some people in these towns say its not worth it why are you giving our taxpayer dollars away but other people want these jobs and it depends on the city and the state whether that states in good enough shape economically right now. You could argue the rest could use an amazon Second Headquarters. Charles i think detroit could use it. That would be an amazing one. Denver and charlotte are already doing pretty well but it is controversial and you do have to look at the pros and cons when youre offering these tax breaks whether youll get more in benefits. Charles also when it comes to amazon and a lot of these silicon giants, theyre pretty putting with the local communities right . So they built these headquarters at our campuses, you have to take a bus to them, they drive up real estate prices. To a degree, if youre just a regular person who happens to be in that same town people feel like you should see the complaints against these companies and other states. That has to go into the mix as well because theyre a little bit high fluting arent they . It does go into the mix and you bring up a great point look at Silicon Valley and the controversy about housing prices and what these fancy Tech Companies have done. What i think is so amazing about this whole situation is you see facebook and google and twitter all going to the hill. Theyre in political trouble at this point and were talking about the turn on Silicon Valley , but amazon is an outlier all of these people all of these governors and politicians are throwing money at them.
