A turkish cargo ship was the search a breach of International Law, plus move over Federer Gallen joke of h. Russias. Daniel and good wins this season and the a. T. P. Finals as the new generation of stars make their mark on mens tennis. Im brant goff. Its good to have you with us. We start tonight with more encouraging signs in the race to develop a Coronavirus Vaccine. The drug maker, astra zeneca and Oxford University, have announced that their vaccine is up to 90 percent effective in preventing coded 19. The vaccine was most effective when patients were 1st given a half dose, followed by a full dose one month later. In crucially, this new vaccine does not require extreme cold stories, and its relatively cheap and easy to mass produce. These files hold a promising formula for entering the covert. 19 pandemic globally. A cheap, effective, easy to distribute that scene. We have to get a lot of people back from a 2. Were not thinking about Solutions Working in terms of one person at a time. We have to think about vaccinating communities, populations, reducing transmission within those populations. So that we really get on top of this pandemic, and thats what it now looks like. Were going to have the ability to contribute here in a really big way. The vaccine was developed at the u. K. s university of oxford using the adenovirus platform. Researchers took a common cold virus that infects chimpanzees, genetically engineering it to trick the human body into thinking it has been infected with the virus that causes that 19. Im producing an immune response. , over 24000 volunteers took part in the Clinical Trials in the u. K. , brazil, and south africa. The late stage trials show the a donor viral vaccine is better at preventing hospitalizations and severe cases of covert 19 r. N. A. Vaccines developed by madonna and pfizer by on tech. But people are not getting sick with the spike scene, which means that ultimately, even if you want to get ill, you have mild symptoms. And so i think thats incredibly important because itll keep a spittle, bence free, and people wont be dying from this in this virus. And thats not the only advantage. Unlike the m. R. In a vaccines, it can be kept at normal french temperatures, making it easier to distribute, especially in developing countries. It can also be manufactured at scale, meaning it can be produced in much greater quantities and that much lower cost than its rivals. But i think this will be a truly global for in terms of its deploy ability and its accessibility. And its going to be probably more affordable than most office for the lincoln countries. Astra zeneca has pledged it wont make a profit from the fact seen during the pandemic. If it gets regulatory approval, the firm says its ready to produce 3000000000 doses next year. If more, im joined now by katie europe, shes an associate professor of Oxford UniversitysJenner Institute that developed the vaccine is you work as an immunologist. And one of the investigators involved in the trials of this vaccine this year is going to have you on the show. Congratulations are in order yet. You must be excited and delighted. Yes, we are delighted with these results. Its been a very long, difficult, 9 months for us all on the team here in oxford say without c. T. Like you were these results today. I mean 9 months, not even a year to develop this. That thats quite an achievement. It has that you think has it set in with you and your colleagues and how quickly youve been able to get to this stage. Well weve been. d preparing for an event like this at the general institute for several years now. They identify this technology has been in Development Phase for decades. And weve always been working on how we could use a vaccine against an unknown pathogen. And we call it disease x. But weve been planning for this kind of eventuality for several years now. So working on the technology that would be needed to develop a vaccine this quickly and at this scale. And what differentiates this vaccine from the ones that weve heard from. For example, fives are and biotech so the fines are in much biotech vaccines are an r. N. A. Vaccines. Thats a much Newer Technology and no m. R. In a vaccine has ever been licensed. Whereas our vaccine is based on an ad new virus. And this technology is not new, its been around and developed lots of other diseases like malaria, influenza. And theyve been tested and children and older adults and lots of different settings. And so we have a lot more experience with these than we do with them. Are in a vaccine and you, when you talk about the efficacy of this vaccine, youre talking about from 70 percent to 90 percent. Why do we have this spectrum . So we tested different doses and different regimes and combinations in our vaccine trial because we didnt know what would be most effective and what would be most well tolerated. So as you mentioned, we saw 70 percent across the whole vaccine trial, but innocently that we are now lived where they were given a half takes. And then a full days, we actually saw 90 percent efficacy, which was surprising to one of us. And thats one of the great things about working in science is that sometimes you dont get the result that you x. That and you know, people around the world when they hear this news are going to be asking the question that theyve been asked about the one from medan of the one from pfizer biotech. How safe is this vaccine . Well, we have lots of experience with out new viruses. Theyve been tested and you know, they thousands of people before we made this fact. We did a vaccine trial with another current. If i was called so we have lots of good safety to shade 6 data to show that they are suitable for use in large