While main street hardly noticed, trump continues claiming that the vote was rigged. 70 percent of republicans believe him. 70000000 people voted for him. Can joe biden change their hearts and minds . Is he bipartisan enough to bridge these divided United States of america . Im burnt off in berlin. This is the day the country is genuinely divided. How much damage has the president done . How much damage cant do that preceded donald trump . But it certainly was excel rated by his presidency. Well, i think he has definitely set back the democratic norms here in the United States. Be abuse. We can invite people to bridge the differences that divide us the division. Lets begin that work to heal, you know, to heal and unite in america as well as the world. Also coming up when are you planning to travel again, by plane . The pandemic has grounded air travel now, the Australian Airline quantz, it says, it knows how to protect your health and the health of the entire industry. And we are looking at changing your terms of contagions to say, for International Travelers. At that, we will ask people to fix nation before they can get on the aircraft. Our viewers on p. B. S. In the United States and to all of you around the world. Welcome. We begin to day with the kind of american exceptionalism that no one is bragging about. According to pew research, the pandemic has revealed how uniquely pervasive and deep the divide in american politics in society is 90 percent. Say a victory by the other Political Party would result in lasting harm to the us. But it is not only politics here, religion, trust in science, respect for government, race relations, national identity, attitudes towards the media. These are all areas where people usually debate, but in the us they have become markers of a toxic, tribal and binary system that gives you 2 choices. Youre like us or youre like them. It is this demonization of each other that president elect. Joe biden has promised to address biden is the closest to a bipartisan president. Americans have known in a long time, a centrist, yet his ability to bridge the divide may depend on what voters in the u. S. State of georgia decide in january. He doesnt use Washington Bureau chief in this poll has more tonight on a nation deeply divided in the heart of one of the most divided counties in georgia. Nice. The town minutes with half of its population is white and 48 percent is africanamerican. In an antique shop in downtown, we find many items that reflect the time when milledgeville was jewel, just the state capital. That was during the civil war in the confederacy, including draw into fault to keep slavery. Some elements of that time still seem relevant to shop owner in their youth and seems to be stuck in the past. There is never, never going to be equality in race. He has a grim take on the current political situation now, and i dont think the republicans and the democrats are going to maybe own level play and fail. Floyd griffin has been doing his bit to level George Allens political Playing Field for decades. He was the 1st democrat to have been elected from this area to the georgia senate, and also served as milledgeville is mayor. The bottom line is racism here and an american president , majority of White Community are going to be in a minority here pretty soon. And they think youre that youre black and brown, people are going to take over the divisions here in milledgeville, broadly reflect those of the whole of the usa bringing together people who feel as differently as floyd, griffin, and, and seek shop owner. Larry used to do is a major challenge, but they need to Work Together on the many problems in the country and in the town. Stephen hall was or has some ideas. He is the director of the local library and tells organize the initiative on the table brings people together to discuss local issues in a constructive way. He approaches low drama and encourages everyone to get involved. I think the Biggest Issue for us is what is america . Weve had a lot of changes in the last couple years and a lot of the norms that weve had for better or for worse and gone away. And i think were looking at a future of what is our value . What are our ideas of how we should behave toward each other and what is the common purpose that we have . I think weve lost a little track about and id love to see that come together in the future for that americans have to start listening to one another and stop shouting over each other. Or you just poll just returned from georgia. She is back in washington d. C. Tonight. She joins me from our bureau there. Good evening to you, enos. You know, i enjoyed watching your story and i wanted to ask you, did you get the impression that voters in georgia . Are they fully aware of the weight of their votes in these 2 Runoff Elections for, the u. S. Senate you know, political x. , if people most definitely are in there has been a lot of voter outreach and voter rights or registration programs, especially actually from stacey average. Because that they hope that they can bring more voters out even after the 6 trini contentious election cycle. And unfortunately, when there is no president on the ballot, there is usually less voter turnout. But these are kind of the politically active people, the average people, they kind of tired of going out and vote. It doesnt seem very democratic or fear for one state to decide the fate of the u. S. Senate or maybe even the presidency. How many times did voters in georgia tell you the political system needs changing