Facing slow hiring, Santa Cruz sandwich shop offers $10,000 incentive

A lot of businesses have been struggling to hire workers since some have started offering big incentives, including a central coast employer action. News reporter Phil Gomez is live in Santa Cruz with more on a business offering a $10,000 signing bonus film. Well that's right dan. That's just for one position right now. But anyway, I'm at restaurant Italiano in santa Cruz and they have job openings here and they haven't been able to fill them. So there are many reasons behind the staffing problems. One of them is because people are still concerned about contracting Covid. Another is because there are many people who remain on unemployment And so there are incentives being offered like those $10,000 for one position there to lure people back into the workforce. The help wanted signs are posted all over santa cruz county and in some cases businesses cut hours due to staffing shortages. It appears that every business is feeling the impact just in hiring. I feel like there hasn't been as many people applying for on indeed or any of our other hiring sites. So there has been a little bit hard. Jersey Mike's subs has 15-20 position needs to fill before it opens its doors this fall. It will be located at the former Burger M. on Mission Street. The key higher is the assistant manager. They're offering a $10,000 incentive for an assistant manager's position. 5000 for a shift leader and $500 for full and part time employees. Yeah, it's been, you know, it's been a challenge. It's a, it's a really difficult time for restaurants and, and, and service employees or service businesses all across the country. You know, in santa Cruz is no different. Um you know, it's been a struggle to attract people. Um, but we feel like doing this is the way that we can convey the fact that, you know, we're trying to build a culture here and they're not alone. The santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk offered incentives to potential employees as they ramped up to open I think, you know, knowing the high cost of living that people, you know, so now I can work that part time job and I can do okay and I'm a student. But if you're, you know, a family or a single mom or something that because of a harder challenge And those unemployment benefits aren't gonna last forever, I believe they run out this uh September or in the fall.
