Stock exchange. It was a tough day, deirdre. The dow was down 128 points, the s p down 12, the nasdaq down 48 points. Longest losing streak basically all year in. And testing the moving day average closing at 12 im sorry 2067. So really watch that s p breaks before that selling here in the pickup in the future sessions. To the investor taking a cue from china, the shanghai index if he will 8. 5 overnight, china couldnt support a stock market, not without a Ripple Effect around the world. We saw oil prices come down because of that and the Energy Sectors were the weakest in the session today. A lot of household names with exposure to china. Apple share is down 1. 3 . Yum1. 3 . And each have Significant Properties there so we saw shares in those companies down as well. You look at some of the energy losers. Again, energy among some of the weakest sectors in energy. Down 3. 3 as a whole. Youve got a new low for phillips, that was 2. 7 decline. So this is where we are right now. Earnings will shift into focus here as the week goes on. Well hear from twitter tomorrow, facebook, and linkedin throughout the week. So that should hopefully bring some optimism back to investors. Back to you. Thank you so much. Joining us from the floor o of the New York Stock Exchange. Well, from red on your screens here in the u. S. To asia, chinese stocks crashed, the shanghai composite plunged more than 8 , gerri willis with me now. Gerri, this is the biggest selloff in more than eight years. What are people telling you was behind it . Well, tossed right. Its a crash. The biggest drop since 2007, and i have to tell you all eyes on china tonight. When it begins trading. What we do know is this. The government already saying that theyre going to get behind this and try to reign in thismatic. But ive got to tell you the government has already put in 483 billion trying to stop these selloffs. So far it hasnt worked. And as you know a lot of these investors are small investors. Mom and pops investing their own money and really getting hammered here. Now, u. S. Markets are paying attention because china is the number two trading partner with our country right behind canada and of course a lot of u. S. Companies do business with china. If chinese investors are hurt, so are American Companies like apple and other tech firms that rely on china for a lot of their sales. Well have all eyes on this market tonight as it opens. But i have to tell you. Not looking good for that market tonight. Yeah. Hours away, gerri, thank you so much and china selloff certainly affecting sentiment for all kinds of assets. In fact, energy stocks, you heard from lori, Oil Prices Fell hitting a 52week low. And fox contributor phil with me now. Phil, how much of the energy selloff is related to fears of an economic slow down and that gdp print is a lie . I think its the main reason were selling off . Because every other concern that we had about the oil market seemed to be turning down a little bit. We were worried about, you know, the greece situation, that seemed to level off. We were worried about demand numbers, but they were exceeding expectations. And its kind of weird if you look at commodities as an asset class, they out performed stocks. But now with china, this is a game changer. If this economy starts to fall apart, this is where the demand for commodities staple from the for the last decade or so. And if they start to have problems with then obviously the outlook for commodities as an asset class is in big trouble. Wow. That is a good point to make indeed. Phil joining us there from the cme. As you heard him say demand from china for commodities, a big reasoner why those prices have been propped up for so long. So investors are clearly worried that china is not growing as many thought. And author of the alternative answer bob rice with me now. So, bob, in reading today about china. One term that kept coming up is this idea of margin debt. We want to put 60 seconds on the clock, ask you to define it, and then well talk about it. All right. So margin data or large loan you may know at home is the amount of money you can borrow from your broker in order to buy more shares. So if you have 10,000 of stock, normally theyll loan you another 5,000, and you can have 15,000 of buying power. And thats how they sell it to you, and you have more exposure to the market. Well, the good news is you have more exposure to the market. The bad news is you have more losing power as well. And thats why were talking about it today. Because in china theres approximately 600 billion worth of margin debt outstanding. And as you just heard from gerri willis, a lot of that is there with mop and pop investors. So this big crash is falling indiscriminately on this middle class and really this is why youre seeing such a panicked racks from the chinese authorities. And with 11 seconds to go. But to bring that chart back. I mean that just shows you the tonnage of dollars financing there. Close to 250b as boy billion dollars. And so whats really interesting here if you look at our system, we have ways of controlling the amount of margin debt that goes out to