On Sunday the 18th of April it became public news that 12 teams had formally signed up to be a part of a breakaway tournament, with more clubs to follow. Real Madrid president Perez is the main instigator of the ESL. He started it as a way to "save football" as he was arguing that games in tournaments like the Champions league were not challenging enough, so essentially they wanted to replace the Champions league. However when the public got wind of this it all went downhill fast.
There was a vote held on the BBC about whether or not people were in favour of the USL and 89% of people said 'no'. Within the UK many fans took to the streets to protest their clubs joining the ESL. The premier league said in a statement that a super league would destroy the premise of open competition, why UEFA and other top domestic leagues have signed a joint statement of condemnation. FIFA has threatened to ban players from participating in Broadcut if they participate in a breakaway tournament why UEFA would take the same stance with the European Championships making many fans fear that players at super league clubs or not be allowed to play at Euro 2020. After the public outcry all six Premier League teams have dropped out however some still remain. Ada S Hegerberg a professional football player said that "Greed is not the future", conveying the overall consensus that this was a ploy to get more money and it will not be supported by the fans. Locally, AFC Wimbledon officially joined the nationwide backlash against a proposed European Super League insisting the controversial plans are “not in the wider interests of football”. When interviewing a Maddie Pheasant, a teenager who supports Liverpool she said "This is a disgrace to football, it shows the shift in football from a sport for the people to a way to make money."