populations in Young Children up to very well to adults say were confident this taxing will work well in the whole population. And because of this vaccine does not have to be kept at arctic like temperatures. And because its also relatively inexpensive to manufacture, is this the vaccine that could become maybe the globe or vaccine to help in the pandemic. So this is very much what we hope in this is what weve been working from from the beginning. The deal that was signed between the university of oxford and asters. And it was intended to supply facts in the to go play ball scale. And thats why we partnered with so many contracting organizations to manufacture different facts about 10 contracting partners, including the Serum Institute of india, who are the Worlds Largest manufacturer. The deal that we have with astra zeneca means that the university doesnt profit from the sale of this vaccine while the pandemic is happening. And we will never profit from this vaccine, from the sale of it to low and middle income countries. Because we really do want this to be a vaccine for the whole world and is here before we run out of time. Do we, can you tell us who will be the 1st people to actually get this vaccine . Who i dont know, i mean lots of different governments have ordered them, but i think thats probably a question for esthers. I think i dont know how they do not. He gets it passed, but it will be enough eventually. Well, and that is, that is whats most important, katie, you are. So she, professor of Oxford UniversitysJenner Institute, the developed this latest vaccine this year. We appreciate your time and congratulations again. Thank you very much. Turkey has prevented a search operation by the german navy of a cargo ship suspected of smuggling arms into libya. The german frigate hamburg intercepted the turkish vessel in the mediterranean on sunday night. The german worship is part of a European UnionNaval Mission to stop arms reaching libya, german soldiers boarded the cargo ship, but had to abort their search after the turkish government protested to the e. U. Commission. I for more now im joined by our Political Correspondent hans braun. Good evening to you, hans. So what more can you tell us about this incident . What happened is that this german frigate to inform the ship concerned that they want to search it that stopped the ship and then gave it a couple of allas for the facts to sink in. As it were, once this waiting period had paused, german marines entered the ship and stopped at this search. Until that point, everything went reasonably well and the crew of the ship caught paraded. But it was only once the germans had entered the ship that the flag stayed, which in this case was turkey. That took a protest set against this action. And as a result of International Law, when such a protest is required, it, the action was broken off. The surge erman marines withdrawal from the ship until that point i had not found anything untoward on the ship on the ship was allowed to continue to libya. Well, let me help customary for how you know, the usual is it for marines to board ships and conduct searches, and hes giving the orders for these marines to, to carry out the search. Well, its obvious, not something that is very usual, but at the same time it is not something that is completely unheard of. All of this is based on an International Mission by the European Union. The headquarters of this mission is based in rome in italy. And this headquarters in italy, in fact, gave the orders for the german frigate to stop and search that ship if that has happened. Similar things have happened about half a dozen times in the last 6 months or so. In some sense, it was a coincidence that this was a german frigate at that this was a turkish flag ship. Similar searches have been conducted in recent months by french frigates, by greek marines of ships on ships that are moving under various flags. So the fact that this was an incident in the end between germany and turkey in a sense was coincidence. But it is all based on International Law and an International Mission. And on an attempt to stop arms being transported into the civil war in libya, which is being prohibited by a resolution of the united nations. And what do you think that does is going to have any impact on bilateral relations between germany and turkey . Well, the relations with korean, germany and turkey have been on in a very bad fraught state for several years now that this incident is not going to make that any better. In fact, the turkish side reacted with acrimony today. And the german side said, well, this is just a further incident that is going to be reported and discussed at the next European Union summit because in fact, whats behind this is tension not only between turkey and germany, but we in turkey and to the International Community here in europe with the European Union, but also with nato. Our very own hands upon the latest tonight here in berlin as always on thank you. Finals in london after coming from behind to win a gripping match against u. S. Open champion dominique team. The russian followed up his victory earlier this month at the Paris Masters to take the biggest title of his career. Dominic teams been here before and beaten finalist at this tournament last year. The deal medvedev though, didnt even get that far. Failing to win a single match and going out in the group stage, what a difference a year makes for him. Team started this years final strongly taking the 1st set, albeit in a felt more fortunate fashion and made for that because half see the funny side. He got his revenge in the 2nd set reeling off 7 straight points to win the type break team now struggling to keep