any particular prism. Because we learned in the great depression, the great crash, this margin debt is kind of dangerous. In china they dont have these welldeveloped systems. So what youre seeing there, what that chart shows you is there are different ways, even down to peer to peer lending believe it or not to borrow to buy stocks. Now, these are not the institutional investors, these are the middle class. Chinese have been attempting to get the middle class to buy. The good news they were successful, the bad news now they have a huge problem. I just read a comment on twitter and the biggest problem with the Chinese Market is that its not a market. Right. Its a government run that thing kind of looks like a market. Acts like a market sometimes, you know . Prints numbers like a market, but its not really a functioning market. You cant go from a communist society to a welldeveloped set of Capital Markets boom like that and china really wants to do that. But wanting to do it and having decades of experience doing it are two different things. So, in other words, this is the Chinese Government as a communist government doing what it knows how to do but at the same time saying we should look a little bit more like the butts u. S. Has a thriving middle class. One way to do it, invest in stocks. Yes. What they really want to do. Their big goal is enrich into the middle class to the point that they can have a consumer driven economy instead of an export driven economy, which is the only economy theyve had. The problem with this crash as the really puts the screws to the middle class and hurts their ability to make that transition and makes a domino of course the in the rest of the world. If they are to drive exports, and that exports deflation around the world and creates even bigger problems than youre already seeing for us. Not good for turning on a dime. Bob rice, thank you for always join me there. And signing confidence is more important than gold. Since early july, the Chinese Government has tried an unprecedented frenzy of measures aimed at stemming the slide in stocks. So right now aas you saw from your screens, thats not working. Paul is with me now. So, paul, asian currencies just feeling the pressure of the strong u. S. Dollar. So what does this mean for the place of, hey, maybe this can be a reserve place. Right. And its really interesting to play off of what bob was saying. What theyre trying to do in china is a couple of things with the markets. On the one hand theyre trying to stimulate the market and trying to get real quickly so that they can get the attention of the imf and the gold markets and make it one of those reverse currencies. So youre seeing these two cross curtains really colliding here, and one of the things that started mondays selloff was there were reports that the imf said to the chinese you have to back off everything youre doing to prop up the stock market because that is not what a developed market does. Right. Because theyre forebidding institutions to sell. Right. If you try to do that here, thats craziness. So the message went to the traders there that the government was going to back off. You saw the selloff. Well, now its our time here, but the government has come out again and said no no no. In fact, were going to bay more. Ill be very interested to see how that goes over with international markets. With international investors. Because the people who can pull their money out, i read Something Like 6. 5 billion of Foreign Investment already left china in the past day alone. Are you really going to invest there if you think that your investment is completely predicated on the williams of the government and what they decide to the that way . No, of course not. People have been saying for years thats what you have to understand. Thats the other thing. Everyone kind of knows whats going on in china. And it becomes a topsy thing where youre not concerned about the fundamentals so much because you know theyre lousy. Youre worried about what the government is going to do to mask the fundamentals and if they do that effectively, and they can prove that theyre going to continue to do it, theyre going to be okay with investing over there. As long as theyve got to pay for everything over, you dont really care. Its when they start to pull back the supports, and you think, oh, my investment might actually be, you know, subject to whats really going on that you get a little worried. And, again, to get back to your original point, deirdre. If they want to have a reserve currency, a major marketplace, which is what the worlds second largest economy should have. Yeah. 17 trillion. They have to get their market to to go what it is right now, which is completely dominated by government intervention, to a free market. Thats not going to be a smooth ride. And glad to have your expertise like bitcoin and other areas, while focused in these areas,. I was looking at bitcoin price today. It didnt really move. Gold was up a little bit. Any time you see cracks in this sort of established markets, which china wants to you do see an opportunity for some of those alternative