[people screaming ] [shots being fired ] liz you heard that, three separate rounds of shootings last night, 58 dead, 515 wounded , it is the deadliest mass shooting in u. S. History. But the president calling it an act of pure evil. This as more details surface about the lone gunman and the brave acts of heroism last night lets get to the gunman a retired accountant shot a rapid fire barrage on a Country Music concert on the Las Vegas Strip sending thousands fleeing. The suspect kills himself a swat team found him dead. At least 19 rifles, hundreds of rounds of amunition, two try pod s and two scopes. The swat team used explosives to break into his hotel room, Law Enforcement remains baffled as to why he did it. We have the hallway contained , the room where the shots were fired from. It is contained right now, if you can avoid coming through those doors please do. Lets break down, 132 mandalay bay. Suspect down. Multiple firearms. We do have one suspect down and in custody per swat. Information on the potential name with the suspect is a platinum with the name of marilo u danley. Liz this is risk reward im elizabeth macdonald. It was the end of a three day Music Festival on the Las Vegas Strip. 22000 people at the concert across the streets at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and casino. Now during the final song a little after 10 p. M. Local time, a man began shooting down at the concert crowd from the 32nd floor of the hotel, about a quarter mile away. Shooting from two different windows to get different angles thats according to police. He fired shots for about 20 minutes, chaos 22000 people fleeing in every direction, trampling many including some of the injured. Police and swat teams arriving in force shutting down the strip which quickly became a Triage Center with bodies on make shift gurn its stretched along the sidewalk. People improvised to help the wounded, using wheel barrels and bug age carts. Las vegas sheriff earlier at a press conference saying this. Sheriff we are looking at excess of 50 individuals dead. The suspect ill provide you his identity at this point. His name is Stephen Paddock. Its going to be a long and tedious investigation. Liz again the gunmans identified as 64 year old Stephen Paddock of mesquite, nevada found dead in his hotel room. He had 19 rifles with him, hundreds of rounds of amunition, two scopes, two tripods. He had been in that room since last thursday. President trump delivering a somber and serious message earlier today and announcing he will travel to las vegas to meet the victims and First Responders on wednesday while press secretary Sarah Huckabee sanders got emotional. President trump may god give us the grace of healing and may god provide the grieving families with strength to carry on. What these people did for each other says far more about who we are as americans than the cowardly acts of the killer ever could. The gospel of john reminds us that there is no greater love than to lay down ones life for a friend. The memory of those who displayed the ultimate expression of love and unimaginable act of hate will never fade. Gun shots were ringing off the stage and cases no one knew where to go and country star chris young saidi spent i dont know how long on the floor of a trailer listening to that gunfire and to help victims people in las vegas started forming long lines beginning as early around 3 00 in the morning to donate blood. Reporter well police still do not know the motive behind this gruesome massacre but we are learning more about the killer, the shooter Stephen Paddock. We know that paddock worked at a company that eventually became Lockheed Martin for three years from 19851988. They are cooperating with authorities and answering any questions they may have about pa ddock. We also know he owned several rental properties and also had an expired pilots license. He was described by family members as a normal guy that kind of just hung out. The shooters brother eric describes him as a wealthy guy, someone that liked to play video poker, go on cruises, and also described him as a son that would often send his mother gifts and boxes of cookies. Eric says that the last he heard from his brother was when the shooter checked in with him after hurricane irma. He also says that paddock onetime sent him a text , a photo of ticket that he won 40,000 at a slot machine. They were also saying they were shocked to hear he would have guns at all because they said he had no military background. He didnt seem to have any extreme political or religious views and seemed to be mentally stable and they dont know why he did it. Listen to what his brother had to say. How do you, i mean, my brother did this. This is like it was done like he shot us. I mean if he would have killed my kids i couldnt be more dumb founded. Reporter we also know that the atf is tracing the weapons that paddock bought. Sources tell fox news he bought 30 guns during his lifetime which means he