Refugee agency and joins us from nairobi. Dana appreciate your joining d w. What reports have you been getting from . Thanks, michael, and you know, i just heard your piece and it is just to reiterate that right now we are very concerned about the escalating conflict thats happening in the region for us, u. N. H. C. R. The Un Refugee Agency in that area. There are about 100000 retrain refugees and they are very worried about them getting caught in the crossfire. And in fact, yesterday the fighting moved even closer to one of the camps that hosts about 6500. 00 refugees. And frankly, they started to pack up and were starting to see them walk more than 50 kilometers to the next nearest camp. We are seeing very much that there is a cut off of communication. There is a cut off of banking services. So there is a problem with a lack of cast, a lack of fuel in all of this could lead to increasing insecurity for a lot of moving parts here in a lot of variables, including sustenance for those refugees or you or your aid workers, able to bring food and water to people in the conflict zone. Right now its very difficult for anything to go in. Anything to go out. Were very much dont go shooting with all aspects, all parties, the local authorities, to try to have zones where we can actually get and get humanitarian access in. But frankly, with the way that the situation is deteriorating. It is, its not looking good. In fact, were in the process of relocating much of our staff from the areas according to your agency, more than 4000. 00 refugees have fled the fighting into sudan just in the last 24 hours. What do they face there . Yes. Well, this is an area in sudan that years and years ago they maybe had ethiopian refugees, but because theres been a relative peace, you know, they have one Transit Center that can hold me 100 refugees or sign seekers. And right now there are 6000 there. So we are actively in quickly trying to ramp up our response. Were working with the Sudanese Government to be able to do so. But, you know, there will be resources will need to be increased. And we, you know, its not just the 4000. 00 in the last 24 hours, as you said, since the beginning of the conflict, which was just a couple of weeks ago, were looking at almost 15000 refugees crossing over. So it with no into this in sight. So were very concerned not only about the conflict happening in ethiopia, but in sudans ability and the needs that are going to come up with what could be a very rapidly, a very rapidly escalating situation from the you and h. In 2015130, people were killed when socalled Islamic State militants launched multiple attacks in the french capital, suicide bombers and gunmen carried out a 4 hour killing spree, which also injured hundreds. Wed like to bring in filmmaker Shane Mcmillan who was a witness at the scene on that fateful night, a member use many nights since chain. Thanks for joining us here. You were in a building adjacent to the when the shooting began. Can you tell us what happened . I was actually visiting a friend for paris photo when we were working in the studio. It was sharing a wall with the butter. And so we were in there working, and the attack went on for quite a while. We didnt know what was going on and we did trust ourselves to go outside. It was just in the moment when people started escaping out the back door. And the building that we were staying in kind of became our refuge in a tree space. And i actually got a call from a p. R. Irish, the Radio Program that i was working for the time. And then it up reporting for most of the evening from inside kind of the sealed off area that was around. But im sure with a little bit of difficulty if were lucky, this is not the sort of thing most of us will ever experience. Of course, if i can ask what effect is this had on your life since i mean, it was a pretty traumatic experience. It was, it was pretty awful. What was happening. And i think i walked away with a much deeper compassion, empathy for people whod been through a traumatic experiences kind of really showed me how much trauma shapes peoples lives and how much it shapes the way our society works. And i mean to this day, i still kind of sit through the window or near the door with my back to the wall when i go out, even though its crazy, but its still, theres so time in my mind what youre saying is youre worried that this sort of thing could happen right around the corner. Still today. No, i dont think so. I think its just kind of an impulse that you have, you know, you know, think when you see Something Like that its, it just, youve, you kind of always have it in you, you know, and i dont worry about it. I think that, you know, i think that i whatever, what i really took away from it was probably more relevant for my work that, you know, trauma shapes. A lot of the ways that we frame things. Im just journalists, i think it shapes the way that we talk about these things in society with the way that we talk about them and builds fear. And i think, you know, a lot of the right wing politics of the last 5 years in europe can be kind of you can kind of see the roots of it in that moment. And the way that we as journalists framed that story and talked about, it was really important to that. And i think living that in real time as a person who was on the scene was very important to me. And im really curious, youre getting to the next thing i wanted to talk about, which is how this actually shapes your life as a journalist and as a filmmaker and youve touched on it a little bit, talk to me a little bit more about how its influenced your work in the way you go about your work. You know, i think that night i was really raw when youre in a moment like that. I was very sensitive to the prejudices of the people that i was talking with. And i could hear, you know, just in the tone of a question to frame that someone was setting around something, you know, that they were, you know, kind of building this kind of clash of cultures around this thing where, you know, im standing there just having the experience that im having, and i just want to be over as dont want to be happening. You know . And i think that really taught me that we as journalists have to step back from this minute by minute cycle and be more humble, more careful, less desperate. I think that we need to be more careful about not traumatizing the people who are in these situations and not you know, clobbering with requests. You know, my mom got phone calls to the night. She found out that i was there because of a producer on her house, you know, on a 3rd of the way around the planet. And i think that we, as journalists have to make sure that were not feeding the violence machine, you know, that surrounds Something Like this. You know, this can lead to a war. This leads to the heavier Police Presence in our streets. It leads to a lot of different things. We focus on these perpetrators, but we dont focus on the survivors. We dont focus on, you know, how do we generate society after Something Like this . How do we, how do we regenerate the lives of these people . We focus on the perpetrators, but we dont focus on the people who survived. And that for me being kind of on the line between those 2 people in a way, i mean, i wasnt in the building and i wasnt one of the people who did survive that horrible night. But i think being right up close to it in a different way, showed me a different type of journalism that i try to do in my own with my own work. Know so understood. Shane and incredibly well said, Shane Mcmillan, eyewitness of the terror attack at the concert hall. Thank you so much for joining us, and good luck with your further endeavors. Really appreciate your time. To the krona pandemic now. And here in germany, there have been a Record Number of new cases with nearly 24000 infections registered in the last 24 hours.