investments. Gold, bitcoin, you saw it more pronounced with the greece crisis with bitcoin. But i dont think that these are not yet. Yeah. Not yet. I dont know. But youll be back. Accident of. Thank you so much. Paul joining me there from the wall street journal. We have a quick break to take. And the country had said earlier it could open tomorrow after a onemonth shut down, may reopen monday as you really and winding through the political process as we speak. Well, keeping our eye on international matters. Turkey calling for a nato security. So one of the u. S. strongest allies in the region looks less stable. Fox News National security analyst Workers Compensation now. Katie, wonderful to have you with me. So theres a lot going on in turkey right now. Continuing to fight the curve based in northern and i can be fighting isis. Yeah. I think the middle east i have to understand everybody fights everybody else also time, and they change sides. I call this an ala cart civil war. Have made fighting isis and the kearns. The Syrian Rebels will fight isis and everybody has had different sides i, unfortunately, like your term thattalla cart of the war. Now, turkey has the right to say weve been attacked, weve been attacked by isis, weve seen suicide bombers, we want to get all the nato countries and lets decide what our role is. Under article 5 of the nato treaty, it says attack against one is an attack that has to be responded to. So youre saying that essentially turkey is looking for a declaration of war. Not yet. But were all talking about it now; right . Nato is getting together and having the meeting. But the next step is potentially turkey says okay. Come on everybody join and defend turkey. What does this mean longer term . The u. S. That region of the world is hard for the u. S. Friends are hard to come by; right . In that region. Yeah. And theres lots of different faxes, lots of different sides, but its okay. Thats one place on the map that the u. S. Has been able to count on. Yeah. The problem with turkey is the United States has had good and not on is good with turkey, separate from nato. Turkey, for example, has had good relations now doesnt have good relations with israel. I think the key to watching all of this k what happens with iran. We have the deal with iran, iran is supposed to be helping us fight isis. But if iran becomes the Nuclear Power in the region and the economically power in the region, that shifts the whole transport around. Turkey has the new position. Everybody is going to have to adjust to the new big guy on the block. So from what we understand there is a tenyear outline of this nuclear deal. At what point cow soon expert say okay in a way thats not supposed to say for weaponry or i see iran getting major billions of dollars from europe, including russia or other parts of the world. Well, theyre helping right away. Iran has to get two things out. Got this very complicated system of verification but all blue smoke in mirrors. But at the bottom lionel, this isnt an agreement thats verifiable. But even if it were, its not what we think, its what other countries in the region. If they look at this and say weight iran is about to get nukes. We need our nukes. So then and money. And we also need the money. And then what you see is a reality wealthy iran, potentially a nuclear iran expanding throughout the entire region and other countries in the region are saying we need to get nukes too. So at the dawn of the atomic age everyone is worried about the Nuclear Weapons and the hands. The chinese, the brits nobody has really thought they wanted to commit suicide and use Nuclear Weapons. But if you have Nuclear Weapons in the middle east and other countries besides iran getting them, we have seen in the arab spring, these countries can be toppled overnight. So what happens if another country gets a Nuclear Weapon . We know those guys will use Nuclear Weapons. As we have been led to believe and educated to believe, theres a certain faction whos mission it is to bring on as they see it the end of the world. Absolutely. We laugh at it. Facebook and Googles Youtube for your time and attention. And Senior Analyst is here russ is with me as well. Russ, who wins . Yeah. Its got to be youtube. Youtube has this trenched group of stars on their site. These people are not going to leave to go to facebook. Granted facebook can throw a lot of money at them, but then theyre going to lose a lot of the stars that have made them. Well, transitional media went right to three youtube stars, Something Like 72 hours later, so i see what you mean about an entrenched brand. But do you want to take the other side of that. Yeah. I have went to with with them. Were living in a visual world, nobody is reading anymore. Even facebook youre seeing a lot of the news feed because if facebook has signed these publishing partnerships, they just want to be your home screen, your mobile home screen, what if they put off something that sounds good in video. They probably will. The facebook users are decreasing quite a bit and people are moving on to other platforms because they are postable. And you have