up, the russian is a tricky opponent. Adapting and mixing up his game to suit the occasion. A barrier at the nets and a formidable he held on to win the deciding set out of the title to sister city. Probably my best week to real my life. Not even talking about the title itself. I mean, to win the masters being on this unit. I mean, honestly, i would even, i know i can play good, but i would not believe it to. If you tell me this before the tournament, its the new generation of stars in mens tennis battle for supremacy. Its a b. Major that heading into next season as the pretend to this thread. Youre watching the of you knew zweibel from berlin, coming up next our special on the coronavirus pandemic. I will be back here at the top of the hour with more world news followed by the day to see you, bill. The fountain and the corona virus pandemic has the rate of infection in developing. What does the latest research say information and contacts the coronavirus update on t w how the virus spread through the tax issue is called spectrum. If you would like any information on the prong of virus or any other science topic, we should really check out our podcast. You can get your pod cast. You can also find us at science many leaders see testing as the way out of this dark and sporadic tunnel of coronavirus lock down. The thinking being that if you can catch someone before they spread the virus, then you can slow and even stop the pandemic. In austria, the government is planning a mass testing campaign. Here a bike, courier drops off, tests at apartments in vienna. Hell be back in the evening to collect the samples to be tested. But not every test is created equal. And the timing of tests is also crucial to getting to someone before theyre infectious can make or break the Contact Tracing campaign. A Mass Testing Program in northern italy has identified over 3000 coronavirus cases. How many of those people had no idea that they had covered 19 testing can clearly be a powerful tool for combating the spread of the virus. But what tests you do and where is key . We report from a hospital in a corona virus test to make sure this patients not infected ahead of her operation in a few days. Time doesnt hurt exactly, but its very unpleasant. It feels like the swab is poking around in your brain, but the test is obligatory to protect other patients and staff at hospitals like this one in berlin. But many people in germany would like the chance to be tested more regularly. It would be good if we could use the tests to make things like traveling easier to be a bit safer. But that doesnt look likely any time soon with Testing Capacity at its limits. The government is trying to ease the pressure on overworked labs, even some hospitals are shifting away from the more reliable p. C. R. Tests. Instead, using the faster cheaper antigen test to check best stuff for the virus that has the advantage of rapid tests is that we get a result within 30 minutes. Its relatively reliable and a relatively easy testing system. But on the other hand, the disadvantage is that we know the rapid tests are slightly less sensitive to the virus. The p. C. R. Test is the gold standard. Its more precise than the rapid test. Its a fine balance between whats reliable and whats practical. But the rapid test come with that challenges too. In germany, they can only be administered by a Trained Health worker that costs time and money and means people cant test themselves at home. No man understands the dilemma. As hospital staff, of course we would have liked to keep using the p. C. R. Tests because theyre more sensitive. But i understand the labs are at their limit and we need the p. C. As more urgently for their patients. When they arrive with symptoms, then we have to know fast, but for sure whether they really have coronavirus or not. Bahman gets tested once every 2 weeks enough to feel safe, he says, but its clear any hopes testing could be rolled out on a broader scale. Well have to wait for many, that means a test of patience instead. Now there are 3 types of tests being carried out on citizens around the world at the moment. The 1st tests for a past infection is called an Antibody Test or a serological test. A blood sample is needed for this test. Its then analyzed on the existence of antibodies. These are produced by our bodies when they face an infection and can be detected once its over. The other 2 tests look out for an ongoing infection with sars cough to the 1st of these is the antigen test. It needs a sample of saliva or throat tissue which can then be analyzed for the proteins that sit on the outside of the corona virus. These tests can give results quickly, but theyre not as precise as the p. C. R. Test. For the p. C. R. Test, you also need saliva or throat tissue. But this time its tested for the viruses genome which is known as r. N. A. The p. C. R. Test is the most reliable one, but in many cases it needs more time to be analyzed. Now ive been speaking to evangelise cops, suffer less from the association. The represents ever 200 accredited laboratories here in germany. I asked him why, when we have these more accurate p. C. R. Tests, we still need another type of test for covered 19 less secure a one year median to do just well, its a, its a tradeoff, i guess, between speed and accuracy. We have multiple settings in patient care where we cannot wait 567 or even 24 hours for a test result. So take someone who is really needed to a hospital or in an emergency setting, for example, of all in aged care or in an old peoples home. Someone is slow because it diverts a high fever or not, you need to be responsible very, very fast. And in such settings, it may be acceptable to work with a little bit