A Spirit Airlines plane that caught fire on a runway in Atlantic City last October was damaged by a nine-pound bald eagle that flew into its right engine, according to an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board. Four people suffered minor injuries during the evacuation of the aircraft. Bird strikes occur in about 1 of every 2,000 flights, mostly around takeoff, but the vast majority of these incidents are not reported. The deadliest bird strike incident in the U.S. happened in 1960, when an Eastern Airlines flight crashed into Boston Harbor, killing 62 people.
