Im melissa chan welcome to news asia thank you for joining us is the end of a long week with not just americans but everyone following the count in the United States democracy can be a messy process and the particularly intricacies of u. S. Politics have played out spectacularly in asia the country with the most at stake is china given the 2 countries rocky yet close relationship so how is china viewed and responded to the events of this week we have. In the studio to tell us more hung on any official reaction from beijing yes beijing has said that the election is the u. S. Domestic affair and that it has no position on it and thats it thats it but is there any hint that beijing preferred one key. Handed it over another well i mean in the beginning chinese leaders probably one preferred mr biden because you know because of mr trump the u. S. Sino relationship has plunged to the lowest point in decades but after seeing what from is what kind of chaos magick mr trump has caused in the us i think beijing is starting to see mr trump as an accelerator of u. S. Decline ok so beijing hasnt said anything about either candidate im curious about whether china has said anything in regards to the democratic process this past week anything on that well the u. S. Media has reported on u. S. Elections a little bit not much but when they do report on that and one day do comment its mostly about how chaotic the u. S. Election has been and you know that mr trump has claimed Election Fraud and that hes taking it to court theres lots of mockery and shot in front of really once one commentary from thai campolo for example its a newspaper in hong kong controlled by beijing writes that u. S. Style democracy is a joke with clear double standards another one from state funded global times writes why is the west becoming more and more discontented with its democracy so whats happening in the u. S. Right now really is supporting chinas favored argument that the u. S. Is an utterly fundamentally unstable place and that democracy doesnt work ok so that state media im curious is there a way to get a sense of what ordinary chinese think in all of this i mean of course theres propaganda and they provide the guidelines in terms of what can be discussed in the country but any sense of what people think is. Actually try to look at combines a wave war and. Wave or social media but its also somewhat can be controlled its some. Contro dead but. On way boy its actually one of the hottest topics with a 2000000 searches and most chinese citizens i would say that they see that as an entertainment so many of them have been walking the u. S. Election and they also have been come until as if they were watching like a football match and each candidate has their own supporters one pose for example says that i wish trump can be elected for a 2nd term because whatever trump likes or dislikes kill say it in your face its easier to deal with another post writes people should have seen how arrogant indecent and disrespectful of fact and science trump has been and yet tough a country still supports him im utterly disappointed by the americans and that view by the way is shared by a lots of biden supporters in china and theres another one post that writes trump and biden are equally bad for china the best scenario for china is that biden wins but trump challenges his victory the 2 of them then enter into a conflict and bring the us into some sort of civil war in that this comment says it all really because more chaos in the west mean more opportunities for china and surely thank you. Now over the course of the election both trump and biden have tried to do each other on who would be tougher on china and in that context the issue of taiwan has come up china thats beijing considers taiwan which is independently governed and a democracy a breakaway province taiwan has stepped up military drills as beijing increases its pressure on the island by ramping up air force activity in the area chinese leader xi jinping has also suggested that he might take the territory by force telling taipei last month to quote prepare for war aging also accuses taiwan of quote colluding with the u. S. For more we have michael maas a visiting fellow at the American EnterpriseInstitute Mike why does taiwan matter but taiwan maybe a small island but it is way above its weight so its consistently a top trip and trading partner for the United States it occupies a key note in the Global Supply chain so if you like your i phone your laptop your smart watch you better hope nothing untoward happens to taiwan but but more fundamentally a world that is safer the United States and its allies around the world is a safe is a world that is safe for democracy like west berlin during the cold war taiwan says that democracy is front line. You know if. Its fending off threats to its very existence from an authoritarian became a minister taiwan would ever fall to chinese their predations and other world would suffer grievous loss and china would be in a position to dominate asia in a way that that there would only benefit the Chinese Communist party. And for close observers of taiwan u. S. And china relations the last 4 years under trump has been pretty eventful some people may remember that phone call president elect trump made to taiwanese president saying one breaking diplomatic president how disruptive for better or worse has this administration been when it comes to taiwan so i wouldnt say that the administration has been disruptive id say that the Trip Administration is the us i want a relationship one for recording so you know the 2 countrys National Security advisors have met in the white house now washington has engaged in and others in multilateral initiatives diplomatic side and its needed defense articles that i want washington history to watch like it would treat any of its other Security Partners so i think that the is another step so both ensure that both countries gain more from the relationship well also contributing to deterring china from acting more aggressively towards the war speaking of acting more aggressively whats your assessment of taiwan becoming a flashpoint a sparking a military conflict that may or may not involve the u. S. Yeah its all in the wash so i think that the Taiwan Strait is the most dangerous flashpoint in asia perhaps globally and i think its the place thats most likely to lead to a war between the United States and china but that doesnt mean that i think such a war is likely i think one can be avoided but i do believe that the chinese threat to taiwan is growing more urgent and theres good reason to think that the socalled reunification will become even more important to Say Something in the years to come taiwans people unsurprisingly have little interest in union with what they consider to be many of the considered to be a foreign country ruled by dictators now it is sort of a situation in which an immovable force is meeting in unstoppable syrian unmovable object is meeting an Unstoppable Force and i think that that means uncoerced unification is off the table and that makes for a dangerous threat dynamic in the Taiwan Strait that all of that underscores the importance of ensuring that taiwan can effectively defend itself and that the United States and ideally its other allies can successfully come to taiwans aid if need be you know i think its crucial that that beijing look at a move on taiwan as a highly risky move and its crucial that taiwan the United States take steps to ensure that that assessment doesnt change in beijing Michael Mazza thank you india celebrates devolving next week its one of the most important festivals in the country and firecrackers are central to the celebrations but they add to the already high pollution especially in delhi the government banned environmentally unfriendly firecrackers 2 years ago but as the as many are