the, i mean, they have always been complains about how the 2 party system is set up. I mean, if you are able to hold your own, the left 2 options and people do come play in about that a lot. Even. So i mean, right now in this very divided country, those who are still strong trump supporters. They dont want any other party. They just want to be able to vote again for donald trump if you ask them. And we know george went for joe biden in this years election, or voters in georgia. Are they in love with joe biden . Or do they love the fact that he is not drawn . Thats a good question actually, and its good to ask the whole United States. I mean, we have to keep in mind at the end of the day, georgia is an incredibly red, conservative state. By all measures, there has been a mixture of pro biden and anti trump borders. I mean, i think what is really different this time is the democrats were able to get large turnout from democratic voters and new waters thats different from 4 years ago. And its not just about what can one. We know that its also about democrats and republicans in the its about this deep divide in the United States. How divided is the wider country at the moment . It is a very divided. I was able to travel the United States from one side to the other just before the election and we experienced that this country. And this also appears in the little piece we just saw, kind of has lost the ability to talk with each other to talk to discuss really complicated topics like abortion rights or gun restrictions or health care for everybody or the question, how much taxes people should pay but the problem here right now is that facts for many people dont really matter anymore. And that opens really the doors to conspiracy theories. So yes, georgia is very divided. So is the whole United States near before we run of the time. Just ask you if georgia returns to republican senators in this Runoff Election in january will, will that mean that the democrats will have to reach across the political aisle even more if they want to get anything done . Absolutely, i mean, if the senate stays in favor of the republicans, which actually many expect to happen biden will most certainly have to reach out across the aisle, which actually he is able to do. Thats kind of his political gift. But the real concern for him is how the liberal wing within his own party will then react. I mean, if, if he has to really reach out to conservatives, he might see some serious, serious political fighting within the democratic party. You know, you know, well see what happens in january. January will be the month when much is designed. In his poll our Washington Bureau chief in us, thank you. It was late on monday when us president elect joe biden finally received the go ahead to start the transition process, but biden, hes been preparing for weeks now. On tuesday, he presented the people he plans to nominate for Critical National security and Foreign Policy positions. Its a team that will keep our country and our people safe and secure. Its a team that reflects the fact that america is back ready to lead the world. Not retreat from it. Once again, sit at the head of the table, ready to confront our adversaries, and not reject our allies ready to stand up for our values. In fact, it calls from World Leaders and ive had about 18 to 20 so far. Im not sure the exact number in the weeks since we won the election. Ive been struck by how much theyre looking forward to the United States reasserting its a story of groll as a global leader. Well, joining me tonight from washington is karen de young. She is senior National Security correspondent at the Washington Post here and its good to have you on the day you coauthored a piece in todays post that caught our eyes. The headline reads, bidens nominees have pushed policies that trump used to fuel his rise. We have a deck circle, want to show our viewers here. You write that democrats are worried about bidens pick so far. How they try to govern this time will be a major test of whether biden feels the need to respond to the anxieties among supporters of trump. Whether he views his election as a sweeping mandate to shift in an entirely different direction or whether he settles somewhere in the middle. Who among bidens picks have triggered soul searching and worries among democrats. Hello. Well, its good to be here. You know, it was interesting, bernie thing, anders who obviously represents the progressive wing of the party, put out a tweet today saying out where the progressives, in the cabinet, people that have to are there are very, very traditional people who have all worked for biden or with biden, for many, many years. Now, these are all the people who, who are going to be doing Foreign Policy and National Security. I think what sanders and the progress of the party care much more about are the people who are generating our economic and, and financial think so it remains to be seen who bidens going to who by is going to pick. Although it looks a surge and you know, and its going to be the treasury secretary probably have the Federal Reserve and i think that is not something that will make a progressive wing very happy. You know, thats true. We did see the dell go over 30000 points today on news of yellen being the nominee. Who would you, or who would be a good choice in your opinion, to send a signal to trump, voters that president elect biden is thinking of them too. Well, i think that, you know, they have everything he said during the campaign other, i dont think