Also on the show in china is complicated and growing influence in its single part in politics. Should officials be alarmed. Well take a closer look and a huge storm hits china dumping heavy rains and forcing tens of thousands to fleet the floods and mud slides. The. My name is melissa chan, thanks for joining us pockets. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but investigator suspect the involvement of the Islamic StateGroup Officials pledge to hunt down those behind the bombing of hundreds of follow was of the jump me yet. So many that the organizers put up extra 10 to the crowds as they were announcing the arrival of the apache official, the boat my debts and they took his device directly next to the stage where the lead a ship was sitting. Close by when the blast occurred to me. When i arrived at the scene, i was met with a devastating sight, lifeless bodies scattered across the ground. People crying out to help meet the blood stained surroundings. Well see that people were picking up the bodies on their own. Well, im not sure. The bombing was intended to weaken the potty head of elections. I expected lights of next year, insisting that the tax of this nature will not den that resolve the Ethnic Chinese make up about 75 percent of the single pores population constituting the Largest Ethnic Group in the multi racial country. That also includes malays and indians. And over the past decade badging has stepped up as its efforts to reach out to chinese single portions in a way that has drawn concern from the city states political establishment. Notably, the Chinese Communist party has sought to build relationships with singapore and media, giving journalists special access in return for favorable coverage. You may remember the disappearance of chinese tennis star punch, why . She had accused the senior official in china, of Sexual Assault as global concern about her well being group and briefly re appeared speaking to singapore, a newspaper man hunts outbox. Joining us is shabani matoney of the washington post. She published a Major Investigation examining the relationship between china and a single port, and shes also co author of an upcoming book among the braves hope struggle and eggs out in the battle for hong kong in the future of global democracy. Written along with timothy mclaughlin. Shabani, lets look a bit more at media. We mentioned the newspaper, liam, how about, how does its coverage appear to reflect beatings, point of view. Yes, so to do this investigation, we basically compiled about 800 articles from softball, and you know, what, what we wanted to do was a very forensic examination of the coverage. And so we, we divided this by categories of topics that would be sensitive to, to china. Or topics that, you know, being has such a kind of control the narrative for example, you know, the ongoing human rights abuses in John Hong Kong and the board marcus, the, you know, move to the taiwan and basically on, on, you know, all of these types of topics we found that itself, i was actually, you know, more using the mainland sources of ccp, official sources. They were using pro, vision media and really not offering that much of a kind of val, its a kind of print and these are the sensitive topics. And then last time that we also found that their opinion section actually had a number of um, ccp, you know, katia officials involved in actually propaganda writing these beds. But they would not be the identified. A such just simply identified as china is coming to this. And so what impact does Something Like that have on ethic, chinese and singapore . So yeah, so you know, the one really interesting thing thats been happening in, in recent years is that the ethic trinity is population single for especially um, southern parts of it. Older, older people specifically have to come more and more sort of over the probation in the view. So you know, people have been posting on read it single, which is very vibrant for him. Saying that the parents, instead of being radical, i as you know i, i grew up in single pool. So i said friends told me that the parents, you know, were pretty kind of like neutral a political and suddenly become very, very straight to be provisioning. And you know, that was seen during coven, but some of them were even psych stream that they only wanted to take the final back, even though this simple government was a really advising to take, you know, 5, so might interest the inventory, big seats. And so, you know, looking at the school media landscape, were very interested to figure out like, where lot of this radicalization was coming from. A lot of it comes from you know, forwarded whats up messages from tv and so on. But so far as like a very trusted newspaper here, you know, a flagship like ship brought sheet of paper in the that the, the narratives will only being sort of backed up all sort of how did, by the coverage in self already werent offering any kind of alternative view, they werent offering that sort of kind of balance or kind of point and then thats, thats what i, what i want uh, investigation. So how is this playing out politically . Are singaporean officials worried . Yeah, i mean, i think, i think thats a really, really interesting question. I think single has, has, you know, for so long have this policy or kind of neutrality that please will make us take sides. You know, we have this very Strong Defense relationship with us. But we also have this very strong uh, you know, and i work relationship and obvious cultural ties with china. Um and i think the so long as they can pause also, you know, how to manage the fact that it is the majority ethic training. You stayed within a very diverse se, asia, right . I mean, indeed, the whole founding story i was thinking for was that of multi ethnic, multi culturalism over sort of, um, you know, being a, you know, purchasing anyone when sort of ethnic group. So i think i think the sample will cover his sort of have to be very careful and dealing with this they, they, they dont seem to want to kind of upset bilateral relationships with china. But at the same point, i think they realize that, you know, if too many single brands are really starting to subscribe to this narrative of, of this sort of, you know, china dream has a sort of promote advice. You can ping like that has a very sort of time. I think chinese sort of been true. But then i think they realize that the fabric of singapore itself could, could really be threaded. Right. But you know, its, its, its been interesting to see how they have to kind of tool the line between, between that written upsetting china, but also not letting this get out of that book. Really looking at Southeast Asia on is beatings, focus on the single port, any different then its activities elsewhere in the region. Actually the interesting thing is that we found that, you know, single was not really an isolated case here. I think, you know, in, in the lease, you know, with that thing, chinese population have had given historical and long term sort of grievances that because of you know, very ethnic policies that the state has, you see more and more. I think trinity is also kind of subscribing will be they come in, you know, very, very probation in the, in the view point. And then well view and that is also true in buckets of indonesia, thailand, to associates. We didnt look as closely, but it is, it is a regional story, right . I mean, china being the, the, the biggest neighbor here, us, china being sort of the defining issue. You know, of all time it has remained polarized a big part of a Society Ready to meet with you have people becoming more and more afraid of me for us actually. And so i think this conversation right, is this to me, something that, that, that is very carefully managed by governments all across the region. But especially when it comes to the Chinese Community just because the presence, this is so, so launch rates. Obviously she has home to 80 percent of ethics and use of the Mainland China and taiwan, who come shabani, latan 8. Thank you so much for joining us. Ty, phone dexterity continues to leave behind a path of destruction after hitting the philippines, anti one. It has now dumped heavy rain across china, including engaging it is one of the strongest storms to hit the country in years, forcing people to fleet from flood waters. The government has issued a red alert across the capital and several provinces, a devastation. As far as to, i can see the effect for the last 2 homes, forced in hundreds of posts in the field in eastern, which on programs many were stranded for hours before rescue teams by a non city, i think within 280. 00, i was hate fund mazda of plants like filling the streets with much in depth. The destruction cost by lance lights has blocked edwards into many remote areas, making access to fit good for rescue teams. So all we encountered mudslides in land slides when we were on the way to the disaster area. And we had to clear the area with other rescuers to create a safe path. This dawn left more than a 1000000 homes without problem. Cousins would be, can do it back to asian fences.
