very fascinated by the shapes that make in the sky. the magic usually happens when the flock of starlings is attacked by birds of prey. as a defense mechanism they create these very organic shapes can do is research and turn up and then hope for the best. i've been out probably 120 days in the last 4 years and i've probably had between 5 and 10 very good nights. i saw starting memory since when i was a little kid my parents took me to the west coast that much when i was 10 that was an image that never left me really. then i did portraits. 25 years. i suddenly it came to me that i wanted to go back to see those starlings and try to photograph them. continues to make for treats as well he's taking photos of celebrities like amy winehouse. adele. the white stripes. and. that's really been my specialty and something that i've been pretty obsessed with i've completed it's 5 different books of portraits of mainly famous people the new project. that i've been. doing there for a while it's very different it's nature and. it's very humbling in a way it's. the heart museum of contemporary art in a danish city hanging is now showing his photos in a major exhibition. i haven't moved one single bird in photoshop in this project. its nature. and its nature at its most surreal. these magic moments occur by themselves. originally you seem to rector hard to remember plan to exhibits like us photos of danish pop stars but the pictures of the black sun series made such an impression on him that he changed his plan we know what's going on we can explain it and at the same time we see something which is so incredibly beautiful that it is difficult to comprehend. zunes i guess plan to spend one week with the starlings turned into a 4 year project. every picture is totally different i have not in 4 years experienced the same most have twice. so that gives me a great incentive to keep going and i'm far from done with this project i think i will keep going for a few more years. living in lockdown in an artwork well what would that artwork look like well for me it would resemble something like the scream or one german artist has found a unique way to make a statement about the liberties which have been curtailed during this time his installations with mannequins like this one here have been popping up all over germany now we met up with the artist to find out more about this project. it's been hard to her i saw it and immediately thought that it had something to do with corona and that's what we're not. actually i thought if it was about discounts and so i could get some shots because of the color of the. stuff and it's a group of people women children men and even animals everyone has mastered these days. so you don't recognize people anymore i would argue it's colorful and that's why it brings joy to the heart and that's what we're missing. at 11 am right in front of cologne cathedral dennis josefa magic and his team set up $111.00 money came because his installation it is like it is a symbol for the corona pandemic and its social effects. represents the movement restrictions that we have during these corona times we can't do what we like to do and move around the way that we're used to especially in times of crisis we see how our lives can change and things we have taken for granted can suddenly become a thing of the past. the pedestrian area have more on those results and what they might mean for september's general election in germany also coming up fear and death on the streets of me and. her testers continue to defy the joneses a crackdown on dissent as many as 14 people killed by police in young going alone in another day. and a protest outside new scotland yard after police violently break up a spontaneous vigil by women i was meant to cast a spotlight on violence against women that's after a police officer is charged with the murder of sarah never are. i'm way across thanks for joining us polls are closed in 2 german federal states but with a single message unhappiness with i'm going to party these. southwestern states of bottom dirtbag and a lot in a border france and each other but they're governed by very different coalitions their election today has been called a dress rehearsal for germany's general election later this year and if so chancellor merkel's conservatives might need to be worried the c.d.u. is down several percentage points in both and that could make all the difference in a national election. let's take a look at those early projection results 1st turning to bodden 1st and beg the greens are up slightly at 30.7 percent and chancellor angela merkel's conservative c.d.u. down to 23.3 percent that's a $3.00 percentage difference from where they were currently now the current opposition in parliament they fall and it up at about the same place the far right the alternative for germany there at 11.8 percent there another big loser of the night down 3.3 percentage points with the center left s.p.d. at 11.7 percent and the business friendly f.t.p. they've risen actually to 11.3 percent there are some other parties but they won't make it over the 5 percent threshold that's necessary to hold seats in the state legislature. now those results taking up speaking of those seats could translate into the seat distribution at the state parliament there are 143 in all let's have a quick look at those the incumbent coalition that's the greens and. party the greens with 50 seats the c.d.u. could end up with $37.00 seats that would be anough to continue the coalition and the opposition in parliament that would give the center right s.p.d. the social democrats 19 seats the far right populist a.f.d. 19 seats as well and the business friendly f.t.p. 18 seats. and joining me now for more in the studio as you have used chief political editor. for and for the events in stuttgart with us in the state capital is our political correspondent julia said early julia 1st to you how do these results that we've now seen compare with what was expected. they are pretty much what we expected the polls before today had already shown that it looked like the greens would come in 1st which has happened with quite a divide from. you which came in 2nd which was already seen losing some points especially compared to the previous election 5 years ago also with the other smaller parties it's what we were already expecting one thing to keep in mind is that this year has seen a record vote by mail and that these results we might start seeing later so this is something to keep in mind as we look at these 1st exit polls and forecasts coming in and now all eyes are pointing to what kind of coalition will come out of this the expectation was and remains that the governing coalition between the greens and the c.d.u. i'm going to america's conservative party will continue but there is also a possibility of a so-called traffic light coalition between the greens the social democrats the s.p.d. and the business friendly f.d.p. party so what seem to be the issues are the biggest issues that drove people to the polls to make the the the voting decisions they did. well the coronavirus pandemic has been the overwhelming issue this time around it has overcome even more local issues that we might have seen people here have evaluated the outcome of the local government the regional government policy in terms of handling the coronavirus pandemic quite positively also by come firming the greens and the result at the greens but also in polls they have shown that they pretty much support with the government has done more this satisfaction is directed towards the federal government led by america. we've seen a slow vaccine rollout we've seen a lockdown still in place after many months with cases ticking up going up again with a widespread new variant so definitely the coronavirus has been dominating and then trying to find a balance between reaching climate goals and important business here. which is the automobile industry and there have been pressures from both sides in trying to find a balance between keeping this important economic source growing but also trying to meet these goals in terms of climate change truly are so deadly there