With Canada’s vaccine supply dwindling in the face of reduced supply, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government could soon find out whether a $440-million investment in a separate vaccine initiative will pay off.
The COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access Facility (COVAX) intends to let each of its 190 member countries, including Canada, know how many doses it can expect to receive in the next three days. COVAX was set up early in the pandemic to promote fair, equitable, and timely access to COVID vaccines by all countries, regardless of their wealth. In return for Canada’s nearly half-billion dollar investment in the initiative, the country was promised vaccines for up to 20 per cent of the population.