less curiosity and less sensitive teeth. And thats how these tests have been designed as well. So tests also have a package insert like a drug, like a prescription drug. And its very clear that these tests have been designed to detect a virus in people who are symptomatic. And within a certain time window, and those organs you didnt answer where these tests are not extremely good at the moment. In the broadest screening, where people are generally asymptomatic, they look and feel healthy, where they could still be infected. And with these people into treatment and especially the road test, do not have a very hard sensitivity. And we recommend p. C. R. Testing should be done instead. But increasingly seeing Mass Testing Programs being carried out in various parts of the world, is that an effective way of actually defeating corona virus . Or is it just telling you where seeds . Well, its a different quality of the program, but its not the continuous, permanent screening and track and Trace Program we currently do. Its brought on the country. However, it has its purpose tool. It basically shines a spotlight into the part of the population at a certain point in time, and tells us how many infected people might be. The trouble with that is a little bit and engine tests again, used. And if the prevalence in the population of the disease is very low, like we have now seen in all the italy over this past week, and the positive rate there was below one percent. The risk of holds positive and false negative results is very, very high. And we also see the problem is negative and the result could give some false certainty because people can interact or get infected pretty quickly after the head test taken. With a negative result, they might feel safe and everythings fine and take over doing whats there. They like doing which is not quite the case, so we have to be careful with these results, but it gives us interesting statistics to see how many people might be infected within a certain population group. If you wanted to. What about the virus . But this, you would have to repeat it every day, and i would have to repeat the entire population. And of course, its a big enough feat getting those people tested once. Isnt it . About Antibody Tests. So testing when someone is had coronavirus in the past. Why is that useful . Particularly when we dont know how long or even if that does make you immune well, thats precisely the point is so, and thats also why its not being applied very much at the moment. So if you know someone has had the infection, a person has tested positive through the p. C. R. Test, perhaps even been admitted to hospital. It is interesting to try out. The antibody developments there are different types of antibodies which build over time some very quickly within hours where the immune system runs up to a fight in a drooler thats a sudden on to develop over time and then stay. And so its very interesting to measure in concern positive cases. How long do antibodies stay which type of antibodies build over the period of time . But for the current fighting of the pandemic, this is not a very good formation. We need to know who is infected, right . Now and who has to be isolated and put into the everybody test doesnt help us with evangelist cuts off a loss from elam. Thank you so much for joining us on the call in 1000 special points if you and now is the part of the road on where you get to ask the questions to ask science correspondent, aquariums if youre diagnosed with covered 19 and a recovering attire. What measures should you take to prevent your family from catching it as well . The last thing you want to do if you catch cove at 19 is give it to your friends or your family. Unfortunately, that can prove challenging if you live in the same household. On the positive side, the evidence we have so far indicates that after your symptoms appear with every day that passes, youre likely grows less infectious though its still grinding its way through studies at least. Currently, we think that maximum infectiousness hits around the 1st day that you show symptoms if not before. So if you tested positive after you developed symptoms and are now convalescing at home and the people around you have tested negative, then the likelihood youll infect them should as a rule drop by the day. Heres what authorities recommend you do 1st, no visitors of course, and both you and caregivers should wear masks and any interactions, even if its hard. Stay as isolated as you possibly can, preferably in your own room with a window that can remain open if temperature is permitted. Door closed, try to only eat there as well. A dedicated set of silverware and plates is a good idea. If you have the option in your home of multiple bathrooms and toilets, then dedicate one to your use limit contact with caregivers, if at all possible, they really shouldnt belong to a high risk group. Theyll need to disinfect regularly. Leave any dirty laundry or bed linens, unwashed for as long as possible. And finally, dont forget that caregivers will also need to quarantine for as long as Health Authorities require. Even if that means long after your own symptoms, proved and you can submit a question for derek. Through a you tube channel, we have to sort of time to bring you the latest developments in the race to get a Coronavirus Vaccine ready for distribution. Scientists at Oxford University working alongside pharmaceuticals, astra zeneca say trials show that their vaccine candidate is 70 percent effective. But that is thought to rise as high as 90 percent, one and a half doses a given that is lower than the percentages given by pfizer, by own tech. And however, the ox, a vaccine is cheaper to produce.