many, many troops of course, were listening at the point at that point. And certainly president sharpen his own campaign. Was sort of describing bidens platform in a way that wasnt necessarily completely true. I think that biden, you know, he said, look, my 1st interests are solving the problem of the coronavirus, righting the economy. And i think that thats one thing that democrats have said whether theyre moderates or progressives have said, look, we learned from the last time we did let manufacturing jobs go overseas. We didnt pay enough attention to people in socalled, red states who are losing their jobs, who are unable to, to adapt to a Service Economy to high tech. So i think that thats something that hes going to be stressing. He did stress during the campaign, but again, i think that not many times push listening to karen, you know, biden says that he wants to help heal the soul of america. He wants to end americans demonization of each other. I mean, when you hear words like that, i mean, you cant get much more centrist than that, can you . No, and i think hes serious about it. I mean hes, he, if he feels like his task over the next 40 years is, is to unify america, which is, which is as your previous speaker was saying, you know, its just extremely divided. And so i think that he does view that not only out in the country, but certainly in congress, you know, as, depending on what happens in the georgia runoff in an hour in january, i think that hes either going to find himself faced with a, with a very, very narrow majority or with no majority at all in the senate. And thats going to make it harder. Hes hoping that he can use relationships that he built over many, many years in senate south dealing with republicans to bridge this, divide him essentially get something done. And hes also hoping that a lot of these republicans in congress and senate are people who were secretly not very happy with trent, but, and of were afraid to stand up against him. And that now that the elections over that perhaps theyll be more amenable. Im not quite so sure how good a bet that he has, but i think thats his intention. I said at the beginning of our program that joe biden seems to be the most bipartisan president that the United States has had in a long time. Doesnt that mean that he is maybe, uniquely equipped and positioned to do to bridge this tremendous divide that exists in politics and in society . I dont think that that. Im not sure thats a fair characterization. I think that if you look at certainly bill clinton, george bush, or obama, they are started out saying, you know, when america unity, president about the americans. And i think that the, the divided government where you, in many cases have had, have had a congress at least one house, if not to a Different Party than the president has made that kind of governing more and more difficult. Certainly, i mean this in a better position than others to, to make that happen because he served in the senate and because he was known as a kind of guy who would reach out in the senate. And he was certainly like that as a bomb. As far as president , i mean that was one of the whole city played was to reach out to, to look into except for the beginning of first term were in the majority of the senate. Todays press conference with bidens picks. We were talking about in the newsroom. It was amazingly call, non boisterous and even downright polite. Im wondering for 4 years, americans and the world have been hooked on donald trump. And his style of politics. We hear now from americans that they want the temperature in the bar, you turned them down. Do you believe them here . Most of them want that. There are some who are not going to give up who are not going to turn the volume down, but i think by and large, people are exhausted. Its been a very tumultuous. 4 years. People are tired, people are tired of conflict then i think thats partly what, what biden is counting on. And thats why he hasnt been quite so fiery in a way that will generally be even more true supporters. I mean, you can forget the fact that 73000000 people voted for donald trump. Thats a lot of people. And many of them have been out of the streets. I think that these divisions are going to last for a while, but theres no question that you know, this sort of waking up 1st thing in the morning and see what crisis or disaster, or conflict or contentious situation is going to dominate the day, or even have today because sometimes a turnover in the middle of the day, i think a large, theres a big relief and that will give biden some points at the beginning. Not a whole lot. Not for a long time. Itll give him a chance, at least overwrites karen de young. So you National Security correspondent of the Washington Post there. We appreciate your time in your insights tonight. Thank you. Youre welcome. Thank you. Australias Largest Airline quanta. This is suggesting that it could make a coronavirus vaccination, a requirement for all International Air travelers. The flag carrier is the 1st Major Airline to suggest that such rules could become commonplace. In the air travel industry of the news comes as the International Air transport association is announcing that its developing a Digital Health pass that can be used to record in fruit coated 19 tests or back to the nation. This is what quantas c. E. O. Alan joyce said about the vaccine require it. We are looking at changing our terms of contentions to say for International Travelers at that we will ask people to have a vaccination before they can get on the aircraft. And what do you need at the best . Well have to see what happens with copa 90 in the market, but certainly for International Visitors coming out and people leaving the country. We think thats in the says city. My colleague, dr. Drew is we here at the big table at the sea. Im not completely surprised by this. I mean, whats at stake here . I guess whats really at stake is the future of the Airline Industry itself. I think were seeing the 1st signs of what we might all have to live with. If we want to get back on board the airplanes. The elon industry has lost over 100000000000. 