charging reports both businesses and environmentalists unhappy with the move. Markets are abuzz with activity as the valley approaches. People trying to shops to buy firecrackers and other goods linked to the festival of light. But every year this festival adds to the concern around the worsening air pollution caused by the lighting of firecrackers. For the past few years there has even been a partial or a complete ban on the sale of fire crackers in delhi to keep the pollution levels in check this year the State Government had directed that only green or eco friendly fire crackers will be sold in the capital city. I dont know there has been running a Fireworks Store in delhi for the past 32 years selling a variety of firecrackers. But 4 years ago his business suffered a huge loss after a bank under seal of firecrackers ahead of the run. This year his shop stocked with only green firecrackers read off less harmful Raw Materials and therefore cause less and missions. Indias Supreme Court 1st rule in 2018 that only and why mentally see firecrackers should be sold in delhi but otherwise says that at the time most traders had little access to green firecrackers. This year despite a better supply their id is Still Limited and sales are low. Our sales have fallen to 25 percent of what they used to be we cant make up for our losses over the cons of firecrackers that children want from devolving are just not available in. Matthew harbor new. Customers are divided over whether this move will bring any real change in the capital while some seem to welcome the move environmentalists like somebody should love or feel that this is all sound and fury a long term some. Ssion is song moving from norman 5 guys to green goggles as lord and off right now because they wore the wrong guy because of that and they think both unless. By then still at the point the more firecrackers is higher than the normal firecrackers this would not have an impact on the air quality. Either like knowledge is that the move from regular to green track is a positive one but she feels that the industrial is treated unfairly. Who think all the pollution has a year round problem the air quality is bad even when there are no firecrackers lit but everyone just wants to target a firecracker industry but ive been on the other one says that he and many like him may have to back up and close their businesses. At least he can still make news. Wow you may have heard of berlins fancy new airport the one that took 9 extra years and billions of extra euros to open well plenty of berliners dont even want it why because they love the citys other airport to go and its main terminal where passengers only take a few steps from curbside to check in to boarding take a isnt just efficient its also an icon of the cold war era but this weekend its finally set to close for good airport architects want to say goodbye. Might hard for an air con influx in mark have come to say goodbye to their airport berlin table right before it closes down for good they wanted to take a walk down memory lane. Here a lot of the puzzle piece floorboards were here they were useful but an acoustic disaster because of the luggage carts are sick wheels came later the carts were allowed so we scrapped the original floorboards and replaced them with the cheapest materials is because. They designed every single detail in this terminal from the buildings shape to the interior styling and even the indoor and outdoor signs take all airport wasnt just a run of the mill project for these famous german architects it was their 1st Big Commission after getting their College Degrees in 1966 their design won the competition for the new airport in the divided city of berlin. At that point in time teagle was just an airfield it was originally a takeoff and landing runway used for air lift planes bringing goods to the landlocked city of west berlin after the 2nd world war then it was repurposed in 1974 the new airport opened a verifier just over 2000 people. It was a pair of glasses like they hes a little late so the Opening Ceremony took place. That the west berlin man trial should. Cross search he got these glasses as a key table became the prototype of the short distance airport optimizing the space between arrival and departure gates it was popular with berliners and tourists the airport was the point of arrival for prominent guests it was the stage where emotional moments took place like the return of the german soccer world champions in 2014 but the airport became out of touch with modern needs it was Old Fashioned and too small for a booming capital city after german reunification it was necessary to build a new airport and close down taking. If this is up now its time to say goodbye not without a touch of melancholy because this building documents a time when our job was all about peoples needs time when customer was king. To dream of. My colleague melissa hall right here for more melissa this strikes me as a kind of weird moment for this city and this is this moment for decades in the making when one airport closes another one opens hardly anyones flying theres very little fanfare yet the be the new airport really opened with the wind the bare airport boss said this was nothing to celebrate after this years long delay engineer said that they were ashamed so it just seems like Somebody Just opened the door one way one day one day a week ago and just let people know the main architect of the new airport is actually the same one we just saw of the old airport mine of mine had some dark on one of his big things that he hates airport shopping yeah yeah thats was that was one of the great things about the intake is that it wasnt about shopping it wasnt about entering into this huge mold filled with juicy free goods it wasnt about restaurants it wasnt about any of that stuff it was about flying flying flying and one of the extraordinary things that you mentioned early on was the short distance between getting dropped off in a taxi and actually getting into the plane it really was just a few may to get off that you just where the planes it was just just behind the woman behind you know just behind the counter with who was sitting was where the plane was that actually my understanding of it is that he didnt want shopping in the near airport he made a plan with very little shopping and they tried to cram it in at the last minute and that led to all these other problems. That led to some of the delays that we saw a lot of people do have a lot of affection for take airport because back to the cold war yeah because because west linn was an island inside east germany and to avoid these transit roads the only way to avoid these transit roads was to fly in and out of port so a lot of these west berliners really hold that close to their hearts i mean those also i mean it was also very believing wasnt it was very gritty and it was really right yeah it wasnt beautiful to look at from the ground i dont think but i think once you go into the plane to apply and you were flying in or you were flying out it really was impressive you got to see all these lovely the use of these hexagon forms. It was your if it was sort of it was an acquired taste but one that i think we all came through prescience after we landed there a few different times anything planned for the farewell not that much planned for the fail well the building 5 Department Going to say goodbye with the ceremonial water oche moment theyre off people sort of still watching appliance watching planes going in and ask and theres not really that much plans of space is going to be used as an open quarter for of the 5000 people 5000 departments and space for holding 10000 right so certainly got big plans and so we can you know we can certainly use those apartments but its a very quiet goodbye to a place with a lot of history melissa thanks for coming on the show.
