We begin today with the war on hate — and the fact that new tools are needed. A professor of constitutional and international law said none of Canada’s major political parties is bringing anything new to the table to curb the rise of hate crime in the country. The Liberal government has presented itself as the champion of diversity, equality, and reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples since coming into power in 2015. It promised action in these areas, and repeated the promise in its latest throne speech, and even in the 2021 budget. But recent hate crimes — including against Muslims, Jews, and Asians — have renewed pressure on the government to take stronger action.
