Last summer the Black Lives Matter movement spurred national debate and internal reflection among businesses, governments, and other institutions. The same was true for academic departments in the University of Hawaiʻi system. This month an eye-catching newspaper appeared on campus and in cafes and bookshops around town — taking the UH Art Department to task for what it called a continued colonialist mindset. As HPR's Noe Tanigawa reports, some of the issues raised relate to conditions in the larger university system.