passed 30 background checks in order to be able to buy those weapons. Now some of these guns that he had with him were heavy long range guns that were meant to be used in big game hunting. Hunt elk,hoot brs. The bulle fired from the weapons are s powful they can penetre two people with one llet which elains why there was so many injuries. Hundreds and hundreds of people are in the hospital as we speak recovering from a lot of these gun shot wounds but we have heard from one gun shop owner who says paddock was a customer but insists they followed all regulations and listened to the statement that he released. Paddock was a customer and purchased firearm s from our store; however all necessary background checks and procedures were followed as required by local, state and federal law. He never gave any indication or reason to believe he was unstable or unfit at any time. We are currently cooperating with the Ongoing Investigation by local and federal Law Enforcement in any way we can. Now right behind me you can see the mandalay bay casino behind me. Thats where the strip is. Weve seen several people throughout the day walk towards us down this road leaving the strip in what they wore to the concert. Cowboy boots and hats. We talked to some of those victims who told us they didnt know it was time to run until they heard gun shots, saw people fall in front of them shot in the head and they knew they had to get out of there, liz . He had no political or religious affiliation, no military background, not an avid gunman, though the brother did say their father now deceased was a bank robber. The fbi adding Stephen Paddock had no connection to terrorists groups and his girlfriend out of the country and they have no connection to the shooting. Sheriff as far as his history background we havent completed that part of the investigation yet but we located numerous firearms within the room that he occupied and thats like i stated earlier its going to be a long and tedious investigation. Ted its baffling us as to why Stephen Paddock did it given what we know so far. And reports say he was a retired accountant who played 100 hand poker no affiliations what are your thoughts . Elizabeth, it is a question theres no doubt about it. You know, for fox ive covered dallas, ive covered the pulse nightclub, i covered virginia caltech ive covered most of these scenes where youve had lone wolf gunman out there shooting like this and there is always the question, what was the motive . And this guy, paddock is Law Enforcements Worst Nightmare because hes so far undertheradar, elizabeth, that even Law Enforcement had no knowledge that this man had any criminal intent whatsoever and he was so normal that he would go to a gun shop and they would permit him to buy many and numerous guns. Liz its a great point. I mean he reportedly had 19 rifles in his hotel room, ted. He also had two scopes, two tri pods. I guess its easy to break down these guns and say put them in a suit case to get by hotel workers. Is it also easy to rig a gun to be an automatic weapon which is illegal in the country, a fully automatic weapon is illegal right . Youre absolutely correct about that. I would have to believe that what Law Enforcement is now doing is backtracking. Theyre looking at every video he checked into that hotel last thursday, so theyre checking every video that they possibly can to see when and how he got these weapons in there. Theyre also talking to individuals in his community that knew him. Theyre looking at his cell phone primarily to see who he engaged in conversation with. He was alleged to have been living with a girlfriend so quite naturally, theyre questioning her to try to determine what was this mans motive. Why would a man go up on the 32nd floor of a hotel, plan over and over to just kill human beings . Massacre human beings. Liz he killed a registered nurse, a school teacher, a special ed teacher, Police Records technician. Ted the brother of the shooter is baffled as well. He says the family had no idea why he did it. Theyve theyre dumbstruck. Lets listen. He told his mother. Was there any indication at all that this was coming . Nothing. Were lost. I dont understand. It makes just no sense. Liz and reportedly their 90 year old mother is in shock as well over the shooting by her son. How could this, the question is how does the family not see anything . Apparently they were not in touch with him so how could this go on without Anyone Around him not noticing . Were not saying the family because they werent in touch with him, apparently talk to him twice a year. How could Anyone Around him not notice . Well you say thats just it. Apparently this man acted like any normal human being. Normal human beings dont carry these kinds of acts out. It is also believable that the family would the majority of the family lived in florida. He was there in vegas. If if was anybody who have known practice what he was up to it would be people perhaps closest to him within