these makers creating phenomenal videos on youtube. And its about talent acquisition. I think its always been about talent but even more so. And what about the people that felt that they got the shortened of the stick. Because i know creators who are, like, i dont know maybe getting 50 on a good day. And now google and youtube saying we can give you a little bit more than that. No too little too late. Granted you can make up for the better deal with some money. But youre still losing its, like, starting from scratch with these subscribers. If you have 5 million subscribers on youtube, youre got an throw that away. Even if you get a ton of money. These people want to be seen, theyre stars, they want to be watched. Speaking of wanting to be seen. Instagram could eventually catch up to google and twitter in just two years and this is mobile display advertising. Thats a pretty good throw down. Are they going to do it or not. I dont see it. The reports are all over the place. But what ive been reading is about 63, 64 million users right now. I dont see it. They will get more money, just because theres so much interaction. Youve got the phone in your hand and youve got to tap it with your thumb versus youve got a display ad its much smaller. So they are making money there. But i dont think versus. Yeah, versus google or twitter, thats s s s s s rererv watermark, apparently instagram and teenagers i know they use snapchat more and instagram. But next year they can be using something else. Some people as many as 12 football teams when its up and running. Yeah. And youre refreshing that page every three seconds and constantly updating it. Theres a ton of money here and also people who come back year after year after year. They never leave. So once you adopt it, youre going to stick with that. Snooze why its such a good investment. Well, samsung is unveiling the first computer monitor that also charges your phone. Were continuing our tech conversation right now. So apparently decluttering your work area, no more cables, no more ports, but it is a samsung. Does it sell. I think its a Great Holiday presenter. Is it going to sell . I think its going to be a very, very cute gift. Is that going to go mainstream . No. But it will go mainstream is completely corresponded wireless. And because most devices rely on some form of charging station, whether its noticeable like a multipack or whether theres the special place mats for lack of a better term. What is your take. Yeah. Thats the issue right now. Like, i like samsung as a company, but you cant charge your iphone with it. Of course not. A lot of these very popular phones,. It hates yourine of. No. Yeah, thats the problem. Its very specific to a certain kind of technology. And if your phone doesnt support it, dont buy this monitor. Right. All right. Well, speaking of apple, reportedly teaming up about mw to build an electronic car. So which company should be more enlightened . Tesla or google . Google. I dont see us driving apple cars any time soon. I think apple should be focused on, you know, staying with the iphone and staying in the telecom space. I think apple powering cars is another conversation. I think thats whats going to be happening. You mean the operating system. Yeah. Exactly. Theres opportunity. But driving around in a apple car, i dont see it. Well, its a bmw, its going to look like a bmw, and this source is a german magazine crediting, sourcing somebody in bmw okay, yeah, theres been a lot of apple executives coming through here. Yeah. Its going to come down to essentially apple running the back end, the running the gps, running the screen in your car. Its not going to be a bmw with an apple logo on it. But theres a lot of money to be made with these cars, and apple does want a chunk of this selfdriving future. So who guess we know tesla is out there, google of course. Yeah. And then a lot of people are saying uber is working on it. Thats why uber went to pittsburgh and bought out the entire carnegie class. So which company do you think is going to be mainstream or is tesla already the answer. For the electronic car, yeah, theyre not mainstream yet, but i think google is going to be the mainstream solution, and i really think that he is going to be the future and a lot of them are going to be powered electronically. So they have google maps, theyre driving these cars around already, i think theyre ahead of the game. I think tesla has gone don a great job building their brand. And you i think theyve got i know they have new car releases including suv. Exactly. And people who love cars. My bets on tesla. Okay. Good to have it. Thank you so much. So Fiat Chrysler sign a Consent Order agreeing to pay this fine, which is the biggest ever, no other automaker has ever had to pay this much. Why such a big personality. Yeah. Automakers are taking it now, arent they . You know, you just have to get it off your inflate. Thats what this comes down to. They know they would be haunted by this in court for years. This is an ongoing. But its so much worse than honda or gm i mean the list is you say its a pretty long list, pretty big dollar