00 u. S. Dollars. So far this year, the australian carrier has lost 2000000000. 00 u. S. Dollars. They have laid off 8 and a half 1000 Staff Members already. Theyve grounded 200. 00 airplanes. And of course this is the same across the industry. Weve seen bankruptcy, virgin australia, latterman, brazil, fly. Be in the u. K. We were also norwegian air, which is on the brink. Karen in europe, so the airlines are really doing whatever they can to make sure that they can get people back on the planes, but also for to assure that people feel safe once theyre there. And i out of the body that oversees the Airline Industry. They are, as you said, introducing this Digital Health pass, which will keep all your testing and vaccine information. And as weve said, will require vaccinations for International Travelers. Once that become widely available, you know whats to become widely available. Whats been the response from travelers to . Well, this mounting social Media Campaign now to boycott is not just coming from the socalled Anti Vaccination Movement that weve seen long before covert 19. We have a few tweets that weve been looking at. We have one from the british, the cheek travel agency, they say we have made a Company Decision today to not sell any quantas flies even on a code share following their announcement of no vaccination, no fly. Weve also got one from an australian columnist and t. V. Contributor. She says that this could have gone with any number of options, Rapid Testing proof of negative test on flying, but its attempting to force a medical decision on customers. Im not anti vacs unvaccinated. Im also vehemently anti corporate bullying under the guise of health. Of course, other people are supporting this move. Many people are saying that they would feel safer knowing that everyone aboard their plane. I mean, it is an individual decision if youre, if youre vaccinated and you know, you dont have to worry about catching it. What do you think this is going to mean though, for all passengers moving forward . But i think of course, a lot of people are eager to get back onto those planes. We want to go visit our families. We want to go on holiday. It is some time away before a vaccine is rolled out. But there are questions that really needs to be on if you know, theres, if this becomes seen is not a new idea. Many countries, for example, demand that you have a yellow fever vaccine if you have visited areas. So if you look at the broader implications, the mind opening up a can of worms here, we already have governments saying they will not demand vaccines from anyone. The German Government has said that legally speaking, could a Company Start demanding vaccines, of course, depends on where you are in the world. In the u. S. , for example, a company is allowed to demand from its employees, for example, that they get vaccinated. Ethical questions are really or here are we creating by doing this, a 2 tier society, really where we have people with vaccinations have broader rights than those that weve heard the final word on this. Thats for sure. Thank you. Well finally, its not yet december, but after a year of walk downs and shutdowns for some christmas, cannot come soon enough. Here in berlin, the city has turned on the Christmas Lights along the famous shopping boulevard. Due to the pandemic, the tradition took place this year with the usual ceremony, and crowds stores are, of course, quieter than usual. But shoppers who are out do not plan to let the pandemic. They say there she well, the day is almost done. The conversation continues online, youll find us on twitter either at news or you can follow me at t. V. And remember whatever happens between now and then, tomorrow is another day. Well see you then a few, but were all in this together. It was the slogan on social media back when the corona pandemic started around the world. It has since then come clear, the full are suffering economic inequality the to reinforce truth on d. W. E. Coli furka so more energy to burkina faso. This doesnt just mean transitioning to new energy here, it means having access to electricity. Currently, only about 5 percent of the population has this privilege. The government project is seeking to change that the 1st 60 minutes. Whats the secret behind this classical music, a sound man. As soon as you hear beethoven lose your man or the story behind the music was a hit for the ages. British and the bad lad, beethovens 9th symphony for the world starts to simmer down on w. Welcome to global 3000. This week we focus on one of our worlds biggest problems, inequality societies, where the gap is huge between rich and poor, where many people are being left behind. And that is the full. The pandemic negates indonesia, which each of the coronavirus look down is currently in the midst of a baby boom, making life tough for many mothers. And in the face of this rising inequality, we ask, what can be done about it