his neighborhood. He lived in this retired community but this was a guy again elizabeth, very very much undertheradar. Liz yeah. Nobody would have suspected this. Not from this guy. Liz its a great point and ted, witnesses improvised to help the wounded using luggage carts, such acts of heroism here one individual said they were using a freezer as a gurney. Lets listen, watch. When we walked up on this earlier i said it was used as a gurney, and i said do you know what that is its a freezer used as a gurney. And the tables that were inside were as well. They were using everything we can. We were using the rails between the partitions in between to carry bodies out with that as well. Well you know thats what we need to take our hats off to Law Enforcement and First Responders here it is bullets are raining down on individuals in a crowd. They themselves dont know where theyre coming from members of the crowd and youve got First Responders and Good American folk theyre trying to save the lives of their fellow citizens or it doesnt get any better than that when it comes to a tragic event of how we as americans can rise up and try to help each other and thats what we found there, those First Responders are brave heros as far as im concerned. I was in the middle of it i guess one of the guys to my left took a bullet in the leg and he dropped and i turned around and looked at him and i said oh, i guess this is really happening and when the first one went off and jason aldean took off the stage, thats when i was like is this actually happening . And so going through that youre like well, i guess this is happening and everybody ended up dropping to the ground and i turned around and for some reason, i wasnt, i didnt drop. I just started looking for injured. Liz so you started looking for injured because the advice collin has been with an elevated position of a shooter like that, you shouldnt drop and stay on the ground you should just try to run, so and what you saw after the shots rang out you saw people getting shot, right . You said somebody in the leg . Yeah, i saw one gentleman took one in the leg. He went down and then it was just all out chaos. People started running to the sides of the near buildings and then we kind of, well by we, i have a friend whose a nurse and we started trying to do triage. Liz so you are an example of one of the brave heros there who responded help. How do you compare this to iraq . You say this is worse than some of the fighting in iraq . Well, so i cant really speak on that. I can tell you that you would expect that kind of stuff in iraq. I could tell you that ive never seen anything like this before ever and to be up close and personal, you dont expect that in las vegas. You dont. I was born and raised here and you dont expect that kind of stuff in vegas. You expect it in iraq so thats kind of referring to that youd think that kind of stuff would happen in iraq and not here. Liz yeah i hear your point. I mean when youre in iraq, youre soldiers right and you have weapons. This is innocent people being shot by the hundreds, being wounded, 58 killed. I mean so your experience as a war veteran, how did that make you feel being in the middle of this last night . Well i got back the first week of last month from iraq, so it was good to be back and now it seems very like surreal right now, because as of right now you dont expect that to happen and there have been Mass Shootings and you dont expect it in your hometown or expect it at a country concert. You just dont, so its kind of surreal right now. Liz collin it sounds like youre in shock, are you . I dont know if i have an adrenaline rush or i dont know. Im just here. Liz have you been up all night . I had about 45 minutes to an hour nap. Liz and do you know anybody who was wounded or killed at this event . I did not. I turned around and i saw one of my old baseball coaches wives i gave her a hug before all of the stuff went down because i was like oh, there she is and i turned around and she was gone and i saw people from high school and i couldnt find them but it looks like everybody, i knew a lot of people and they were all safe. I did not know anybody but i did see people go down and we just went to work trying to help people. Reporter hi liz were learning more about the suspect in shooting in las vegas and a county official now tells the nevada independent newspaper that the suspect had two hotel rooms up there. See those two different rooms . But it may have been a suite with two bedrooms anyway it will all come together. Investigators say he used Something Like a hammer to smash out one window in each of the rooms and open fire on the concert grounds across the street. A retired Las Vegas Police officer tells the Washington Post newspaper that a fire alarm from the gun smoke sent Police Officers into the shooters room he says the swat team used the alarm to zero in on Stephen Paddocks position in about 20 minutes. Witnesses said the gunfire was