sign, what did chrysler and fiat do to make so much worse. I feel that they were open to so many more fines. When you keep holding off on the recalls and youre saying theres no problems and there is, thats going to catch up to you. So who or what is the most problem. The biggest problem for them besides the money is that two of the vehicles are their two by anything vehicles. The ram picks up and the jeep grand cherokees. Theyre going to be paying market used value for the values and that could cost a lot of money, and these are the reaching out to the dealers, i mean theres numerous manpower hours on this as well. Absolutely. This is going to be going on for a while. You have to work with the dealers and get them the parts that you have to fix. And then give all these customers, convince them that maybe they shouldnt sell you the car back and let you fix it again. Or if they do, say, hey, look, i dont go for careers. But you were a little bit more measured in your response. Well, i think we all have the memory of the tainted bubble we were in before where if you had a pulse, you could get a mortgage and one of the primary items was Interest Rate or principle free mortgages. Which just seems crazy because i dont know. Very basic but if you cant afford it, guess what . You cant afford it. Right. And what were seeing is some of this crop up because since frank and the post financial crisis situation, theres very few mortgage products and not nerve america who has a mortgage has the same situation. This is a fair point. So what were seeing now is a responsible management of the process and this type of product is geared toward the wealthy. Its not for affordability, which is exactly what it was used for in the last boom. So that is definitely a point worth making. This is not for someone to extend him or herself. This is essentially transactional is what youre saying. Thats exactly right. Its really just a Financial Mechanism that fits someones personal situation at a moment in time. Thats all it is. Speaking of luxury, you know that market sole. What are you seeing . Were seeing were still seeing some modest price growth. But not the insanity we saw a couple of years ago. Yeah. A few years ago with this socalled billionaires row; right . Yes. Here in new york. People were selling essentially off the blueprint. Right. And then turning them around 18 months later for a profit. Yeah. The developers couldnt raise the price fast enough to meet the demand because it was so overwhelming. Now what you have is a lot more product on the market. And a lot of these buyers are investors, its not their primary residents. Theyre not really there to move in and make. Yeah. Their kids arent coming to school. Right. Have to do see everything going up, and theres no sense of urgency. And thats the characteristic of the market right now. Its definitely the most fun way to get around San Francisco, and its fast, and its cheap. All right, and i imagine they have to have some pretty good motors with all those uphills; right . Uphill both ways i feel like there sometimes. Sometimes. The electronic motor is great for that. All right. As far as how people use them, is this just, like, hey, i want to get to work . Is that the number one use . Thats our biggest use but a lot of people just try it because they want to try riding a motorbike. It doesnt require a motorcycle license, so folks will try it and get hooked and use it to going to the gym or Grocery Store or all could i see things. And how do you train people up . Is it different to shift gears . Because i know learning how to ride a motorcycle, it takes a little time. Well, these actually arent motorcycles. Theyre really mopeds, and theyre almost like riding a bike that instead of pedals, you twist the hand grip. So top speed 30 miles per hour, you can watch a video on our website or well give you an inperson lesson. And i know San Francisco a little bit, everybody goes to work around a certain time. How dodging that there are scooters around the city . Are you going up in trucks and just replacing them . You know, the scooters, the riders are moving them around themselves. So in the evening they all go out to the neighbors, and they park in the street and in the morning people open it up their phones, goat get it on their scooter, zip downtown. We dont truck them around at all. Okay. So what about the parking, whats complicated . I think the complicated thing is that weve got 400 electronic vehicles zipping all over the city, and we need to keep track of that. So we had to Keep Technology to track the scooters and turn them on and off with your phone. And make it super easy and that means you dont have to pay a driver, you just walk up to a scooter and turn it on with your phone. So the complicated part is the tech and were really just growing. And how long did it take you to build that, the back end so to speak . Well, weve been building it over the course of the last three years. So the basics were done in a year or so, and now were just trying to constantly improve it and making it better for people. And i know youve raised about 4. 5 million to date.
