I. Am very richards and welcome to the show democratic candidate joe biden has won at the u. S. President ial election after sealing a victory in the battleground state of pennsylvania of the 99 percent of votes counted in pennsylvania biden has won 49. 7 percent trump has won 49. 2 percent 20 electoral votes biden won in this state allow him to surpass that magic number 270 needed to win the election in the Electoral College according to projections by the Associated Press we also picked up 6 seats 6 votes lets say in nevada giving him a total of 290 electoral votes to republican president Donald Trumps 214. Well weve been hearing 1st responses from the biden supporters are gathered on the black lives matters plaza in washington d. C. Thousands of people there have been gathering and just blocks away from the white house in the last few days we were. Having a ball cap hit on the i believe there are right and i beg for the united way and i made it is 3 come on they are. Very very. Very thankful who with me in the studio now is 3 a filmmaker who worked on Barack Obamas campaign in 2008 and for Bernie Sanders in 2016 thanks for joining us so we know a President Joe Biden is expected to speak this evening what do you expect him to say look i think hes going to have a very job. Will be bringing people together showing people who want to be the president for everyone and. Try to tamp down expectations that there could be any unrest in the transition of power i think its just going to try to keep it simple keep it calm keep it biden all right so going to be a message of unity you expect but this election and the results i think really showed just how divided the country actually is and we shouldnt forget that 70000000 people voted for donald trump how well buy it and build a bridge to unify the country you know im so glad you said this because were all having this wonderful moment and it feels like a fever has been broken but if you actually look at what happened this election you know the number one vote getter of all time is now joe biden the number 2 is donald trump in the selection who increased his share of the minority vote increases there the republican vote and definitely says that trump ism is alive and well even if trump isnt in the white house so joe biden has to do more than just reach out to some of the people who didnt vote for him he needs to give a message reconstruction in america of rebuilding america in the pandemic that reaches across the aisle and here and gets to working people whether they be democrats or republicans or we should say its not such a wonderful day if you were a trump supporter who went out to vote for trump this would be for you a devastating results i mean you say you need. To reach across the aisle what specifically could a bite in presidency do to try and get voters that the Democratic Party lost to republicans back on board i think some of that is losing on bread and butter issues that President Trump did not deliver on president in 2016 ran a fairly populist campaign promising real issue you know bread and butter issues to americans he was seen as being the one pushing for the stimulus checks more than say nancy pelosi was although that is politics and perhaps not fair so i think being seen to be the leader of a party who is most concerned with making sure that an economy works better for everyone and some of these issues will actually hit the center right just as well as thoroughly as a look at the center left all right how do you think of the next couple of weeks are going to be shaping up or will there be you know a peaceful easy handover between the administration this is the question i think this is going to be a difference between real life and twitter i think on twitter especially with that you know a president so adept at it will have some back and forth and some consternation but otherwise i think you will see the media covering the biden transition as a very normal president ial transition and generally people treating this as the end of a normal if contentious election are all we will see in the days and weeks to come i want to bring in now detail the use Washington Bureau chief to join us she is standing outside of the white house in washington d. C. To get the latest for us there tell us what is happening where you are. Well since the moment the victory of joe biden was addressed to washington d. C. The capital of the United States turned into a big party place hundreds of people thousands of people i think its fair to say i was still coming towards the white house im just standing a couple of 100 meters away from and it is a very very happy joyful mood here by the we have to keep in mind washington is not the United States the United States much more d. Whited and i mean sure now people come out to want to celebrate and a half of the country if you have to keep in mind is no devastated and disappointed and that will be the big challenge for joe biden the next president of the United States to bring this country together again and he has what kind of reaction have we seen out on the streets have we seen protests and who is mostly coming out she protests if so. Its happy people they want to celebrate thats the majority view actually also talked to some republicans they said they disagree in many many regards with joe biden and camelot harris but they won 2 thirds donald trump out of the white house saying that he is nothing to do with then our party with the Republican Party people kind of awaiting a reaction no off the president of the United States from what we know is that he is still being out in virginia golfing his personal lawyer giuliani said this morning that he is not expecting donald trump to come gradual a the new president of the United States as the german chancellor Angela Merkel for example already did so this is kind of the mood here and one thought claire many people are also celebrating camelot hair is the white. President the 1st leg woman in this position and as we all know the age of joe biden may be a possible president in 2 or 3 years so here in front of the white house happy mood no protesters no weiland inside whatsoever a mention the Historic Campaign of kama harris become the 1st black woman and the 1st a south asian woman to be Vice President of the United StatesVice President elect for the people youve been speaking to there do you think that played a big role in their decision to vote for biden. I think so i mean it really depends. With whom you told my feeling is the younger the people are the more come along hair is all the more important camelot harris was obviously she was also very important for some African American women from many women as well but she also has like people who dont like her or who think shes kind of a flip flopper and who think doubt that she has the experience but i think overall people think that the mix of joe biden and her is perfect and that she has time know for the next 123 maybe 4 years to grow into becoming the possible next president of the United States. All right and you are standing there as weve said in washington d. C. In front of the