and discover that we can learn a lot from europe. Why . In many societies today, theres a sharp divide between rich and poor, between those who have and those who dont. And despite living in the same country, these different groups often feel little connection to each other. President elect joe biden, put it like this. This is its having the effect of pulling us apart. The numbers, say it for themselves. The worlds richest 10 percent own 83 percent of Global Wealth and the wealthiest one percent owns an amazing 44 percent of global assets. Nor is there much hope on the horizon. In many countries, the Global Pandemic has widened the gap between rich and poor. Around half of the worlds 3300000000 workers have either already lost their jobs or are at risk of doing so. Foreign lightman thinkers, it goes without saying that all people are morally equal. But that appears naive or even cynical in light of the vast and enduring inequalities between rich and poor in countries around the world. When the coronavirus pandemic erupted, it was often claimed that it hits all social classes equally hard. Some politicians and celebrities even went so far as to claim it would help promote equality in society. A bathrobe clip from madonna is just one example but is that true . No, certainly not. I cant think of a single country where is in use of a conflict to want that would mean the richest, lose on the poorest and least affected. What we see is the exact opposite of Public Health researcher Richard Wilkinson studies the social and Health Effect of income inequality. And what is happening during and because of the pandemic corresponds to a central thesis of a book. He coauthored the spirit level published in 2009. Life is much shorter in lower social class. And in britain, if you take the richest and poorest 10 percent, you find 10 year difference in life expectancy. Sometimes the biggest social injustice in modern societies are human rights abuse. In countries with high levels of social inequality, the rates of covered 19 infections and deaths are also high. The gini index is a measure of income inequality. South africa and brazil are both very high up in the rankings. Meaning they have some of the highest rates of inequality. According to this measure, the United States has one of the highest rates among developed nations. The virus has hit, especially hard. Ellen works in berlin for oxfam, an ngo that focuses on alleviating poverty worldwide. The pandemic has hit in the world that was already characterized by massive inequalities driven by the climate crisis. And poor working conditions of our Analysis Shows that the pandemic is merely making preexisting inequalities even more extreme, and hits the poorest the hardest, the tough and learned what makes countries marked by extreme inequality so vulnerable, more vulnerable than even some of the least developed countries. It seems one contributory factor is the interaction between rich and poor. The 1st person to die of covert 19 in Rio De Janeiro was a 63 year old to mess deke worker. She caught it from her employer, a very wealthy woman who had been infected with the virus in europe and passed it on there are many such stories, Domestic Workers that contract the virus and introduce it to their families and neighborhoods where it can cause devastation and living at very close causes drives infection among people who have no way to protect themselves. There is still into action between rich and poor households, which also spits the virus. The difference is that the rich seek medical treatment, while the poor often dont or cant. Statistics show that the poor have been disproportionately hit by the pandemic, both regard to their health and their opportunity to earn a living. According to the gini index, south africa is the worlds most unequal country. Millions of daily brewers found no work at all for weeks on end during the lockdown. Many others also lost their jobs. Hungry and angry people took to the streets to protest. With looking at years of calling our way back to where we were and who are already in quite a bad situation with regard to the labor market. And so its just very, very scary for, for the structure, for the, for the less skilled south africa. The World Bank Estimates that covert 19 could push as many as 150000000 people around the globe into extreme poverty. And theres no evidence that the disease is an equalizer not even in developed nations in the wealthy and knighted state. More and more people are so desperate that theyre lining up for food donations. Obvious 19 is being likened to a next ray revealing fractures in the fragile skeleton of the societies we have built while we are all floating on the same sea. It is clear that somebody in super yachts with others are clinging to the thing debris. What can be done to reduce inequality in some scholars say, governments around the world need to introduce a minimum wage, implement Affordable Health care for all raise tax rates for the wealthy and jane tech companies, which are doing great business in the pandemic. And affirm the importance of the welfare state i see one good thing possibly resulting from the crisis that the state and its actions will be less discredited. With what is the both is a state supposed to do right now, 3 dont want big grand projects ever got nothing to do with empowering people. So what the pandemic has made very clear is that if people have basic rights, interest to quality, health and quality education and the ability to actually do their best as individuals. Thats