New Braunfels police have issued a scam warning after two victims lost money in phony telephone solicitations.
David Ferguson, city communications coordinator, said one person was victimized in late November and another a few weeks ago â both lost money after believing a person claiming to represent a local area law enforcement agency.
âSpecifically, the caller claims the victim missed jury duty or is guilty of some other crime and that they will be detained or face arrest unless they pay their fines immediately,â he said.
âThe victim is then instructed to purchase hundreds (if not thousands of dollars) worth of gift cards or prepaid credit cards from a nearby store. The victim is then instructed to give the caller the information from the back of the cards as a form of âpaymentâ to avoid arrest or further legal action.â