White House Trump not actually there he is out golfing as all this news comes in and you really do see its a joyous mood behind you outside in washington d. C. But have we seen the other side of things here are some protesters taking to the streets elsewhere across the country upset about this call. You know its kind of i think its kind of still a shock for many people they were hoping that by the end of the day trump would make it my personal feeling is and ive traveled the country intensively over the course of the over the course of the last. Reads it now depends on donald trump himself if he keeps staring the pot if he kind of kind of allows his followers to go out and be wild if he kind of continues to do these calls for action as he did 2 days ago in this unprecedented speech in the white house then we might see some wire that is on the street as for no its we dont see anything but we really dont know what we know is that there are many Many Americans here ive highly my colleague ali were solid did a fantastic documentary for d w news about its militias here in the United States so its long from being over now a moment of joy specially here just a couple of 100 meters away from the white house but we will wait and we will have to wait and see how this day and the night really well. You know his poll in washington d. C. Thank you very much i want to bring it back into the studio with our guests joining us our own you know its a big issue that you has just touched on there is what we can expect to see in the days ahead in terms of protests in terms of Political Violence and whether you know to what degree this could potentially escalate some of the predictions have been quite dire what do you think is likely to happen in the weeks and months ahead i think at these big protests well see a lot of peaceful activity maybe some counter process and trump people i think where the worrying is is where there are these small places where recounts happening or even initial counts happening and you see folks showing up to monitor the situation who are maybe heavily armed automatic weapons who knows and then something pop. I think theres this is still a worry but the more joe bidens win is convincing in some of these crucial small counties the less likely that is but i can see trump very much standing back if this were to happen and you know saying its none of his business and its interesting is that you say that because i think they were hoping for that really clear obvious landslide victory and therefore mandate for joe biden hes just squeaking by on razor thin margins in some of these states even though the final tally in the Electoral College might look quite favorable spoken earlier about harris also becoming the 1st Historic Campaign to become the 1st black woman the 1st south asian woman to become Vice President elect and we know now that a short while ago as she gave a call to joe biden to congratulate him lets see if we can take a listen to that. Q oh. Yeah. Here it is the president of the United States. Shes standing there looks like a cell phone video and her running clothes just as static as you can imagine if you were her in that position so i cross now to our correspondent all over is allen whos been covering this story from us from bidens hometown of wilmington delaware all over whats the reaction there now. Well people are coming in celebrating its a really big moment for them they have been coming here right in front of the Conference Center that you can see right behind me where joe biden addresses the nation is coming came out to do so over the course of the last days and really urging for patients and now that moment came and people are coming here taking their cars honking their horns shouting out of the window so its a big its a big celebration here in his hometown of wilmington were also expecting to speak him to speak later tonight at 8 pm eastern theres a big fire planned for tonight but of course and youve spoken to it with the other colleagues of the w its only half of the country that celebrating right now all those other supporters of course members of far right militias that i was able to report about over the course of the last weeks and months and there is a certain risk involved that these would take to the streets extremism experts warn of spontaneous violence and it really all depends you just talked about it how donald trump would respond and especially if youre losing the backing of the Republican Party weve seen some members of the Republican Party coming out of the most important ones like Mitch Mcconnell have been dead silent on the victory so far so its interesting you mention that you also say the Biden Campaign has been asking for patience for the last few days as the votes are tallied as he has not to preemptively declare victory but now what patience is on the table again when can we expect to see joe biden. Yeah is expected to come out at 8 pm for a victory speech and you will again present himself as a unifier of the unifier he ran for someone who wants to heal the nation is what he said in a statement that he issued earlier today we will also hear about his policy proposals there is a lot of hope on improving the Transatlantic Partnership that has suffered under President Trump a lot of hope for multilateralism the return to the paris climate agreement and everything in terms of multilateralism but he certainly has other challenges to face the United States need a lot of reforms in all different fields the social division here is ongoing we had a racial Unrest Police reform the black as a result of the killings of black people by the by the police so a lot of challenges ahead for joe biden is certainly not guarantee that you will be able to tackle them as easily because we still dont know whether or not the democrats have won the control of the senate or not thats why you mention the senate which is a race that hasnt gotten so much attention in the International Media probably because the president ial election is so complicated for International Observers to follow to begin with but if the democrats do fail to take the senate they were hoping to flip it get it back from republican control after 6 years how possible is it really going to be for biden to push through that legislation that he hopes will unite the country. Well he really intends if he can take the senate or not if he can take the senate and hes got control of both chambers of the u. S. Congress it will be very easy to undo trump policies that he promised to undo if not then things will be more difficult we heard some majority leader Mitch Mcconnell already in the past saying that he will block. These attempts and then we are going to look at a stalemate however it will still be possible to govern for for joe biden he will be able to do so with the executable. Just in the past that had as happened very often also with donald trump used those executive orders frequently barack obama so that will be certainly a way to do it but it will not be as easy for him and certainly lots of challenges ahead in that scenario we will know that in january once all