rapid and relentless. [shots being fired ] [people running and screaming reporter witness accounts vary some say it lasted five minutes others say 15 minutes and one woman described the moments of panic after bullets began raining down from above while the Country Music star jason aldean was on stage. We saw jason run off stage and then people all over on the floor, the grassy area in front of the stage were just like some were falling and some were screaming and yelling and running and we were in this tower up on top and its like everyone said hit the floor so everyone was just like literally laying on top of each other trying to get out of the way and the shots just kept coming. Reporter i spoke earlier to another witness who said he and his fiancee were trapped in the vip tent when he saw the bullets hitting people. The shots started happening and we thought it was a technical malfunction because the music was still playing even jason aldean had no idea what was happening until about 10 rounds in and then big loud sound and luckily i managed to find them about five minutes after everything started, they were hiding behind the bar and i started running towards the main exit just turnaround and come back towards us. We didnt know it was safe so we jumped behind the bar and slowly made our way across the big field where you see bodies and people screaming and yelling for help and wheelchairs getting knocked over and you just couldnt stop to help anybody. The bullets were just were talking hundreds of rounds over and over and over again and rapid succession. It just would not stop. Liz governor, critics are saying it is not too early to talk about Gun Legislation. Theyre pointing to columbine, sandy hook and virginia. They say that its pastime others call this politics what do you say . Governor im just shocked, liz, that before we even have the final tally on the body count, we have politicians already trying to politicize this event. Its tragic and nobody right now needs to be talking about a piece of legislation none of which would have prevented this none of which would stop it. I thought the most maybe powerful message i heard today was earlier on fox when a new York City Police detective just said repeatedly its unpreventable. You cant stop every act of violence. The common denominator in acts like this is not the weapon. Its a person of intent, an evil person who is intent on killing people and whether he does it with automatic weapons, whether he does it with a bomb or running over people with a truck , the results are the same. Nevada time concertgoers fleeing in terror hiding behind barriers, food trucks and cars as bullets rained down from a nearby hotel. We now have breaking news from the Associated Press. Officials say at least 17 guns, we reported 19 guns according to the new york times, 17 guns at least found in the vegas shooter s hotel room. There were also devices to convert guns to automatic weapon s, to automatic fire. Lets bring in my next guest who was in the vip tent with his fiancee during the concert in las vegas at the time of the shooting. Joining us over the phone is russel bleck. Russel how are you doing now . Hi there, just kind of trying to get in and out of sleep and just realizing this is my life and trying to process everything to be honest with you. Liz its shocking. Its an outrage, absolutely horrific, a disgrace. Russel can you set the scene for us when did you realize what you were hearing were gun shots . So at first, it sounded like it was a helicopter landing sound or maybe like a fire crackers cracking or musical equipment cracking but then it was so repetitive that you knew that it was an automatic rifle without a doubt. Liz were showing video right now from inside the tent. You know, a tent doesnt provide cover from gun shots. No. Liz you must have been terrified. How did you escape . So we heard initially we knew they were kept rolling so its like what was that because we were all getting ready to leave anyway and i heard after the initial shots i heard like a sound where you could hear bullets entering the tent and from that point everyone just ran and realized this is reallife. The gunman was so far away. Were talking 300yards, it sounded like it didnt sound lick normal gun shots. It was so far away by the time you heard the sound the bullet was already there. Liz its a great point. And then you just ran and the problem we ran into was everywhere we ran we were boxed in with 10foot walls of fencing that they blocked us in so we had nowhere to escape so you had to double back where you came from and i saw a lot of people get hit that way. Liz so you saw people get hit, right . And earlier you described the scene as a battleground. Do you remember or you or your fiancee saying anything to each other after the shooting began . We got separated initially. I just remember saying that we got to get out of here we got to get out of here. We thought the gunman was on the ground following us.