for us and should guard the capital of bob baer one of those elections taking place let's turn now back to the studio to michelle kitchener we just heard from julie about that seeming contradiction environmental ism climate change heavy car influence in how have the greens been so successful in that state because the man who leaves the greens the current state catchment is someone who leans very heavily into conservative. territory this was such fun was seen as the favorite even by seaview conservative followers more people from i'm going to. want to agree. in government their. own candidate so that is if defeat and something rather remarkable just happened back something became very tangible that still seen as pretty much unthinkable at the national level which is that a government could be formed without the patient of on them ackles c.d.u. and that's something that will be watched very closely that is something that's already being celebrated as a success by the social democrat s.p.d. top candidates the current finance minister here all off so it sees as the big top line the s.p.d. of this evening that could very much be possible at this very moment in time it's wishful thinking by the democrats and potentially also by the greens but the greens of course very happy that's what the polling currently takes as a given which is that the period after i'm going to michael will see a black green coalition so conservative led coalition with participation as the greens is by no means at this moment in time so what heading into an election period that's much more open than many pollsters predicted so far so that's one state election about let's turn now to the other state election happening today that's a lot to made just next door to body bag those exit polls have also come in and according to early results from that state incumbents that's the center left social democrats the s.p.d. they are coming away with 34.5 percent of the vote the business friendly f.t.p. with 6.5 percent the environmentalist greens they've ticked up a bit in that state to 8.5 percent meanwhile the opposition could be chancellor merkel's conservative c.d.u. to 26 percent that's a decrease of 6 percent and the f.t. with 10.5 percent also down significantly losing. 2 per cent the free voters another party or regional party there has ticked up a bit of 5 and a half percent or as other parties again below that 5 percent threshold to make it into the state legislature now how will those results translate into possible seats in the state parliament there's 101 in all in. let's take a quick look so the present coalition center left s.p.d. 38 seats business friendly f.t.p. 7 seats environment was greens 9 seats that means a coalition could potentially continue chancellor merkel's conservative c.d.u. with 29 seats and the f.t. with 12 seats the free voters picking up 6 of those seats turning back to michelle if you're there now so this other state election what can we take away from these initial results that it's all about the candidates model to the social democrat state premier is a very popular political figure and it's down to her that the social democrats were able to defend their position and actually as the 1st. the strongest possible most likely form of government they're a remarkable the defeat for the conservative c.d.u. party was most likely i dare say not just into the poor performance of the central government when it comes to securing enough vaccine all of that certainly a factor but also the in the posse scandal which saw m.p.'s having to sign a piece of paper basically verifying that they didn't take advantage of the corona crisis finance these so that still brewing scandal here and many and a very interesting point is that the far right if tea party is the losing and that was seeing in new political force the veda basically appear at the conservative political horizon so there's more fragmentation in the sequel that unscathed and the social democrats just proved in that one state at least. still there just about in the double digits nationally that is a beacon of strength still and what used to be that the big tent party the social democrats so the light at the end of the tunnel for them maybe of course in addition to these scandals you mentioned there's also the big elephant in the room is of course depend them agrees that this is the 1st elections in the pandemic has that played any role. absolutely i mean that defines the daily lives of most people here but here the polling has shown that a lot of the responsibility is seen firmly with the central government for a lot of failings despite the fact that the individual states are responsible for a lot of the just take so a lot of this was very much on regional territory and it was all about the popularity of the candidates and that means it's a very tough day for the man tips to potentially following them in anger machall footsteps indeed i mean less of the current leader of the conservative c.d.u. has a lot of explaining to do and you say can get another hit most likely also within his own popularity so that's not looking good for him whereas michael souter the other man tipped to potentially take on that for us conservative c.d.u. chancellor candice marcus it can draw some strength out of this but it's still very early days in what will feel like a very long election period indeed and we talk a lot about the state elections in germany what is the impact of states and state politics at the national level that guides german policy making but it's pivotal because these states have seats in the upper house of german parliament so there's significant chunks of legislation that have to be passed through the board also they sit at the table just saying in the day to day politics of corona in these meetings with german chancellor angela merkel where we do the state premiers have most of the power when it comes to implementing corona measures but also into law making finding new rules and regulations so a lot of power is in these regions and their very much speaking with very different political voices not just over corona but also when we look towards who could come top in this very important general elections which will mark the end of anglo mack also chopped into politics a delicate political balance thanks for breaking it all down for us the w.'s chief political editor for. now let's take a look at some of the other stories making news around the world. police in the netherlands have used water cannon and baton to disperse a large crowd of anti lockdown protesters more than 2000 people had massed in the hague on the eve of dutch parliamentary elections months of harsh restrictions have fueled a growing dissatisfaction with the government. spanish police have seized $600.00 kilos of handling of a vigil in honor of murder victim sarah ever our people once again defied a ban on gatherings this time to mass outside new scotland yard that's the headquarters of london's metropolitan police they're upset at violence women face every day but also at how police forcibly broke up a vigil to honor sarah every on saturday a local police officer has been accused of killing the 33 year old woman. i would immediately acknowledge how deep the problems of institutional misjudging mean i was in the police force you can see it in the way policing is carried out you can see it in the way that we have a poorly no conviction rates and charge rates for rape and sexual violence in the police have a role to play in that and you can see it in how poorly the police form when they have to investigate their own offices there is there was a super complaint produced by the center for women's justice which examined several cases showing time and time again in all sorts of different ways that the police just can't be relied on to. be objective and honest about what's going on within the force i would also open up a conversation between women who feel betrayed by the police so that police get an understanding of what it's like and what to be a woman in the city hoping that the police who protect them and use that to inform the strategies and culture change that is desperately