also the key, surely empowering yourself as a mary to coke. Whether even if governments and societies commit to reducing inequality, it could take decades to achieve significant progress. Some inequality scholars say, even now, individuals can make a difference less selfseeking, more solidarity and empathy with others. The pandemic may have brought out the best in many people. I think as well as reducing the differences in the short term, we have to do things about the trust among us a more equal to that is more cohesive, more public spirited, more concerned in the home in a different way. The current pandemic will not be the last crisis the world faces. But what seems clear is that more equitable societies are also more resilient in many ways, and thus better prepared to face the future. And this resilience is far more than just a theory. Finland, for example, boasts one of the narrowest gaps between rich and poor in the world. And so far, its managed to navigate the pandemic fairly unscathed. In fact, now whether e. U. Country has such low infection rates, finance governments headed by Prime Minister saddam irene places great emphasis on welfare policies in south america to one country has proved exemplary during the coronavirus crisis. Europe, why we headed there to find out more this year has been a stressful time for the family. In montevideo. Guillermo was born 2 weeks after the start of the lock down in itself a joyful occasion. But they couldnt share it with anyone or get any help. Because on a christina and her husband, martine, along with the children, had to go into quarantine. There was a suspected case of covert 19 and their circle of friends. If they were there in the boat also, it was terrible for us because the grandmothers couldnt come. No one follows all my brothers. No one could come and the baby, it was really tough. Only gradually were they allowed to visit us at home. The following months were full of uncertainty. As youre a great went into lockdown on a kristina works as a psychologist and noticed the strain on her patients. It was a constant climate of fear, but there was a threat that you had to protect yourself from something that was eating away at you and saw i had another door when i saw all my patients who worries most of them or younger people where you might have thought they would just go with the fly out again. But now they struggle just now 7 months later, the world looks very different. The borders between europe way and its neighbors are still closed. But the small country is so far doing well with less than 100. 00 deaths and only a few 1000 cases overall. Although infections have now risen sharply again, schools and universities closed for a few weeks in the spring. It was the same for shops, but now the streets are busy again. Many people voluntarily wear masks in public. Theres still a need for caution, but theres also an obvious sense of relief that things are not worse than they are. The mood is also one at the posture research institute. When the pandemic started in march, they were able to respond immediately with nationwide testing. The testing kits came from these laboratories. They say the approach taken by the government helped i think one of the big advantages in poor guy compared to other countries, was that both the president and disc, or on a virus team were good supported our scientists right from the start of so that the scientists were then able to make decisions in good time. And i also think that aura, why is one of the few Countries Worldwide with an integrated Health System where everyone has the same rights when it comes to medical treatment to work with them for decades, europe way has invested in its welfare state and that appears to be paying off now in the crisis. The country is home to around 3500000. 00 people. Poverty is definitely an issue in some areas and impossible to overlook in the capital. Still, the mayor of montevideo is proud of the city and says here too, everybody has access to health care. Why, or why has transformed its Public Health service over the past 15 years . Now in this emergency, its exactly this system thats playing a huge role. As the best Health Service of any city in the whole of latin america. You know your equates former president. Jose mohican is one of those credited with reducing the gap between rich and poor. During his 5 years in office. Hes simply known as paper. Here. He was president until 2015 and invested heavily in Health Education and social welfare. Now 85 years old, he agreed to give us an interview in his garage a certain level of prosperity allowed us to develop a social democracy that has shaped the entire country not only structurally and materially, but also in terms of our way of life. We are no a country known for its tolerance where people are very civilized in their dealings with each other. But also when there are differences of opinion or Economic Crises are going to only go personally. I think its one of the best places to be in the whole of latin america. Part of there maybe going to be in the back to the dell family. Theyve been enjoying meeting regularly with relatives and friends again. So what do they think is the secret of your equates relative success in this crisis so far . Apart from good political decisions, they think the country just got lucky to a certain extent. Perhaps its a different mutation of the virus that we have had. That means the cases arent as bad as in europe and perhaps its the climate yet in the saying what a lie. They were
